PII 121: We Need Schooling Systems That Empower Learners to Maximize Their Potentials in Every Possible Way

This is the first of what will be a series I will be publishing on the theme of Best Practice Parenting. with a focus specifically on education as it relates to schooling – and why there is a massive difference between those 2 expressions.

In other words, I’m saying that there is a massive difference between what people refer to as SCHOOLING and what they call EDUCATION..

The primary target audience I have in mind for this message are people in government, who have any role to play in influencing the so called education that is happening in Nigeria, especially, and other places in general.

The main issue I want to address has to do with:

  1. What is being taught in schools and…
  1. Why, I believe, strongly too, that 80% of the time, most conventional schools in Nigeria and other societies are doing more damage to kids than whatever benefits they say they add to them!

You may not agree with me, especially if you are somebody that is benefiting from the system

The naked truth is that it IS a MONEY MAKING system primarily.

In most of the schools where it is used, they do NOT care about the kids enough to ensure they get the learning they need. Money determines most of what is done.

I say this with no apology – it is, like I said before, the TRUTH.

Most of the schooling systems are just designed to make money for the owners and those who are their partners.

This same situation exists in many tutoring centers. And that’s why this latter group is able to put up promotional banners, posters and boards like the one in the photo below, which make outrageous offers:

special-centre-tutor

How do you explain the fact that a tutoring center (see photo above) is able to GUARANTEE that you WILL get passing grades in ALL subjects you take in the examinations, IF you enroll there?

It’s simple. They’ve got it all cooked up to work the way they want i.e. they have paid their way to ensure it happens.

No Nigerian capable of conscious thought can claim NOT to be aware of the fact that virtually everything has a price in Nigeria. And that in our educational sector, SPECIAL CENTRES abound which offer willing parents and their wards any flexibility they want, to cheat their way to success in exams.

The schools do their own “bragging” about guaranteed exams results success a bit less openly. But the same arrangement exists.

The policy makers and government agencies/operatives who are supposed to monitor and engage in the implementation of the so called educational policies for the most part are just people who are only there for the ride.

They are not actively involved in doing any quality control. My mother was an educator for about 30 years in Nigeria – and worked as a teacher in leading schools for many years till she retired. During this time she taught hundreds of kids, including us, her children. When we came back from school, you would have exercises to do e.g. Lacombe’s in Math etc.

She invested hundreds of hours into teaching ALL her pupils with passion, every day she had the opportunity to interact with them. She told us teaching was her passion  and it was obvious from the way she taught us. That was why it was no surprise that she went on to earn Montessori level certification to boost her work related competence. She wanted to be the best she could be FOR her pupils.

To say that we turned out right academically is stating the obvious – but what many may miss is the fact that THAT did not happen through Osmosis.

That was an example that I saw in my own life a child of what a parent who understands his/her own role as the first teacher in the life of her children was supposed to be.

But you DO NOT have to be a trained teacher to be the first and most important teacher in the life of your child.

You see, this is because your job is not to become an out-and-out teacher.

Instead your role is to guide the process of learning that your child in being exposed to, by interacting with whatever organization, individual or entity that is providing learning to your child.

Before you can regard SCHOOLING as delivering the right EDUCATION (or being the same) we need that activity to take place on regular and reliable basis, where the required QUALITY CONTROL intervention is happening, and is not in doubt in terms of its effectiveness.

My mother told us about INSPECTORS OF EDUCATION

They used to go from school to school and would quietly sit at the back of the class (or stand outside the window), monitoring a teacher in action.

They would then rate the teacher and communicate their findings to him/her in form of feedback designed to aid performance improvement.

That was the kind of arrangement that existed when my mother was learning as a student in the Teachers Training College back then!

Of course such things no longer exist today, in schools, for the most part.

I recall discussing this issue with a Head Teacher in one of Nigeria Public Primary Schools, She explained to me that education inspectors still go round, but they are not in enough numbers to cover all the schools.

But that did not impress me much since it is likely that corrupt advances are likely to be made to those inspectors to influence whatever ratings they award to the teachers – and their schools.

If that was not the case, the terrible fall in standards of teachers as well as pupils/students produced from our schools would NOT have happened

As a result what we have are schools all over the country that simply do NOT meet the basic standards of what should be a school.

So they are just there – physical buildings people wear uniforms to, in order to meet human beings who call themselves teachers but often do not think/act like they are.

Little wonder then that the EDUCATION that should happen is not happening in most of these schools.

However, because learners are wearing school uniforms and carrying textbooks in backpacks, we assume they are getting an education.

Sadly, the reality is that our children are being taken through a process that is actually more damaging, because what they are going through are a lot of activities that don’t add much value to them. Activities that expose them to mind-numbing experiences.

Those children consequently finish from such schooling systems but do not even come out with functional education of any sort.

This is the reality that faces us today.

It is why we have all these products coming out from our institutions, which are being repeatedly described as unemployable by potential employers.

It’s not that the employers hate them.

It’s because they are coming out into society, after finishing their schooling, without ANY relevant abilities, that will solve the potential employer’s problems or meet his/her pressing needs.

No employer is going to “dash” you money for finishing from school.

They want to see that you are going to be useful to them.

No sane business owner, for instance, is going to be paying you money for doing nothing while on his/her payroll!

So the question is:

Do the schools that society is providing, and which the state is telling citizens to send their kids to -(in line with so called law that :”Every child must go to school”) get checked to be sure that those schools will deliver to society, products that will meet the needs of society, and solve its problems?

The truth of the matter is that the answer is NO.

Our people in government are NOT doing that.

Let me make something clear: I’m NOT telling anyone in responsible positions in government that they do not know their jobs.

Instead what I’m doing is to draw your attention to the fact that there is something that you’re missing.

You’re free to decide whether or not to take the points I make seriously, – or discard them.

I will however say this:

The fact that you work in government today does not mean that you will be immune from the negative impact of your actions and/or inactions in the education sector, such as those I’ve continually highlighted in my write-ups.

You see, when you’re giving people inadequate education, they will go and function in society in an inadequate manner.

Now, when you retire or even when your own kids go into society – WITH SUPERIOR COMPETENCE – they’re going to meet those other kids, who will be ready to break any rules and cut any corners to get ahead of your child, who is more competent, – because they will see him/her as a threat immediately, because he has one thing they don’t have.

So what’s the solution?

You simply need to do the right thing: Give children the ability/skills when they are in school, so that when they step out of school, they will instantly be seen by society as useful.

I’ll give you an example:

If your school develops a reputation for producing young people that have the ability to excel at international levels in competitive sports, and therefore becomes a destination for scouts looking for, say, good footballer. Assume your school has a wonderful sports programme.

So the kids are learning all the academics, but the school also has a system that allows them to also get really good at soccer.

My school (C and S College, Ilorin, in Kwara state) had that. We produced many people who were very good at competitive sports – and some of them (like Olapade Adeniken) even went on to represent Nigeria at the Olympics.

That kind of schooling system makes career options quite variable – giving children the opportunity to look at some many possibilities they can explore.

I was there when Olapade Adeniken ran his first race in the 100 meters leaving everybody behind in the dust. The state coaches wasted no time in recruiting him – and his career took off from there.

That kind of thing – a system that allows people to maximize their potentials – is what gets the best results for learners to enter the real world.

You don’t limit them!

That’s the problem we have today. Most of the conventional schools are not interested in the full dimensions of the abilities of the kids.

They just focus on one thing: book learning…

AND the FAULT rests directly with the people in government.

This is because nobody is checking what the schools are doing – so the schools have turned it into a business.

All they do now is to increase the number of subjects, so as to justify raising tutoring fees.

How can kids be studying 14 to 21 subjects at primary/secondary school levels?

When I was schooling at that level, we only had to take about 7 to 9 subjects. In fact, I took 5 subjects I really wanted to gain credits in. But I added 2 extra to make it up to 7.

It goes without saying that studying for those subjects was not easy. So one can only imagine how challenging it must be for today’s kids who have to study double the number of subjects!

The only reason that unhealthy learning situation exists in our schooling system is that the QUALITY CONTROL checks that should be done are NOT happening.

I argue that smart parents will take action to protect their kids from the damaging impact of exposure to this kind of schooling, by getting involved in giving their kids the right kind of coaching – especially in a way that enables the child discover, develop and maximize his/her full potentials in every area of life – especially in use of their income earning vocational skills and talents.

R0cky tells him why it is important to keep MOVING FORWARD no matter how hard life hits you, and why blaming others for the knocks you get from life should NEVER be something you do, except you want to be a coward – and in the long run, a failure!

I strongly recommend that every parent read this transcript and watch the video, then use what you learn to challenge yourself to live a better life.

But don’t stop there: Also use what you learn, to COACH YOUR kids, in preparation for life when they arrive adulthood. Believe me, they WILL need it!

Here’s why I think you need to let your kids STUDY the video and this transcript with you:

You see, during hard times, your ability to provide for your loved ones, may become a bit limited and this could lead them to begin DOUBTING you. Depending on how bad things get, your circumstances could make people outside your home talk about you, to the hearing of such loved ones who you provide for, causing them to feel embarrassed. Knowing the truths stated in this video clip can help YOU deal with this phase of your life and also help them keep believing in you – and even in themselves!

Click here to download the clip I typed this text transcript from…

Son (walking alongside Rocky): So you nervous about the fight?

Rocky: Scared to death

Son: You don’t look scared

Rocky: Well you ain’t supposed to

Son: Then you don’t have to do it

Rocky: Yeah, well I think I do

Son (stops walking, so Rocky turns around): You know living with you, it hasn’t been easy. People see me, but they think of you, Now with all this going on, it’s going to be worse than ever.

Rocky: It don’t have to be

Son: Oh, sure it does

Rocky: Why? You got a lot going on, kid

Son: What? My last name? That’s the reason I got a decent job. That’s the reason why people deal with me in the first place. Now I start to get a little ahead. I start to get a little something for myself and this happens. Now I’m asking you as a favour, not to go through with this okay. This is only gonna end up bad for you and it’s gonna end up bad for me.

Rocky: You think I’m hurting you?

Son: Yeah – in a way you are

Rocky: That’s the last thing I ever wanted to do.

Son: I know that’s not what you wanna do, but that’s just the way that it is. Don’t you care what people think?

Doesn’t it bother you that people are making you out to be a joke, and I’m gonna be included in that?

Do you think that’s right?

Do you?

Rocky: You ain’t gonna believe this, but you used to fit right here [points to palm of his right hand]

I’d hold you up and say to your mother “This kid’s gonna be the best kid in the world. This kid’s gonna be somebody better than anybody ever knew.

And you grew up good and wonderful. It was great just watching. Every day was like a privilege.

Then the time come for you to take on the world and be your own man, and you did.

But somewhere along the line, you changed. You stopped being you.

You let people stick a finger in your face and tell you you’re no good.

And when things got hard, you started looking for something to blame. Like a big shadow.

Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows.

It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it.

You, me or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving’ forward.

How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!

Now if you know what you’re worth, then go out and get what you’re worth. But you gotta be willing to take hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you wanna be because of him or her or anybody!

Cowards do that, and that ain’t you!

You’re better than that!

[PAUSE[

I’m always gonna love you no matter what.

No matter what happens. You’re my son and you’re my blood.

You’re the best thing in my life.

But until you start believing in yourself, you ain’t gonna have a life.

Many people who encounter hard times sometimes wonder why things have to be so difficult. Some get to a point where they even question “God”.

Others decide they cannot take it anymore and settle for cutting corners to make ends meet.

Now, cutting corners to succeed is NEVER right and ultimately hurts more than it helps, in most cases.

But at least those who do it are ACCEPTING responsibility for where they are, and taking ACTION to go where they want to be!

This is more than can be said for those who choose to blame others for hardships they encounter.

They go through those experiences without making effort to LEARN and IMPROVE themselves so as to make PROGRESS towards a better life.

As a result, their circumstances worsen – and they complain, and point fingers at others to blame even more, thereby remaining in that sad cycle of repeated failures!

You do NOT want THAT to be YOUR story.

I recommend you take Rocky’s admonition to heart and begin to think and act accordingly, from today onwards.

Sooner than later, the success you seek, will be come your reality.

Good luck!

PII 119: Shine Your Light: Succeed Without Apology [Verbatim Video Transcript of “Shine Your Light” – Powerful Speech by World-Renowned Motivational Speaker and Bestselling Author, Lisa Nichols]

In this week’s issue (28th May 2018) of my newsletter, I share the verbatim transcript I’ve typed from a 3.5 minute video clip of World-renowned motivational speaker and bestselling author, Lisa Nichols delivering her powerful speech on how to keep shining and blinding those who cannot handle your light.

Notice that I’ve DELIBERATELY retitled it “Shine Your Light: Succeed Without Apology”

Reason: To better drive home the message from her speech.

This is a message so MANY adults need to hear today.

I meet too many as I move around, who have been sooooo psychologically battered by society to believe they need to act “humble” and not “show so much of what they can do”.

This makes them go through life UNDER-ACHIEVING.

Very wrong.

The Creator is NEVER pleased with that kind of lifestyle, because it does NOT glorify Him!!!

I’ve explained why this is so, in past articles on this blog – including a popular one (click here to read it in a new window) about how Muhammad Ali achieve legendary status while alive by shining his light brightly and blowing his trumpet loudly!

=Start of Transcript=

“It’s a life of hustle and survival.

I remember when my 9th grade teacher asked me:

‘Lisa what do you want to be when you grow up?’
You see I had to fight the Harlem Crip 30’s every day to get home from school, so I looked at her and said “Alive.”

I took an English class, and I got a FAIL in English.

And my English teacher said, in front of the entire class:

‘Lisa, you have to be the weakest writer I have ever met in my entire life.’

Don’t worry, my story ends good.

Don’t feel sorry for me.

I got seven under my belt.

And then the same year, my speech teacher said – after giving me a “D minus’

I knew I had an A in speech, like, come on…

He obviously didn’t agree with me. He gave me a D minus and said:

‘Ms. Nichols, I recommend that you never speak in public. That you get a desk job.

So here’s the beauty of that story:

Other people’s perception of you, ain’t none of your business.

Everything you’ve ever been through, set through, rose through, cried through, prayed through…everything is a setup for your next best season.

In the way you forgive the perceivably unforgivable; the way you love the perceivably unlovable; the way you accept what seems to be unacceptable; the way you embrace after you’ve been betrayed; the way you do that, is the way you will lead us.

Your light belongs to everyone who’ll be illuminated because you were bold enough and obedient enough to let your light shine.

Yes, Yes. Yes, Yes.

And every time you cross someone’s path and they can’t handle your light…

You know those people. They try to give you reasons why you should tone it down a bit…

That they will tell Sheryl not to sing so loud.

Right, right, right.

They would tell me to shut up in class.

They tell you, ‘You kind of strange’

You know those people.

Dream snatchers. Vision busters.

Don’t be mad at them. They can only love you to the capacity to which they are able to love themselves.

Don’t be mad at them.

Don’t be mad at them.

Pray for them. Love them.

Because they’re dealing with themselves, like we’re dealing with us.

But, I want you to remember that your 70 watts…your 70 watts had to be turned way up.

Because you got way more to give us.

It ain’t over yet.

Don’t put a period, where God put a comma.

And when you turn it up to 159 watts, you know you keep turning it up.

You like you stop dimming your light. You say ‘Today is the first day of the rest of my life’ and you turn it up…

You’re going to find people that can’t handle your light.

And before today you might have dimmed your life. You might have shrunk a little bit.

You might have tempered it down a little bit.

But after today, I want you to see this.

After today, turn the lights up.

After today you don’t dare dim your light.

As your light gets brighter…As your light gets brighter…you’re going to disrupt some people, and they’re going to tell you:

‘Your light’s too bright.’

‘Your light’s too bright.’

‘Your light’s too bright.’

Then you just look at them and say:

‘Well I’m not dimming my light.’

‘I’m just going to hand you some (sun) shades.’

I’m just saying…

Why don’t you start carrying around an extra pair of shades!

Stop Being Shy About Manifesting Your God-Given Potential.

Lisa’s message simply put is that…

The world needs you to be yourself – YOUR FULL unadulterated self. You have so much to TEACH others, based on your God-given Genius and Talents.

And like someone once said: You do NOT need anyone’s permission to succeed.

If you’re still in doubt, here’s a famous quote that communicates the same truths:

“You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure about you. We were born to manifest the glory of God that is within us.” Marianne Williamson

[IMPORTANT NOTE:====

On 4th May 2014, Tayo’s 9 year old domain (Spontaneousdevelopment dot com), which hosted his website, was taken over by Aplus.net.

Within a few days however, Tayo used his advanced self-taught web development skills to build a SUPERIOR “reincarnation” of it the website http://www.tayosolagbade.com.

But updates are still ongoing to URLs bearing the old domain name in most of the over 1,000 web pages, and blog posts he’s published.

If you experience any difficulties finding a page or document, email Tayo at tksola dot com.

Click “Tayo, What Happened to SpontaneousDevelopmentDotCom ?” to read a detailed narrative about how the above event occurred :-))

Here’s an article Tayo wrote, to inspire others to defy adversity, and bounce back to even greater reckoning at what they do EVERY time:

Succeed by Emerging from Adversity Like a Phoenix

(TayoSolagbade.com launches extra Hosting plan with FREE Web Marketing!)

And he wrote the one below, to explain why losing a domain name, no matter how old, NO LONGER determines your online success or otherwise:

Haters Cannot Change Your Destiny!

This post was first published (along with THIS one) on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 – on the temporary blogspot dot com channel (click to see) I setup in May 2014, after spontaneousdevelopmen dot .com, my 9 year old domain got taken over by a former hosting company.

====

Haters Cannot Change Your Destiny!

A great man once said:

“Destiny is not a matter of chance, but of choice. Not something to be wished for but to be attained.”

Shina Peters also once sang in his native Yoruba:

“Aye o le pa kadara da. Won kan le fa owo ago pada si eyin ni.”

Contextual Translation: “Haters cannot change a person’s destiny. They can only turn the hands of the clock back i.e slow him/her down.”

This afternoon, I had a chat session with my current web hosts about the issues with my primary domain now locked off by my former host, Aplus.net

From the feedback Hostgator have given me, it’s obvious there’s lots of work I have to do, to modify my hosting account and entire website content to work with a different domain name I have control over.

I’m now awaiting a quote from them, for the configuration that may be needed.

I am also still pursuing a response from Aplus.net to my request that they supply at least the name on the credit card they claim the charge back happened on.

But even if I get the domain freed, I will still carry out my plan to NOT use spontaneousdevelopment.com as my primary domain anymore, until it’s no longer with Aplus.net.

These unexpected developments, and the new plans I just began implementing now make it apparent to me that it’s unlikely I’ll be able to find the time, and resources, to really do what is needed to honour an invitation I got (along with a professional colleague) to attend an event for public speakers in the USA in June 2014.

I’d intended my new marketing plan targeting Farm CEOs with speaking and coaching solution to serve as the “driver” towards achieving that goal.

But the current realities now make it obvious that my prorities need to change.

And so tonight I begin a long overdue process of re-inventing my massive library of web content, based on my personal brand. Www.tayosolagbade.com got renewed using my reseller account for a second year today at $9.99 US dollars.

If the GT Bank Naira Mastercard I used had been accepted by the payment processing system at Aplus.net, I would easily have renewed spontaneousdevelopment.com by myself. Instead I have to depend on friends or relatives based abroad to use their cards on my behalf to pay Aplus, and hostgator. Very awkward and sometimes humiliating.

If I’d been able to pay with my own card, this ridiculous excuse they’ve used to lock down my primary domain may not have worked.

But then again, I’ve been conflicted for months about how to make tayosolagbade.com lead people to my content online via search engines.

Spontaneousdevelopment.com at over 8 years old had always looked too big to replace.

And yet I knew my goal of using speaking and coaching to promote my offers in my travels, would benefit much more from use of tayosolagbade.com.

As luck would have it, those aiming to hurt me have inadvertently helped me. Now I’m taking the excuse of this situation, to carryout the long overdue re-purposing of the web content I’ve been creating since 2005.

I’m going to really enjoy using this as an object lesson to the haters who foolishly keep thinking they can stop me.

Shina Peters’ words of wisdom reproduced above, accurately captures my message here.

Let me quote him again:

“Aye o le pa kadara da. Won kan le fa owo ago pada si eyin ni.”

Translation:

“Haters cannot change a person’s destiny. They can only turn the hands of the clock back i.e slow him/her down.”

From tomorrow I launch a temporary alternative platform to publish my new DAILY content, while I work on the changes to my site. I estimate it might take most of this month of May 2014 to finish.

There’s lots to be done, but I intend to continue my online publishing as normal.

So here we go!
UPDATE (11th May 2018): You are reading THIS post 4 years AFTER I published it on my Blogspot channel – here on my TayoSolagbade.com SD Nuggets blog that I’ve built since then. In other words, I succeeded in defeating that wind of adversity that came my way – and I’ve done even more!

PII 115: To Kill Unemployment, Treat People With Vocational Skills With EQUAL Respect (and Remuneration) as Those With University Degrees! [True Story – Remi, a Lagos Based Entrepreneur, Shows Sapele Youths How to Make Ankara Bags and Shoes]

Remi, this young custom Ankara shoe and bag making entrepreneur who trained youths on day 3 of the B.H.F Youth Conference in Delta State’s Sapele (see photos below), is a model of what is possible. So many of our young people can be gainfully self-employed like Remi is, IF they would only embrace vocational skills acquisition.

Rather than repeat myself all over again, in yet another “preachy” article, I feature below, previews and links to 2 news reports that illustrate VIVIDLY the fact that even those coming back home with “hot” university degrees obtained from foreign universities are NOT getting the jobs they thought they could get.

On day 3 of the 3 day Youth Conference on Vocational Skills Acquisition organized by. B.H.F Foundation (recall on day 2 of 3 I conducted my training on How to Make Drinks You Can Sell Using Pineapple Peels), we had a smart young entrepreneur named Remi  teach the over 230 youths how to make Ankara Bags and Shoes.

remi-1

remi-2

remi-3

remi-4

Below: Beginning stages of the process of making Ankara slippers – notice the shoe last (or mould)

My phone battery shut down before this session ended. Luckily we had 2 photographer/video men who captured it all, so DVDs are to be produced.

remi5

remi6

Over a 4 hour period, this highly skilled young man painstakingly demonstrated the process of making what he called a “Box Bag” (see photos below) and also how to make smart slippers – both with beautiful Ankara fabrics.

We had been expecting him to join us since Monday, but he’d had to stay back to ensure the first half of a client order was safely dispatched to its overseas destination.

In other words, this chap actually produces his custom bags, and shoes for both local and export markets.

Further discussion with him revealed that he’s been in the business for about 8 years now.

Dropped out from Secondary School due to lack of funds. Found his way back to school via technical education where he learned the basics of shoe making. He however noted that he learnt the art of Ankara bag and shoe making by studying YouTube Videos -adding that ANYONE can do what he does today, if s/he is willing to invest the time and effort required to learn the same way – at more or less zero cost.

I have shared the above to underscore a point I’ve been making for YEARS that education needs to be functional.

This young man is not only gainfully self-employed, but he also offers a few people income earning opportunities to work with him.

On top of that, he offers training and coaching for interested persons to learn how to do what he does.

Many of our so called graduates carrying B.Sc and M.Sc degree certificates from local and foreign universities around looking for increasingly hard to find jobs fail to realize they can do much more for themselves by exploring entrepreneurship – especially via acquisition and use of income earning vocational skills that are IN DEMAND in their societies!

Rather than repeat myself all over again, in yet another “preachy” article, I feature below, previews and links to 2 news reports that illustrate VIVIDLY the fact that even those coming back home with “hot” university degrees obtained from foreign universities are NOT getting the jobs they thought they could get.

And they are certainly NOT getting the kinds of salaries they thought their expensively acquired degrees would command. Indeed, as the Sunday Punch report below shows, many are finding themselves being passed over for graduates from local private universities!

It’s so bad that many of them, in spite of the many millions they spent getting their degrees from abroad, have today put them aside and embraced self-employment via vocations like custom shoe making – and as the case of Agu proves, despite being initially mocked by colleagues, they are actually doing quite well.

The above reality – and the fact that many others who continue to venture abroad to study, face increasingly tough conditions to pay their fees and living expenses, resulting in serious and humiliating hardships, PROVE that pursuing paper qualifications NO LONGER works like it used to.

Read: I Am Now Depending On Friends For Food And Shelter – Nigerian Man Studying Abroad

Today’s society rewards people with skills more readily than it does those without them. At the least, you want to arrive in the market place with both academic competence AND market relevant skills.

Dashed hopes: Returnee graduates struggle as employers snub foreign degrees

returmee-graduates

This much was said by the graduates interviewed in the reports I feature above, as well as the HR consultants whose opinions were sought by the reporter.

The truth is that our conventional schooling system – the one that emphasizes near exclusive book learning – no longer works and needs to be totally overhauled.

The smart parent – and student – would do well to make the needed changes in what s/he chooses to learn NOW, rather than wait for the school teachers, lecturers, administrators or policy makers to do what needs to be done.

That’s what I’m doing for my kids and it is why I’m offering any interested parents, teachers or policy makers FREE download access to the PDF pre-publication edition of my paper titled “Schooling is a Means to an End and NOT an End In Itself”.

My PDF report features links to a video that compares Job Training in the USA with that done in Germany – and it points out a GLARING shortcoming of what is done in the USA and explains why Germany’s approach enables it boast one of the lowest youth unemployment rates in the world.

I believe Nigeria can LEARN a lot from that video -and that we can drastically cut down unemployment in our country if we adopt a similar model to Germany’s in which people with vocational skills get treated with EQUAL respect (and remuneration) as those with college or university degrees!

Remi, this young custom Ankara shoe and bag making entrepreneur who trained youths on day 3 of the Youth Conference in Sapele, is a model of what is possible. So many of our young people can be gainfully self-employed like Remi is, IF they would only embrace vocational skills acquisition.

I explain with elaborate examples and illustrations, including true stories about my personal experiences and those of others, in my PDF report. Click here to learn more.

Following several face to face meetings as well as phone and email exchanges over the past few weeks, the CEO of BHF Foundation – a Lagos based NGO engaged in vocational skills training across learning institutions (up to tertiary level) in Nigeria has formally sent in an invitation letter (see below)  indicating his desire to have my Pineapple PEELS drinks making training for an estimated number of housewives, undergraduates and youths.

bhf-letter-blur

His NGO is organizing an approved 3 day youth conference outside Lagos. Our training comes up on the final day (Sat. 14th Apr 2018).

There will also be a Shoe and Bag Making Training by another expert whose work I’ve seen.  Venue is a town in Ogun state. Full details with photos WILL come after the event.

The CEO learnt of my one day workshop on drinks making using Pineapple Peels, from a partner of www.discovercotonou.com (my new travel product/service website brand) and got interested.

I have since told the CEO, who is also a Pastor, that my 2 daughters (aged 12 and 9 years old) will be the lead –facilitators on that day. as they have been doing it for YEARS (I will mainly provide support as they progress). The purpose of running the event in this manner is:

  1. To challenge the adults who will be attending the event to BELIEVE they can do it, when they see my girls doing it.
  2. To give the girls an opportunity to develop their sales/marketing presentation skills as part of the Vocational Skills training based education they’ve been undergoing. You can see photos of home based baking of bread, pizza, cake, chin-chin etc that they do at home using their trademark charcoal stove and pot on their Facebook page at facebook.com/TemiandOluomasCharcoalStoveBaking/

INVITE US TO  CONDUCT ANY OF OUR HOME BASED DRINKS AND FOODS MAKING TRAINING SESSIONS

My girls make their drinks and bake their confectionaries using their charcoal stove technique  – we use that approach to PROVE that lack of capital cannot stop YOU from getting started. However, they also KNOW how to do it all, using gas cookers.

Apart from inviting us to conduct our on demand training for your group, public spirited individuals//organizations can SPONSOR the event, for groups of people we (and/or my partners) may bring together.

About Temi & Olouma…

‘Temi (12) & Oluoma (9) are sisters who (with support from their family) use creative low cost recipes & a charcoal stove pot to bake cookies, cakes, bread, chin-chin, Pizza etc for sale.

This micro business venture began as a “skills acquisition project” Temi asked their Dad to let her do, after seeing videos of homemade cookies baking. The girls learnt to make the cookies by watching YouTube videos by hobbyists/experts in the USA and Nigeria.

[RECOMMENDED] Do You Know How To Deal With People Who Mock And Ridicule You? (Syndicated Version)

I wrote this article over a decade ago, less than 5 years after I quit my job to become self-employed. It was a period when I was experiencing a lot of repeat rejection from potential clients, especially as I tried to find buyers for my Excel-Visual Basic Automation solutions.

Many people simply ignored me (or my letters/flyers) while some walked me out of their offices.

But some went out of their way, to mock and ridicule me in ways that remain so painful for me to remember even now.

I will however add that what they was what I ended up using to inspire myself to succeed in creating a lucrative niche market for my Excel Heaven Visual Basic Automation products and services – which have since been purchased by clients within and outside Africa.

Read this article (which has been widely syndicated online – see examples here) to learn the exact ideas I used to enable myself to succeed inspite of ANY mockery and ridicule directed at me. Apply them as recommended and you WILL become UNSTOPPABLE, like I am!

TRUE STORY: An Invitation from The Ministry of Youth and Social Development to Discuss My Paper Titled “Schooling Is a Means to an End and NOT an End In Itself”

Two 2 days ago (on Wednesday 14th March 2018) I got a call from the Ministry of Youth and Social Development.

The lady asked “Is this Mr. Tayo Solagbade?”.

I replied that it was.

She then went on to say they had received and read a cover letter and the 62 page version of my Work-In-Progress version of my Best Practice Parenting Report titled “Schooling Is a Means to an End and NOT an End In Itself”, which I’d submitted in printed form to the offices of the Honorable Commissioner as well as that of the Permanent Secretary.

She asked “When can we meet with you?”

I replied “Anytime at all you prefer will be acceptable to me.”

With that we agreed that I would come in to her office at 2.30p.m the next day (yesterday) and she hung up.

Below: Photo of my copies of the 2 letters beside a printed version of the 62 page report

letter-paper-ministry-shot

I got to her office about 15 minutes ahead of time yesterday p.m

And I recall having to get past a gatekeeper who initially told me she was out, until I mentioned my name and insisted I was given an appointment by her for 2.30p.m. Then he went “inside” and I overheard her exclaim “Aaaah….”. Next thing I knew, he came back smiling and motioned for me to take a seat.

About 10 minutes later, she came out of her office and we greeted briefly as she went out. Not long after, another lady popped her head into the office and asked if I was the person waiting to see the “Director”. I looked at the gatekeeper for guidance, and saw that he was nodding that I was.

I got up and walked towards her. She said “So you’re the one who wrote that paper – with a look of surprise in her eyes”. I replied that I had written a paper that I’d sent in to the ministry, but wondered why I was to see the director and not the lady in whose office we were.

That was when she explained that THAT lady had other assignments to attend and would be represented by her at a meeting that had been arranged for me to have with the Director.

When they Director’s name was mentioned, I smiled inwardly, because she was someone I’d met before and had extensive discussions with on the theme of the paper I’d now published.

For me, it was therefore fitting that I was to meet with her again. The first time we’d met in 2015. Back then I’d explained what led to my decision to start homeschooling my kids, via a Vocational Skills Acquisition based strategy, as I searched for an academic institution that would enable them continue doing so, along with their academic studies.

[NB: Full details are provided in my 62 page report, which anyone can request by sending me a message via my Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/tayo.solagbade]

The meeting soon got started and she explained that the “PS” (Permanent Secretary)  had sent her my paper, with the cover letter with notes that she was to invite me for a meeting to discuss the ideas I’d described in my paper.

To start off, she acknowledged the points I’d made in my report about the inadequacy of the current schooling system, and noted that what I had done, by CHECKING what the schools were DOING and taking action to develop an alternative that worked was the way to go.

The following were some of the questions I was asked (as her PA and the Deputy Director on either side of me) took notes while I spoke.

  1. Do you want to government to collaborate with you on this project?
  1. Are you proposing a change in the educational curriculum used by schools in the state? If YES, you will need to contact the Ministry of Education, as we at Youth and Social Development cannot take decisions binding on them(She added that work was already ongoing to review it, but that more could be done as per the issues I’d raised in my report)
  1. We have a parenting support network and we’re thinking of adopting your report’s ideas for use in that area. Can we invite you to give an experience-sharing talk to parents we work with?

Among other things, she noted that I could take what I was doing to the next level, by doing a summary or abstract to the Deputy Governor for higher level support.

The truth is that most of the questions they asked and the comments they made were consistent with my purpose for writing my paper in the first place. I wanted to ROCK THE BOAT of the Nigerian Educational System as currently run.

Not for any selfish attention getting motive, but for the sake of MANY parents who I believe may not realize how bad the system is for the kids they gladly push through it. The reaction I’ve seen so far confirms that a desire exists on the part of the policy makers, to do better.

I believe a good number of parents also want something better, for their kids. And if that is so, then the teachers are bound to fall in line and give the other 2 groups what they want: REAL WORLD RELEVANT EDUCATION that works for learners to survive and flourish in life AFTER school!

And that’s why I’ve been GLADLY sending this report to ANY persons who have requested it. Get your copy by sending me a message via my Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/tayo.solagbade]

Note that what I sent to the ministry, and which I offer NOW, to anyone is the 62 page pre-publication edition, so I am still working in more content, and refining it towards final publishing.

However, even as it is now, which is what I sent to the ministry, it offers massively useful volume of information and education for parents, teachers and policy makers willing to study its contents diligently.

Here’s an excerpt from the report:

“My parents told me they worked while in school, to pay their way especially through tertiary education. This cannot be bad, because it forces the learner to develop income earning competence in readiness for his/her entry into the real world. Sometimes that competence could evolve into a successful vocation.

Some big names we know today, like Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Richard Branson – all started engaging actively in business while still students in school – some even from their high school days.

The child that is guided to do this can only end up better off in the long run. I think it’s a shame that we are being told to spoon feed kids right into the completion of their formal schooling.

My experiences and observations/studies clearly show that it is the wrong thing to do. And that is another reason why I have supported my 8 and 11 year old daughters to venture into various income earning vocations like make-up and gele tying, hair styling, baking of a variety of confectioneries in addition to drinks making, PLUS snail rearing on a micro scale.” – Tayo K.
