To Succeed, You Need to be a Problem Solver [True Story: Real Life Problem Solving Email Conversation With New Buyer of my Excel-VB Ration Formulator App]

Finding buyers for your products/services can be hard, but what is even harder is GETTING and KEEPING those buyers satisfied, so they do NOT feel what is called “buyer’s remorse” and demand their money back, or refuse to give you repeat business.

Having said the above, let’s be clear about one thing though:

You CANNOT please all your clients. There will be those with whom you simply will not be a good fit – and it will be NO FAULT OF YOURS. When that happens, you must be ready to let such people go. NEVER make the mistake of assuming you have to keep all clients at all costs.

In other words, client attrition is a necessary evil (I call it a blessing) that ALL of us will have to deal with every now and then.

What is crucial however is that you ensure that you keep it as low as possible, and ensure it does NOT happen with those you know are your ideal clients i.e people who fit your target audience profile.

In my case, I learned YEARS ago that NOT all buyers deserve to be my clients, so I’ve developed a screening system to identify and keep such people out of my network of potential buyers as much as possible.

With that system in place, I then go all out to use my marketing arsenal to rope in those who remain, and ultimately sell to some of them.

However, once a sale happens, I DO NOT go to sleep!

Instead, I stay alert for ANY issues that may be raised by the new buyer – even as I keep close contact (via periodic email, Whatsapp and phonecall “Hellos”) with even older clients.

If s/he (or any of the others) raises ANY issue with the solution provided, I instantly click into my accelerated Support Service Provision mode.

During this phase, I draw on all my knowledge and experience, as well as information from past client interactions, to help the client get the desired outcome in using the solution delivered to him/her.

I’m proud to say that 95% of the time time, I have succeeded in addressing raised issues, earning myself the client’s subsequent appreciation

In many cases, that ended up opening the way for more up-selling opportunities in the future, and at some point a real lasting friendship with him/her.

The screenshots and email transcripts reproduced below, illustrate a real life example in which I employed the strategy described in this article, very recently, to solve a problem for a “newly minted” buyer of my Excel-VB Ration Formulator app.

Good morning
I was so busy during the Salah break that I was unable to down and run the RF app. However I was able to download the RF-Exports.xls , data-appended.xls and the zipped folder that contains the picture guides. And also the 4 YouTube videos. It seems these 2 excel files are not the main app for the ration Formulator because I could not find the login screen in order to use the password you provided in your email. Thanks

Hi Aliyu,

See attached file named Aliyu-PFM-Login-Screenshots.pdf

My conversation with you indicates you’ve most likely got this covered…but I still include it because of the details I added regarding the Mac OS

Excerpt: If you’re having this experience while trying to run it on your Mac then it’s understandable/expected. Like I told you, my apps are built using Windows based MS Excel version which uses VBA code syntax that’s not fully compatible with that in the Mac OS version of MS Excel.

My advice is that you run the app on a PC that runs Windows for best results.

However, below are 2 articles I’ve written to offer information, education and basic support for Mac users who have bought from me:

1. http://tayosolagbade.com/sdnuggets/you-need-this-zero-cost-app-for-trouble-free-use-of-excel-vb-windows-based-apps-in-excel-for-mac/

NOW, here’s another possibility to consider:

I just recalled that a past client (by name “Ekene”) experienced a problem (for another of my software – The Poultry Farm Manager) which was due to a compatibility conflict between my app (which was developed for 32 bit MS Office) and 64bit MS Office installation on his system.

I’m not sure if this might be the case with you. The attached PDF explains how to check which of the 32 or 64 bit MS Office versions you have on your PC.

However, as long as what you have on your PC is a licensed version of MS Office, the instructions in the attached PDF will easily resolve the conflict for you.

Otherwise, you may need to reinstall MS office and choose to install the 32 bit version this time around.

Full details of how you may have ended up having the 64 bit version installed for you is given in the attached PDF – based on information I compiled from the Microsoft forums.

I’ll call you once I send this email off to you.

Cheers,

Tayo
PS: Note that the PDF was prepared based on error reports sent me by Ekene, which differ from yours. I’m however not sure if they may be due to the same root cause. So I recommend you read all 3 pages carefully, then follow the -prescribed steps from pages 2 to 3.

Knowing How to Code Is NOT Enough for Spreadsheet Programming Success [MUST READ: FREE PDF Introduction to Excel-VB Programming by J.Latham]

[NB: This is a non-password protected educational piece for members of my Excel Heaven Visual Basic Automation Club]

In 2007, it cost my brother-in-law (Segun Ogunlana) about $34 USD to buy me a copy of the 1st edition of Professional Excel Development: The Definitive Guide to Developing Applications Using Microsoft Excel, VBA, and .NET

Today, given the crazy Nigerian Naira Exchange rate of N430 to $1 USD, that US dollar sum comes to approximately N15,000 (Fifteen Thousand Naira).

Now, even though this Excel Bible offers a lot more than the FREE Excel-VB PDF learning resource I will talk about further down, added to the fact that it is not really for beginners, I believe (and I explain why, below) getting the PDF ebook I recommend here for FREE is really a bargain!

Below are screenshots from selected pages of this PDF

I should add here that the author got my attention the most when I saw the effort he made to provide examples of how to use FORMS(intelligently enhanced with ActiveX controls) as data sources in automating MS Excel – (as can be seen from the interfaces in my apps – click here) for the ease of use it affords users, especially those who are novices or not Excel savvy.

I’ve never believed in reinventing the wheel:
Just knowing how to code, no matter how good you are, is not enough.

It’s important to establish a guiding philosophy to steer you right in doing what you do, if you want to succeed for the long term.

My background in Best Practice and Continuous Improvement based Performance Improvement has always helped me stay focused on what matters, which is GETTING NEEDED RESULTS and SOLVING PROBLEMS in a way that meets felt needs, resulting in progress for my clients – and, by implication, me.

Being skilled is only one dimension of the requirements for succeeding in any field.

Excel-VB Programming is no exception.

I say all this to impress upon you the importance of having the right mindset and orientation to deliver Excel-VB solutions that work for others.

A sound understanding of the experience based insights I share here can make a less skilled Excel-VB expert achieve greater success in terms of solving client problems as well as making money, compared to a rival who is more gifted at coding, but lacks these insights.

To put it simply, you will be all about using your know-how to solve user’s problem and NOT to impress or intimidate them. In otherwords, no attitude issues – which is a challenge some gifted programmers tend to have!

My understanding of the above, is why – In coaching others to program MS Excel using VBA – I regularly point them towards resources, on and off the web, that they can take advantage of, beyond whatever I may offer them, to become more proficient in VBA Solutions Development.

As I explained above, I belong to the school of thought that one must avoid falling into the mental trap of placing too much emphasis on programming or coding for the sake of it.

Instead, especially for those of us engaged in use of MS Excel to develop custom apps for busy users with unique needs, we MUST NEVER lose sight of the fact that solving the problem of our “user” is why we exist as providers.

So, we simply cannot afford to fall into the mindset of (some) conventional programmers who tend to be rigid in the way they go about doing what they do, and who typically refuse to try interacting with prospective end users in a manner that makes it easy for the latter to influence the development process.

It is my considered opinion, that to succeed in using MS Excel programming, one must think and act like a SOLUTIONS DEVELOPER and not just as a PROGRAMMER.

To do that, you will need to remember at all times that showing off your coding skills is not needed. Instead, learning how to optimally utilize your knowledge of MS Excel-VB Programming, to produce results specified by your client or employer will be the key to your long term success.

Without the above understanding, anyone who ventures into programming, especially using MS Excel-VB is likely to encounter considerable difficulty giving clients what they want, in a manner that satisfies them.

The above mentioned philosophy has over the years guided me to make efficient and effective use of my time and effort in serving clients.

So, rather than obsess excessively over coding to impress clients, I have learned to identify smart and time/effort saving ways to deliver results my clients want.

Sometimes doing that actually requires doing LESS or NO coding, and instead exploring smart techniques for using the MS Excel engine itself to deliver the desired automation.

A good example is the powerful dynamic report generation template shown below, that I created for the National Distribution Manager of a Telecoms Multinational during a private coaching session I had with him.

Click below or here to visit the page where I use two videos to show this powerful report in use (scroll half-way down the page)

Screenshot of a tutorial workbook I created several years ago, for the National Distribution Manager of a large multinational telecoms company (The Logistics Department hired me) - Click to view larger image in new window

Without using a single line of code, and depending ONLY on spreadsheet based features and functions in Excel, I setup the above shown interface that enabled him generate ANY scenarios he wanted at the click of a mouse on a menu item or button.

This is what I mean when I tell those I coach that the right mindset/mental attitude or THINKING is crucial to succeeding in Excel-VB Solutions Development.

[RECOMMENDED] Programming In Excel VBA – An Introduction (.pdf File) – By J.Latham

The above explained mental attitude is what makes me keen to expose those who learn from me, to resources that I have found helpful in developing myself to function competently as required.

This week, I refer you to a useful PDF resource, which – though a bit dated – having been prepared based on an old version of MS Excel, still offers considerably useful information and education for Successful VBA Programming in MS Excel.

Not only does it feature useful techniques and concepts, it also provides real world relevant examples and illustrations of virtually every aspect of VBA coding you will need to know to function competently as a developer.

Most importantly, it offers references to other expert resources, in form of highly competent/recognized MS Excel -VB professionals whose works you can study.

Now, here’s the best part: Despite offering such a comprehensive body of ready-to-use practical tips and wisdom on Excel-VB Solutions Development, this PDF does NOT cost anything i.e it is 100% FREE!

And that’s why I recommend that you download and read this PDF. Click here to visit the author’s site, where the PDF and several useful Projects Workbooks (with project code visible in the Visual Basic Editor) are available for download and study.

Like I said, it is a bit dated, but I believe it still offers useful foundation that you can build on.

Indeed it is instructive to note that there are still MANY business users who still work in older versions of MS Excel, due to the fact that they feel their needs continue to be well catered for by those versions (say from 2003 upwards).

As a developer, you need to take pains to make your solutions reasonably backward compatible, to ensure you don’t alienate a section of your target users who may be using relatively older Excel versions.

Only people who use pirated versions of the latest MS Excel will find it hard to understand why someone would choose not to install the so called latest version of Excel on his/her PC.

In developed societies for example, where piracy is not widespread, most business users do a cost-benefit analysis in order to decide whether or not to pay what is often NOT a light fee to upgrade to the new or latest version.

So, any developer looking to build and sell apps to such users would need to make his/her apps adaptable to running trouble-free on old as well as new versions.

In the course of future tutorials, I will periodically refer you to the contents of this PDF, to facilitate your comprehension of project based exercises you will be doing.

Find Buyers for Your Products – Ideas for ANYONE to Get Started at ZERO COST [Featuring a List of 9 Resource Articles On How to Earn Passive Income Selling Your Artwork]

Quick Take-Away

I got inspired to write this piece after encountering several truly gifted artist expressing doubts about how to sell their wonderful art works.

So, this article features efforts of a real life artist to use social media to promote his works, as well as a list of 9 MUST READ Resource Articles On How to Earn Passive Income Selling Your Artwork.

It should however be noted that the ideas advocated can be successfully adapted for use in selling ANY other products, or indeed services.

It Pays to “Buy” Your Own Space On the Web – and Use It as a Launch Pad for Your Marketing

Over the past decade of using the web for business, I’ve learned that it’s smarter to have your own space, that you control, from which you then routinely publish and propagate your content on to any other promotional platforms.

Typically that means having – at least – a website.

I say this because time has shown that third party platforms, no matter how successful can always change how they work (or even fail) in a way that could disrupt the income earning system you setup on them.

If you have your own flagship website (e.g www.yourname.com), it becomes quite easy to modify references and URL on it to reflect such changes, with minimal disruption to your visibility or leads generation.

However, experience has also taught me that a website is not enough.

You see, to achieve optimal long term/sustainable leads generating marketing exposure, you need to harness a combination of web based resources in conjunction with your website.

[NB: I call it having a Web Marketing System (WMS). View a one page mind-map that I used to illustrate what I mean by a WMS here. Also click here to request access to my video explanation of the 9 key components of a WMS: I’ll email it to you]

But all that cannot be done overnight.

Indeed for most people who are good at what they do, but are not so tech or web savvy, doing it all – and doing it right – can be overwhelming!

I know this to be so from years of supporting gifted experts to implement WMS towards achieving improved name/brand recognition for quality sales leads generation.

That’s why I sometimes encourage such persons to start from a social media platform like Facebook e.g with a business promotion page.

For instance, if you are a painter/artist looking to make money, you can begin by setting up and featuring your artworks on your Facebook business page, with description, prices etc.

From there, you can link to a website(s) where your full gallery is on display.

Regarding use of free Facebook business page marketing here’s an example of what I have in mind(click this link): https://facebook.com/kolaartlinks

Regarding use of free Facebook business page marketing here's an example of what I have in mind(click here):

It’s a page setup some months ago by a young artiste based in Lagos.

I’d been seeing his paintings of famous personalities arranged on a church building’s wall along a major road for years, and knew he would get better marketing exposure if he leveraged the web the way I did/do.

NB: I earn over 80% of my income -passively – by selling PDF information products, custom Excel-VB software, audio podcasts and video tutorials, as well as my writing/web marketing services online).

So, one day when I came in from Cotonou, and ran into him at the neighborhood cafe, I told him what I had in mind, and got the needed information and graphics to kick-start the page.

The guy has not looked back since – and has been adding all sorts of enhancements.

His natural Facebook likes indicate he’s getting noticed.

But I notice he’s yet to begin doing the “connecting” with page members that I’ve challenged him to do. By this I mean writing new content to post, beyond sharing photos of products he wishes to sell. This is the key to attracting potential buyers to reach out to you.

Like I told him, all he needs is focused dedication to making creative updates to the page’s contents.

By sharing – for instance – the true story behind each product he showcases, and case studies of different client conversations he’s had, and sales he’s made (like I do on this blog), it’ll only be a matter of time before the inquiries begin to come in via the Facebook page.

The same applies to ANYONE else who diligently and intelligently makes use of the ideas offered in this piece.

You see, before people will buy from you with any degree of readiness, they first of all have to notice, like, and then trust you.

That process rarely happens instantly or overnight. And depending on what you’re selling, and who you’re trying to sell to, it can take a lot of time and work.

That’s why it’s best to do things that help to move as many of your potential clients as possible, towards TRUSTING you.

My success in getting total strangers send payment to me from in and out of Africa, at zero cost, is proof that using the content marketing strategy I advocate here, works.

PS: Like I said at the start, I wrote this article with artists in mind. So, if you’re looking for ideas about how to sell your artworks, here’s a list of potentially useful resource articles/pages you may wish to explore. I dug them up via a quick Google search

Get my Customizable Excel-VB Church Records Manager FREE [N50k Value]: True Story + Screenshots Inside

In 2007, I got hired by the “Warden” of a popular large non-protestant congregational church in Lagos, to build this Excel-VB driven Church Records Manager app.

This happened a few weeks after I’d completed the maiden phase of a large automation project for his consulting firm, which involved generating dynamic reports from a National Scale Primary Health Care Database (the project continued in phases for about 4 years).

NB: The client paid for it from his own pocket as a “donation” (At the end of this post, I explain how you can get it free).

In other words, this Church Records Manager job came by way of repeat business.

I actually up-sold the idea to him while we were working on the database project, and he mentioned challenges he was having using a large unwieldy MS Excel spreadsheet to handle the different church records in his spare time.

This client remains a friend (and mentor of sorts) today.

Last year, when I paid him a visit in his office, he requested my help in resetting the app for use in the Church office, following some changes to the computer setup there.

In building the app, I’d worked closely with him (and the church’s office staff).

To meet their requirements, I recall clearly is that my habit of keeping a “black box” or reusable code from other projects I’d done, turned out to be a huge time saver.

Each time they requested for a particular feature, I often found that it was related to one that I’d taken care of in a previous client’s project, and so I only needed to make slight modifications to adapt it to suit their needs.

From generating automated notifications and reminders of members’ birthday anniversary celebrations, to allowing dynamic query of the database (using various field parameters), to enabling tracking of bank related handling of church monies for reconciliation – and more.

Due to budget limitations, my modeless floating dynamic menu driven data entry forms (like the ones in my Bank Transactions Monitor (BTM) ™Excel-VB Driven App) could not be incorporated into it, to reduce manual data entry effort required.

That notwithstanding, this basic app’s novice-proof GUI design made it unnecessary for the user to be Excel savvy. Typically, as is the case with my other apps a user could get started using it competently within a few hours of interaction.

The screenshots below highlight some of the key interfacess in the app

1. This is the Splash Screen that shows when the app is opened in MS Excel – after Macros are ENABLED.

2. After the app is fully loaded into MS Excel, this custom login form interface appears. The user is assigned a username and case sensitive password to use.

3. Once logged in, this Main Menu appears.

NB: This is a standard feature I found useful to include in all my apps. Very intuitive. Anywhere in the app, this menu can be called up by pressing the ENTER key while the cursor is on the spreadsheet. Alternatively, the Main Menu button placed at the top of the spreadsheet interfaces can be clicked to load the menu.

4. This is the spreadsheet table formatted to hold up to 50,000 records.

Note that I’ve also built Excel-VB apps that link to a backend database to retrieve data to be used for trending/analysis and report generation. However, I’ve found that clients (mostly individuals/SMEs) have preferred everything to be in Excel, because they felt their needs were relatively small.

PII 029 [Best Practice Parenting]: Could Your Child’s Teacher be Misinformed?

When a “teacher” at a religious retreat, in discussing “Creation” told children that a white couple could NOT produce a black baby, none of them raised any objection.

But when she went on to say a Black couple could equally NOT produce a white baby, 2 siblings – a 13 year old boy and a 10 year old girl – reacted.

The girl tried to stifle a giggle. But she was out in front, so the “teacher” readily noticed, and asked what was funny. She quickly said “Nothing”.

But her brother raised his hand and said “Aunty, black people can give birth to white babies”. The “teacher” promptly told him that was “not possible”, and continued with her lecture.

Later at home, the kids told their father about the incident, and they all laughed.

Now, in case YOU wonder, the kids were right – and their “teacher” was wrong: Black couples giving birth to white babies is a scientific – though remote (about one in a million) – possibility.

But it is no longer just a possibility.

It has already happened – as Google search results reveal.

The kids and their father laughed because they knew (from their online studies) about a New York post report (and a video) of such a case.

A. One example: Black Parents Give Birth to White Baby (It happened!)

1. “baby Nmachi is a blond, blue-eyed white baby born to two black Nigerian immigrant parents at a London hospital.”

You can watch the video in which the couple was interviewed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhkYTkzjQVs

2. Here’s the New York Post report http://nypost.com/2010/07/21/blond-bombshell/

B. Another example: A Black and White couple can give birth to either white or black babies or both (It happened!)

Once again, this was a one in a million possibility.

Learners in our schools traditionally look up to “teachers” trusting that they KNOW-IT-ALL…

But do they? Or can they?

The teacher in the above story was NOT up-to-date on the subject she was teaching.

By implication, she was doing the kids a disservice, failing to give them the most current information and education on the subject of discussion.

Had the brother and sister not had learning sessions with their father who’d shown them the widely reported news story about the white baby born to black parents, they would have accepted their “teacher’s” submission as true.

And this is the tragedy of the schooling systems we have today.

Most of them have no quality controls in place to ensure kids get accurate, up-to-date and useful real-world-relevant knowledge passed on to them.

Isn’t school supposed to prepare us for the world we are to enter after “graduating” from it?

Of course it should.

Should “schooled” people not be well informed about what happens or can happen in society?

Of course they should.

But sadly our traditional schools often tend to deliver obsolete content to learners.

This is typically because most of those who manage those schools fail to diligently update themselves to better serve their learners. To make matters worse, those “teachers” do NOT believe they do NOT know, making them end up misleading majority of the learners who may NOT explore alternative options (like the Internet) to learn more!

Conventional Schooling – or what I like to call “Academic education” provided in our schools – stopped being enough to prepare learners to succeed predictably, especially outside paid employment, YEARS ago.

Compared to the benefits it offers for achieving worthwhile success and significance in today’s world, the time we spend on it is often too much.

Half that time is better spent giving income earning Vocational Education.

Unfortunately we have wrong quality of people teaching in our conventional schools – especially out here in Nigeria.

The best among us who should be involved in teaching feel it is beneath us. So we leave it to the least gifted/competent among us who settle for teaching after failing to secure better options.

Unlike Mrs. A. A Solagbade, my Montessori trained (now retired) teacher mother, they are NOT motivated to teach. Unlike her, it was not their first love when they ventured into the schooling system.

The teaching job was a last resort for them. They therefore feel little or no passion to do it – and do it right.

Little wonder that they readily cut corners by accepting money to do unethical things like awarding marks not merited.

And of course that’s why we have Special (Legitimised Cheating) Examination Centers and people buying/selling results and certificates.

How can we expect a system like that to DELIVER authentic quality of EDUCATION???

It won’t…at least not half as often as it ought to.

Even the child that gets good grades academically without corner cutting is likely to suffer major exposure to character deforming display of morals and values by teachers, parents and other adults who openly engage in these shameful acts without suffering any negative consequences.

It would be naïve to assume that THAT will not make a lasting impression on the psyche of that child – no matter what lectures you give him/her at home about knowing right from wrong, and the value of honesty, integrity, hard work etc!

What a price to pay!

This is why I’ve taken what others consider drastic steps to control exposure of my kids to the schooling systems prevalent out here.

My kids are learning vocational skills alongside relevant school subjects on a need to know basis based on discussions I’ve had with them about what they would like to do/become in life.

Today, Computer based learning systems with teachers teaching school subjects according to the curriculum for the UK GCSE exams equivalent are accessible for interested persons.

Today, people get degrees and other certifications through distance learning.

My kids have are being trained to leverage technology to acquire Functional Education.

The Internet has proven to be a most valuable resource in this regard – when used correctly (and I have over a decade of personal experience using it that way).

Homeschooling is being embraced worldwide. You don’t have to do it 100%. Vary your use of the model to suit your needs or preferences. Just be sure not to deny your kids access to the powerful learning benefits it offers.

You see, wearing school uniform does NOT guarantee learning. Leaving home to attend school is NOT the only way to learn. Especially if you want to get a complete/balanced education.

In conventional schooling systems, out here, kids are being made to spend tooooooo much time in school reading/writing, and tooooooo little time is left for them to Think and Do and make sense/productive use of what they see and are taught.

My kids are being given that balanced mix. Indeed once a child can read and write, the thinking and doing is more important than any other schooling inputs. That’s why we have many unschooled or poorly schooled people who succeed in life by doing what they are good at.

That’s what real education is about: finding out/narrowing down to what you’re good at, then doing it to achieve the success you want in life.

It’s simple. But it works. My life is proof of it. That’s why I’m determined to empower my kids to get a similar kind of education – as against mere (mind-numbing) conventional schooling.

The article linked below was published on 27th August 2014 – exactly 2 years ago. We’ve come a LOOOOONG way since then!

Prepare Your Child to Succeed by Learning to Overcome Rejection Using Persistence & PMA (Lessons from Tayo Solagbade’s Maiden “Selling Skills Development” Project for Kids)

Vocational Skills Development is an important foundation for succeeding anywhere.

In the coaching program I’m implementing for my kids, there’s a lot of verbal coaching and experience sharing that takes place daily, in addition to the experience based learning.

It’s important to realize that getting an education is not a competition to see who finishes first or best. Each child’s need will often be unique in some areas.

Parents would be wise to pay attention to what each child needs in this regard. Most teachers/schools don’t.

I do – because I have passion and vision to support my kids to overcome the annoyances I’ve encountered in society.

Speaking and writing good English is NOT enough today. Neither is getting a First Class honours degree from the university.

This article has explained why it is so.

Those who are honest with themselves will agree that the above is true. However, I know some are likely to disagree. But that will not change the reality!

Final Words

For those who may choose to challenge the argument I have made here, I offer the following words:

It is said that in order to criticize constructively, one must first of all make genuine effort to understand that which we wish to criticize.

I’ve found that to be quite true. Sadly many well schooled otherwise intelligent adults/parents refuse to see it!

I urge you to do that BEFORE you discard the ideas offered on this page.

What I’m doing with my kids with regard to vocational skills development is what all parents today need to do for their kids.

One must NOT wait for schools to come up with (what are often out here) money-collecting, watery content, vocational skills coaching programs they organize during the holidays.

Make out time to find out what appeals to YOUR child and help him/her get started. Then monitor and support his/her progress over time.

That way, anything the school does in this regard will simply be like icing on the cake. S/he would have established a foundation to build on.

It’s never too early to help your child find passion driven purpose in life – and you’ll make your parenting of him/her easier in the process!

Make out time to celebrate milestone achievements with him/her by taking photos of what s/he makes, and also recording videos of the process involved while s/he is doing it.

I can tell you from working with all my kids in this manner that doing so really makes them develop more interest and passion to do it right. and they LOVE reviewing the photos and videos afterwards.

Another thing is that such resources often come in handy if/when they have to do it again, at a time when they have yet to be fully conversant with what is involved. Being able to watch the videos of themselves doing it, provides an excellent avenue to identify steps involved, and also to detect what they did wrong, or could do better.

I’ve seen my kids work as a team countless times to use their recipe note books, in conjunction with photos and videos from past projects to repeat a baking or other project to achieve superior results.

When kids become independent learners able to challenge themselves to achieve improved performances, even in your absence, then THAT is a good sign that you are succeeding as a coach-parent.

How To Get The URL for a FACEBOOK Post, status or comment

This video demonstrates the steps I described in the answer to my FACEBOOK PRODUCTIVITY QUESTION (posted 4th December 2011) – which was as follows:

“Sometimes you want to tell OTHERS about a certain Facebook post, that interested you. The “Share” feature does NOT work in cases when you need to share the Post in a comment or outside Facebook(e.g. via email). You NEED the URL of the Facebook post. Do you know “How to get the URL or Link of a Facebook post or status”?”

[RECOMMENDED] “Why I’ll never wear hair extensions again” – by pop star Jamelia (BBC Report) & “The hair trade’s dirty secret” – by TheGuardian.com]

It was in 2012 that I first watched a documentary revealing shocking details about the source of hair extensions eagerly bought by many Black women.

That video revealed shocking facts highlighted in the BBC sponsored investigative report (featuring an interview of a young female Black Pop Star – Jamelia).

I’ve linked to the full piece below (published via BellaNaija.com in December 2008) which reveals that human hair used is commonly obtained via the following sources…

[NB: At the end of this post, I also link to an unflattering Life and style report, by UK’s The Guardian newspaper titled “The hair trade’s dirty secret”]

1. Religious Sacrifice:

E.g Little Hindu kids have their hair scraped (some crying) as Religious Sacrifice to cure illness or ward off evil

Adult Hindus/the kids’ parents do same.

These religious-practitioner donors, assume their hair gets thrown away.

However, as Jemelia said (which the video I watched 4 years ago confirms): most have no idea their hair gets sold!

That’s why she says: ” to me, it appears to be the ultimate in exploitation.”

I agree 100% with her.

2. White females who cut/sell their hair for money e.g in places like Russia.

3. Corpses(?): Jamelia says someone hinted that some of the hairs could be taken off corpses!

Little wonder that she’s vowed never to wear those extensions again!

Personally, I’ve never liked the idea of pinning another human being’s hair to one’s head in an effort to look “more beautiful” (whatever that means).

All these revelations now justify the position I’ve adopted.

For me, accepting to use such products was simply a sign of a lack of healthy self-esteem or at best mis-orientation.

That’s why I encourage my daughters to LOVE their hair, as it is.

Indeed, I’ve gone a step further to invest time in personally helping them nurture and dress their hair naturally e.g using Sheabutter.

The results have excited my 10 year old girl enough to make her confidently go on outings wearing the “style” I work her hair into.

In the course of doing this I’ve discovered that I actually enjoy exploring creative ways to help my girls make their hair.

Yep. I’m their father, yet I love working on their hair!

So I plan to attend a short hairdressing (NOT hair attaching!) training to formally learn what it involves.

My purpose is however to do it with little or no chemical based hair treatment products.

I believe that by so doing, as a man, I can help my girls see and believe in their natural hair.

If more men would just take interest in helping the females in their lives make the most of their natural hair, they’re likely to feel less psychologically pressured to join the rat race of human hair extension wearing – with it’s attendant risks and indignities!

Read the BBC investigative report/interview:

I’m glad Jamelia had the courage to do, and also say, what many otherwise intelligent women of her kind have failed to do!

Read the full piece below. I’ll see if I can find and add the link to the video I watched in 2012.

Be Willing to ACKNOWLEDGE Good in Others Even If They are Rivals and You’ll Succeed Better

It’s easy to show and voice approval of something or someone you like or admire. We all do it everyday.

But what if you see (read or hear about) a person you dislike (or even hate) do(ing) something good or worth being commended for, what would you do?

Yes…what would YOU do?

Would you be willing to put your feelings about that person you dislike (or even hate) aside, and openly acknowledge or commend him/her for doing that “good/commendable” thing in spite of any reservations you have?

Or would you choose to ignore it, and wait instead for when next s/he will do something you can disagree with, in line with your feelings about him/her.

The proper way to behave in situations like those described above is readily obvious to any person willing to be fair minded and objective.

And that is you would be wise to: put your feelings about him aside, and openly acknowledge or commend him/her.

Indeed, you could even go further and reach out to him/her based on the above, to find ways to mend fences or reduce the differences you have with one another. So much so, that at some point both of you, and/or those you represent or lead may find cause to relate more amicably with one another.

What I have said above can be applied in a variety of social situations – be they formal, informal or non-formal.

Our ability to progress in various areas of our lives as individuals and groups, is greatly dependent on a willingness to be fair and impartial in our routine assessment and interpretation of one another’s words and actions.

Not only should we be willing and determined to exercise restraint in adopting negative mental attitudes towards the other party, we should also be keen to adopt positive perspectives in relating with one another – including SEE and ACKNOWLEDGING the good in the other person(s).

Failure to do that will breed bitterness and resentment, which will over time build up into hate – making it almost impossible for any problems you have to ever be resolved.

And THAT would imply mutually beneficial progress would be difficult to achieve.

Such situations are what result in stagnation in societal development. Some countries today suffer severe lack of developmental advancement due to the problem described here. It exists in their socio-cultural, socio-economic as well as socio-political circles. And it’s killing them as a people – slowly, but surely.

1. I know one country that has this problem.

Indeed virtually every country has it, but in varying degrees.

This country has however kept itself in a leading position in world affairs, for decades, because its people EMBRACE a culture of being willing to SEE and ACKNOWLEDGING the good in the other person(s), even if they do not like him/her for certain faults.

And their actions are often guided by the LOVE they feel for their nation, and their desire to make sure it does NOT fail or fall.

As a result, even when they support or like a certain person, if they see him/her display traits or tendencies that threaten the common good of ALL citizens, majority of them rarely hesitate to call that person out, and subsequently join forces, even with “rivals” against that individual.

That habit has helped that country defeat all forms of adversity for decades.

2. I know ANOTHER country, that despite all it’s hackneyed “potential”, remains a crawling giant right till this day because this sad condition pervades its length and breadth.

Even when the “good/commendable” thing done by the person or group they “dislike (or even hate)” directly benefits ONLY THEM, the people afflicted with this negative mentality are so mean that they will either ignore it, or find ways to misinterpret the motives of the doer(s)!

What a wasteful way to live!

If only the PEOPLE would wake up and see the harm they do to one another…then a GIANT would truly be born in the shape and form of this nation, on the world stage!

Get my Customizable Excel-VB Hotel Restaurant & Bar Manager FREE [N50k Value]: True Story + Screenshots Inside

In 2005 I built a custom MS Excel-VB driven Restaurant & Bar Manager app for a Lagos based outfit.

It was designed to help the owner (who today is serving a second term in the Lagos State House of Assembly) do the following:

1. Use the computer to very easily, and accurately record their restaurant and bar operations raw sales/expense data for data analysis, trending and report generation, without having to undergo the pains of acquiring elaborate PC/Software user skills.

2. Maintain an accurate inventory of all food products, prices and period ending totals(you get daily, monthly and Year Till Date/Annual totals and percentages; profit margins estimates etc).

You simply had to do daily posting of raw sales/expenses data using the automated custom data entry forms provided.

Improving on the first version: Between 2007 and 2009 I built 2 new variants for medium-large hotel clients

Each app has a restaurant module, incorporating the major features and functions of the Restaurant & Bar Manager.

1. The first one was called “Hotel Records Management System (HRMS)™”.

Built in November 2006.

It worked across an intranet (setup in the client hotel), allowing different hotel departments to post entries into seperate but interlinked workbook modules, which were all connected to a central reports generation workbook..

2. The second app version is called “Hotel Restaurant & Bars Manager (HRBM)™”

Built in April 2008.

It’s a single workbook application, like the Restaurant & Bar Manager.

This latest version has enjoyed greater acceptance by business owners.

This is mainly because I took the pains to incorporate key features from the first two apps, based on my observation of users, and evaluation of client feedback.

All my apps can be customised – or built from scratch – for other outfits to accommodate any peculiarities in their individual operations.

Over the past decade, I’ve learnt that most business owners and business users in my primary target market (Africa), often have widely varying preferences regarding their data handling and report generation needs.

This is why I’ve had great success offering “customizable” spreadsheet automation solutions to them.

Most recently, just over the weekend, two long term clients took up my promo offer of this newest version, and I’m now personalizing a copy using data emailed to me by one of them, who is starting up a Restaurant & Bar outfit with his spouse.
