The year is drawing to a close. For experts serious about growing their businesses, ideas about how to (a) end it on a high and (b) hit the ground running in the New Year, will be appealing. I describe an unconventional but potentially useful low cost business promotion strategy you can consider.

In a previous article I mentioned that these friends had arrived for a 2 week tour, and that I’d purchased a popular ancient West African board game called “Ayo” in Yoruba (my language) as a gift for them.

It was handed to them by my 16 year old son, who they met for the first time on their last day. Click here to view photos my daughters playing the game.

When I visited the UK for a course back in 2000, this was one of the items I bought that I found very useful in my work after I returned to Nigeria.

But I’ve never found a place to buy it out here, since then.

You can therefore imagine how pleased I was to get this 2016 edition, as 2015 closes out.

Now, while flipping through it, the thought that I could not get it before now triggered the idea in my mind that I could MAKE MY OWN calendars…

As that idea took shape in my mind, it occurred to me that I could use my own original photos taken during my travels, creatively mixed with graphics of products I offer for sale, to brand the calendars I produce.

The best part was that I knew WHERE I could get it ALL done to VERY high standard, at VERY low cost – most likely lower than anywhere else (If you wonder how that is possible, just keep reading).

Once I established the above in my mind, I knew I had to tell others – my clients, subscribers and other members of my target audience who I actively aim to ADD value to…

That’s why you’re reading this. Here are two examples of how this idea can be put to use:

1. Use a special selection of photos from events and outings you’ve had in the past, to produce a branded calendar that you can sell, and/or give out as gifts into the New Year.

2. If you sell products, use photos of your key products creatively merged into photos of popular tourist attractions or destinations, from your town, city or country/continent, to produce a Calendar or Meeting Planner that you can sell, and/or give out as gifts into the New Year.

In my case I plan to create calendars and meeting planners using photos of my custom Excel-VB softwares‘ reporting interfaces, merged in an aesthetically pleasing manner with photos of key attractions in Nigeria and Benin. Short descriptions/annotations will be appended where relevant.

Now, if you’re like most people, you’re probably wondering about potential cost implications of doing all I’ve said above.

Well, if you’ve been following my writing for a while, it’s likely you know I get my print/physical books published at zero cost, using Print-On-Demand publishing provided by Lulu.com.

The well finished print quality of the books produced using this system is comparable to what obtains anywhere in the world. Y et, as the author, I (as well as my clients who use this system) do NOT spend money other than that for accessing the web, to get each book published.

Similar services to Lulu.com’s POD publishing exist for other non-book-related printing needs that creative people have.

For instance, I have a store on Cafepress.com which displays for sale, t-shirts, key holders, and over 50 other products, branded with Eyo Masquerade graphics, that I created by using Photoshop to manipulate photos I took of an artist friend(Eze)’s pointillism artworks back in 2005.

To begin, I designed and uploaded my graphics to a FREE store (see www.cafepress.com/ezeartsonline) I created on their website

The graphics then appeared on individual products I chose, with the resulting branded versions becoming instantly available for purchase online.

In other words, just like it happens with ordering bulk copies of books from Lulu.com, anyone IS can orders ANY of the branded products, and have it shipped to his/her doorstep in a box!

As a Cafepress.com store owner, this means you can create for instance, calendars branded with images you design or photos you take, and then order whatever number of copies you want.

Note that the options available in terms of calendar types may limit what you end up with. For example, the Cafepress.com platform probably will not have anything that can allow you create something like the Derbyshire calendar.

Having said the above however, recent checks I’ve done online has indicate that some new POD providers now exist online. And they offer a much wider and flexible range of products you can customize with your graphics along the lines I propose here.

As I make progress with my own plans to find something that suits my needs, I will document what I discover to share with interested persons ( Click here to let me know if you’d like to get updates on this them in future).

Create, order & sell (or “GIFT”) your branded calendars and meeting planners to mainly CEOs and organizational leaders.

Even though I plan to sell them, whenever and wherever I perceive it will be useful to do so, I will give out complimentary copies of my branded products to persons fitting my target audience profile.

Imagine being able to sit at home and order GIFT versions of your unique low cost, branded products to prospects, clients, as well as friends and relatives?

The strategy will be to make your branded products NOT similar to anything available in the local market.

The pocket-friendly pricing will be added as the icing on the cake to attract attention and generate interest.

Low prices make sense for branded products of this kind because people who buy them will learn about my other products/services in using them.

I like using items like calendars/meeting planners, greeting cards, keyholders and similar items because they:

a. tend to be more pocket-friendly cost-wise

b. come in small units so large quantities can be purchased at discounted rates

c. can be “gifted” to DECISION MAKERS – who happen to be a key target audience.

As an expert-who-speaks, your uniquely branded products can make a great impression and boost your name/brand recognition in the process.

That’s why what I propose here should interest you.

Not only is this a little known way to achieve useful marketing impact, it is also little used – especially when done using POD publishing.

If you adopt this strategy going into the New Year, there’s a good chance doing so will get you noticed ahead of your peers, rivals or competitors.

REMEMBER: When you do it using a POD provider, you get to spend VERY little to get A LOT done, that would not be possible any other way!

Creative Thinking, Hard Work, and Blind Faith Will Defeat Adversity – ANY DAY! [Hint: Get Spontaneous Coaching to become a Master of Adversity (MA)™ ]

When you lack money, common sense dictates you get enough before traveling to another country doesn’t it. Of course it does.

Well, as described in a true 1999 story linked below, I did the opposite, with empty pockets, successfully.

How? Through Blind Faith (and I’m NOT talking religion): Blind Faith guides you to intelligently dispense with common-sense, doubt or fear, to pursue your goal (be it personal or business related), while BELIEVING that YOUR Creator will meet you at the EXACT point of YOUR need.

Note here that “intelligently dispensing with common-sense” in applying faith implies you will STOP “worrying/doubting/fretting” and LISTEN for insights – the tiny voice inside you – from the Creator on how to move forward in-spite of your handicap.

That often comes in form of subtle hints, suggestions, flashes of ideas: that’s Him ANSWERING your requests!

The problem is we often let worries, doubts and fears BLOCK us from “detecting” those insights, talk less of acting on them.

[NB: Here’s a warning: Unless you detect, and more importantly ACT on those insights He sends to you, you may find yourself unable to make useful progress, despite your best efforts: Not even when you get money!]

This is NOT textbook theory: I have experienced it countless times…

But it took doing it right, to begin to make sustainable progress in different endeavours.

Over time, my ability to succeed this way has caused some who know me to comment that I “create my own luck”.

I often try to explain – but most people fail to “get it”.

That’s why I write articles like this, every now and then, in the hope that some will come across it and LEARN!

Regular readers of my writing likely know it already. But in case you’re not one, I’ll tell you:

I am NOT religious – and have not been since 1989 (when I was 19 years old).

So this piece is NOT about religion.

I share here details of how – in 1999 – I gained life-changing insights into the what the Creator expects from us, if we are to get answers to what we want from Him!!!

My understanding continues to evolve till today, but the foundation was laid back then.

It happened when (having NO MONEY to pay my way after a 3 week stay), I embarked on a dangerous 12 hour overnight boat journey – under heavy rainfall – across the Atlantic ocean, in a desperate bid to return to Guinness Benin Brewery, in Nigeria’s Benin city, from Cameroon’s Douala.

What I did that day by choosing to travel across the ocean under such risky conditions, even as I heard a radio report that some people had died when a boat capsized just few days before (!), would be called “foolhardy” or “crazy” by most people.

Yet doing so enabled me achieve my goal of resuming work from annual leave, on the very day and minutes to the time (2p.m) I was expected to resume as duty shift brewer!

After I arrived, my inner eyes opened, and I knew my life would never be the same again/

I have taken countless other risks of varying degrees, since then in different areas of endeavour, to succeed – in spite of daunting adversity – by doing what MOST sane, logical minded, “commonsensical” people would NOT do!

To put it another way: when faced with problems or difficulties, I often overcome them by taking calculated risks to do what MOST “right-thinking” persons would NEVER do.

The confidence – and conviction! – with which I keep doing the above, derives mainly from my experiences during THAT fateful journey across the ocean, when a guardian angel literally came out-of-nowhere to help me.

My understanding enables me achieve relentless advancement towards my goals, no matter the challenges, problems, setbacks or failures (aka temporary defeats) I encounter!

In other words, that “understanding” equips me to defy negativity in every shape and form it exists.

By implication, I defy evil and anything that goes against the will of the Creator for my life (because He never wishes us evil)!

I do this using a Positive Mental Attitude (PMA) that puts no hope in ANY man, but invests 100% faith in the Creator, while engaging in honest and hard work, based on creative application of intelligence.

Adopting such an internal state of mind attracts timely advancement opportunities, and insights for resolving inevitable challenges/adversity to you.

There are universal laws in nature, setup by the Creator, which make this possible.

If you abide by them, you simply CANNOT fail.

 

That does not mean you will not periodically struggle.

You will. As does every other human being.

But unless you do it wrong, your struggles will often be preparations for greater success held in store for you – IF you persist, and do not quit.

If you keep your PMA and continue having blind and unquestioning faith that the Creator will see you through, in-spite of any shortcomings you have, and because you NEVER do evil to others (which pleases HIM more than anything else)…YOUR success is inevitable!

I benefit from living this way: It is why I successfully defy negativity, evil, and anything that goes against the will of the Creator for my life – including attempts by ANYONE, big or small, powerful or not, to pull down, cheat or exploit me.

It is impossible for ANY true child of God to BE otherwise!

This is why I continue to record progress towards greater successes in EVERYTHING I do.

 

It is also why I AM a spontaneous, fearless and bold DOER of what is good and right, AND challenger of wrong doing wherever I find myself – even at the borders I cross so often.

Some who have experienced me in this mould, have had cause to ask: “Are you a lawyer or journalist? Do you work with SSS?” etc.

When I answer in the negative, they look at me in unending puzzlement.

Concerned persons have warned me of the risk and dangers associated with doing the above – that I could get attacked, or even killed.

But I always tell them I’m alive TODAY only because of the Creator – and NOT by the grace of ANY human being. I therefore will NOT let fear of human beings, stop me from doing His will

We forget that so often.

Our lack of faith makes us miss the point that if He does NOT permit it, even a loaded gun will fail to discharge its bullet load when pointed at YOU.

Isn’t that why we talk about “miracles”?

My life is full of miracles.

For instance, my demonstrated success in generating continuous passive income creating & selling my OWN 100% original and unique range of MS Excel-VB software online, as an African in Africa, is unprecedented.

Using it, I’ve defied conventional thinking in my society (where trust is VERY hard to win online), to achieve my financial goals, without needing to move around physically to win buyers’ trust.

And I do it so well that I’m attracting an increasingly global paying audience, who send payment to me via various channels, without meeting me!

Today, I have wonderful friendships with many of my past buyers – and we still have not met.

It’s the philosophy I’ve shared here that makes it possible for me to do all this.

But if you think getting where I am now, was easy, think again: I have invested MANY thousands of hours – unrelentingly – under the most discouraging physical, emotional and psychological conditions that most people would give up in, to KEEP GOING, until I broke through.

And I continue doing so even today.
That is to say, this kind of success did/does not come quickly, or easily.

Just the aspect o marketing my work by writing an article daily takes MAJOR effort, unless what you turn out is RUBBISH. To craft a compelling piece that commands the conscious attention and interest of others, on a regular basis requires having more than a passing interest.

This alone I have found most people unwilling to do – talk less of sticking with trying to create and sell custom MS Excel-VB driven software (like my Ration Formulator, Poultry Farm Manager, Payslip Generator etc) for N5k to N200k like I have now done many times – but which took me YEARS to get right!!!

So what was it that kept me going all those years when I saw little or no positive results to encourage me?

It was FAITH in the Creator – the unflinchingly absolute and unquestioning kind.

It goes without saying that I believed in myself and my ideas.

But most of all, I had FAITH that the Creator would SHOW me how to use my abilities, to succeed with my ideas…

The results I get today show that he has since done so, and continues to do so.

Anyone willing to LIVE this way will record similar if not better results – be it in your personal or business life.

It’s that simple.

Authentically Successful African Billionnaire Shares True Life Stories In a Series About Fighting Corruption to Succeed in Business [Econet Wireless Founder, Strive Masiyawa Sets an Example Worth Emulating by Business Leaders Worldwide]

Strive Masiyawa, billionnaire founder of Econet Wireless recently began writing a beautifully eye opening and educative series on the subtle shapes and forms in which corruption happens in business here in Africa – and I’m ecstatic he’s doing what he promised!

Thank heavens he’s a globally reconized billionnaire who rubs shoulders with authentically successful others (like Richard Branson) AND he’s also well known for being very pious and strictly honest in all his dealings.

If not for the above, coupled with well known true stories about how he successfully defeated corrupt state sponsored attempts to stifle his business right from his startup years, Masiyawa would by now have probably been accused by those with vested interests, of being “jealous” or “bitter” or “frustrated” etc.

That’s what those who benefit directly or indirectly from corruption readily say about those who speak out against it.

I’ve written about this great man in the past, noting that he is one truly authentically successful entrepreneur billionnaire African that I reckon with.

Most of the others are phonies: What he is saying about corruption is how they make their own money!

Hopefully the young Africans who eagerly click LIKE on Masiyawa’s anti-corruption anecdotal series on Facebook, will remember to walk their talk when faced with the social pressures back in their respective societies and communities.

I say this as one who has had to pay the price for doing so in my personal and business life for over a decade, and gotten mocked or criticized for doing so by most of my peers and younger others.

It is NOT easy to do.

Incidentally, some of the youth want to understand better how corruption happens and why they must resist it.

For instance one young Nigerian, few weeks back, when Masiyawa announced his intention to start this series, had commented that he looked forward to reading about why Masiyawa’s Econet Wireless business failed in Nigeria.

It’s the same question another billionnaire – Richard Branson – has had to respond to, in discussing the demise of the Virgin Nigeria venture he once operated in a partnership with that country’s government.

I certainly hope Masiyawa shares the details of what happened during that period he ran Econet Wireless in Nigeria!

Now, I hinted at it above, and Masiya himself has noted also, that following this true and honest (zero-tolerance-for-corruption) path will not be easy. He pointed out that you may lose friends, lose business/money and it could even cost you your life. Yet he recommends that you stay firm and do it anyway!

I agree with him, and the growing success, and significance I enjoy today for what I do, though long in coming, is proof that anyone who stands boldly against corruption with firm faith in the Creator, combined with a willingness to work hard and be creative, will NEVER fail.

For me, Masiyawa now stands head and shoulders above many other business owners in the world for being willing to stick his neck out in this manner, to EXPOSE inside details of corrupt dealings he has encountered and rejected on the way to becoming a billionnaire.

Through him, more Africans will learn that it is possible to get truly rich without engaging in any corner cutting – unlike what so many misguided friends, clients, and even very close relatives, some elderly too, kept trying to force me to accept.

I never did, and some resent me for it, to the extent that they still look for ways to pull me down, till this day.

Yet I’m doing better than ever, because I used my creativity, with lots of hard work, coupled with blind and unquestioning faith in the Creator to develop a unique system that enables me earn over 80% of my income online.

I recall that at a point back in 2004 or so, I took my fight against corruption online by launching what I called a Beat The Nigerian Factor (BTNF) mini site, where I published examples of corruption I encountered.

That’s why I love what Masiyawa is doing so much!

Anyone who is willing can find a way around corruption. The way I see it, Strive Masiyawa’s accomplishments offer the needed inspiration to do it, and his zero cost “lectures” provide the required guidelines you can follow to succeed

.

That means you now have no excuse to NOT do it.

The ball is in your court.

The foregoing quote offers potentially useful insights into how to make your sales and marketing communication successful in winning buyers. I explain below.

A. you need ideas to get started selling your products/services.

B. you’re already making sales but would like to sell more, with less effort and at less cost.

What I share here I learned the hard way – as a struggling entrepreneur who could not support his family, talk less find funds to pay for marketing or advertising!

In other words, all I had was the opportunity to access the web at N100 to N250 per hour (depending on the café I used), and to try promoting the solutions I offered via self-taught web design and web marketing skills.

Things did not work out for A LONG time, for me.

I recall in 2005 or so, I got to a point where after exhausting my own funds, I would sneak into my wife’s purse and take N100 from the little she’d kept saved there, so I could work one extra hour in the café to try a new idea I had.

Most times after doing that bad deed, I came home with nothing to show for it, and to get some MAJOR LIP from my wife, for taking her money!!

That’s all way back in the past now. But I share these details, because today when I create promotional stuff that I use online people who watch me do it, comment that I do it effortlessly.

I tell them that’s because I learnt to use Photoshop to create graphics and Macromedia Dreamweaver (today I use Joomla! and WordPress) to build websites, NOT because I wanted to, but because I did not have the money to pay a web designer I’d approached to do it for me.

What was more, despite my best efforts, nobody I knew and talked to was willing to give (or lend) me the money to pay the guy.

But being the self-driven independent minded thinker I’d always been, I ignored suggestions that my business idea was bad, and resolved to learn to do it myself.

Some experts believe that it’s best to focus on what you are best at, and to sub-contract the rest to others. I argue that THAT depends on what part of the world you are in, and how reliable the people you have to do that with are.

In my part of the world, the idea of using Virtual Assistants and the like for building my kind of knowledge based business is often an invitation to trouble. Quite often, it’s either you get lots of disappointments or worse, your material could get “stolen”.

I exaggerate NOT. It almost happened to me: TWICE!

So that’s why/how I learnt to create my own promotional materials for use online.

But acquiring the skills only addressed one dimension of the problem. By the time I began using those skills, I soon realized I needed to find a way to get my target audience the pay attention, and at some point RESPOND to my offers (e.g my Excel-VB Ration Formulator, and the popular Feed Formulation Handbook).

Which brings me to the major mistake I see lots of people making when trying to sell.

They are always too focused on themselves, and what they want you to buy. The rarely invest time, effort or energy to INVESTIGATE and accurately identify what you need – or how best to communicate with you (i.e their target audience).

For instance, every now and then I get emails, phone SMS messages, facebook messages etc, in which some product or service offer is made to me.

What always strikes me as odd, is the fact that those who send such marketing messages do so as if they assume they are the only ones, who do what they do and that their offers are irresistible.

Yet when one checks, they offer no compelling reason to choose them over the other providers who sell (what often appear to be) the exact same thing.

Little or no attempt is made to build a relationship or establish some trust. They just write and ask you for business without preamble.

To borrow an expression from Fela Anikulapo Kuti: JUST LIKE THAT!

And that’s the mistake many make.

Even when YOUR offer is free, that approach will rarely work with a discerning prospect.

Smart business persons who are clued up about what it takes to win buyers over, know that the most important thing your sales and marketing communication MUST do is answer the question: What’s In It For Me (WIIFM)?

When conceiving your sales and marketing message, you MUST focus on giving a compelling answer to the WIIFM question in the mind of your target audience.

People often make the mistake of thinking they need to talk about themselves, and how good they, their products, and their certifications are, to convince buyers.

In reality however, if you want to attract high profile buyers who will spend good money to buy from you, the KEY is to tell them how you can help them solve a problem they have!

To do that you must develop a system to discover what problems they seek help with. Then using that information you get as a guide, you will tell them what your product/service can do for them along the lines of interests you know they have.

Quite often this process will not happen instantly or overnight. Instead it will take time and effort, possibly over a period of hours, days weeks or even months.

But the good thing is that once you succeed in gaining the right insights into what the prospect needs, you will be able to repeatedly use what you learn to sell and resell to them!

In fact, as long as you continue to create solutions that work, to meet the needs you identify your prospects have, selling to them will often be near-effortless.

This is what many people trying to sell tend to miss – because they are often in a hurry to sell.

However, unless you have a captive audience and a product/service that no other person offers, you simply cannot succeed by “hurrying” prospects to buy.

If you want cost-effective and sustainable success in selling, you cannot work that way!

What you can do…

I once came across a quote that read:

“People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care” – Anonymous.

The above words underscore the point I’m trying to make here. But it’s not just the quote that convinces me of what I say here.

It’s the repeat success I continue to record in selling a growing range of mostly digital products and services, to an increasingly global audience that tells me it works!

Let me illustrate based on what I do…

When someone who came to you 2 weeks ago, and asked for details and prices for 2 products s/he discovered on your site via a Google search, goes silent after you’ve responded with details (and a phone call), one would be tempted to assume s/he has moved on.

Yet, time and time again such enquirers have returned weeks, months (even years!) later, to buy those same things they asked about, from me, as if they never left.

I have written several true stories about this in the past – including one that mentions Oladipo Mann who came back about 3 years later!

The key to my success in winning buyers over this way has been my ability to communicate along the lines of what interests them, even when they seemed to have “gone”.

How do I communicate with them when they go away- you wonder?

It’s simply by using a Web Marketing System (WMS), which has at its heart a routine of regular publishing of useful content, that continually invites those who interact with it, to part with their contact details – email addresses and phone numbers especially – via a web form (like this one).

When they do that, they get added to my mailing list database, to which I routinely send broadcasts about my new content as it is published online.

Due to the fact that most of my content is often designed to inform, educate and empower my target audience (i.e. answering the WIIFM question, the subtle effect over time is they begin to LOOK FORWARD to it.

And since I creatively insert references to solutions I offer, in the body of the content I send out, THAT keeps the interest they have alive – in their subconscious.

Over time, they begin to TRUST me, because I am telling them things that interest them, and which they find potentially useful.

Since my focus is never on selling, but on educating them, to do what they do better, including seeing why they’re better off buying from me, I feel no need to chase them…

As Jason Leister so often warns in his newsletter, “chasing” prospects or clients to buy often causes them do the exact opposite (i.e run away!).

Many people who want to sell fail to get this!

The approach of communicating to answer the WIIFM question eliminates the need to chase – and it is the key – the secret! – to sales and marketing success.

You simply keep doing your thing as described above, till your target audience arrives at a psychological point of conviction where s/he decides to ask YOU for payment details.

As long as you make sure the content you send to them is relevant and of high quality, it’s only a matter of time before this happens.

From what I’ve shared above, it’s obvious that this quote explains why answering the WIIFM question in your marketing communication, works. You may therefore want to keep it in mind, when carrying out your sales and marketing tasks in future!

If You’ve Done Everything But See No Results, Do THIS!

There’s a spiritual dimension to authentic success achievement.

Note however that this has nothing to do with a person’s religious bias, and everything to do with his/her ability to successfully connect with the Creator and tap from the unseen depths of His wisdom to gain needed insights to better decipher what to do at various stages in the pursuit of worthwhile goals.

Sometimes you will have done all that can be done on the physical plane…

Not everyone readily realizes this truth. And those it occurs to often find it hard to accept.

Yet it cannot be denied. Many authentically successful achievers have confirmed the role that an intangible yet powerful force played in their lives.

Some have called it luck or coincidence while others called it God, the Infinite Intelligence etc.

We all tend to have names for factors that help turn our fortunes around for the better, at that crucial moment when we’ve done all we know how to do, using everything we have, with little or nothing to show for it.

To borrow an expression from the great Emerson, at that point we would be at our “wits end”.

For the uninitiated, who are not familiar with the process of connecting with the creator, they typically end up going into a state of panic.

But that never helps and only creates more confusion.

It’s circumstances like the above that make some people get described as running around like a “headless chicken”.

But those who learn to connect with the Creator experience the opposite.

They are able to attain a level of spiritual understanding that gives them confidence in the face of uncertainty, no matter how prolonged.

So, rather than be seen running around in a confused state of panic (like the proverbial “headless chicken”), they instead exude an outward calmness in the pursuit of their goals, regardless of the delays, disappointments or setbacks they encounter.

Persons able to remain firmly in control of themselves in trying times like the above mentioned (by applying undying faith while waiting for breakthrough), are the ones most likely to achieve sustainable long term authentic success at whatever they do.

Use Learning Events to Make More Money from Your Book

One of the advantages of Self-Publishing your physical book using Print-On-Demand technology, is that you spend very little to get it in print, and then get to buy it as the author, at the cost price.

This gives you good margin to play with in selling the books.

For example I recently sent a client I helped ghost-write and publish his book the following message, based on the above:

You can buy your books at your author cost price of $3 US dollars, instead of the $10 US dollars selling price!

That means you only need $60 US dollars, instead of $200 US dollars, to get the 20 copies you now want.

But you must add the shipping cost to it – and that has to be checked online at the payment processor. It probably won’t be much different from the $56 or so that they charged for the last order.

So you should be looking at spending $60 + $56 = $120 USD minimum to say $130 or worst case $140 USD, depending on what they charge to ship the 20 copies.

Note however that you also have to factor in the charge for the payment processing platform you use. If I recall correctly, Paypal charges 5% of total payment you make, which is not much of course.

Whatever happens, you will still make major savings, and that low price of $3 USD per book will enable you sell at more attractive prices.

The above is already attractive, but you can get even more…

For instance, by the time you take advantage of bulk discount options often on offer, from publishers like Lulu.com, the margins you enjoy can ramp up in an even nicer way!

Having said the above, rather than sell your books directly, you can make even more money and marketing impact simultaneously, by organizing a learning event to educate people who fit the target audience profile of your book.

It could be a FREE or paid lecture, workshop, or seminar.

Personally I prefer using a FREE or low priced learning event, which interested persons can gain access to by buying the book at a price below the selling price, but above the cost price you purchased bulk copies as the author.

The advert or promo for the event would offer the book at a reduced price, to all those who register to attend. They would have to make payment for their copies before the event, and then come on the d-day with any questions they have, which you would then answer, after your short presentation based on the book.

You would end by mentioning services you provide…

From there some could even hire you to consult for them.

To boost the marketing impact and create more awareness, you could give free invitations to journalists from media houses to attend.

If they like what they see or hear, they would broadcast in their media – but you would not have to pay them.

The planning for this must be done right though, and you could even hold it at regular intervals, say monthly, at different locations, to create awareness.

I used this to sell my books in the past. It works.

My Proposed Not-For-Profit Best Practice Farm Business Support Centre for Farm CEOs: How to Get Involved

My Web Marketing System is really helping the not-for-profit “Best Practice Farm Business Support Centre for Farm CEOs” launch – I’ve been inviting potential contacts from my website database of past enquirers and buyers to make donations towards in Benin Republic.

I continue to marvel at the superbly time, effort and cost-saving manner in which using my Custom Web Marketing System (WMS) generates high quality zero cost leads for solutions I sell, and initiatives I launch.

There are about 700 of them, and I estimate that I have had direct phone conversations with up to 100 of them between 2006 and now.

I believe such people know me, and the work I do, and are more likely to be interested in seeing it grow, and/or gain access to the benefits promised.

Sharing Your Culture and Traditions With Foreigners is REALLY Cool!

It’s strange, and sad – but true: Too many modern day Nigerians readily favour foreign cultures and traditions over theirs. Quite often they regard what is theirs as inferior to what obtains in developed societies.

NB: I happen to be a full blooded 45 year old Nigerian – born and raised in Nigeria. So I state the above based on VERY personal observation and experience, spanning over 3 decades.

Now, unlike us, the Asians have for decades often done the exact opposite.

For instance, people from across the world have embraced various versions of Martial Arts as taught in different parts of Asia, and readily adopt even the Asian language of the society in which they learn.

Same applies to Asian foods, traditional attire and alternative medical remedies and practices e.g. Acupuncture etc.

Here’s another thing: No matter where a Chinese national immigrates, anywhere in the world, it is VERY unlikely that s/he will go looking for paid employment

Instead what they are notorious for doing is STARTING their own businesses, no matter how small e.g. a noodles shop.

In contrast, the average Nigerian that immigrates to another country (especially Europe/America) is more likely to go in search of secure paid employment, and if successful, will try hard to hold on to it for as long as possible.

Having said the above, there are always exceptions to this trend – as it is with everything in life.

In the case of Nigerians, those of the Igbo stock are renowned for their trade and commerce acumen. Especially when they travel to other African countries. They have proven themselves to be especially gifted at establishing thriving buying and selling micro to small businesses.

One could argue that they act this way because most times those who follow this path lack the qualifications to seek and win well paying jobs. But that’s a subject for a separate discussion.

But back to the point I was trying to make about the Nigerian tendency to place more value on what is foreign over what comes uniquely from his/her society…

A person who is uninitiated could be tempted to think Nigeria/Nigerians act as described above, because they do NOT have anything original or unique to show off to the admiration of people from other nations.

I say this with regard to the way a South African, for instance, would give branded gifts from his/her country to a Nigerian, or American, regaling him/her with some historical anecdote relating to the item.

The recipient would excitedly show off the item to loved ones back home, and proudly recount the anecdote told to him/her by the South African. This happens all the time. We all love to own stuff that’s considered special, rare, unusual, unique, treasured etc.

The truth is however that Nigeria/Nigerians do have A LOT in our culture and tradition that can be proudly shown off to foreigners.

And those that visit us SAY SO all the time. I know because I interact with them.

The problem I see is that in today’s Nigeria, too many of us do NOT even know enough of anything about our cultures and traditions.

We have all sorts of wonderful arts and crafts that have beautiful histories behind their emergence. Those engaged in producing the Adire in Ogun state’s Abeokuta for instance have interesting tales to tell about how they have evolved, how they are made, what they are used for, who buys them etc.

A similar situation exists across the country.

But you’re unlikely to find many schooled Nigerians talking about them (if they know about them that is) as excitedly as they talk about the various famed Italian designer brand name clothes and shoes for instance.

Many of our modern artists know more about Western art sculptures than they do about our renowned Benin Bronze carvings.

When they visit us here, we try to impress them by showing off what often tend to be inferior versions of what we bought or copied FROM THEIR societies…rather than show them what we have here they are unlikely to find back home!!

Even in our preference for music, this problem shows up. The lyrics of our songs reflect little or nothing of our African heritage. Instead we continue to ape (often unsuccessfully) the originators from Europe and America.

Only artistes like Beautiful Nubia, Lagbaja, Asa etc offer us anything qualitative on the music plane, based on our original culture and heritage.

Now, just in case you find my comparison of this Nigerian tendency with that of Asians and South Africans too far fetched…

Let me inform you that just next door to us, in Benin Republic, I’ve found from 3 years of living amongst the locals, a FIERCE and unpretentious demonstration of LOVE for their culture and traditions.

This includes both youths and adults of both genders, regardless of educational level and perceived social status.

Based on 3 months I spent on the national university campus in 2013, I believe this love of their culture and traditions is instilled in them from very early in life.

The people of Benin Republic are exposed – like us – to Western culture and traditions through the powerful and pervasive influence Western media and the web, BUT they have refused to let it erode the fabric of their own unique cultural heritage.

I know this because I have seen it play itself out again and again. The youths in Cotonou (the economic capital) are often quite familiar with local songs, practices and dances. And they never betray any embarrassment in revealing that they are.

In fact, it comes naturally to them, and they often want to get you to LEARN their local language over French, their official language.

In Nigeria, the opposite tends to be the case. Not many Nigerians can speak their local languages proficiently. Even adults. But most of us pride ourselves on our perceived mastery of the English language!

Same applies to our demonstrated love for, and knowledge about sporting events and games.

The level of awareness about, and interest in our local games, and sports is very low. We perceive them not to be as refined as those from the white man’s land. So, most of us settle for the latter.

In case you’re wondering, here’s the point I want to make with ALL I’ve said above…

I have long resolved to NEVER be guilty of treating or regarding my culture and traditions as inferior to any other persons’, no matter who they are or what they do. That’s why I embarked on a journey of learning and discovery regarding exploring my Yoruba culture, tradition and ancestry.

In addition, since my wife is Igbo, I am also working on ways to learn useful aspects of her people’s way of life as well.

But it’s not just for myself I do this…

Using what I’m learning, I am progressively exposing my kids to the beneficial parts, so they can arrive adulthood with a more rounded view of who they are, and be proud to show up to others that way, instead of trying to be like them!

Here are 2 recent examples of practical steps I’ve taken to implement my plans:

Ayo is played in societies across West Africa, bearing different names in each location.

The Yorubas call it Ayo. Other names given it are described in the article on this linked page (click).

I bought it on my way to the Seme border last week, and came home thinking I would be the one to teach my kids how to play it.

As it turned out, they already knew how to play it – having been taught by their mother. Within minutes of snatching it from me on the night I arrived, they were “playing away”!

Which brings me to a BIG confession I need to make:

Do you know the irony of this whole Ayo training that I had planned for them? It’s that I did NOT know how to play the game myself, and had NEVER once played it, in my entire life!

My plan had been to use the instructions I found via Google on a web page, about playing the game, to teach them. Instead I found myself listening to them TELL/SHOW me how to play it.

NB: Having said that, the little reading I’ve done tells me it’s meant to be a game of strategy. For now they play it rather mechanically, without putting much thought to it. So I’ll be taking out time to read up more of the fine details of how to play it, and then join them to see how we can make it more interesting.

I’m now confident my kids can play this traditional game: So if/when they have friends visiting from Europe or America, rather than playing a game of Chess or Ludo with them, they may choose to teach their friends to play AYO, so the latter can return home bragging about a new game they learnt.

Incidentally, the Ayo board is made of hand crafted wood, and one can get specially decorated versions suitable for use as gifts to such friends.

In our case, it so happens that we have long time family friends from Sheffield, visiting Nigeria for 2 weeks.

So, I and the kids have agreed that we’ll be presenting them an AYO board game as a gift, to take back with them. Every time they play it back home, we hope they’ll be reminded of their trip, and probably also teach their friends and relatives something new and interesting!

If you’ve been following my writing on the subject of Cost-Saving Farm Business Ideas, you will know that I have written several pieces that stress the importance of farmers developing the healthy habit of data recording and analysis for timely and accurate decision making.

I found it quite interesting that the farmers interviewed asserted that they did not keep records mainly because it was “not beneficial” to them.

That, to me, is a clear indication of the need for proper education and reorientation of the farmers about the powerful Key Performance Indicators, they can quickly, and easily track to manage their farms more profitably.
