[RECOMMENDED] This Google spreadsheets guru makes $4,000 a month on online courses
Many accountants and finance professionals (especially in this part of the world) fail to realize that they massively shortchange themselves by failing to develop spreadsheet programming skills, which can boost their ability to serve clients – and make a LOT more money!
This true story is what I consider a “Wake Up Call” for such people…
Here’s an excerpt/preview – ending with a link to the full report:
This Google spreadsheets guru makes $4,000 a month on online courses
“The clients would have huge amounts of data,” he said. “We would be sitting between the clients and the lawyers to try to interpret their data and understand what was happening with the transactions and the finances. So all my time was working with data sets in Excel, and as the datasets started getting larger and larger we started using SQL,” a programming language used to manage data. Slowly but surely, Collins began expanding his programming skills as he learned to write SQL queries in order to manipulate the data. He also started dabbling in VBA, another programming language that allows you to build applications within Excel.”
PII 080: To Make More Money, You Don’t Need to Solve ALL Problems for ALL People [True Stories Incl. Excerpts from Email Feedback by a Foreign Farm Project Manager Client About Tayo Solagbade’s Excel-VB Ration Formulator]
In this issue of my Performance Improvement Ideas (PII) newsletter, I share excerpts from email feedback sent to me few years ago, by the Project Manager of a Canada based religious organization that operates a large farm operation to feed its members.
Over a period of weeks, this gentleman sent email messages (reproduced with his permission) in which he explained the thinking that led his organization to choose my Excel-VB Ration Formulator, over several others they had evaluated. And he also shared the results they got in using my app afterwards.
I’ve had that happen to me several times i.e. prospects choosing to sign up for my product or service, even after reviewing others on offer elsewhere…

And sometimes the other party was much bigger.
A good example was a web design company whose marketing team (dressed in suits and driven in a chauffeured car) had delivered a presentation a day before I stopped over at the office of a Lagos based real estate firm’s CEO.
About 30 minutes after I’d spoken with one of the managers, I got an appointment to see the CEO the next morning.
By the end of that week, I’d picked up a check for 100% advance payment (of an amount ABOVE what the web design company had asked!) to build what I call a Web Marketing System (WMS) – on their then defunct web hosting account.
The manager later told me the CEO said he’d chosen me because (unlike the web design team) my presentation used language that they were able to understand (e.g. free from technical jargon), and that I gave practical examples of tangible, measurable benefits the solution I offered would deliver to them.
Going back to my story about the Canadian Farm Project Manager: Below are excerpts from some of the first messages he sent me…
Notice how he points out the fact that nutrition experts were no longer willing to help them beyond a certain point – due to regulatory requirements about ingredients that could be used
But they were the ones to consume what they grew, so they knew those rules did not apply in their case. However, since solutions available had those restrictions built in, they needed to find one that gave them the freedom to use ANY ingredients they wished…and that were what led them to discover my Ration Formulator:
“…we raise cows, pigs, chicken, sheep, thus we get milk, eggs and meat for our Mother House and surrounding missions.
We tend to produce our own grain and vegetables. This year we have reorganized our grain management so to have better means of cleaning grain, storing it, mixing feed for our animals…
We had help from professionals in this matter.
But prices of grain has gone up so much that it became necessary to grow our own so to eventually make our own feed.
As for an example, soy is the number one source of protein here in Canada. All animal dietitians will include soy in their ingredients.
But soy is not easy to grow, and is very expensive to buy. We tend to go without it.
To do so, we compensate with peas we grow and which contain a good protein percentage (20-24%), but less than soy (48%).
From this point on, dietitians don’t want to help anymore.
The difference between us and their usual customers consists in the reason for raising animals. Most people aim production, we raise animals for our own survival, a very similar goal as most farmers in Nigeria, I suppose.
This is why I think your (Excel- VB driven Ration Formulator) will come in handy.
I hope it will help us balance feed rations to the best our means and needs.” – Ronald
V.* (Surname removed for privacy).
Below: Screenshots of excerpts from follow up emails by the c, which I published (with his permission) in an international agribusiness paper I got paid to write.
The information (Father) Ronald shared in his messages shows people WILL gladly buy a SOLUTION (to THE problem they want to solve) that suits their peculiar needs, over any other that may be available.
And they generally will NOT mind where that solution comes from.
For instance, when he called me on my mobile line for the first time, he made a point of telling me that he knew I was Nigerian and that I was in Nigeria, which he was aware of being “famous” for Internet fraud…BUT that he had watched my video demonstration, and was convinced that if he sent me money, I would NOT cheat him!
I was quite impressed by his attitude – so much so, that I later wrote an article that paid tribute of sorts to him for his “courage” and willingness to take a leap of faith to buy from me!
His action was especially noteworthy since I knew many other prospects from outside Africa (e.g. Mexico, USA etc) who had reached out to me in a similar manner via email only to go incommunicado, after I replied with my email signature indicating my nationality/location!
The above example proves you can make more money by identifying what is missing from existing solutions to a problem you know people NEED to be rid off, and filling those gaps with yours, in a way that they can READILY appreciate.
Once you do that, getting them to buy will take MUCH less effort – and you will make much more money as a result.
Final Words: It’s important to adopt the right mental attitude towards creating solutions for your target audience
Rather than wish or act to get rid of potential competitors, be they big or small, experience has taught me it’s wiser to USE them to LEARN What you need to do better, to meet the FELT need(s) of your target audience.
In other words, I’m saying the key to selling MORE is to: Create Solutions That Help Buyers Overcome Limitations Your Competitors Miss.
If you do that, and deliver your derived solution with diligent customer service that ensures your buyers ALWAYS get MORE value than they pay for, you WILL make more money doing what you do.
This implies that one does NOT need to develop a solution that is a CURE ALL, or does everything people could possibly want. Quite often, that ends up being a needless waste of time and effort!
The above insight is what enables me continue succeeding, regardless of adversity, in providing my target audience with Best Practice Farm Business Support Solutions, Web Marketing Systems Development, as well as Custom Excel-VB Software Creation & Sales.
I recommend you adopt a similar strategy if you want to attract similar rewards for your efforts!

The FARM CEO (Issue 91): Funding available for innovative business ideas | THE NEXT GENERATION IN AFRICAN AGRICULTURE
This week’s issue of The Farm CEO features a funding opportunity for African business owners and a report about how TechnoServe’s STRYDE program is helping more young Africans connect with agriculture.
1. Funding available for innovative business ideas
African entrepreneurs have the opportunity to receive funding for their business ideas by entering one of the AECF’s competitions.
What is the AECF?
The Africa Enterprise Challenge Fund (AECF) is a US$100m private sector fund, backed by some of the biggest names in development finance and hosted by the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA). Our aim is to encourage private sector companies to compete for investment support for their new and innovative business ideas.
The AECF is a competition, open only to for-profit private companies which are starting, or intend to start, new ventures in specific fields. Companies are invited to submit proposals outlining their business idea or concept for funding.
Which ideas does the AECF support?
2. THE NEXT GENERATION IN AFRICAN AGRICULTURE
A young Kenyan farming entrepreneur demonstrates why youth are critical to transforming agriculture and ensuring food security in Africa.
Nickson Muthuri, 24, is having a banner year.
Today, he is graduating from Egerton University in Njoro, Kenya, with a bachelor’s degree in economics and sociology.
Last week, Nickson traveled to the United States for the first time, speaking about youth in African agriculture at events with Harvard University’s PAPSAC Food Policy Group, the Partnership to Cut Hunger and Poverty in Africa, and the U.S. Agency for International Development.
In September, Nickson beat out more than 800 young entrepreneurs from 18 countries to win first prize in the 2014 Agribiz4Africa competition. Sponsored by Syngenta and Enactus Kenya, Agribiz4Africa aims to raise awareness about careers in agriculture among Africa’s youth while promoting new business opportunities in crop value chains. Nickson’s business idea for cassava value addition won $10,000 in startup capital.

4 Crucial Factors to Carefully Consider Before Adopting Cheaper Alternative Feed Ingredients to Replace Soyabean [Case Study: Excerpts from Email Tips to a Real Farm CEO on Evaluating Cashew as Potential Alternative to Soyabean in Commercial Pig Feeding]
This post is based on excerpts from an email message I sent to a Pig Farm CEO I’m working with to develop and implement ideas and strategies to boost farm output and profitability.
The message features two previews, with links to research study reports – that I’d been reviewing based on his expressed interest in using Cashew as a cheaper alternative feed ingredient (to Soyabean) in formulating rations for his pigs.
I ended it by pointing out 4 crucial factors to be carefully considered before adopting a “cheaper” alternative feed ingredient (like Cashew) to replace a conventional or standard feed ingredient like Soya bean]
Below are the two report previews ending with URLs…
[No. 1] Finishing swine fed cashew bagasse bran
ABSTRACTThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the digestibility of cashew bagasse bran as well as the performance of swine fed diets with different levels of inclusion of this by-product and their economic viability.
In the digestibility trial, ten crossbred barrows weighing 60±6.86 kg were housed in metabolic cages. Five received standard feed and five received test feed with 300 g kg−1 cashew bagasse bran included.
For the performance and economic viability study, forty crossbred pigs weighing 60±5.24 kg were allotted in a randomized block design with five treatments (0, 75, 150, 225, and 300 g kg−1 inclusion of cashew bagasse bran) and four replications.
Daily feed intake, daily gain, feed conversion, partial gross income with and without allowance index, and partial net income with and without allowance index were evaluated. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and regression analysis.
The treatment with 75 g kg−1 cashew bagasse bran provided the best results. Cashew bagasse bran can be included in the diet of finishing pigs up to the level of 300 g kg−1 without adversely affecting animal performance.
Key Words: alternative feed; crude fiber; pig; pseudo cashew

[No. 2] Utilization Of Diets Containing Cashew-Nut Reject Meal By Weaner Pigs
AO Fanimo, TE Oduguwa, TE Adewunmi, AI LawalAbstract
A trial was conducted to assess the performance and digestibility of weaner pigs fed diets containing cashew nut reject meal (CNM). A control diet was formulated without cashew nut reject meal while two other diets were also formulated to contain either 50g or 100g/kg diet. The CNM replaced soybean meal in the control diet and the three diets were isocaloric and isoproteinous.
Twelve six weeks old weaner pips (7.5 ± 0.89kg) were assigned on weight equalization basis to the three dietary treatments. Records of performance and some haematological parameters were taken.
The digestibility of dry matter and the proximate fractions of feed were also determined. Feed intake of pigs on the CNM diets were lower (P<0.05) than those in the control group but there were no significant effect (P>0.05) of CNM inclusion on weight gain and feed: gain ratio.
Protein efficiency ratio and apparent protein digestibilitv were highest in the soybean meal control diets. Pigs fed CNM diets had higher creatinine levels in their serum compared with the control diet. There were no significant differences among the dietary treatments for total protein, albumin, globulin, urea and cholesterol.
It was concluded that CNM can be included in the diets of weaner pigs to replace soyabean meal up to 10% level with little or no deleterious effect on rate of gain.
Keywords: Cashew nut meal, weaner pigs

NB; This 2nd report seems to be for sale, as you get taken to a subscription page when you click the link to view the full report.
What I will say however, is that the abstract is enough to get an idea of how the findings with regards to the usefulness of Cashew.
Having said the above (i.e. that Cashew is a good alternative to REPLACE expensive Soya Bean meal in rations fed to pigs), there are other factors to consider in deciding how to use this alternative feed ingredient – and I highlyight 4 key ones below…
1. AVAILABILITY– How readily can you get it to purchase, in the volumes and at the quality you NEED it to be for optimal feeding performance to happen for your pigs?
2. PRICE & PRICE STABILITY: What is the current price like, compared to Soya Bean? How significant is the difference between their prices? Also does it fluctuate? If YES, how much does that happen, and is there a pattern? PLUS can one plan successfully to make productive use of it despite such changes?
3. STORAGE: How well does it keep when put in storage? Does it have any serious sensitivity to the kind of storage conditions I saw on your farm e.g. exposure to moisture and prolonged storage before use?
4. RAW FORM: What form does the Cashew that is available come in? It is important to note that the research papers reviewed above referred to Cashew that had been processed into a specific physical form.
You will need to establish what form the cashew that will be available to YOUR farm will come in. This is so you can be sure what kind of handling it will require – otherwise you may not get the same feeding performance from using it, that the researchers suggest is possible.
So, you need to find out if, for instance, it will come as Cashew Nut Meal (CNM) or some other form.
If NO< there may be a requirement for you to do the necessary processing (e.g. grinding the nut) at your end before using it to feed your animals. If that need arises, do you have the required tools or equipment to do it right?
Improvising is never a good way to handle processing of ingredients for animal feeding, because it can directly affect the ability of the animals to optimally utilize it for growth and development.
Final Words
The way I see it, considering the VOLUME of this ingredient (Cashew) your pigs will be likely to require on a daily basis, if it is to be used, it may not be possible to get reliable access to it on a consistent basis.
But that’s just my thinking based on my current awareness “availability” of this particular item…
The realities that you eventually encounter by virtue of your farm’s location and efforts you invest, could result in more favorable outcomes in that regard.
So, goodluck to you!
[RECOMMENDED] The rise of self-education and individual investment
The message contained in the article previewed/linked below, WILL resonate strongly with ANY person who has reflected deeply on the inadequacies of our conventional education systems – in meeting rapidly changing, technology driven educational needs of today’s “learners”.
If the society refuses to make the required changes to education that can be had, I argue that every INDIVIDUAL can – and should! – make the changes necessary for him/herself…and EVERY parent should do same for his/her kids!
The rise of self-education and individual investment
With university tuition costs rising and a programming skill shortage, should students consider investing their time to help bridge the skill set gap?
Formal education certainly does not come cheap — with student fees rising and fewer university places available, but less traditional methods and a sharper focus on skill sets rather than formal qualifications could benefit job hunters more than a degree and a point score on their resume.
PII 079: Farmers’ Attitude Towards Involvement of Farmers’ Organizations In Provision of Extension Services [RESEARCH PROJECT]*

PII 079: Farmers’ Attitude Towards Involvement of Farmers’ Organizations In Provision of Extension Services [RESEARCH PROJECT]*
ABSTRACT
Inadequate provision of reliable and qualitative extensionservices to peasant and other farmers in Nigeria has remained a chronic problem (working against) the nation’s agricultural development drive. Using a simple random sample of 70 farmers, this study dealt with the attitude of farmers towards their organization’s involvement in the provision of extension services and the factors influencing such attitude. It was found that majority of the respondents were favorably disposed towards the idea of involving farmers’ organization
Type of farmers’ organization, the gender of the farmers and geographical location of the farmers are highly but negatively correlated with the farmers’ attitude towards their organization’s involvement in extension. The regression analysis showed that the type of farmers’ organization (beta = -0.74) is the single most important factor that determines the nature of attitudes towards farmers’ organizations’ involvement in extension among small scale farmers in Agege Local Government Area of Lagos State.
FARMERS ATTITUDE TOWARDS INVOLVEMENT OF FARMERS’ ORGANIZATIONS IN PROVISION OF EXTENSION SERVICES [RESEARCH PROJECT]*
Investigating A Different – Participatory – Approach to Improving Extension Services Delivery
NB: *This PDF paper is based on a 1992 undergraduate final year research project study I carried out in fulfillment of the requirements for a B.Sc. in Agricultural Extension Services from University of Ibadan’s Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry.
I put in great effort to prepare for and execute the project. Coming up with the topic was something my Project Supervisor (then “Dr.” and later “Prof.”) Terry Olowu did not let me fool around with. He drilled me extensively, and challenged me to do everything right from start till end.
I however believe what is most noteworthy today, is that reading through the paper, one readily sees that its contents remain relevant to development in Nigeria’s agriculture sector even today!
The challenge of what has been described in some circles as a “near comatose: extension services delivery system, make the ideas proposed for adoption in this paper worthy of serious consideration by policy makers and stakeholders in Nigeria’s agriculture industry.
This is why I’ve chosen to publish it here as a downloadable FREE PDF paper, for interested persons to study.
NB; It goes without saying that some concepts and bodies referred to in the paper are now obsolete. However, the overall strategy investigated remains undeniably relevant to our current situation!
I’m willing to discuss with interested stakeholders about possible applications of this paper’s findings ore even conducting an updated version that takes into account changes that may have taken place since this original study was done.

The following files are to be used for your review of this week’s tutorial:[1[ Step by Step screenshot video tutorial – this was emailed to you via pCloud Transfer BEFORE this broadcast. See your email inbox. Here’s a brief transcript excerpt from the video.
Let me know if you need any help replicating or putting the demonstrated concepts into use,
So, this is the expense section of the cash book. Remember 2 weeks ago, we insert the columnn (cost center) headings from the settings table into the expense table header row using the TRANSPOSE function – you can see it in the formula bar, in an array formula of sorts.
Now we’re going to put in formulas into the (cells in then) AMOUNT column, then freeze it in a way that enables us post values under ANY of the expense heads, along the row to the right, while being able to view the totals adding up for that Payment (Or Petty Cash) Voucher entry for that row/date.
This will make it easy for the user to quickly compare the total on the source/raw paper document (e.g. ledger) being used to that generated by the app’s table, in the AMOUNT column, so that any differences can be instantly detected and/or reconciled.
Watch the video to see how it’s done.

The FARM CEO (Issue 90): Agricultural Prosperity In Dry Africa – by Prof. Dov Pasternak [PDF Download]
This issue of The Farm CEO should have gone out last week, but the connectivity crisis I experienced over the weekend made it impossible. No need for details. What matters is that I’ve now found a solution that (seems to) work(s).
This week, I offer download access to a wonderfully loaded 98 page PDF publication titled “Agricultural Prosperity In Dry Africa” written by a seasoned expert – Prof. Dov Pasternak one of the pioneers of drip irrigation – who, over a 40 year period – played leading roles in (what he’s described as) “the agricultural development of dry Africa on new approaches and strategies that will lead to more successful development.”
Below are excerpts from the book’s introduction and Table Of Contents. Click here to download the full PDF…
Even though I am a scientist, by no means have I written this book in the style of a scientific publication. I present here a summary of my more than 40 years of experience in agricultural research and development in Israel, Egypt, Morocco, Argentina and sub-Saharan Africa. It is written in a style that can be understood by a layman but still appreciated by a scientist. The book deals specifically with agriculture in the Sudano Sahel, a region delineated by 300–800 mm/y rain isohyets stretching from Senegal to Eritrea, but it is relevant to other regions of dry Africa that are in the process of transitioning from traditional to more sophisticated forms of agriculture through a process that we call “development.”
From 1971 until 2001, I was an agricultural researcher at the Institute for Agriculture and Applied Biology (IAAB) of the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Beer Sheva, Israel. My specialty was research on saline water irrigation. Over a period of 30 years, I tested 36 crop species for salt tolerance acquiring a unique knowledge of a great variety of crops (field crops, forage crops, vegetables, fruit trees and ornamentals). This experience helped me immensely when I became the head of Crops and Systems Diversification at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) Sahelian Center in Niger.
I headed the IAAB from 1975 until 2001. This relatively small institute with a staff of 100 people has had a very significant impact on the development of the Negev Desert in what is referred to by many as the “Miracle of the Desert.” I believe the primary reason for this success was the absolute academic freedom given to scientists leading to and encouraging innovation.
