PII 157: Why Is Nigeria Such a Terrible Country? [A Nigerian University Professor Gives a PERFECT Response to This Quora.com Question] – Highly Recommended

NB: At the risk of stating the obvious, far from being self-serving, this week’s issue of my Performance Improvement Ideas (PII) newsletter is a Public Service.
Welcome.
Anyone familiar with me, and/or my writing most likely KNOWS that I do not hesitate to speak my mind on ANY issues. And when it comes to Nigeria, I am deliberately unapologetic and blunt in stating my views about how badly it has been – and is being run – by its leaders, and also how badly VERY MANY of its citizens behave, on a daily basis,  making it unpleasant for most people to live.
Little wonder that citizens readily seize any opportunity to FLEE to any other country.

When I saw the question “Why is Nigeria such a terrible country?” on Quora.com I felt a great urge to post a response to it.

I felt that way because I was almost convinced that most outsiders would NOT be accurate in the views they posted, and that any insiders (i.e. Nigerians in or out of the country) were likely to indulge in the usual nonsense like mentioning worse places, or saying Nigeria was getting better.
But right from the first paragraph of Prof. Omotayo Fakinlede‘s reponse to the question, I could tell that my contribution would not be needed.
By the time I was done reading, it was clear he had said ALL that needed to be said, making it crystal clear, like I had wanted to do, that Nigeria IS the way it is MAINLY because both leaders and followers are co-conspirators in the shameful mismanagement of one of the most blessed nations on the planet.
Hopefully it will serve as food for serious thought for those naughty individuals engaged in the sad practices described, so that they might turn over a new leaf, and enable Nigeria STOP being a crawling giant!

Out of sixteen answers I can see here, the Jewish Agronomist, Ian Kedem, in a few words, hit the nail on the head. Before I discuss his answer, let us note that several of my compatriots here engage in a very “Nigerian” pastime: Dispute the basis of the question itself; get angry about the question and indulge in our kind of “nationalism” in wishing away the truth. Nigeria, AD 2018, is a terrible country to live in. Take it from me, I am more than sixty years old and have lived here most of my life. I have also traveled the world. I have a clear idea of how other peoples manage their problems.

why-nigeria-terrible

The British left here long before most of the Nigerians living today were born. Blaming them for Nigeria’s problems is not just foolish, but self immolating for the simple reason that it means that unless “lord” Lugard came back to life, we will continue to wallow in this mess. Thankfully, some other African countries are not waiting for us: Rwanda is shedding its recent violent ethnic cleansing and moving to a better country that can look after its people. Botswana, Namibia, and others are giving Africa something to be happy about. I rejoice greatly for these nations!
