[RECOMMENDED] PDF Report: Introduction of High Quality Cassava Flour (HQCF) into Nigeria’s Agricultural Landscape (True Story)

This report by Prof. Olufemi Martins Adesope (owner of www.omadesope.com and Publisher, Making Extension Services Work™ newsletter) discusses the Cassava crop, with regard to where and how it is grown.

It also goes further to shed light on when production of High Quality Cassava Flour (today used for making bread, cakes, chin-chin, doughnuts, pies etc) from Cassava tubers began in Nigeria.

PDF Report: Introduction of High Quality Cassava Flour (HQCF) into Nigeria’s Agricultural Landscape (True Story)

Cassava production in Nigeria keeps increasing regularly. This is because it is one of the most important crops and staple foods in Nigeria.

It is designated sometimes as Manioc Tapioca, Yucca.

In fact it has been designated again as the most popular staple crop in the African diet in places like Ghana, DRC, Nigeria, Brazil, Thailand – Cassava forms the basic staple in these various countries I’ve mentioned.

PII 066: There’ll be No Need to Force Kids to “Finish” School If They See MORE Formally Schooled People Doing Well Financially [Hint: 9 Questions That Indicate How Conventional Schooling Shortchanges Learners]

This week’s issue of my Performance Improvement Ideas (PII) newsletter features nine (9) key questions I strongly recommend every parent ponder seriously over, to accurately discern how well the schooling his/her kids get will prepare them to function as vocationally competent and financially independent adults in society.

The cartoon below, quotes Einstein, in illustrating the FACT that our kids (and us adults) ARE NOT not all wired to learn or achieve in the same way!

einstein

Here are some signs and symptoms apparent in today’s society that convince me most of our conventional schooling systems are NOT equipping learners to function as described above.

Young people who actively seek ways to get money off you without doing any work or adding any value to you. Adults who constantly scheme and plot to do the same thing.

Personnel in banks who manipulate the computerized systems in their workplaces to skim money off your bank balance, or apply illegal transaction charges to your account.

Telecom companies operatives who subscribe your mobile number to silly services you have no interest in, and/or deduct airtime from your phone for phantom services. These are a few examples of the kind of activities happening with ever increasing frequency in the Nigerian society.

Most of those people involved in doing the above naughty things are SCHOOLED people, often with at least University level education.

Yet they find it necessary to engage in crooked activities to make money for their companies and themselves.

Like I’ve said in a past article, schooled people who steal are manifestations of a cruel paradox.

I say this because we all know that we are told that if we want to end up well in life, all we need to do is go to school, get good grades and then get good jobs.

Sadly, what we see in society proves that many well schooled people who find good jobs with good companies, still go on to steal and cheat at work and in life.

That’s why they get sacked and sometimes sentenced to prison. It is why many of them demand and accept bribes where they work. Many MANY examples abound in the past and present history of Nigeria – as I am sure you, the reader, know!

But why do they do it? Why do well schooled people steal?

I’ve answered that question in an earlier article.

[See [Podcast] Real Reason Why Well Schooled People Commit Fraud (Tayo Solagbade’s “Difference Between Schooling & Education” Series)]

It’s because they do NOT know how to make money, or more money and they are AFRAID that the money that have is not (or will not be) enough.

You see, the schools did not teach them how to make money. Only how to work for money – as employees, trading time for money.

And that limits how much they can get. So when they want more, not knowing any better way, they often settle for crooked ways to get it.

Simply put therefore, conventional schooling shortchanges learners – but many do not know it!

The questions outlined below highlight glaring contradictions between what we are told “schooling” WILL deliver to learners, and the realities the learners end up facing upon graduation. Parents who truly love their kids will carefully study these questions and use the insights they gain to better guide their kids’ education.

  1. Why is it that girls willing to dance seductively and/or half-naked in TV musicals today in Nigeria can end up earning a better living – income wise especially – than those who choose to find jobs based on their school qualifications, or even those who become entrepreneurs? This happens not because the latter career options don’t work, but because Nigerian society the ladies have to operate in gives LESS reward for such “work” compared to the former.
  1. Why is it that some of the world’s most celebrated sports achievers are from dirt poor homes that saw sports as an outlet to escape poverty, compared to formal schooling?
  1. Why is it OKAY (and not child abuse) for people who lose their parents in their formative years or who were born orphans, to work in their free time – as “kids”  and young adults – to pay their way through school? I know persons who did that right here in Nigeria. I schooled with them!
  1. Why do schools not give financial education to kids when the teachers know that understanding how to make money in and out of paid employment is often a determinant of how well people do in adulthood? Especially when money and how much of it they have will tend to be the primary criterion on which they will be rated – regardless of any other positive qualities they possess?
  1. Why don’t schools teach selling/self marketing skills when the ability to sell and sell one’s self will be crucial to the ability of the student to achieve desired progress in or out of paid employment AFTER s/he completes schooling?
  1. If the products of Nigeria’s formal schooling systems were doing so well in the large numbers they are being turned out, then why do we have armies of them roaming the streets with certificates in hand, looking for non-existent jobs, while being described by potential employers as unemployable? Also, why do so few of those who do well in our schools ever get to be voted to make good things happen for us in public office, with their brilliance?
  1. If the products of our conventional schools were doing so well in the real world, we would not have such growing number of kids unwilling to do the hard work of studying to pass exams without cheating – Or would we?
  1. Why do we have kids who want the benefits that can accrue from having a qualification, but do not want to go through the required process of “working/studying” to earn it? Why do they so eagerly “game” the system, in connivance with parents, teachers and examiners – the latter being the supposed custodian of the educational system being so raped?
  1. Have you noticed that the entertainment industry does NOT need laws or adverts to make adults of all ages eager to learn what it takes to partake and succeed in it? Does it occur to anyone that youths with all kinds of academic qualifications enroll and succeed in Project Fame and other reality shows etc? In other words, their academic schooling rarely matters to their ability to excel in this area – so why don’t we just find those who thrive best at it, and train them as early as possible in their lives?

What is happening with all these contradictions they see in society today, is that our kids are being “taught” that being the most academically brilliant with the best grades does NOT matter as much as being willing to cut corners to get what you want.

They see what we do – and refuse to listen to what we say, because they know the latter is NOT true.

Evidence of this is seen in the fact that our TV/Radio and newspapers give superior coverage to news about celebrities in various fields that are often drop outs or poorly schooled.

Out kids also see politicians accused of fraud walking free despite countless visits to courts – and even those who serve jail sentences for stealing being rewarded on their return with heroic welcomes!

While that is happening, they encounter honest and hardworking adults daily – including their own teachers – who never get rich or famous, despite being well schooled! And they also see those who chose to follow their own paths in life, rather than go the conventional schooling route, doing a whole lot better than schooled persons.

It is the mix of all the above that makes schooling so unattractive for kids over time, especially as they grow older – and that is why some choose to drop out.

If truth be told, would one need to force kids to study hard or attend school, like we did in our time, if they saw formally schooled people doing well in large numbers in society?

Case study: Shina Peter told his mum at age 8, that he no longer wished to attend school, choosing instead to live with and apprentice under Ebenezer Obey, so as to pursue his passion of learning to play the Guitar/music.

In a recent (2015) interview, Shina Peters was asked if he regretted not getting a formal education. He replied saying he had no regrets and that he had achieved so much success professionally and financially pursuing his dream as a self-taught musician that he employed well schooled persons, including PhD holders.

Now, THAT is a happy and fulfilled man speaking his mind right there. I believe BEING HAPPY AND FULFILLED is what matters most in life, and each of us as parents need to guide our kids to achieve that end.

Shina is NOT alone. There are  many like him. Their examples prove schooling is NOT an end in itself. It is a means to an end – the end being each person’s definition of happiness and fulfillment.

A person’s creative genius is a crucial ingredient needed to achieve that optimal state of being.

Any schooling system that does NOT enhance the learner’s ability to put that genius to use in achieving that state is NOT healthy for the child.

You have an obligation as a parent to challenge your society to do that for your child. If it does not, then you have a duty to find a way to fill in the gap created and if any damage is being done to your kid’s creativity, you must take steps to stop it.

This is what I have been doing for my kids, and I will continue to do it for them, showing them what matters, until I am sure they can carry on by themselves, taking necessary protective measures to preserve their creative genius.

What is your child’s genius? Do you know?

Many parents do NOT know that schooling is a means to an end, and NOT an end in itself.

That’s why they focus so much on “schooling” their kids, and pay little or no attention to EDUCATING their kids in readiness for real world relevant success outside school.

This is why we have so many people who leave school with brilliant grades and go on to struggle to make impact in life.

It is why (as Robert Kiyosaki notes in his book) we see C students becoming more successful and employing A students after they all leave school.

It is also why we see UNSCHOOLED persons or school drop outs doing far better in the real world than their schooled counterparts.

I argue, as a Best Practice Parenting Advocate, that a parent’s NUMBER ONE role in giving his/her child an education is NOT to pay school fees, uniforms, textbooks etc. Neither is it to pay for access to summer school and exams.

RELATED ARTICLE: Education is not ‘for’ anything – it is an end in itself –  by Dennis Hayes of Independent.co.uk | Thursday 4 October 2012 15:58

The knowledge and understanding of subjects has no moral purpose. It may lead to discontent.

Education is not about ‘preparation for life’. Nor is testing about ‘preparation for the tests of life’.  Education is not ‘about’ anything except education. Debates, lectures and discussions with the title ‘What is education for?’ are popular, but they embody an instrumental mistake about the nature of education: education is not for anything. It is an end in itself. If all the problems of economic and social life were solved and people did not even have to work, we would still seek knowledge. This is encapsulated in Socrates’ vision of eternal life as an endless series of conversations and debates with the greatest thinkers.

Do You Want to Make Your Spreadsheet Application Do Everything You want and Nothing You Don’t?

[This article is based on the contents of a one page flyer I used to promote the pavement pounding version of my Excel-VB Solutions Development service in my startup years back in 2005 = see photo below!]

flyer-xlh-2005

I’ve tweaked it a little to include details relevant to the 100% web based operation I run today.

What do you currently do with spreadsheets that you wish you could do FASTER, MORE ACCURATELY and with LESS EFFORT than you currently do?

My name is Tayo Solagbade – Creator of the Excel Heaven Visual Basic Automation Club and Competition

I work with individuals and businesses/organizations to develop Custom, Pre-programmed Excel-Visual Basic Applications with Graphical User Interfaces that make using Excel to do what you do less cumbersome.

If you would like me to work with you, to make that spreadsheet or workbook easier to use and more accurate in the output it returns, click here to contact me today.

Alternatively…

You can watch my FREE Home Study tutorial videos and Screenshot demonstration user guide videos for some of my commercial quality spreadsheet applications at www.excelheaven.tayosolagbade.com or www.excelheaven.biz

You will notice from doing so that I how I put use intelligent and creative coding to and design, to put smart customization and POWER at the user’s mouse tips, in the solutions I develop.

Don’t Be Quick to Assume You’ve Seen This Before!

For the first 2 to 4 years after I started out in 2002, when the market for solutions of this kind were practically non-existent in Nigeria, 99% of the time, those I introduced to my work often readily assumed they knew what I was talking about i.e. especially when they heard the word “automation”

That is UNTIL they saw a demo of one of the real life software I offered for sale, and a video of an elaborate home study tutorial I’d created for an advanced learner I’d coached

That was why my VERY first client in 2004 paid me N100k (about $600 USD) at the time, to have me develop a custom Excel-VB driven application branded with his company’s logo and other details, for a high profile client – and Oil Exploration company.

My client was so convinced of my ability to deliver, that he paid the entire amount (i.e. 100%) upfront.

And I DID deliver – within the agreed TEN (10) days of starting the job.

Since then, I’ve gone on to do even bigger jobs for clients in various markets that paid more than twice that amount.

Today, I build and scll custom apps to meet the needs of clients -and get paid for doing so by clients within and outside Africa – especially Farm Business Owners. One of my most popular ready-to-use products for Farm CEOs earns me about the same amount I used to get paid to BUILD apps for clients when I first started out.

I CAN HELP YOU SAVE MONEY, TIME AND EFFORT!

I have a vision to help individuals and businesses get maximum returns from using Microsoft Excel in their work.

With my help, you/your organization might just be able to save money your spend to the tune of many thousands, tens of thousands and even hundreds of thousands, that you could otherwise spend on an EXPENSIVE commercial off-the-shelf application that could end up not meeting all the peculiar needs of your team members/business.

Why not contact me and see if I can WORK WITH YOU via my remote web based service, to develop an application that does all the things you would like to do – at an affordable price.

Incidentally, I also support train and coach in Advanced Excel and ExcelVB Programming.

In fact, I run an Excel Heaven Visual Basic Automation Coaching club which caters for business users and kids.

Two of Tayo Solagbade’s Farm Business Ideas Club Members Are Now Licensed to Resell my Products and Keep ALL of the Money They Make [See Formal Notification Letter Inside, & ALSO LEARN WHY YOU NEED TO BUILD A MAILING LIST IF YOU WANT TO MAKE MONEY FROM YOUR WEBSITE].

A few weeks ago, I sent emails to members of my Farm Business Ideas club offering a 100% affiliate partnership license allowing to sell 3 of my products and keep ANY money they make.

The offer is now ended. Two Farm CEOs signed up for payment in installments , and have now completed it (see notification letter shown below – names removed for privacy)

From today, I begin supporting them to deliver the 3 products to ANY buyers they find in their respective states.

But why would I give them a license to sell my products and keep ALL the money they make, even as I provide ALL the support to their buyers, you may wonder?

Well, that’s because I KNOW the value that will accrue to me in the long term from doing that.

That is in addition to the multidimensional income generating benefits I’ve already obtained from interacting with this group of clients.

You see, I KNOW for a fact that they are the reason I have been able to grow my brand, as a Location Independent Multipreneur, to what it is today – and NOT the casual visitor who passes by my site every now and then!

These CEOs on my mailing list – especially those who have PAID me for at least one of the solutions I offer, are the reason I succeed.

I’ve been saying it for years in my writing, and I’ll say it here again:

If you want to succeed in using the Internet to generate sales leads you can convert, you NEED TO BUILD A MAILING LIST.

A smart US based expert once wrote in an article I read over 10 years ago: THE MONEY IS IN THE LIST.

He knew what he was talking about, My experiences and achievements as one who earns income online confirm it!

Don’t put your hope or faith in Google or other search engine driven traffic.

If you do, you’re likely to end up with twisted insides as you try to make quick enough adjustments to your online marketing, to deal with fluctuations in traffic coming to you, as Google change their algorithms every now and then!

You’ll simply find yourself wondering why visits suddenly drop sharply, even though you’re still doing the same thing you’ve always done.

Meanwhile, when that happens, if you have a sales system that depends on the volume of traffic you get from that channel, the likely implication is that the income that accrues to you will also drop.

Sometimes that little change from the search engine end could result in a multiplier effect that affects you in other COSTLY ways you may not immediately anticipate.

This is why it’s always so much safer, smarter and ultimately more profitable, to invest your quality time, effort and money in converting as much of the traffic as may come to you at any point in time, into sales leads or what is called Prequalified Prospects.

People who indicate by reaching out to you (e.g. by subscribing or send a web form message), that they are INTERESTED in what you offer.

Once you have them in your database, and so long as you keep creating response generating web content to make more people WILLINGLY add themselves to your database (some do this by calling me up and ultimately texting me their full details lol!), no amount on search engine traffic fluctuations will be enough to bother you.

I say the above, of course, on the assumption that you know what to do with a mailing list database to make money.

Ever heard of Mailing List Database Mining?

That kind of “mining” is what you CAN do to make money even if your website is down, like mine (TayoSolagbade.com) was for about 40 hours earlier this week. It’s why I never really fret about looking for traffic, like some people do.

I aim instead to increase my Website Conversion Ratio (WCR).

If you do not know about mailing list database mining, then you’re WASTING your money online!

If you do not know why monitoring and working to INCREASE your WCR is more important than fretting over so called “traffic” to your site, especially when you do NOT sell “popular” or conventional products, or worse, you are a custom service provider, then you really need help.

Believe me when I say that I make more money from “mining” my mailing list database than I do from sales coming as a result of search engine driven traffic. I am able to do this by driving up my WCR to bring the right kinds of people in contact with me.

Click here to let me know you’d like to learn more about how to do the above, to make money from your website with peace of mind and confidence!

For now, below is a screenshot of the notification letter I sent to two long term clients, who as members of my Farm Business Ideas club have INVESTED so much in various solutions I offer, that I decided to come up with an income generating system to reward them.

Dear (Farm CEO name removed)

SUBJECT:Congratulations – You are a 100% Affiliate Partner of my Best Practice Farm Biz Support Centre (FBSC)™

100-pct-affiliatelicense

This is one of the ways I’m giving back to those who helped me get where I am today. If they had doubted me, I would not have been able to grow like I have done.

I think we need more people like them in Nigeria/Africa i.e. those who will not wait to see you do it all before they decide to put money where their mouths are, to invest in what you tell them is possible!

Nigerian Banks Need to Put Customers First and Stop Thinking Money Only [Hint – TayoSolagbade.com is BACK Online: After being let down BADLY by my bank, an individual Referred to me by a TRUSTED Farm CEO client, uses his Dollar Card to enable me pay for my website’s hosting renewal!]

TayoSolagbade.com is back online! [In case you didn’t know it went offline, read the story at the bottom of this piece]

As the late Nigerian Yoruba musician Orlando Owo once sang “What has happened has happened”, I accept this latest experience of my website suffering avoidable downtime of about 40 hours, as yet another lesson to guide me in deciding who to trust, when and for what.

The WHO could be a person, or group of people or organisation. In this case, it was an organisation. But I’m done talking about it (see text of Facebook update I did yesterday about it).

What I will say here though is that it was VERY inconsiderate of the bank to NOT go out of their way to alert – repeatedly too! – ALL their card users who they could see (from their records) routinely use the Naira cards that got roundly declined by Paypal.

Instead they quielty left us to discover it individually – even when it meant potentiallt serious damage to perception of our brands.

I think a Farm CEO client of mine who called me today, and got to know about it, got it right when he said:

“They probably chose not to broadcast the news about  Paypal discontinuing use of their cards, because they felt it would be a dent  on their image!”

My response was:

“So they were more concerned about protecting their image than they were about protectingn their customers’ brands, that PAY for them to maintain that so called image?!”

That’s a typically Nigerian warped attitude to customer service.

Now don’t get me wrong.

Nobody is asking them to commit brand suicide by announcing a setback that makes them look bad, compared to rivals.

My argument is that:

1. they could, at the least, have discretely sent us email or SMS messages WARNING us that the NAIRA cards no longer worked, and advising us on new platforms to switch to.

2. Even if they did not want to use email or SMS, they could have gotten our individual account managers to check our profiles and call us up to brief us on this development which had such serious implications for our business lives.

I say this as one who lives a 100% digital lifestyle.

Virtually everything I do is based on the web, so I depend HEAVILY on the use of my card.

What I did not know was that the fact that the card still worked locally, did not mean it still worked everywhere else, especially internationally.

After 5 years of depending on my NAIRA card, and having it work perfectly for me both on and off the web, just as the bank had assured in various promotional messages, how could I imagine such an extreme reversal of functionalities could occur?!

Least of all to me – someone with so many people I serve using my ability to make payments for solutions they benefit through me!!

I am deeply disappointed that GT bank could let this kind of experience happen to ANY of her customers.

They need to do better in future.

They MUST learn to think and act with MAJOR Emotional Intelligence in handing the affairs of their clients – especially those vulnerable to mishaps of this nature, due to Nigeria’s shaky Naira exchange regimen.

In other words, they need to put themselves in the shoes of their customers – and TRY hard to feel what their customers feel, so they know what matters to EACH one and then act to help them on the basis of insights gained.

When you do that, your customers are more likely to do better, and YOU will ultimately benefit!

For now, I’ve taken a cue from what has happened, and I will henceforth control my bragging about what can or cannot go wrong with their web based solutions. Sorry.

Below: Text of Facebook status update I published yesterday, on my wall, after I’d established the cause of my inability to make renewal payment for hosting of my domains…

Choi!

See as GT just fall my hand online today. Na wa O. No wonder they say never put your trust in any man – or in my case: in any BANK lol!

Come see as yours truly begin dey do investigative phone calling to find another way to make payment for web hosting renewal.

After many failed phone conversations – I’ve finally found someone (referred by a client) who has a Dollar card and is willing to help me fund my reseller account online.

But the price is steep. To transfer the $34 I need to my reseller account, I have to pay a total of $45 USD.

I don’t mind that however.

Instead what really irks me is that I NEVER got email or SMS from GT alerting me to the fact that Paypal no longer recognised their Naira Mastercard. They left me to discover it at the point of renewal!

As a result, TayoSolagbade.com is now currently offline – due to my inability to fund my hosting account to renew it for another year.

Even worse is the fact that a client’s website may also go down by Midnight today – as the alternative payment option I’ve found is not likely to be active before tomorrow.

This is so not cool, as the Americans would say. Over here we say: Dis wan na yawa O!

But here’s the irony:

As I type these words a GT bank SMS has already popped into my message inbox alerting me to the multiple benefits of getting myself a GT bank Dollar Mastercard that has no lirc-dave-fbk-shotmits!

Isn’t it funny how they so readily thought to send that, but never thought it necessary to warn me that the Naira card I was depending on would no longer work for most purposes I’d gotten used to using it for?

This is a reflection of the quality of minds manning the areas where the above are handled in GT.

I know some great GT bank personnel. Very diligent about doing their work.

But I believe there are many more who do not put their hearts into the work they do.

They do not care how their lack of proactiveness hurts the client or his/her business. They only care about themselves and looking good on the job!

A sad shame.

Anway, work continues for me. I’ve been down this website downtime road more times than I care to remember. No be today. Each time I simply focus on finding a viable solution and putting it to use.

That’s what matters most: Kicking adversity out of the way so as to move forward to newer and better things!

The 4 plus minute video clip linked below features a presenter engaged in a debate of sorts with an audience member, who expressed disagreement with some things she (the presenter) had said about Global Warming.

logic-debate

In making her point, the audience member argued saying 98% of scientists held a particular view she supported, on the issue.

That led the presenter to embark on what I consider a most illuminating exposition on how logic works, and why the use of expressions like 98% cannot be done without basis.

I share the transcript excerpts below, because I believe MANY of us make the mistake she (I’ll call her “Logic-Lady”) points out here, when we want to drive home our points. And we need to know we are NOT proved right by it!

But let’s just look at what she said…it’s really worthwhile.

So she said that 98% of scientists agree that global warming is a major problem

Everyone in this room has gone to college, so you’re gonna like the logic of this.

If we say 98% of something, there must be a 100%. So somewhere there must be a list. There must be a list of all the scientists that exist.

My first challenge to this lady is to give me the list of all the scientists that exists in America, in the world, because if they do, that is how you can use the word 98 percent.

If there isn’t a definitive list, there is no such thing as 98 percent

Number 1 – logic!

Number 2: Science does not proceed by consensus. Science is not democratic!

At one time in history, it was the consensus that the earth was flat. Everyone believed in that. Everyone agreed on that. One man said that THAT was not true.

Anybody who says to you “The majority agree with it so it’s true, is not a scientist.”

I don’t know what they are, but they are not a scientist!

The laws of gravity do not get agreed by a consensus, by a vote, by a democracy.

Science is not democratic. Science is about truth.

One person can be correct

The person who quotes 98% of scientists is someone who knows you’re already losing.

So they are sung “illogic”.

98% of all scientists – unless you have an index of all scientists.

It doesn’t really matter how big the list is – it doesn’t  matter!

Because the truth is the truth. It’s not done by majority.

We can’t all vote in this room about the laws of physics and then make it right.

Click HERE to download the full video and listen to the rest of the debate they had, which ended with the logic-lady “educating” her counterpart about how the American experiment compared to the European experiment.

How can we use what she has taught us here?

I say that each of us in our field must realize that since science is based on truth, and ONE person can be right, then IT COULD BE US, as individuals in our respective fields of specialization.

In my case, I can relate to this in several ways.

One way has to do with my decision to commence offering custom spreadsheet software development services in the Nigerian/African market.

I had no role models o emulate, and no one I approached, in computer or business schools, saw any value in what I was trying to do. Business owners initially asked “Who is going to pay you for that?”.

I also got routinely mocked by those who knew what I was trying to do, during the times when I was still struggling to create my niche market in Nigeria.

Today, I enjoy name/brand recognition as a trusted provider of unique custom Excel-VB driven software to buyers in and out of Africa.

Those who told me it could only work in America, and who kept telling me to go do something else know better today.

So, I was right, but I had to act with faith and determination, coupled with relentless persistence to SHOW that I was. And in so doing, I proved that the many pointed opinions voiced by individuals and groups, to me, about the workability of my idea of selling automated workbooks to people in Nigeria, were wrong.

One needs to remember the words of this lady, and the quotes I started this piece with, which are reproduced below, if/when we find ourselves having to consider going a route no one else seems willing to go.

Anatole France, the shipping magnate once said:

“If fifty million people say a foolish thing, it is still a foolish thing.”

Several years ago, I coined the following quote on the same theme:

“Some people make the mistake of equating consensus with truth. That you, and others who think like you, agree among yourselves that a centipede is a millipede wearing a metal coat, will not make the centipede become a millipede.” – Tayo Solagbade

Many people have difficulty being objective in their views about issues, so they struggle to employ logic. This is because a biased mind cannot produce logical reasoning!

The Logic-Lady’s above stated explanations about science as it relates to logical reasoning is VERY relevant to our realities as individuals in society.

Today, there are too many people unwilling to apply critical thinking and logic in their daily interactions. As a result, they depend on group-thinking, whereby they force their narrow views down other people’s throats by using the power of numbers and consensus e.g those who share similar views gang up and overshadow others who may actually have better ideas to offer.

What you know or the experience based insights you have could be telling you something that others may not easily see or hear.

You owe yourself, and the rest of society to NOT let yourself be intimidated into silence or inaction by consensus wielding individuals or groups.

That’s what the man who showed us all that the earth was not flat did. He spoke out, and stuck to his argument, even though he was the only one.

You can do the same!

To Build a Society of Discerning Adults, Whose Leaders Cannot Fool. We MUST Teach Our Kids Critical Thinking and Logic [A List of Websites That Can Help Willing Parents]

Nigeria today struggles to get itself out of poor leadership and corruption driven rot, because  too much poor quality thinking, and reasoning is allowed to prevail in most (NOT ALL) of the decision making levels of her leadership, as well as amongst the larger majority of the followership.

I’ve said the foregoing countless times in speaking and in my writing.

Ours is a nation that has produced MANY great minds who today have made their marks as achievers in their professional fields internationally, but who chose to use their success to play (often informal) leadership roles aimed at moving the nation in the direction of sustainable progress and advancement.

I know most of us can readily recall more than a few, but I have certain role models in mind like Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinka, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Gani Fawehinmi (and others like them).

These achievers established themselves as shrewdly analytical thinkers with a knack for refusing to be hoodwinked by anyone – least of all poor thinking political leaders!

The last thing you could dream of catching them doing would be playing the psycophancy, tribalism or nepotism game. You also could certainly not depend on them to adopt illogical reasoning or depend on sentiments in coming up with their views of a way forward on any matter.

Indeed they were unrepentantly diligent at dishing out unapologetically blunt and truthful opinions on any subject. And this endeared them to the larger majority.

But most endearing was their willingness to walk their talk!

Sadly, today in everyday Nigeria, intelligent people who try to think critically and act based on intelligent logical tend to be an endangered species, and often get attacked or verbally pounded into silence by “group-thinking” mobs of often insecure others.

This is perhaps why we have much fewer people willing to step out into the limelight to play similar roles to the above mentioned heroes. Most Nigerians who fit that mould – rightly – fear that they stand to lose more than there is to gain, in today’s Nigeria, than was the case in Achebe and Soyinka’s Nigeria!

This is a major reason why we have such a paradoxical society, filled with mind boggling contradictions of human behavior.

It is is why “illogic” seems to sit so well here!

Those willing to adopt the position of logical thinkers are few. Too few. And many would rather not be known publicly.

As a result, poor thinkers have taken centre stage in Nigeria – and they use their growing influence to allow ONLY others like themselves to get through.

They know that is the only way to keep those who can expose their ineptitude OUT.

But societies that experience sustained and progressive advancement, NEVER allow people with poor reasoning capacities to LEAD her!

And they certainly do NOT permit the voting population to grow into a mass of illogical thinkers who let bias and sentiments get the better of their judgment.

If our fortunes as a nation are to change for the better, we will need to start building “a Society of Discerning Adults, Whose Leaders Cannot Fool. We MUST Teach Our Kids Critical Thinking and Logic”.

I offer below a list of websites I recently compiled, that offer guidance for parents and other adults willing to do what it needed for their kids – and even themselves as well!

Teaching critical thinking? You might wonder if kids will work it out for themselves.

After all, lots of smart people have managed to think logically without formal instruction in logic. Moreover, studies show that kids become better learners when they are forced to explain how they solve problems. So maybe kids will discover principles of logic spontaneously, as they discuss their ideas with others.

But research hints at something else, too.

2. Critical Thinking: How to Grow Your Child’s Mind

What kind of thinker is your child?  Does he believe everything on TV?  Does she always figure out how to get what she wants?

Does he ask questions?  Does she go along with what her friends suggest?  You can help develop your child’s critical thinking skills by learning a few key guidelines!

Whether your child is just starting summer vacation or in the midst of the school year, parents can help keep minds active in fun ways. Critical thinking skills don’t fully develop until adolescence, but the foundations for good thinking develop in younger children.

3, Teach Your Kids Logic With An Illustrated Book of Bad Arguments

In our homeschooling, I teach Logic as a separate, stand-alone subject, in addition to working it into other topics whenever possible. But even if your kids go to conventional schools, it’s important (and great fun!) to teach Logic at home. Teaching our kids to think critically about what they see, hear, and read is key to guiding them into becoming adults who think for themselves.

4. Teaching Logic & Critical Thinking to Your Kids

Critical thinking skills are skills that children (and adults) need to learn to be able to solve problems. This includes analyzing and evaluating information that is provided, whether that information is through observation, experience or communication. The core of critical thinking is being responsive to information and not just accepting it. Questioning is the most important part of critical thinking. It is a part of scientific, mathematical, historical, economic and philosophical thinking, all of which are necessary for the future development of our society. Here are a few ways to teach critical thinking that can be used whether you are a teacher or a parent.

5. Logic: The Right Use of Reason in the Inquiry After Truth

As a child of Puritan parents, it is not surprising that Isaac Watts was greatly concerned about people s ability to think clearly. Whether a man was studying for the ministry or any other of the sciences, the ability to reason rightly was of utmost importance. Watts s work on logic and reason became a standard textbook for nearly 200 years, being used in such schools as Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, and Yale. In Logic, Watts address proper thinking under the four basic functions of the human mind: perception, judgment, reasoning, and disposition. In part one,

6. PROBLEM SOLVING ACTIVITIES: HOW TO DEVELOP CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS IN KIDS

Learning to think critically may be one of the most important skills that today’s children will need for the future. Ellen Galinsky, author of Mind in the Making, includes critical thinking on her list of the seven essential life skills needed by every child. In today’s global and rapidly changing world, children need to be able to do much more than repeat a list of facts; they need to be critical thinkers who can make sense of information, analyze, compare, contrast, make inferences, and generate higher order thinking skills.
Exercises to Improve Your Child’s Critical Thinking Skills

7. How to teach all students to think critically

All first year students at the University of Technology Sydney could soon be required to take a compulsory maths course in an attempt to give them some numerical thinking skills.

The new course would be an elective next year and mandatory in 2016 with the university’s deputy vice-chancellor for education and students Shirley Alexander saying the aim is to give students some maths “critical thinking” skills.

This is a worthwhile goal, but what about critical thinking in general?

8, Critical Thinking Activities for Kids

Kids are open and willing to learn new fundamental skills as long as they are taught in a fun and entertaining manner. JumpStart’s critical thinking activities are therefore a great way to engage students and encourage critical thinking and logical reasoning skills in them!

[RECOMMENDED] FAO: ‘Promising’ cassava flour can drastically cut costs for bakers

Since late last year, I’ve been developing and implementing a custom Web Marketing System for a Farm Business Support Professional (a Professor in one of the nation’s leading universities) who travels locally and internationally to support Farm Businesses and Stakeholder groups by facilitating learning events.

Apart from capacity building, one of the key areas of focus this real world focused academic offers valuable support to players in the farm business sector across Africa, is Agribusiness Vocational Skills development training.

In that regard, this gentleman continues to impress me with his demonstrated hands-on proficiency in very practical vocations. A good example is the use of agricultural food products in making snacks.

But one particular area I’ve been most excited to see his work has been that relating to the use of High Quality Cassava Flour (HQCF) as a replacement for more expensive conventional wheat flour in baking of bread, and snacks like doughnuts, pies and chin-chin.

For those who do not know it, HQCF is costs about 50% less than wheat flour. Yet, continuing research and trials are showing that it has the potential to deliver similar benefits in the baking and snacks foods production chain that wheat flour currently deliver.

More people need to be made aware of what HQCF can do. We grow Cassava all over this continent. If more of us embrace the production of HQCF from Cassava that we grow, and we make use of it in larger amounts in place of Wheat, the implication for savings of scarce Forex resources are huge.

Reports have it that Ghana has long established itself as a leader in pursuit of this goal and is doing quite well.

I share the report from the FAO below, in the first of many efforts I will be making to create more awareness about this opportunity, out here, for more of us to follow up.

This is why I’m supporting my client with various promotional resources, so he can get increased marketing exposure for the training workshop on use of HQCF for snacks production that he offers.

FAO: ‘Promising’ cassava flour can drastically cut costs for bakers

By Kacey Culliney , 31-May-2013

Flour made from cassava can be up to half the price of regular wheat flour, holding great promise for bakers amid commodity volatility, says the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
