LEARN a Foreign Language to Give You More Options for Success Achievement

Less than a month ago, I wrote about Salifou Moumouni, a friend I have here in Benin, when he got married. Below is a photo we took about 2 weeks ago, after he’d returned from Parakou, where the wedding took place.

It was taken on the 8th September 2015, in the mobile phone shop he manages here in Cotonou. I actually stopped over on my way back to Lagos (having only just arrived the night before!) due to the sudden demise of my laptop charger.

The second photo below, was taken just 2 hours ago, this afternoon (Saturday 12th September 2015) in front of the BenAfrique transport company’s bus park, close to Etoile Rouge, here in Cotonou.

The young man with me in the photo is Boco Mahousé – also a Beninese citizen.

He was one of those I shared a room with back in Calavi, during my first 3 months in Benin Republic, before I later found and rented a room back in Cotonou.

While we were together, he proved himself to be very consistent in character. We met today, for the first time since I left Calavi in 2013. He’d ridden down on his motor bike from Bohicon, to see me.

After a meal and conversations about our plans, we’ve agreed that I’ll be going down to visit him at home hopefully in the coming week, to explore an alternative strategy I’ve settled on regarding relocating my family, and starting a farm based business with my kids.

Now, here’s the main reason – apart from appreciating him – that I’m sharing this bit of news about Mahousé…

You see, he can barely say more than a few greetings in English. But he speaks smart French.

In fact, he has an accent and grammer comprehension of the language, that I consider superior to that of his peers out here.

As a result, if I could not speak the language proficiently, I would NEVER have been able to have the quality of conversation I had with him today.

More importantly, I would NOT have been able to tap from his wealth of knowledge and insights about possibilities, regarding the plans I have in mind.

My point?

It’s that anyone who wants to EXPAND the world of opportunities available to him/her needs to identify and diligently LEARN a foreign language

Back in 1999, I decided French was that language for me, based on the vision I had of becoming a Pan African solutions provider.

Today, the ability to read, write and speak French continues to attract wonderful friendships and opportunities for advancement to me. As things stand, I can competently find my way across West Africa, without problems.

As a result, I’m able to enjoy close to, if not THE BEST of multiple worlds!

I recommend that you do what I’ve done (learn at least one foreign language), so you can avoid being limited by your location, in terms of your achievements..

To be Perpetually Super Productive Without Suffering a Burnout, Learn to Replenish Your Body (3 Tips)

This is not about buying clothes or other material things for yourself. Instead I refer to your ability to
replenish yourself mentally, emotionally/psychologically, and physiologically. How well you rest/relax and rejuvenate yourself is of crucial importance to your ability to succeed on a continual basis for the long term.

People who have a passion for what they do sometimes tend to unconsciously pursue it at the expense of their personal well being.

If no one helps them stop doing that before it’s too late, the results could negatively impact them health wise, and in the long run keep them from enjoying whatever fruits their efforts may eventually yield.

You must come to an understanding of your body and its needs.

I like to tell people that I “listen” to my body. It tells me what it needs and when – and I make sure I give it just that, every time. This is why I’m able to turn out such a high work rate, equivalent to what 4 people would do, in a particular time period, without looking or feeling strained in anyway.

Indeed, most people half my age (I was 45 on 6th July 2015) cannot match me in the way I work – be it physically, or intellectually.

I’ve proven this many times in the course of working with clients and associates. I say this not to brag. It’s a statement of fact meant to illustrate the importance of applying the ideas I offer here.

My work related stamina is intimidating – as I can go on for well over 24 hours at a stretch, writing articles, reading, browsing, coding my Excel-VB apps, training and speaking, and in between of all that, I shuttle between 2 countries.

Average sleep time I get per day is 4 to 6 hours, depending on the work I have to do. Regardless of how long I sleep however, it never tells on my because I’ve learnt to give my body what it needs, and trained it (via relentless daily exercising) to deliver what I want, so it serves me well when it matters most.

3 tips you can use…

1. There will be times when you have pushed yourself very hard for long stretches of time, and your body will scream for a break, You would be wise to let it have that break. Else, you’ll break down from exhaustion.

2. If you fail to eat well, you will not have enough energy replenishment, and that will affect not just
your productivity but also your health. You would not be helping yourself by falling ill during your start-up period!

3. Then there is the issue of exercising. I was a very active sports person – competing at state level in handball – for over a decade (starting from when I was twelve).Even after I quit active handball to take up corporate paid employment, I worked hard to stay fit by seeking out footballers, handballers etc to train with every now and then.

By the time my work as a corporate manager made it more difficult, I began focusing on doing regular exercises indoors – usually every morning before going out. I can tell you in all sincerity, that whenever I failed to exercise, my mental alertness tended to really drop. I always felt physically heavy, and if I allowed too many days to pass without exercising, I would even begin to feel ill.

Failing to take care of yourself will take its toll on you – physically, and eventually psychologically

I’ve experienced this personally.

During my first few months of running my business, I was so consumed by the desire to get things going that I often neglected to eat or rest properly. I would leave home without eating; work all day, often returning at nine to ten o’clock at night, only to eat sparing and get on the PC to create new stuff for the next day.

Well, soon enough, people began to tell me I was losing weight! (first my wife, then outsiders, acquaintances etc).

Another thing was that my lack of rest gradually took its toll on me so that I became less effective in the tasks I was doing – slower too. As that happened, I got progressively frustrated and irritable, my memory became dulled, as did my reflexes – such that on a particular day I accidentally hit another car while driving, in circumstances that made it obvious my concentration was off. Luckily the other car was not damaged, but I got an earful from the owner!

Here’s why this above point matters so much to your ability to succeed: Others you meet (e.g. prospects) could easily draw conclusions from your uninspiring appearance and disposition, that could spell doom for your aspirations (of winning them over).

A prospective client for instance, would most likely feel uncomfortable if you approach him/her – looking pale, distracted, and irritable. S/he may not say it, but would most likely “think” it.

As you can imagine, not many people would readily write out a cheque to a service provider, who makes them feel that way! The fear would be that such a person would not deliver, or that s/he could divert the money to meet whatever need s/he had, instead of doing the job you paid him/her.

Such fears may be unfounded in your case, but if you let yourself go so badly that your appearance evokes such sentiments in the minds of your prospects, you will have a hard time convincing anyone to do business with you.

So, I say this from personal experience: Don’t make the mistake of failing to take good care of your “entire” self!

Use Your Custom Web Marketing System Correctly (Hint: What NOT to Do If You Want to Attract Profitable Buyers)

To attract profitable buyers with a Web Marketing System(WMS), you have to define and differentiate yourself.

In other words, you must create content that is original, and unique – one that cannot be found anywhere else. Doing anything different, will amount to effectively killing the WMS created for you. It just won’t work as it is designed…which means you will NOT get the full spectrum of benefits promised.

That’s why in developing and implementing my customizable Web Marketing System (WMS) for myself and my clients, the number ONE thing I watch out for, is the integrity of the content used.

The articles I create for myself and my clients epitomize the above. Nobody will find anything them anywhere else on the web, except on the specific website they were prepared for.

I have seen business owners who public articles on their blog that are not original to them. In many cases, they are exact duplicates of what the original author has on his own blog. To their credit, they leave the name of the author at the end of each piece.

The truth however is that if you’re using a WMS like the kind I develop and implement, you cannot afford to do that!

You simply cannot take somebody else’s contents and put on your blog, especially when there is no indication on that person’s website that s/he has permitted for that to be done.

Now, don’t get me wrong. It’s not that I’m saying you cannot republish other people’s write-ups. You can – but there’s an accepted, ethical way to go about it.

For instance, if you go to a website like www.ezinearticles.com, there are write-ups by various expert authors there (mine are there too – click).

Website owners and publishers online come to that website, and browse through to select articles of their choice for republishing on their own websites.

It’s called content syndication – and every publisher who picks up my article from Ezinearticles.com for example, is required to retain my by-line at the bottom, in exchange for access to my content.

So, yes, you could do that i.e. get content to republish from an approved source like the above mentioned articles directory.

But you cannot do that with unique content from the website of an expert author, who has NOT submitted his content to a syndication platform like Ezinearticles.com.

Except he explicitly states otherwise on his personal website, you simply cannot go there and pick up his/her content and use on your own website.

Having said that, even if s/he did add an invitation under each article on his/her blog, for you – as a reader – to republish it on yours, my point is you cannot hope to achieve the degree of web marketing success possible, with my kind of WMS, by reproducing other people’s content.

It will not work.

You see, the WMS is designed to enable you establish yourself as an authority in your field. When that happens, the authority status you develop will make people decide (and prefer) to buy whatever you offer, from YOU, even if they are aware they can get it elsewhere.

Reproducing another expert’s articles on your blog, instead of writing your original pieces, will effectively deny you the opportunity to establish yourself as an authority.

And if you cannot establish yourself as an authority, you will not be able to sell using a WMS.

Some of the above mentioned business owners who reproduced other people’s articles on their blogs, inserted articles, images and links for their products within, and at the end of the articles.

They focused only on inviting people to buy, with clickable links your sales pages. But the content itself was not created by them. When using a WMS, this will yield poor results.

If you want to succeed with web marketing, for the long term, you cannot copy and paste other people’s writing on your blog/website.

Doing so doesn’t command respect from the people you are hoping to attract. You will not command the buying attention of serious minded followers.

In other words, if you continue that way, you’ll be shooting yourself in the foot.

A better way: You can quote another expert whose idea you like… maybe a line or two.

Refer to him/her via a link to the article, for readers to learn more: don’t copy and paste it all!

Having said the above, I can tell you, based on YEARS of success from using my own custom WMS, that it’s much more important to express YOUR OWN views/ideas

You have to do your own writing. Think up your own original thoughts. And voice out your own perspective on issues relating to what you’re selling.

You have stories of your own, about the experiences you’ve had doing the business you’re engaged in.

You need to write them out and share them with your audience. You can also create audios, videos, info graphics, mind maps versions of your ideas and publish via relevant channels.

That is the way to use a WMS – IF you want authentic, long lasting web marketing success!

1 of 2: PUBLIC SPEAKING – Acknowledge Even the Smallest Person That Helped You Succeed

In this issue, I explain why your success means nothing, if you fail to acknowledge those who helped you on your way up.

This is a pet peeve of mine.

Some people seem to believe there’s nothing wrong with using and dumping others. Funny enough majority in today’s society rarely call those they see doing it to question, or order, even when they see the signs to justify doing so.

I do NOT like it one bit.

I’m a believer in giving credit to whom it’s due – no matter what!

Whether the person is big or small, white or red, tall or short, male or female, rich or poor. Whatever s/he may be, as long as s/he was able to add useful value to ME, towards helping me get what I wanted, I WILL always tell as many others as possible about it.

Now, others may feel I’m over doing it, but I believe the best way to encourage more people to exhibit a particular kind of behaviour, is to reward it wherever and whenever it is seen.

The above mentioned is a simple rule for influencing people, and it’s been used for ages by successful people, to gain a competitive edge.

Sadly, we too often forget to apply it when it matters most, in our personal relationships. This is why we have so much distrust, mistrust, bitterness, resentment around us today.

People who have been used and dumped severally, get to the point that they start second guessing others, and stop being as willing to help as they used to.

Those who have seen good people get used and dumped also take a cue and become wary of being too willing to help others, for fear or getting exploited too.

The result is that fewer people get the help they sometimes badly need to achieve success that could end up helping MAJORITY of people in society.

You’ve probably read the life story of some famous or successful person known in the world today, who revealed that his breakthrough came when someone gave him a helping hand

It could have been a mentor who made a phone call when he was not obligated to, or even a house help who discovered a crucially important contract document that had gone missing, and was needed to close a badly needed deal.

As he saying goes, no one can be an island to him/herself. We use the expression “self-made” but one or two persons probably played roles that helped the person so described to succeed. Without such input from others, tiny it may seem on retrospect, s/he may not have made it!

That’s why successful people who are wise, acknowledge their helpers!

Now, when that person who got helped succeeds, if when asked s/he never mentions the pivotal role played by such individuals, none of his/her admirers will ever know.

That would not be a crime. But it would be an injustice, and a disincentive.

Such a person could see, for instance, the person s/he helped on TV, or the cover of a magazine, or read an interview s/he granted, but hear nothing of the role s/he played.

Instead, s/he could read and hear, for instance, the person s/he helped telling his/her story of rising from grass to grace, as if what transpired between them never happened. Or if s/he admits that it happened, s/he would refer to the person who helped him/her in the third person e.g. somebody helped me out.

It happens in obvious ways like the above described. But it also happens in more subtle ways too…

For instance, when one expert takes another experts original ideas (from the latter’s blog, books, articles, audios, videos etc), and studies them to BUILD material for his/her own work (e.g. private training/coaching of clients).

If in describing how his/her work evolved to its current state, s/he fails to mention the reference he made to the other expert’s works that would be an example of subtle occurrence.

In other words s/he would have presented it to the world as if he had no “help”.

This applies in physical as well as intellectual terms. Imagine a research paper that lists no references of major works consulted.

What I see happening a lot today, especially with the PC and Internet technology, is that those unwilling to acknowledge others, find it easy to do so using the powerful tools we now have.

Yet, giving credit will not take anything away from any achievement you record based on work done by another!

History offers ample proof that this is true.

Here’s one example…

Thomas Edison improved the light bulb. He did NOT invent it. Many people do not know this, but it’s true.

The light bulb was originally invented by another scientist, who used a metal that did not last long before disintegrating. Edison studied that scientists work, and then worked to find a better metal, till he discovered the tungsten filament.

Today, despite the fact that Edison he still enjoys great recognition for the improvement he made to it – because that improvement made it MORE useful to a larger number of people.

And that’s why giving credit to others cannot hurt you, if you come up with IMPROVED concepts, ideas or solutions based on work already done by another.

My argument therefore, is that if we form the habit of giving credit to who it’s due, we will build a society in which people readily give the best of themselves to others – unconditionally.

They will have less cause to fear that their efforts may go unrecognised after they do so.

As an expert-who-speaks, you are a potential thought leader. How you conduct your affairs in this regard can have a major impact on others.

What do you do, when you relate with friends, relatives, kids, co-workers, employees or associates?

If a colleague shares his original idea/concept/solution with you behind closed doors, which opens your eyes to new way for taking your work to the next level…

Acknowledge it. Let him/her know. That will inspire him/her to find more ways to help you.

And if you decide to use what you got from him/her in your work, PLEASE…I BEG OF YOU:

A. Do not fail to ask his/her permission to use it (especially if it’s his/her original creation).

B. And when using it, endeavour to mention/indicate who you got it from, to your audience.

Not every organisation finds it convenient to make exclusive use of conventional off the shelf accounting software.

I discovered that fact through YEARS of serving businesses – in Nigeria -like hotels and hospitals especially, who – because of unique preferences they had for in house reporting – found it difficult to make routine use of commercial apps used for accounting.

Some had staff turnover problems, so that using the often expensive conventional off-the-shelf app (which sometimes have steep learning curves) meant spending money to get a new staff trained to use it, if an existing competent user quit or got fired.

If you’re involved in the business of fish farming, you most likely know that transporting live fish can rarely be done successfully without proper know-how. So many things can go wrong if it’s not done right.

My first experience of the potential hazards associated with live fish was when I apprenticed with Muyiwa Adediran (aka The Fish Man™) on his Belewo Specialized Fish Rearing farm at Abesan Estate in Iyana Ipaja area of Lagos back in 2002.

For about 6 months, I learned by working as a farm hand – often – on weekends, caring for the stocks of catfish and ornamental fish bred on the farm.

Every now and then Muyiwa had to arrange for live fish (both kinds) to be transported to different parts of the country. It was NEVER a process he took lightly, as the dangers of DOA (Dead On Arrival) batches always threatened.

He had told me stories about the days when he exported indigenous ornamental fish (collected from key location) to countries in Europe and Asia, and how he gained valuable experience in preparing and packaging live fish to go on such “journeys”.

Done wrongly, it could mean the end of an exporter’s lucrative investment – and also a loss of confidence on the part of his/her international buyers…

1 of 2: PUBLIC SPEAKING – Resist the Seduction of Mediocrity

In your personal or work life, a willingness to stand out/be different, and to venture outside your comfort zone, will determine how successful you become. My study of the lives of many successful people in different fields, and across various cultures, convince me exceptional achievers do NOT get there by habitually avoiding criticisms, challenges, risks, or mistakes!

The very act of pursuing success requires stretching one’s self BEYOND what one has been used to doing previously.

No matter how many times you may have won or succeeded, you will often have to dig deeper to win at higher levels, if you want to keep improving.

As an expert in your chosen field of interest or specialization, it’s likely you have colleagues who boast superior competencies to yours at what you do.

You most likely consider them “rivals”, against whom you must put up your best efforts, if you expect to be noticed by the mutual target audience you offer solutions to.

In such a case, your success will depend on your ability to set yourself apart from such rivals in a way that makes decision makers PREFER to hire YOU!

Sometimes that could mean packaging, promoting and presenting yourself in as many new and/or unconventional ways as possible, compared to others.

Richard Branson is an excellent model of what is possible in this regard…

He has made a success of getting valuable media exposure for his businesses by being willing to:

A. boldly conceive and fearlessly implement unusual – often contrarian – business ideas to address an unmet consumer need in a pocket friendly manner.

B. creatively employ potentially risky publicity stunts of ALL kinds to attract useful attention to his unconventional ventures.

C. courageously pick himself up anytime his ideas did not work as planned, and use whatever lessons could be had from the experience, to go back and try again – or start a new venture.

When I say the above, I do so based on deep insights I’ve gained from working VERY closely with CEOs face to face, and via the web, within and outside Africa, for well over a decade.

You see, I’ve learnt that many “conventional” business owners are too concerned about how they “look” to take actions that can benefit their businesses like Branson does.

Things are changing, but even today there are many CEOs I know who would NOT go out without being in a suit and tie. And I always wonder about that, given the fact that NONE of them is even half as successful in business as Richard Branson!

For him, going tie-less is more the norm than the exception, and that’s often how he meets with others who tend to come seriously suited up.

Years ago, I resolved to emulate Branson as much as possible in the ways I go about my own business affairs.

That’s why almost NOTHING is sacrosanct in terms of what I feature in the promotional materials I create to get noticed by my target audience.

This is why, for instance, I have publications like my 10 Storyfied Yoruba Proverbs Audio Book, which teaches basic usage of 10 popular Yoruba language proverbs. It is also why my latest book is based on a Christian-religion themed play titled “Defeating the Devil Inside” – despite the fact that I am NOT religious.

The above publications contrast sharply with conventional books in my online store, on self-development, public speaking, parenting, farm business best practice etc.

You don’t have to agree with my approach. For me however, the reach and impact I achieve makes it worthwhile.

Often, whenever I’ve gone the unconventional route in this manner, I’ve noticed a spike in the attention I get from certain quarters. Sometimes that leads to mentions, or inquiries that would otherwise not have come.

And a few have resulted in sales of my more conventional products!

Most important however, is the fact that my adopted strategy enables me remain perpetually unique in terms of how I position myself. The unconventional content creation strategy I use makes it easy for my target audience to identify and talk about me to others.

In other words, I’m hard to mix up with ANYONE else, who provides ANY of the solutions I offer.

Here’s another example: My use of the title “Location Independent Multipreneur” used to cause more than a few eyebrows to be raised when I began using it, after relocating to Benin Republic in 2013.

The result was that people got curious enough to Google for more information about me, and they also closely scrutinized the solutions I “claimed” to offer.

A few went further to “test” me by reaching out via phone/email, and later making “small purchases”, to check (some actually asked me!) if I claimed to be “Location Independent” so as to avoid being tracked down by unsatisfied buyers for instance!

After establishing that I was for real, and could be trusted, they felt safe enough to start talking seriously to others about me. As a result, I find myself getting periodic referrals!

All of the above happens, with payments being sent to me from within and outside Africa by total strangers.

In other words, people who have NEVER met with, or heard about me.

I mean, people who ask me where my office is and get told, by ME, that I have NEVER used an office since 2002!

Those same people feel CONVINCED enough to take the leap of faith to send payment to me, for a product I promise to send them in return!

In other words, my willingness to be BOLDY contrarian is paying off for me.

Way back in 2003, when I first began describing myself as a Multipreneur…it earned me LOTS of criticism.

At a point, I lost count of those who started discussing what I could do for them, but refused to continue when I revealed other solutions I claimed to be able to provide.

Many pointedly told me I was doing “too many things”, and that it meant I was NOT good enough at EACH one, to merit getting hired by them.

It might interest you to know that ALL the solutions I claimed I could competently provide back then, are the EXACT same things I AM doing today i.e. Performance Improvement Speaking Services, Custom Excel-VB Software Development, Freelance Writing, Web Marketing Systems Development etc.

But when I began, no one believed me.

My claims went against conventional wisdom – and some “wise” veterans went out of their way to advise me to choose “one” and drop the others. That all I claimed I could do, was too much for ONE person to do.

I gave serious thought to what they said, but every single time my INTUITION told me to keep doing what I was doing – and to PROVE myself to anyone who gave me even half a chance.

So I kept presenting myself that way. Eventually, some people began to nibble at my bait.

They were willing to look beyond their bias to grudgingly hire me (I think those who chose not to, felt intimidated that I could multitask so productively, when they could not).

Thankfully, on the few occasions I got hired, I did so well (and even went the extra mile), that some even hired me in the other areas I offered solutions! The story remains the same today, as I continue to UP SELL my growing library of other solutions to new clients/buyers.

For instance, last week, I won several new buyers of my Excel-VB Income and Expense Manager. Among them was a Farm CEO who only 2 weeks earlier had purchased a promo offer of my Poultry Farm Manager, Ration Formulator and Feed Formulation Handbook.

Simply put, you cannot keep doing the same thing others are doing, and expect to get different results from theirs.

The title of this piece challenges you to RESIST the SEDUCTION of mediocrity, because in my experience, that’s really what holds most people back.

When you try doing something new, daring, untested, and unproven…or something simply different, that’s likely to attract criticism from others around you.

This is the reason most of us prefer to avoid taking risks in our personal and/or work lives.

Instead we stick to doing what we know – based on pass successes – will work, and refuse to deviate, even though we may SENSE doing so could lead to new discoveries and/or levels of achievement.

When a person gives in to the above described fear based need, s/he will effectively be taking refuge in mediocrity.

Now, what makes it so easy for many to fall into this potentially harmful psychological state is that majority of people in society live the same way. As a result, they may not easily find someone to give them the truthful feedback they need to get out of the rut.

The truth is however that those who become champions at what they do – including the business of public speaking – are people who NEVER give in to the seduction of mediocrity.

They KNOW that there is superior benefit to be had in constantly challenging themselves to do MORE and try HARDER, to achieve greater outcomes.

If you want to live a fulfilling life, let the above thoughts guide your actions. Start resisting the seduction of mediocrity in ANY area of your life from today!
