PII 177: To Succeed, You Need to Fail – Warning to Naughty Pretenders and Inspiration for Authentic Success Seekers

[Important Note] Before you download and listen to THIS audio podcast, linked below, let me state upfront the following clarifiction.

The point I make in this audio podcast about people who “pretend” should NOT be wrongly interpreted to mean I disagree with the “honest” use of the Fake It Till You Make It (FITYMI) strategy that MANY who are successful today have confirmed kept then going till they reached the top. [TIP: Read How to Fake It Till You Make It Without Telling a Single Lie ]

No.

Indeed, quite to the contrary, years ago, I personally embraced the use of that same philosophy myself, and it helped me survive those heartrendingly prolonged periods adversity hat I had to go through to grow my brand.

My message in this podcast is targeted mainly as 2 main groups of people described below:

Group 1: Naughty Pretenders

People pursuing success, but who fail to realize that even when using the FITYMI strategy, it is important to KEEP IT REAL by opening up (or being “Psychologically Naked” in relating) – about their REAL SITUATION to trusted, competent or supportive others (e.g. mentors, coaches, close associates) who can help or support them to GROW from there to achieve authentic success they desire with time.

In other words I refer to those persons who, for instance, choose to fraudulently pretend that they are achieving when they are not making diligent efforts to do so.

These people have no problems LYING about their achievements to look good to everyone!

They habitually create misleading false impressions about what they are doing, and especially when they fail or have setbacks they NEVER or RARELY ever open up to anyone, so as to get help to do a better job of it next time. As a result, they end up living empty lives and quite often, at some point, get found out.

For this group, I offer a WAKE UP CALL of sorts – challenging them to change their ways, so they can achieve success that ENDURES.

Group 2: Authentic Success Seekers

Persons NOT living like those described in Group 1 i.e. who are doing the opposite in their lives – pursuing authentic success with integrity, by being OPEN and HONEST about their REAL SITUATION with their Inner Circle of support (mentors, coaches, associates/partners and loved ones).

For this group, I offer encouragement that they are on the right path, and if they do not stray from it, their success is inevitable.

These 2 groups of people are those my message is meant for.

No one really talks about WHY they have to retire, but it appears to be generally assumed(or expected) that at that age, most people will no longer be able to meet the requirements for doing their jobs satisfactorily.(There is also the other matter, of creating room for “young/fresh blood” to enter.)

What appears not to have been considered in many cases, is whether or not this applies both to jobs requiring mainly physical exertion, and those which only demand mental exertion by the employee. In the former case, the fact that the ageing process leads to weakening of the body muscles, dulled reflexes etc cannot be denied. However, in the latter, what one notices are people assuming that since the body is ageing, then so will the mind (or brain)!.

That is probably why you and I would find it incredible that a 96-year-old man signed a five-year deal with a hotel in Las Vegas, USA instead of ten years because (wait for this!) he wasn’t sure the resort would last ten years”!3 Let’s face it, most “sensible” people would simply laugh at the old man for even thinking he had anything to offer – talk less of having him give the hoteliers a condition because he doubted they could last ten years!!
But then, THAT “old” man knew something others did not – and was certainly convinced about his ideas. What he knew is the reason why I have written this report. By the time you finish reading it, you will be armed with knowledge and good understanding of what ageing and experience ADD to a person that makes him/her MORE potentially useful to others.

You will in effect know what that “old” American man knew, and will (hopefully) use it to negotiate favourably for yourself in your later years. Most importantly, this knowledge will help you AVOID retiring your employees when they could still have more “USE VALUE” to offer, in exchange for the CASH value you give to them. This could be a key factor that determines the long term success or otherwise of your company/business.

How Did The Retirement At 60 Years Rule Come About?

The story about the origin of this retirement age palavar is quite an amusing one. Historical accounts have it that the “tradition” (if we can call it that) came into acceptance for a reason TOTALLY unconnected with age!

PII 169: Before You Quit – Remember Many Said Tiger Woods Was Finished Before He Won the Masters Again (Watch VIDEO of Experts Saying It On TV)

We all know that despite everything that he did wrong, and everything that was done to him, said to him and about him, Tiger Woods NEVER stopped trying to get back to the top,

Each time he went back out and failed or had to withdraw for yet another injury, or other challenge, in his head, he was resolved: he would always return to give it another shot.

However, there are two very important things that I believe most people completely missed, as useful lessons from Tiger Woods’ recent success – which they should pay serious attention to:

The first is something that could have destroyed Tiger Woods himself, had he given in to it.

NB: I clocked 49 last Saturday, 6th of July 2019, and THIS is the message I felt led to share for this week, as I go forward in my journey to achieve more of my dreams. I hope you find the ideas I shared useful in your own journey. Cheers!

PII 169: Before You Quit – Remember Many Said Tiger Woods Was Finished Before He Won the Masters Again (Watch VIDEO of  Experts Saying It On TV)

I LOVE how so many people have hopped on to the amazing unprecedented turnaround Masters Victory recently achieved by Tiger Woods after a heartbreakingly LONG dry spell in his career.

We all know his story. So I will not recount the specifics of how he went crashing from grace to (near) grass in his personal and professional life.

We all know that despite everything that he did wrong, and everything that was done to him, said to him and about him, Tiger Woods NEVER stopped trying to get back to the top,

Each time he went back out and failed or had to withdraw for yet another injury, or other challenge, in his head, he was resolved: he would always return to give it another shot.

However, there are two very important things that I believe most people completely missed, as useful lessons from Tiger Woods’ recent success – which they should pay serious attention to:

The first is something that could have destroyed Tiger Woods himself, had he given in to it.

I have no idea how he used his personal time, but it is apparent from the historic success he has recently added to his amazing tally of record breaking achievements, he knew how to protect himself from the negativity of others.

Specifically, I refer to the bad habit of TV/Radio personalities, opinion leaders, analysts and others, of wanting to dismiss a person based on their personal assessment of him from the OUTSIDE, when they have no knowledge of what’s going on INSIDE of him.

Quite often, these are people who enjoy access to captive audiences of trusting enthusiasts who value their opinions – and often accept their judgment as accurate.

These kinds of people are often called “EXPERTS”

And the truth is that we need experts. They are useful. They help us gain insights we would otherwise not have, by sharing the information they obtain through investigation and analysis of trends and happenings in their fields of specialization.

However, as Cynthia Kersey explains in her book UNSTOPPABLE 45 Powerful Stories of Perseverance and Triumph from People Just Like You…the domain of the DREAMER (who has nothing to show besides an enduring passion, determination, courage, stick-to-it-iveness – aka persistence etc) is often alien territory for experts.

Experts want to assess you based on what exists or has been done before. So, if what you’re trying to do, in their world view, has never been done before, they are likely to conclude you cannot.

And when people whose opinions are so widely respected choose to speak with the authority they have, about your chances of success, it would be a literal nail in the coffin for your ambitions.

When powerful opinion leaders, who enjoy massive followership announce that they believe you’re finished, those who follow them are likely to conclude the same thing.

An excellent video I encountered on LinkedIn.com few weeks ago drives home this point quite well, by showings clips of some of such experts (sports analysts), speaking dismissively about Tiger Woods chances of ever making a successful comeback.

See subtitled screenshots I took showing transcripts of what they said…

1. “The short game is gone. His health is gone.”

2. “The next press release Tiger Woods should release, should be ‘I’m retiring’.

3. “I have considered him now for the last 5,6 years, a former golfer.”

4. “You’re washed, just give up while you’re ahead. Retire with some dignity.”

5. “The Tiger Woods that we all knew, he will never ever be that guy again.”

The video ends with a clip of Tiger raising his head slightly and smiling knowingly – no words are needed

Now that Tiger has gone ahead and done it, see how BAD they look and sound when you listen to them.

But you must realize that when they said what they did back then, many in their audience would have nodded in agreement with them!

And that’s the way the world is. Most people do not like to do their own thinking. They want others to do the hard work (and thinking in HARD WORK!) and then tell them.

The good thing about having people write you off is that you can use it challenge yourself – and prove to the world that you believe in yourself, more than they can.

To achieve authentic uncommon success, you simply must set yourself apart from the crowd and look inwards – especially when you notice others are using your past failures or mistakes to write you off. Do NOT let it get to you.

This brings me to a second and final point I want to draw your attention to, about what Tiger Woods went through to succeed:

Did you notice that very few people, if at all any, were willing to come out publicly to announce that they believed – in spite of what the experts mentioned above had publicly opined – that Tiger would (NOT COULD, I mean WOULD) still win big again e.g. at the Masters?

Did you notice that?

Have you seen any video, read any article or listened to any audio/podcast in which anyone stuck their necks out to say – contrary to what the “experts” had said – that Tiger would still go on to win?

I have not. If you have, please send me the links or details. I would LOVE to congratulate THAT person(s) for either being psychic or amazingly fanatical in their belief in Tiger.

In essence I’m saying Tiger Woods, when it came to the crunch, had to be his own Number 1 fan and believe unwaveringly that he could do it, no matter what happened, and no matter what others thought or said.

And he did just that.

However, what most people fail to realize is that there is a very important MENTAL or PSYCHOLOGICAL aspect to succeeding under those kinds of conditions in which everyone else thinks you should pack it in – except YOU!

You see, to achieve exceptional success of this kind, you need to have a DEEP sense of inner knowing about who you are, and what you are truly capable of achieving.

But this kind of self-knowing will not happen if you have not diligently applied yourself to the business of pushing yourself to exceed known limits to achieve at constantly higher levels.

You cannot be lazy, laid back or an armchair theorist kind of person and achieve this kind of result.

That’s why Tiger Woods succeeded. He had lived a life in which he IMMERSED himself in his golfing vocation tirelessly, from a very young age. The successes he achieved before he crashed testified to this fact.

And it was from THAT experience that he undoubtedly drew the needed inspiration to ignore naysayers. He knew what he’d done before, and what he could do again. So he set about doing it.

It was that simple.

Tiger Woods has shown how to respond to attempts that may be made to dismiss you as you try to achieve what others consider unlikely or impossible for you to do.

In particular, his message should resonate with those who have had some kind of setback and are trying to bounce back from failure (which is really only TEMPORARY DEFEAT) to authentic success.

What he did was to simply apply timeless wisdom used by so many other achievers in the past:

HE IGNORED NAYSAYERs & REFUSED TO QUIT.

To paraphrase James R. Cook from his book “The Startup Entrepreneur”:

“The only entrepreneur who fails is the one who quits trying to succeed”

Let no one tell you that you cannot succeed. They did not create you – and can therefore not define you, or your limits! They do not know you enough to be THAT sure.

Go out there and keep going after your dream – and your success will be INEVITABLE.

She was invited to the Experimental Aircraft Association AirVenture fly-in in Oshkosh, Wisconsin twice and on one occasion, she helped a young team of young Americans with no prior aircraft building experience to assemble a Zenith CH750 aircraft in a record one week.

That’s apart from income I earn selling my pre-built apps to clients across over 20 states in Nigeria, and other countries (Canada, UK, UAE, Tanzania, Uganda, Ghana, Guinea etc)

In teaching what I know, I draw DEEP on my over 2 decades of expertise and experience (7 years in paid employment, and over 15 years in self-employment) as one who has built high performing Excel-VB software (adopted for official use in a corporate multinational + purchased by clients in and out of Africa) to guide learners.

[Above] Quick Tip

Let’s say you – or an employee – want to know the exact details of his/her salary (breakdown) for a particular month, this query table comes in handy. ALL the cells colored black require entries to be made into them.

1. Click in the NAME field. Use drop menu button that appears to choose the name you want.

NB: If you are sure you know the correct spelling, you can type the name of the employee you want, directly into the field. Any other parameter can be used to extract information from a database of this nature – including NUMERIC values like Identification No. or Account No. and so on.

2. Click in the MONTH field and choose the month you wish to check salary for.

Summary : If you have correctly entered data in the Salaries Data table for the chosen employee, the table will return the appropriate values for him/her for the period specified.

PRINTING PAYSLIPs

1. You can print 15 pay slips at a time. Click in the first black colored cell in the row under the “Print Pay Slips For Staff Below” heading. Use drop menu to select name you want.

2. Move to next row, and choose another name. Delete ANY entries in the remaining cells below the last one you want to us.

This is NECESSARY to ensure the program does NOT print excess slips, that will be useless, and cause paper/ink wastage!!

3. Next, click the “View Pay slips” button above. The program will display the EXACT number of pay slips, each with the chosen employee’s name, at 6 pay slips per page. Scroll through to be sure all is OK.

4. Finally, click “Print Preview Pay slips” to print the prepared pay slips. Repeat process for the next 15.

Click “Home” to return to the query table view.

[Above] Quick Tip

This is the monthly summary table + the accompanying bar chart (below it). They show how much salary payment is made by department.

You may find this information/analysis of salary “spread” useful in your company’s decision making.

Summary : Click in the black colored cell and use the drop menu button that appears to choose the month for which you want to view salary information displayed by department.

The changes in data occurs within seconds in both the numeric report as well as the bar chart below it.

PRINTING: Click “Print Preview Summary” button to print the sumary table with the bar chart.

PII 161: You Need to be a Leader in Thought and Action [True Story: How I Created & Sold my “Employee Morale Gauge Quiz” to Local and International Buyers]

Many of my followers on this blog may not be aware of this, but I started out offering speaking and training services for career persons in paid employment ALONGSIDE my efforts to develop Farm Business Support Solutions for Farm CEOs. Over time I let the market’s response teach me which one to focus on MORE – hence my emphasis today, on serving Farm Business Owners in particular, and others in general.

In this issue of my Performance Improvement Ideas (PII) newsletter, I discuss a tool I developed while still in paid employment, which I’ve since used to serve clients in both above mentioned markets, earning name/brand recognition, as well as income in the process. I conceived and developed my popular Employee Morale Gauge (a 10 item attitudinal survey based) quiz in 1999, while working as a young brewer/manager in Guinness Nigeria PLC.

It was the product of many months of deep thinking driven by my need to understand what made employees adopt seemingly negative (or nonchalant) attitudes they displayed towards their jobs.

Back then as an employee, I was a self-motivated achiever who constantly sought ways to improve myself in order to deliver better workplace performances.

The insights I gained equipped me to achieve several notable successes in the workplace (especially in leading others to get important work done), leading to senior management career advancement opportunities, less than 7 years after I joined the company as a Graduate Management Trainee (read details on the web based version of my resume on LinkedIn.com – click to view in a new window or download my PDF resume).

After he got wind of yet another career advancement opportunity that had yet again been awarded to me, in 1998, an older colleague who joined the company over a decade before me, asked: “Tayo, what is your secret”.

At the time I had not really articulated and distilled the insights I’d gained. So I just told him, I put in my best at all time.

But his question got me thinking and I began to string my thoughts together to arrive at a better, more useful answer. In the process, I came to the realization that many employees I interacted with in the company, and elsewhere, did not share a similar passion to mine.

The insights I gained helped me conceive the Employee Moral Gauge quiz to identify identify/measure how employees felt about their jobs, with a view to using the results to get them to do more, and do so happily.

You see, as an employee, I LOVED to challenge myself to make the best of whatever workplace situation I found myself in.

Not everyone likes that. Not everyone likes to be a problem solver.

Some people want the problems sorted out before they have to be there. They just want to show up and get told what to do, so they can do it, get out and get paid at the end of the month.

And that’s not bad. But such persons must also not expect to be made champions in the workplace, if they continue with such an attitude.

The irony is that such people will often turn around and complain when they get passed over, for career advancement opportunities, in favour of a self-driven achiever who makes the best of what s/he is given at all times!!!

Most of them often gave excuses and complaints for being unwilling to put their hearts and souls into work like they saw me do.

My informal conversations with them revealed a common theme – they felt the employer failed to provide working conditions they considered ideal.

Many times however what they told me they expected made little practical sense. And if I, as a fellow employee felt that way about their expectations, it was no surprise that the company’s management simply did not bother.

[Now here’s a bit of irony: Some of the people who fail to put in their best as employees, post-retirement, when running their own companies, are often the kind who demand greater effort from their own employees – the kind they refused to give to their own employers!]

The smart employer/manager/leader will know how to create workplace conditions that:

1. Continually inspire self-driven high achieving employees to keep putting in their best at work

2. Allow little or no room for naughty employees to get away with sloth, indifference or any other negative attitudes – and instead get them to deliver the results s/he is paying them for.

One instrument that can help employers/leaders accurately determine what they need to do to achieve the above, and more, is my 10 item Employee Moral Gauge Quiz.

Creating Awareness About my Quiz to Organizational Leaders – How It All Began

Having placed 5th (due to a mishap I caused myself) at the National Finals of the Nigerian Institute of Management’s Young Manager’s competition 2 years earlier (1997) where I presented a paper based on my real life workplace projects in the brewery titled “Statistical Process Control & Target Setting”, I wrote a management paper, to present my quiz to a formal audience.

Unfortunately, my 1999 paper failed to win the interest of judges at the competition, so I failed to go beyond the zonal competition.

But I was undaunted by that rejection of my new paper.

Indeed I was convinced that my paper and the tool I’d conceived had real potential for application in accurately evaluating employee morale.

So I chose to self-publish it for use in starting up my entrepreneurial journey.

In 2007, I published it online for the first time (on my flagship website – spontaneousdevelopmentdotcom) – in article format, ending with a reproduction of the questionnaire, with guidelines for its use.

Soon after, I published it on my Ezinearticles.com article marketing profile.

A lot of exciting benefits have since accrued to me, such as the following:

1. The article rapidly got lots of views and boosted my visibility in search engines, leading to visits to my website, and some enquiries about the questionnaire. But this was before I began aiming to sell my stuff online. I was not yet aware that I could do so. Instead I was focused on pavement pounding, looking for clients to hire me face to face.

2. India’s ICFAI university contacted me asking if I was the original author of the article and the questionnaire tool.

It took telling them repeatedly – as they asked repeatedly – that I was indeed the original owner of the intellectual work, before they went ahead to inform me that they wished to publish it in their journal titled “Employee Morale: Concepts and Cases”.

I never did get the copy of the journal that was promised. But they let me know the journal was published in their online store, with my paper listed as one of the entries. Click here.

3. I earned income selling the paper for $35 US Dollars on an author agency website (they took a commission from the earnings). My buyers were HR Managers and persons in similar roles.

4. Some websites have published syndicated versions of the paper – and some business organizations even adopted it for formal use:

5. The CEO of a medium sized manufacturing client company I worked for in 2008 paid me to administer the Employee Morale Gauge Quiz to his factory employees, as part of the implementation of a Best Operating Process Management System project he hired me to implement.

I could not help but notice how eagerly he read through the ratings and comments on each (anonymously filled) form to get an idea of how the staff “felt” about working in his company.

What I Want You to Take Away…

My purpose for sharing the above is not to brag.

Far from it.

Those who follow my writing on this blog most likely will have noticed that I share my experience based achievements mainly to inform, educate, inspire and entertain my target audience, towards helping them IMPROVE themselves to do what they do better.

In particular I am keen to help as many as are willing WAKE UP to the realization that EVERY ONE of us has genius within him/her. You just need to discover what yours is, so that you can share it with the world.

When you do so, you manifest the full potential embedded in you by the Creator, and in the process BLESS others, thereby making the world better than it would have been, if you had NOT done it.

The story about how I conceived my quiz and wrote a paper to explain how to use it, after which I promoted it through as many channels as I could think of, proves that anything is possible, if one is willing to believe, and take action based on that belief.

My message to you therefore is that YOU NEED TO find your own genius, and believe enough in yourself to use it to meet a need in the world.

Whatever your current job, vocation or profession is, you can dig deep, think hard to create/innovate/invent new or better ways of doing what you do. Aim to be a leader in thought as well as action.

Resolve to constantly challenge yourself to generate new ideas that open doors for new levels of achievement to be reached.

Just yesterday, I published a new blog recommending the article titled “College is Dying, Design Your Own Education – by Jonny of Hackernoon.com”. In it, I linked to 3 other write-ups from several years earlier (two of them – one of which is a 62 page White Paper – written by me) on the same theme.

My eyes were opened to this problem through reading and listening to VISIONARY THINKERS like Robert Kiyosaki (author of If You Want to be Rich and Happy, Don’t Go to School and Why A Students Work for C Students and Why B Students Work for the Government) and Sir Ken Robinson (TEDx talk titled Schools Kill Creativity).

It goes without saying that OUR numbers are growing i.e. those of us who SEE the harsh reality and are unafraid to say what others also SEE but are too scared to say or admit.

Like it or not, you – as a parent, teacher, or policy maker – will at some point (if you are yet to) come to ACCEPT that things need to change completely.

Our so called “education systems” no longer work well enough to support our individual societies.

We need to overhaul them and adopt a new system that is tried and tested. One which requires education to be DECENTRALIZED and customized to suit each child’s peculiar needs.

So much reinventing needs to be done – and societies that fail to make the needed changes WILL be left FAR behind by others that do!

It’s that simple.

On 1st November 2017, I posted a link recommending the article titled Why The Degree is Dying (and being replaced by something better) by Isaac Morehouse – Founder & CEO of Praxis.

Five years earlier, on 13th November 2012, I’d written an experience based blog post titled A New Generation of Entrepreneurs PROVES That Our Schools Need To Offer a Different Kind of Education!

That earlier piece voiced my concern about the serious need for a total overhaul of the formal schooling system which most societies continue to operate, despite glaring evidence that it was becoming less and less relevant to the real world learners would have to enter!

I have since gone on to publish a 62 page White Paper which I have been invited to discuss with policy makers’ representatives. Read TRUE STORY: An Invitation from The Ministry of Youth and Social Development to Discuss My Paper Titled “Schooling Is a Means to an End and NOT an End In Itself”

The article previewed/linked below was written on 4th September 2018, less than 6 months ago, and echoes the same sentiments expressed in the write-ups mentioned above. The obvious implication is that nothing has changed, and our schools continue to offer what is effectively irrelevant education.
