PII 037: Beware of Naughty/Misguided Advisers [Deciding Who to Listen to When Searching for YOUR Success Formula]

In my 14 years as an entrepreneur, I’ve often been amused by arm-chair theorist kinds of people I’ve frequently met.

They have little or no experience at what they see YOU trying to do, but they will repeatedly insist on giving YOU advice on how to go about it.

People have the benefit of being able to sit on the sidelines and watch you fall flat on your face and get up each time, as you battle to find a formula that works to achieve your valued goal.

Before you start doing it, they have little or no concrete advice or even suggestions to offer. But they make a point of keeping tabs on you to check on your progress or otherwise.

Then using the feedback they get either directly from you, or via enquiries they make to those they know are close to you, they come back to present themselves as being “wiser” about what you’re trying to do.

 

However, challenge them to go out and put their proposed ideas to work for themselves, and they’ll come up with countless reasons why they should not do it, or why it would not be the right time.

 

Yet these same people, knowing they fear going out to get themselves dirty in the process of DOING, will continue loudly professing themselves as authorities of sorts, using the benefit of hindsight based on their knowledge of what you (and others like you) have been (or as passing) through.

 

Don’t get me wrong.

There are sometimes people who fall in this group who possess the rare ability to extract valuable insights and lessons from ANALYSING successes and failures of others, in order to condense success rules, principles and guidelines for others to follow.

 

Such people often go on to write excellent books that end up helping others achieve successes they would otherwise not have recorded.

A good example is the timeless classic – Think and Grow Rich, written by Napoleon Hill, who interviewed hundreds of authentically successful persons to author that wonderful piece of work.

 

The difference between these few exceptions and the larger misguided majority is however that the former NEVER forget to accept and acknowledge the EXPERT AUTHORITY status of their subjects i.e. those they choose to use as their models/sources/references.

 

Without those DOING it, there would be nothing for the critics and theorists to refer to, in order to draw their wonderful conclusions, be they positive or negative.

 

This point is VERY important and needs to be kept in mind at all times in evaluating the performance of any person, in any area of endeavor.

 

Soccer fans and their analysts, indeed sports fans and enthusiasts of music, entertainment and others vocations, worldwide are renowned for their ability to pass unbridled comments on the individuals under the spotlight – DOING the performing.

Most of them however have NEVER had a single moment of conscious experience DOING what they boldly assess those trained professionals they pass comments on.

Yet that never stops them for volunteering their opinions.

 

And that’s all well and good, since in most cases, the decision makers who really matter rarely pay attention to uninformed opinions from the public in planning what is to happen.

 

The danger I see however is when some people who belong to that misguided group of people who HONESTLY believe they know enough, gain access to positions or channels that enable them INFLUENCE decision making that impacts the individual DOING the work.

 

Thankfully, the chances of that happening in professional circles are slim, which explains why we are often able to enjoy the best quality of performance most times.

 

However, there is one area in which these people can – and sometimes do – get to have more than a passing influence of others.

 

A good example of an area damage can happen is found on the Internet – specifically REVIEWS of products, services and other solutions by self-appointed reviewers.

 

This process involves giving their (presumably informed) opinion about the value to be had from a product, service or solution on offer by an individual, group or organization.

 

What I’ve noticed is that there such reviewers often fall into 3 categories:

 

  1. The Good

 

These are the guys who know what they are doing, and who understand how it needs to be done, to ensure their followers get the accurate picture to take correct decisions.

 

  1. The Naughty

 

These are the guys who know what they are doing, but are working a negative agenda, for themselves and/or a paying client, to paint an inaccurate/misleading picture as possible, about rival others, so as to “herd” readers/followers to adopt a different option.

 

Personally, I believe these guys are in the minority, and often easy to spot.

 

  1. The Misguided

 

My experiences and observations indicate that this 3rd group of people are in the majority, and tend to do the most damage – though they actually do NOT intend to!

 

You see, they are people who think they KNOW, but do not actually know ENOUGH. They think they understand, but do not actually understand ENOUGH.

 

As a result of that double malady that afflicts them, they end up giving what often results in VERY misleading advice to trusting followers looking for guidance about what to do and how.

 

A specific instance in which I have repeatedly seen this 3rd group of people act in this manner is with regard to their assessment of how effective Web Marketing is for instance.

My personal story illustrates this quite well.

In 2004, I decided to formally begin using the web to market my products and services when I found that I could no longer afford to explore the channel of paid paper advertising – which had yielded practically NIL results for me.

 

At the time, I was not even aware that I could succeed in selling online – locally and internationally – like I do today, without meeting people face to face. But I felt, from reading the works of top web marketers at the time, that I could find a way to leverage the low cost nature of web marketing, to boost my marketing reach and impact within Nigeria.

 

However, looking back at the barrage of criticisms, tactless comments, and unsolicited advice I got from people who were mostly clueless about the web, talk less the nuts and bolts of web marketing, I cannot help feeling sorry for others who passed through a similar phase, without having my kind of mental attitude.

 

You see, since I did not start out knowing how to make it all work right, I practically had to learn as I worked. So I did LOTS of falling and standing up and falling – again and again and again. It was very messy, and for a guy who often lacked cash flow, it was damn costly.

 

I got ridiculed and reminded that I was in Nigeria and that the idea of using Web Marketing the way I’d conceived it would only work in Oyinbo land.

Guess what? I ignored ALL of them, with few exceptions.

One major reason why I did that was the lessons I’d learned from succeeding in my previous life as an employee – and also from what I’d read in many success books. I

knew that persistence/perseverance, determination and vision were the most critical ingredients needed to make the impossible happen. So, each time these people offered their one sided views, I simply used what they said to focus my energies and refine my approach, until I made it.

An Important Note: I saw from studying most of them carefully, that they lacked the self-discipline to stick long enough with ANYTHING that did not work out quickly.

So, it was obvious to me that they got easily frustrated and therefore tended to voice their negative opinions about the workability of an idea or opportunity based on their THEIR personal limitations, and not on reality.

Taking advice from such people would therefore amount to letting them impose THEIR limitations on me. I was NOT wired that way – so I tuned them out.

 

Fast forward to today. THIS moment. Now.

None of them have taken the pains to advance significantly in their know-how as it relates to using the web for marketing.

This despite the fact that some now run their own business. But they no longer cast aspersion on my announced approach to DOING it – because the NEWS is all over the place that I’ve been excelling and setting the standard for DOING it.

 

I’ve honed (and continue to hone) my expertise in attracting buyers at low to zero cost for the solutions I offer, without needing to meet them in the flesh. I enjoy growing name/brand recognition that others who use paid advertising routinely cannot boast of.

My Web Marketing success is happening for me because I chose to IGNORE the naughty and especially the MISGUIDED reviewers and opinion givers/advisers who came around me while I was still learning.

 

Instead, I looked for people who I could see KNEW what they were talking about, and devoted quality time and effort to LEARN from them, then apply what I learned from them to suit my unique needs.

The result is the powerful visibility I enjoy today, for what I do.

Do NOT let yourself be misled by the naughty and misguided people running around like “fear merchants” offering unfounded views and opinions. Focus on finding people who are DOING IT, and DOING IT RIGHT, and who are willing to tell you the truth about what it takes to succeed.

 

I happen to be one such person. I KNOW my stuff. My work/reputation speaks for me.

In addition to constantly challenging the status quo and influencing positive work changes, he built a reputation for using self-taught spreadsheet programming skills (starting with Lotus 1-2-3, and later moving to Excel Visual Basic) – in his spare time – to develop Automated Spreadsheet Applications to computerize manual report generation processes in the departments he worked. Over four(4) of his applications were adopted for brewery level reporting.

Tayo holds a B.Sc degree in Agricultural Extension Services from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, having graduated top of his class – with Second Class Upper Division honors – in 1992. It is a powerful time saving formula constructed using 2 different functions – enabling timely and convenient extraction of data from a database while reducing the chances of user entry errors being made during routine data recording of product sales record

Index/Match Formulas are indispensable tools for  organizing data as well as creating reports and analyses.  I have found them most useful for creating reports from spreadsheet databases in which the data to be handled is already summarized.

Indeed, I’ve found them especially useful in  handling data summaries generated using SUMPRODUCT formulas . All my applications make generous use of these functions and most times they meet 80% of my needs. STUDY the formula using the notes provided on this page.

PII 036: You Need to Think before You Spend – Everything is Negotiable!

It pays to form the habit of aiming to get the best possible value for your money.

There are some people who believe a person who is truly financially successful will not fret about costs – and will instead readily pay whatever s/he is asked, since s/he can afford it.

Sadly, those who think – and live – this way often tend to be persons frequently living well above their means, and far from being financially independent.

In other words, they do not even come close to fitting the description of WEALTHY people as described in the classic bestselling book titled “The Millionaire Next Door“.

In that book, one of the defining qualities that those found by the authors to be financial independent (i.e. having enough wealth to not need to work anymore to maintain their lifestyle) were people with a history of being frugal in every area of their lives.

For instance, they often shop for bargains and rarely settle for buying at expensive retail outlets that media-hyped celebrity types often go to.

Why?

Because such ” Millionaires Next Door” kind of people understand that taking care of the small change, ensures they hold on to more of their big denominated monies.

People who build their wealth from the ground up never lose their respect for money. They know the way they treat money determines how long they get to keep it around them.

The mental discipline that comes from handling money in this manner – wherein couples sit at the dining or kitchen table each night/weekend to review their income against expenses – is why they are able to STAY rich (sometimes after climbing out of poverty to get there).

Your attitude towards spending money will affect how you handle money in your personal as well as work/business life. This is why it pays to develop the kind of discipline described above.

If for nothing else, do so to avoid letting naughty vendors take advantage of you.

3 personal true stories that illustrate how paying attention to your spending can save you from wasting money:

Recently, we got hold of a new DVD- but my but soon found we could not get the audio to play, even though we could see the crystal clear video images playing back.

After a lot of trial and error, coupled with brainstorming, the kids told me they’d narrowed down to the cable linking the DVD to the TV for audio and video, as faulty.

I challenged them to explain how they could be sure. They told me nothing convincing but continued to insist it was the only logical possibility.

So, I gave them money to go and get a new cable.

A few hours later, they were looking even more stumped as their new cable had not solved the problem!

I was not surprised.

Experience had taught me that it was always best to avoid spending before establishing what the fault is.

Instead go to someone with more knowledge/expertise or insights about the problem and get his/her opinion to help you make a more intelligent deduction about what to do, and how.

That approach has saved me lots of time, and money in the past.

But I wanted my kids to see the difference – so I’d given in to them.

Now that they’d seen that they got it wrong, I reminded them of the suggestion I’d made that they visit the neighborhood technician.

They agreed, and soon returned with news that the man had also initially fingered the cable, but later traced the fault to a component in the DVD itself.

He’d then told them it would cost N1, 000.0 (One Thousand Naira – $1.8 USD approxat the current “crazy” exchange rate).

When I heard that, I took the opportunity to share my experience with them about how to avoid paying too much.

Generally vendors habitually jack up their prices in anticipation that the prospective buyer will demand a hefty reduction. If the latter does not demand such, they end up scalping him/her.

But I argue that some people may not be one of those who love to show they have money by not asking questions about the price they are asked to pay.

There will be people who would be glad to save money in the course of making purchases. Such people need to know they can – and should – try to negotiate pocket friendly prices that will enable them use their money to get more done.

The kids had told me the man wished to speak with me. So later that night I went there with one of my boys. The minute he saw me, the man said it would cost N1, 500.0 (One Thousand Five Hundred Naira).

I told him my kids had said it was N1, 000.0 but he said they’d heard wrong.

At that point I told him we could not pay that much and that if it was going to cost that much, I’d prefer to wait until later to get the money together, noting that N1,500.0 sounded just too high anyway.

As I made to leave, he called out to ask how much I was willing to pay. I replied that N500.0 was all I could afford to spend given my currently limited budget.

 

He agreed – and asked us to wait while he fixed it.

I took my son aside and asked him if he noted how we’d gone from N1, 000.0 to N1, 500.0 then DOWN to N500.0 within a matter of minutes. His eyes gleamed in understanding as he nodded.

When he later told his elder brother, the latter exclaimed “WOW”.

I ended the day by telling them that when a person gives you a price, it’s rarely going to be cast in stone.

Quite often, you can -and should – try to ask for a better offer. If you don’t ask, you’ll never know what you can get.

While we were waiting, I casually asked the technician how much the cable the kids bought sold for in the market. He replied that it was usually N150 to N200.

My kids had bought it for N300! What was worse, the technician took one look at it and pronounced it substandard i.e. not the original.

So, the vendor had taken advantage of the ready payment made by the kids, to sell them a poor quality version at a price higher than the good quality one. Again, I pointed this fact out to my son – and reminded him to share with his siblings.

Before we left, yet another learning opportunity presented itself.

A lady pepper soup seller came around and served a small bowl of pepper soup to the wife of the technician, who was seated with their baby just outside the shop.

When I saw it, I asked the seller how much it cost – with the intention of buying a bowl for my son, so he could taste it for the first time.

She promptly said “N150”.

But there was something about the way she said it that made me decide I would ask the technician’s wife. So after the seller had retired to the chair at the estate security gate man’s post, across the street, I asked the wife of the technician how much the bowl of soup had cost here.

She said “N100”. I told her the seller had said it was N150 – but she looked quickly back at me and said “Ah no, it’s N100!”

I thanked her, then called out to the seller, and said “Madam, she says she bought her bowl for N100?” pointing to the technician’s wife.

The lady eventually agreed and sold us a similar bowl of soup for N100.

I looked at my son, who had listened to both exchanges and he nodded in understanding. I later told him that asking the seller how much an item is, under certain circumstances, can reveal to him/her that you are not a “regular buyer” and so do not know the real or standard price.

Some sellers/vendors could choose to sell to you at a higher price, and if you fail to discover that is happening, they could go on selling that way to you for YEARS, while others around you get the normal prices and you would not be wiser.

Even if you can afford it, THAT is not a prudent way to use your money. If you can pay N50 why pay N100? It’s better to pay the right price and use what’s left for other important expenses. That will mean you end up with MORE money in your pockets or bank account in the long run.

Now, I know the examples I’ve given are on the personal level, but the truth is that the principle applies to business and workplace situations just as well.

Applying This to Your Farm Business/Workplace

In these harsh economic times, the need to do a lot of HARD thinking before you spend cannot be overemphasized.

There are products and services that you will identify as necessary, but not all of them will come at prices you find affordable or pocket friendly.

You will need to begin studying ALL areas you spend money on. Take the pains to check what your suppliers tell you about the prices you pay, and compare with what obtains from other sources.

Check and compare the prices with the volume and quality you’re getting, to accurately determine that you’re getting justifiable value for your money.

In some cases, regardless of your best efforts, you may discover that some of those items cannot be found at any price lower than what you are told by the vendor. In such cases, if you have no viable alternative, you’ll have to go ahead and buy – or plan towards doing so, by putting the needed money aside over time.

What is important is that you train yourself to always diligently check and ensure that you get something as close as possible for anything you spend your money on.

Once you’re certain that quality and reliability is assured, go a step further to ensure you do not pay more than is reasonable. It pays to be frugal!

No matter how rich you are, reckless spending will only deplete your resources avoidably. And since there is no person or business that does not go through periods of cash flow limitations, a history or habit of poor spending can come round to haunt you later on!

This time around, in addition to going further to show a more advanced use of range names in a complex formula, I also show how to use them in VBA code to manipulate large spreadsheet data ranges at once.

This range (D9: D503) is named “nfItemsSold”. I’ve hidden rows 40 to 503 to fit the table into the print-ready format for this tutorial. To display the full table, click on the row header labeled 39 and drag two or more steps downwards to highlight row header labeled 504 or higher, then right-click and cilick UNHIDE on the shortcut menu that appears. Th efull table will be displayed. Note that clicking ANY of the ERASE buttons above will cause ALL entries in the entrie table length to be erased, regardless of whether the rows are hidden or not

Below: Note how the autocomplete feature is activated as soon as I type the period after the range name definition. In other words, Excel recognises this defined name as an object and readily supplied “properties” for me to choose from. I choose “C learContents” which achieves the effect of erasing the contents of the specified range.

I added the last 2 VBA subroutines to enable you see the ERASE code working while the table is fully displayed and also while part of it is hidden. You will find this kind of functiona;ity useful in handling  large spreadsheets.

You Need Education That Works and Not “Fancy Schooling” Ego Trips [True Story: Pretty Nigerian Lady Earns Living as Self-Taught Carpenter]

Schooling the industrial revolution way is NOT the only way to get an education: Myriad other ways abound – and they don’t take as long, or cost as much – especially in today’s rapidly evolving technology driven world!

The world has changed – and so has the way it learns. Those who want to stay relevant to its needs will need to change with it or go extinct.

The story (reported on the website linked at the end of this article) about a 100% self-taught Pretty Nigerian Lady Carpenter proves it.

The problem is that people who profit from the archaic teaching and learning models from the industrial age, and who are too lazy to THINK up modifications to accommodate this new need of the market they serve, refuse to admit the above stated truth.

Successful People or Great Achievers Are Not All-Knowing! [Hint: Why YOU Must Never Let Anyone, No Matter How Successful, Dismiss Your Authentic Passion Driven Ideas/Dreams]

In case you didn’t know it, YOU owe YOUR car ownership ability TODAY, to the vision, self-belief, determination and persistence of a man who lacked formal schooling.

Not many people know this, but Henry Ford started out working for THE great Thomas Edison as a stark iliterate.

A testimony to the inspirational power that comes from exposure to the right environment can be seen in the fact that one day Ford (as a so called “stark illiterate”) got the idea to build an affordable car for non-wealthy masses.

This development is easy to understand when one considers the fact that Ford’s employer himself had only few months of elementary schooling, having been homeschooled by his mother.

Ford would have accurately concluded, based on Edison’s exploits, that lack of formal schooling (though useful and easily remedied) was not a fatal handicap in pursuit of success.

Ironically however, when he told his famous inventor boss about his idea, the great Edison dismissed it and instead offered him promotion to the position of Supervisor adding that he would be involved in “more important work”.

That last sentence brings me to the core message I want to pass across in this short piece that ends, below, with a link to a full narration about Henry Ford’s life and achievements.

My message is this:

As long as you believe in your dream or idea or vision and you are prepared to diligently/intelligent pursue it with persistence and faith, nothing that any other person, no matter how successful, should make you quit.

I repeat:

Nothing that any other person tells you should make you give up on your dreams. My hard-won experience from 7 years in paid employment plus 14 years (and counting) in self-employment have taught me not all great minds will see what another great minds can see.

This is why, for instance, I personally do NOT like competitions that depend on celebrities to choose people with the best business ideas, musical talents etc.

Fela Anikulapo Kuti continues in death to grow in recognition across the world, as a musical genius.

The truth is however that the kind of music Fela invented is very unlikely to have won him first prize in a reality TV show style event where judges and coaches have the final say.

We all know how contrarian Fela was, even as a young man. Yet those attributes that would have rubbed opinionated celebrity judges and coaches the wrong way in such competitions were the keys to his success in the real world.

This is why I believe the “market” for which an idea, invention or innovation is meant, should have the final say via a system that is free from manipulation.

This message is not just for you/me, but also for your/my kids.

We need to help our kids develop healthy levels of self-esteem based on the experience of doing in key areas of life that relates to nurturing their talents/geniuses towards succeeding in life.

This is important because during that journey, they will periodically come across successful others from whom they may have to learn and also accept advice.

It’s however their ability to know what NOT to learn or accept, no matter how well intentioned it is, that will help them stay on track to success in any area of endeavour.

Successful People or Great Achievers Are Not All-Knowing!

Most of them are aware of this fact, but societal pressures sometimes force them to accept to play roles that suggest the contrary.

If Henry Ford had allowed his respect and admiration for Edison to cloud his reasoning about his “car for the masses” idea, he would never have had the courage to reject Edison”s offer, and instead quit his job to invest all he had in pursuit of his dream.

If he had not done that, the revolution that took place in the automobile industry would not have happened.

Simply put therefore, vision, self-belief, determination and persistence are constant keys to authentic success in life. All other factors are variables in the success equation.
