You Need to Reap the Best Possible Wisdom From Every Bout of Adversity

As much as I’d love to NOT notice it, the negative discrimination directed at people in my part of the world, by those from other parts of the world continues to periodically show up.

This is especially as it relates to using 3rd party platforms – including web hosting, which is paid, as well as email, which is sometimes free.

Since 2005, when I began making formal use of the web as a Nigerian based in Nigeria/Africa, I have experienced all sorts of discrimination ranging from the subtle, to the direct or in-your-face kind.

Quite often when it has happened, I have lacked reliable access to any channel where I could get fair hearing, if anything at all.

And I’m not the only one.

Many people from my part of the world continue to face this challenge of having to endure one-sided relationships with providers they use, even when they are paying.

Only few muster the courage to say anything about it though. I belong to that minority – and I have quite a few stories to tell :-)

I recall reading and hearing several stories about a popular online payment processing platform used globally, periodically locking up funds in the accounts of people from Nigeria with little or no explanation.

This was often not unlinked to suspicion, rightly or not, of naughty activity based on our people’s Yahoo reputation.

In several cases, I have been made to understand that owners of such funds, even when supposedly innocent of any wrong doing, had to forfeit the money.

Now getting wrongly sanctioned by online companies due to my Nigerian identity is something I’ve experienced.

I’ve now returned to using LinkedIn.com, but a few years ago I boycotted that platform from March 2013 (a month before I relocated to Cotonou) in protest of unfair treatment.

What happened to make me take such drastic action?

I wrote 3 articles about the entire saga – which included one in which I complained that they continued to send me notifications after I opted out.

I only returned to that platform late last year because I believed I’d built enough name/brand recognition online to minimize the chances of such a mix-up happening again.

My nasty 2012 LinkedIn.com experience in which my account was suddenly locked with no explanation other than a “suspicious activity” note from the Support Staff taught me to tread with caution in dealing with the other providers.

Let me make it clear here that I seriously doubt that LinkedIn.com as an organization intended to treat me unfairly.

No.

Instead, I honestly believe the particular individual(s) who took those actions were the ones acting based in bias, taking advantage of their position in the company to do what they did.

Not long after the above incident, a website on which my published articles were being sold for $25 USD and above (they kept 60%) kicked me off their platform on a flimsy excuse.

What was my offence?

The editor claimed I’d submitted a low quality article that necessitated my being asked to leave.

I wrote a reply stating that I had several write-ups that had been selling on their platform, and if there was any new submission I made that did not meet any set standard, THAT would be a first.

I ended by asking what article he had in mind.

I got no response from him, so I went on my (i.e this blog) and posted about it.

Some days later I discovered my account had been reinstated, and the articles promotion plug-in from their site was once again displaying my published pieces on my blog.

But the next time I submitted a new piece (which you can imagine I’d taken extra care to write) the same editor promptly informed me that I’d been expelled from the site etc.

I felt so used and dumped.

Would you believe that less than a year later this same website that had stopped sending me updates, having kicked me out, suddenly began sending me email updates again?

I simply wasn’t having that. So, I wrote a polite email reminding them that they had expelled me, and stopped sending me member updates months before. It was therefore surprising to see that they were once again sending me emails containing messages meant for current members. I ended by making it clear I had no further interest in using their website.

So why am I bringing this up now?

Well it’s because those experiences have taught me to ALWAYS have a backup alternative action plan to deal with the possibility of a sudden and unexpected withdrawal of a 3rd party resource I may be using.

For as long as it is NOT in your control (i.e. someone else has the final say on who can use it and how), you would be wise to think up a viable alternative line of action to achieve your goal, in the event of an unexpected loss of access to the normal service you use.

This mental attitude has helped me remain unstoppable in every area of endeavour I have ever ventured in life. Indeed, I have found it quite useful to maintain a slight paranoid state of mind in this regard, wherein no matter how well things are going, I am constantly thinking that something is likely to go wrong, and therefore proactively planning to overcome whatever unexpected visitations of adversity that may incur.

Looking back, even as recently as 40 days ago, when the mailing list management service I have used for years suddenly disabled my sending access, this strategy has proven to be a REAL life saver for me!

When I clicked SEND to broadcast my Monday newsletter for that week, and the automated message popped up, my mind simply kicked into survival mode.

I instantly knew it was unlikely that I would be able to resolve it that night (or ever: they never replied my queries).

But since I’d always had a plan B in place, I simply put that in motion and less than 45 minutes later, I’d exported my subscriber emails to a new platform, configured the HTML message and clicked send to dispatch.

And guess what?

Since then I’ve actually found that what happened was a blessing of sorts in disguise, because as I type these words, I now have access to what is a superior mix of benefits on this new platform, compared the one I used before.

Not only does it offer more features, but it is also more usable on mobile platforms, so that I am able to do ALL I want to right from my Smartphone with no hassle at all.

Little wonder that I have had NO problem signing up for a paid quarterly version of the service!

Long story short: It pays to be prepared with an alternative action plan (or plans!) in case something goes wrong with your routine process/operation.

But – as my experiences have revealed – it pays even better to keep an open mind, in order to reap the best possible wisdom from every bout of adversity one goes through.

So, in a way, it becomes obvious that those who seek to cause you pain in the long run help you by forcing you to LEARN to be strong and deal with hardship in order to excel!

In my language, Yoruba, we have a saying that accurately captures the above:

Adani loro nfi agbara ko ni (Translation: Those who cause you pain teach you to be strong)

Your ability to write convincingly, in the manner described by Terry (and which I’ve touched on in several articles and books I’ve written over the past 10 years) will be a crucial determinant of your success or otherwise.

Do you want to know how you become an expert? In America?

You Write a book! That’s how you become an expert.

It doesn’t even have to be a good book.

The basic principle about writing, is that you have to write and then edit later…because we’re still under the perfectionist complex.
Create a basic outline of what you wanna write:

A working title, which will change later most likely.

Some basic points that you wanna talk about.

And then start writing…and don’t quit writing, until you’re done.

Lock yourself away to do it, if necessary.

If you have a week’s vacation from work coming up – that’s when you do it!

And you do it all…until you don’t wanna write anymore.

And here’s what your mind will constantly say: That’s not perfect – delete, delete, delete, delete…

Type, type, type…I don’t like that either….delete, delete, delete…

And if you do that for 2 hours…what do you have after those 2 hours?

Nothing!

You have nothing. You stare at a blank page.

A principle of copywriting, that applies to all types of writing, is that…

New writers/new copywriters: The first few things they write, you end up deleting all of them anyway, because you’re just getting warmed up, just getting into the groove.

But that takes place during the editing process.

And if you write and delete to start over, you never get to the good stuff.

So, you wanna sit down and write quickly.

Write it all out – no matter how bad it looks right now.

….

If you’re writing an email…customer, list, pre-list, it doesn’t matter….

I want you to pick out one person in the list that you know well and I want you to write your email as if you’re sending your email as if your were sending just an email just to them.
No matter what you’re doing.

You’re giving out free information? Same rule.

You’re writing ad copy? Same rule!

Write it as if you’re writing to someone who is your friend.

And do you know what will happen?

Over time, after getting the communications, if you’ve done a good job of it, they’re going to feel like you’re friends.
You might not have a hundred thousand subscribers, but can you find someone who does in your niche?

And you don’t that many…that’s why I mentioned that you might not have 5,000 buyers, but can you find someone who does?

And if you can, we now have the potential to reach this niche, because we now know what they want – because they already told us.
Your direct response website is simply a sales letter.

Pretty websites win awards.

Plain websites with good copy make money.

A website that makes money is never going to be the same one that wins awards.

[RECOMMENDED] 8 Reasons Excel is Better Than “Off-The-Shelf” Accounting Software

A few days ago, I encountered a small business owner speaking to a street vendor, trying to choose from about 5 different accounting software installation disks. The vendor was obviously not interested in helping the CEO make a choice.

Instead, he kept pushing for the man to buy as many disks as possible (at double the normal price), and then “go home to try out each one to make up your mind” – he said!

I was horrified, but had to keep my mouth shut after the vendor accused me of trying to “spoil business” for him.

The CEO went ahead and bought 2 of the disks (making the vendor look accusingly at me, as if to say I cost him the sales of the other 3) – but before leaving, he came up to me and asked “What did you mean when you said MS Excel can easily be automated to meet most of my needs as a small business user?

I replied by telling him that the MS Excel he used on his laptop had many powerful features/functions in its spreadsheet engine, in addition to a Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) development interface that can be used to incorporate custom automation into the custom workbooks he creates.

I ended by noting that virtually anything is possible with MS Excel, in the hands of someone with the right know-how – and that he could either hire such a person, or LEARN to become that kind of person.

When he pressed for more information, I gave him the URL to my Excel Heaven blog – asking him to click the Excel-VB apps link on the site menu.

My work on the web has NEVER been an ego trip. Instead my focus has always been on adding value to as many members of my target audience as possible.

That’s why I never hesitate to feature 3rd party writeups on this blog that I feel will benefit my readers/subscribers.

This Zero Cost Marketing Strategy Will Make Total Strangers Confidently Send You Money

If you’re like most people, you believe in spending money to make money in business – which is not a bad strategy. However, history attests to the fact that viable zero cost alternative ways exist to make money, if one would only learn to use them. In these times when advertising funds are harder to find, if you want to keep your profits up, you need to add “Marketing Without Advertising (MWA)” to your business promotion arsenal. Read on to learn more in this experience based article.

TIP: If you already practice MWA, I ask that you forgive me for being presumptuous. But then again, what exactly is it you do, that you believe qualifies to be called “Marketing Without Advertising”?

In the rest of this article I offer introductory insights, to guide any persons interesting in using MWA to promote products and services they offer.

First let me say I make no claims to knowing it all. I do not wish to create the impression that I have superior knowledge or monopoly of it.

However, my interactions both on and off the web with lots of persons engaged in business marketing at various levels, have consistently revealed to me that most of them lack a sound understanding.

I mean they do NOT know how to SUCCESSFULLY (and for the long term) promote the solutions they offer, to those who need it, without coming across as being too “pushy”.

For me, Marketing Without Advertising means: communicating the fact that a solution you offer can help your target audience in a manner that makes the latter feel you can help them solve a problem they wish to be rid off, and NOT that you’re just trying to get money off them.

Recall the “pushy salespersons” strategy in which sales personnel and entrepreneurs go after potential buyers they identify with die hard determination?

Yes – the one that often involves near literal arm twisting of the latter into buying-submission?

Well, none of that happens during the process of Marketing Without Advertising. So if you do THAT, you are definitely NOT practicing MWA!

In MWA…instead of a push mentality, a pull philosophy is adopted by the intending sales person/marketer. Rather than aim to pressure prospects to buy, emphasis is placed on providing valuable information and education in a no-strings-attached manner that inspires trust and confidence.

At that point the prospect tends to take ownership of the process and begins to push to get more specific details from the intending seller. By then the relationship tends to be one in which the seller is viewed as an expert authority with the reliable competence to provide a solution that addresses the buyer’s needs.

One of the most powerful tools for practicing MWA, based on my personal experiences, is information publishing (done via writing, where possible in combination with public speaking).

But I LOVE writing more because it allows you to leverage the potentially unlimited reach of the Internet.

Through that channel you can get your message considered by a global audience without being limited by distance.

This is especially important when you consider how public speaking requires that you get invited by an audience in a location that you can reach. Not all audiences and locations will be easily reachable in that manner.

But with writing, a variety of possibilities become available to you. All of them at more or less zero cost, when you choose to use the web.

You can write articles, case studies, white papers, eBooks, paperback/print books, magazines etc. The web offers myriad low to zero cost platforms you can use to achieve your marketing purpose.

However it takes some doing, and even more know-how to succeed with this approach.

Especially where it concerns knowing what to write, how to write it, to whom you will write it and when/where you will write it.

Believe it or not, the answers to each of the foregoing will often differ over time, and depending on what you’re trying to sell.

This is why you need to LEARN how to succeed at Marketing Without Advertising.

You need to read the works of those who have used it successfully, and who are willing to share their wisdom about how to get it right.

One good example is THIS writer – as are MANY of those from whose works I have learned over the past decade or so e.g. Michel Fortin, Burt Dubin, Dan Kennedy.

A proven way to establish yourself as an expert authority in the market you serve, so as to sell more, is to become a formally published author in your area of expertise.

Therefore if you really want to excel at MWA, you need to make getting published in as many ways as possible a major priority.

You need to get your original ideas published for sale to a global audience in both print (i.e. paperback/physical) as well as digital form

Today, it’s many times easier than it used to be. PC and Internet Technology have made it so much easier.

You can now ignore the brick and mortar publishers, with their prohibitive fees, and adopt instead the Print On Demand Publishing (POD) service provided by web based companies like www.lulu.com – where I’ve done what I recommend you do, since 2005.

A web based POD publishing company will typically be a Zero Cost publishing platform with global marketing reach, and multiple book contents delivery formats e.g. PDF, Kindle, and Print/paperback etc.

You pay nothing to get published in print or eBook format with them. They only make money when you do – and it’s your buyer that pays – NOT you!

Nothing beats marketing that yields income in form of monthly royalty payments!

In other words, even as you use your published work to command high profile marketplace attention from your target market, this system enables you earn income from sales of the books online.

I propose you aim to hit the ground running in January 2017, with www.yourname.com (?) and the rest of a custom Web Marketing System (WMS) I will build for you.

Your WMS will be a flagship multifaceted online presence branded to attract pre-qualified prospects you will offer high profile products and services to.

Your wealth of knowledge, insights, and experience can be monetized to offer a GUIDE BOOK of some sort for persons looking for solutions like those you offer.

Your target audience comprises people who currently seek RELIABLE providers of such solutions. They complain about wasting time with others they often end up discovering are not competent, or worse – are fraudulent.

Chances are however good that those who really need your help may not be able to tell you can “save them” just by seeing you/your photo, your flyer or your office!

If only they knew you were different. If only someone they trusted could tell them that YOU are not like the others – which you always deliver what you promise.

Sigh…if only they knew.

But they often will NOT know….that your knowledge and expertise is valuable and reliable.

However, once they trust you, those same people previously unwilling to trust, will gladly pay to have access to you.

I can help you create a platform via the web to make that happen for you on a regular basis. To the extent that total strangers will feel comfortable trusting you at first “contact”.

I mean complete strangers trust you enough to CONFIDENTLY send you money or hire you – like they have done with me for YEARS.

But they can discover that truth from progressive exposure to your MWA messages over time.

What makes this strategy great is that the written word can be accessed in various ways both on and off the web – especially online where most people today go to look for information and education.

Yep. Google.com and other search engines.

So, you just need to get your MWA messages found via those online search platforms, and you’ll be well on your way.

Of course, that will not be all.

Smart use of social media platforms, newsletter marketing, blog based publishing and other techniques used in intelligent combination is what will really deliver optimal marketing reach and impact that you need to make.

It’s NOT easy to do, but it can be done. I have been doing it with increasing success for years now, and I help clients do the same – using a custom WMS.

Those who are willing to do the hard work involved get the promised results.

If you did not know that truth before, take it from me NOW – if you want to insure yourself against failure in life.

Historical records dating back many centuries show clearly that a person with marketable ideas who lacks money can often find – if s/he persists long enough – success in using those ideas to make money and/or find success in any area of endeavour.

This is why we have in history today, legends about great people who rose from grace to grass, starting with nothing and building massive success in various fields. I do not need to mention examples. Too many abound – and I’m sure that in YOUR own society there are a few that come readily to your mind.

What irks me however, and which makes me write on this subject in this week’s issue of my newsletter is the manner in which so many people, especially well schooled people, continue to think and act without learning from the MANY examples of people succeeding in spite of the seeming handicap of a lack of money, lack of formal schooling, lack of connections etc.

These otherwise intelligent well schooled people see themselves achieving average success levels in comparison to others who lack their level of formal education and exposure, yet they refuse to take the pains to study those others to find out what makes them succeed better.

One would have expected that their “education” would make them more willing to indulge in ANALYZING success to find out how to make it happen for themselves at higher levels and with more predictability.

Instead what I see A LOT, especially in my part of the world, is that most of these schooled people are continually in denial. They seem to have an ego investment in NOT acknowledging that what they have seems not to have prepared them well enough to excel better than those who lack it.

Quite often I see them try to explain away or rationalize the otherwise undeniably exceptional successes of those less schooled or less exposed others. They would say things like “he was just lucky; it’s God’s grace etc”

The questions I always ask them include:

1. WHY can’t you get lucky like him/her?

2. What stops you from benefiting from God’s grace in the same manner as him/her?

3. Don’t you think you need to take a closer look at him/her to really identify and understand what s/he is doing that you may need to adopt as well?

Most times I get nothing but a dismissal of my questions and suggestions.

Little wonder that most of those guilty of behaving in the above manner rarely ever go on to achieve any notable successes in their personal or work lives.

Guess what?

I am well schooled, and continue to explore as many avenues as possible to improve my knowledge and education. However, I have found myself able to succeed much faster by dispensing with any arrogant notions about who I can learn from or acknowledge as knowing more than I do.

This has made it VERY easy for me to get close to those who I identify to be doing better, so I can shamelessly learn as much as I can from them.

That mental attitude has made me completely blind to the need to check for a person’s social or financial status in deciding whether or not to relate with him/her.

In addition, I have used my extensive study of books written by authentic achievers in various fields, to build myself up in terms of how I see challenges that come my way when I try to put what I learn from others into use.

The greatest lesson I’ve learned in the above process has been that, those who achieved their success by starting with nothing (e.g. growing their wealth from the ground up) NEVER let repeated setbacks, delays or disappointments stop them.

They simply kept going – and always stayed open to LEARNING from any authentic person(s) regardless of status, until they made it.

This insight has been the key to my ability to bounce back to success and reckoning after myriad visitations of adversity in every area of Endeavour I have ever ventured in my life. As an entrepreneur, it is the main reason I remain completely unstoppable – no matter what happens to me.

That’s why I thrive in hard as well as good economic times. If you want to be able to get similar results, I recommend you form the habit of doing the things I’ve described above in your life as well.

You will be pleasantly surprised by the results you get!

In addition to constantly challenging the status quo and influencing positive work changes, he built a reputation for using self-taught spreadsheet programming skills (starting with Lotus 1-2-3, and later moving to Excel Visual Basic) – in his spare time – to develop Automated Spreadsheet Applications to computerize manual report generation processes in the departments he worked. Over four(4) of his applications were adopted for brewery level reporting.

Tayo holds a B.Sc degree in Agricultural Extension Services from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, having graduated top of his class – with Second Class Upper Division honors – in 1992. He is an Associate Member of the UK Institute & Guild of Brewing, a 1997 National Finalist of the Nigerian Institute of Management’s(NIM) Young Managers’ competition, a Certified Psychometric Test Administrator for Psytech UK, innovator of Spontaneous Coaching for Self-Development™ (SCfS-D™), and Founder of the Self-Development Academy (SDAc).

TIP: The main thing to do is read the book at least 10 times cover to cover, OR until you’ve internalised and can recall blocks of text from it from memory.

Not everyone will be immediately ready to study, understand and adopt this book’s philosophy.
