No. 125: Don’t Be Penny Wise, Pound Foolish In Your Business Marketing

What? You want to build a website for your business? That’s going to make you spend money every year for hosting and domain name registration!” exclaimed the IT consultant (NOT a typo!) friend to my Chartered Account client.

Looking at my client to see his reaction, I thought to myself: “Hmm, this is going to be interesting!”.

My Chartered Accountant Client Replied as Follows…

“Well, I’ve thought about it, and I know it’s necessary.

When I attended the 3 month course in the US last year, the course facilitators told us to establish a respectable professional image for ourselves from the outset.

To achieve that end, they recommended putting up a decent website to help us formally establish our individual brands, which we can nurture over time.

Most importantly, they noted that communicating with prospects, clients or professional colleagues should always be done from our official website email accounts, and not any of the free services e.g. Yahoo.com.

According to them, it’s the best way to command respect from those who encounter us.”

My Client’s Answer Impressed Me…and Made His IT Consultant (!) Friend Nod In Silent Understanding

I’ll leave you to wonder how an IT consultant would need his Chartered Accountant friend to explain the importance of investing in a website for his business!

But in case you wonder about the web based email aspect mentioned above, let me elaborate.

Tayosolagbade@hotmail.com (does not exist), would be an unprofessional email address to use in corresponding with a prospective client. This is why I use tayo at tksola dot com for example. The recipient, if a bit savvy, would readily deduce that typing www.tksola.com leads to my personal website.

Many highly qualified and intelligent professionals continue to use free mail services for their business communication. This waters down their credibility – especially before colleagues and prospects abroad (Europe, America etc) where such practices are frowned upon.

Don’t Be Miserly &/or Unintelligent In Promoting Your Brand!

Assuming you do not intend to do any updating of your website content, or to invest time or effort in propagating your content across other channels, only two “tasks” will concern you:

Payment for Domain Name Registration and Website Hosting.

Based on what I do for my clients, I know both can be had for $40 or less per annum.

You do the math.

Most people spend multiples of that amount buying food and drinks, making phone calls, entertaining friends etc in a month!!

The funny thing is, the business promotion benefits of a well package online presence will pay back that money many times over in a short period of time.

Here’s how: It will save you money by helping you minimize – or even eliminate – certain traditional marketing expenses. And it will also boost your sales leads generation = MORE income.

Some people subscribe to all sorts of smart phone based services that cost more than this amount.

I know people like that – “big business men and women”!

They use laptops and smart phones for their work, yet refuse – and I mean REFUSE (!) – to put up websites of their own.

But they readily give “gifts” to key officers in client companies, and also pay large sums for newspaper ads, that often expire in 24 hours! (A very unwise way to spend money)

I was once stupid enough to drag one such person, kicking and screaming (figuratively speaking), to put up a little Joomla! based website. He abandoned it within the first month…and of course never renewed the domain name or hosting.

Here’s One Reason Such Business Owners Act In That Strange Manner

NB: What I’m about to say now is based on my observations in my part of the world.

With the exception of individuals who genuinely needed it explained to them, most others have a negative attitude towards using web marketing because they practice what I describe below:

They use connections and other “underground methods” to win jobs. So they feel there’s no point “wasting” money nurturing their brands online.

In other words, their atttitude is often a reflection of how they make money in their businesses.

What I Have Continued to Tell Them Is: Things Will Not Always Remain the Same

That’s why it always pays to be proactive. To anticipate that a new dispensation can emerge, in which what worked before, may no longer work…at least not as well as it used to.

Here’s a scenario I often ask them to consider…

One day, you could walk into the reception hall of your major client company, and find a new face there.  Smiling politely, s/he may ask who you wish to see and demand you take a seat(instead of instantly ushering you upstairs like the previous job holder used to do).

When eventually she speaks with the decision maker, you may be shocked to learn he wants to know why you wish to see him. Puzzled, you would ask: “Isn’t that Mr XYZ”.

The receptionist would reply (smiling ever so politely):

“No. Mr. XYZ has been redeployed to the North Pole. It’s Ms ABC who now heads the division. And she insists all consultants send in their profiles, with URLs to their official websites indicated, to facilitate the ongoing review of service providers.”

We all know the above painted scenario can – and does – occur.

Question: Would You Be Prepared to Respond If/When Asked to Submit a Profile With Your Website URL?

From what I see in my part of the world, not many business owners – especially self-employed professionals/experts – would be.

Many seem to be under the mistaken impression that only big companies need to own websites. And most, for some strange reason, seem to have convinced themselves that $50 US dollars per annum is too much money to pay!

But that’s not the only problem.

You would imagine that those who’ve gone ahead and put up websites would have no problems making use of them.

In many cases, I’ve discovered they have little on their websites that make them look good enough to be chosen by clients.

And I mean useful information, not flashy design or pretty pictures!

Indeed, many with websites often leave really outdated content on them – which is even worse!

I’ve harped on this many times in the past. When the most recent content update on your website has a date stamp from 2 years ago, it creates a very bad impression about you.

Your brand’s image is determined by the perception people have of it. You can shape people’s perception using what you put out for them to see.

A physical meeting with you today is likely to be followed up with “Googling” of your name and a visit to ANY link that turns up. If your website appears, whatever that person sees on it will determine how his/her perception of you will evolve.

So will anything s/he finds on Twitter, Facebook, or any other platform s/he considers relevant.

Final Words: It Takes Very Little Money to Nurture Your Brand Online

This is the irony of it all.

Compared to the immense potential your online presence has to determine how seriously your target audience takes you, just a few dollars per month are all you will need to maintain it!

It therefore amounts to being penny wise, and pound foolish – in my considered opinion – for any serious minded business owner or professional, to balk at doing that.

All of the above is especially relevant to you as a business owner!

If you fail to do it, your success is bound to be limited. Others you will get measured against, who do it, will often fare better!

That’s not a curse…it’s simply the statement of an inevitable consequence, of what would be a bad decision on your part.

Let me end with an example to drive this point home…

To Succeed, Write As If Your Life Depends On It

I know this article’s title sounds extreme. But my target audience are people who’ve tried “everything” to start writing, and still struggle. Sometimes we need drastic measures to get ourselves out of a rut! I believe any adult with a clear sense of purpose should not struggle endlessly to write about what s/he does.

If you’ve been reading my articles on , you’ll know I advocate using intelligent creative writing for self-promotion, and business marketing. Writing/Blogging

Over the years, I’ve practiced what I preach, and gotten increasingly beneficial rewards – financially and otherwise.

I’ve however found that too many people are unable to make the long term commitment to write the way they should.

They express the desire to reap the kinds of rewards they see “conforming” others (like me) enjoy. But they find it too hard to invest the consistent time and effort needed to do the same thing.

Talking with many of them, and reflecting over how I see them operate over weeks and months of interaction, one thing has struck me.
Most of them are simply unable to convince themselves that not writing, when they should, really costs them anything tangible. They cannot see any negative consequence of not doing it.

And in a sense they are right…

When it comes to writing, the rewards of doing it, or not doing it, often take time to show up.

I’ve said it many times. The rewards rarely appear overnight. You will have to dig in, and kept at it, making intelligent changes, as you study the results you get. Those who struggle to commit to writing regularly as described above, are often those who end up quitting the use of writing as recommended above.

Then, one day, they hear or read about the success story of someone who kept going, and refused to stop writing, they suddenly wake-up again!

That’s when the person who just had a breakthrough finds himself getting asked by them: “How did you do it? Wow, so this really works. What do you think I can do to get started?”

Usually, that would not be the first time they would have had such a conversation with that individual, or with some other mutual acquaintance, that the latter would be aware of. But they’ll still do it anyway.

My experience with fielding such questions from such individuals has taught me that only ONE other solution exists for them. And it’s the extreme one that’s described in this article’s title.

That’s Why People Who Struggle May Need to Imagine That Writing Is a Matter of Life and Death – for Them!

Yep. I consider it to be probably the only way people like that will ever make the needed commitment to writing with purpose as they need to.

If you’ve tried writing and failed to get yourself up and running with it, this is my recommendation:

Trick your mind into believing that not writing could result in a loss of life – could be yours, or that of a loved one. The human mind is an interesting tool. Even when it’s “aware” of our thoughts, we can “train” it to believe whatever we want (Re: auto-suggestion. Napoleon Hill wrote about this in Think and Grow Rich).

I came to this realization from personal experiences of my own writing struggles. Each time I missed writing an article on the date/time I wanted, I felt very bad. This was because I cared passionately about sending out my message to my audience.

Over time, in order to avoid having that bad feeling, I forced myself to develop the discipline to get the writing done even if one minute before midnight…even if I’d not eaten for 2 days…even if I was dead tired and dozing on my feet…even if I was stuck in a stuffy bus in the middle of a traffic jam on a Lagos road.

Regardless of where I was or what I was doing, I resolved to NEVER let my writing go undone.

I said to myself:

What if writing 250 words today was the “price” you had to pay to keep yourself alive for ONE more day. Or to keep your loved one alive for another week?

That really brought it home for me. It helped me weigh just how badly I wanted to do it.

I realized that even though no one’s life was really at stake, writing as if that was the case, did add up to IMPROVING my life, and those of my loved ones EVERY day I did it.

How?

When your life (or that of a loved one) is at stake, you’re bound to put in your very best effort. Also, each day you write, and that you write good quality content, you add to the volume of useful content your target audience can get from you. You never want to miss even ONE!

This would gradually boost your name recognition and lead to rewards of all kinds. And that would mean greater success for you, with each passing day!

So, if you’re tried everything else and nothing works, start today, writing as if your life depends on it.Unless you’re lazy, you’ll find this strategy will get you up and running, and keep you going as long as you want, in no time.

Emancipate Your Thinking: Many Roads Lead to Authentic Success!

Our persistent thoughts ultimately determine the outcome of our lives. This is a well known truth. It is for this reason that learning to control our thoughts is considered by successful people, to be a very important competence.

In many societies today, it appears fewer people are arriving adulthood with this ability. As a result, we’re witnessing, sadly too, poorer quality levels of individual accomplishment.

Too many people prefer to play safe by settling for “group thinking” i.e. aligning themselves with what the majority thinks. And this, even when they nurse strong contrary opinions or sentiments.

Let’s examine a typical situation in many societies (especially in my part of the world) that needs challenging.

Incidentally, Robert Kiyosaki – in his book “If You Want to Be Rich & Happy, Don’t Go to School?” – has already identified this problem.

Most young people are told by their parents that getting a good education is essential to succeeding in life.

Salawatu Abeni is a popular female musical artiste in Nigeria (in the traditional Yoruba Fuji genre).

Yet she barely finished her elementary schooling. Despite her poor educational background, she achieved significant success in her musical career. Expressing herself in English was however one area she lacked proficiency, Sometimes that presented a challenge if/when she had to communicate in that language.

At some point, Salawatu decided to enroll for private classes.

Some reports have it that she actually took a short course at the University of Lagos. Whatever she did, it worked, because whenever she spoke subsequently, one readily noticed marked improvements in her ability to express herself in English!

In effect, she’d gone about the business of getting “formal schooling” the other way round!

We have a saying in my language (Yoruba) actually justifies this approach

It goes thus:

“K’A RO ASO MO IDI, TABI K’A RO IDI MO ASO, KI’DI SAA MA PA OFO!”.

Translated literally, this phrase means:

“It doesn’t matter whether you tie a cloth around your waist or tie your waist around the cloth, so long as you don’t end up appearing naked in public!”.

Taken in context, it means: Salawatu went out and got successful using her skill as a singer, then returned to get an education using the money she had earned through her success.

Another good example many of us can relate to is the great Juju music exponent: King Sunny Ade.

A few decades back, interviewing him in English was not something he would have found agreeable. He had very limited competence in use of the language!

Today,  just as he does playing music, Sunny can hold his own before ANY audience in speaking English. How did he manage this? Simple. He got someone to provide practical coaching for him, till he achieved proficiency.

Since he was already making good money singing in his own language (Yoruba), he could afford to pay for the best available tutoring, and for as long as necessary.

How many people do you know, who blame lack of money for their inability to finish schooling?

I know too many like that!!

Maybe if they had been encouraged to use (or develop) their talents, skills or special knowledge to make a living from earlier on in life, they might have been able to do something like what Salawatu, and Sunny Ade did.

Many so-called “educated” people do not know how to make money by providing a service or product that others appreciate enough to pay money for.

Their schooling did not prepare them for that. Yet, this (traditional schooling) is the path they want their children to follow!

What is Education Anyway?

Napoleon Hill described an educated person as someone who applies the knowledge s/he acquires to productive purposes.

Many “formally schooled” persons do not do this.

And that’s why for instance, we find our graduates of mechanical or automobile engineering working in banks!

Even worse, many of these supposed “experts” of engineering will typically get their car engines serviced by roadside mechanics that have never even seen the four walls of a school!

This fact is underscored by the saying that “knowledge is NOT power – applied knowledge IS!”

Some parents discourage their children from trying to make money from early stages of their lives.

This is wrong.

I say this as a father of five kids. Two of them (boys) already earn periodic income by finding and selling metal items required by itinerant waste collectors. They also team up with their 14 year old elder brother, to make and sell my pineapple peel drinks in the school they attend.

Way back in 2002, when I started out in business, I vowed to educate my kids about money issues, and prepare to begin earning income before they clock ten.

The youngest of the three boys mentioned above will be eleven years old in July this year (2014).

Last week I bought him a complete set of electrician’s tools – multi-tester, pliers, soldering iron etc. And he’s already making use of them – having received some coaching from his visiting lesson teacher who happened to possess some useful knowledge on how to use them.

This youngest of my boys is headed for a technical training school. I’m sure of it!

There is no doubt in my mind that he will be best served by immediate exposure to practical training, based on what he already does in the house.

He figures things out for himself – and his mother readily passes faulty electrical devices to him to fix. Many times he succeeds. Rather than follow the crowd and push for him to attend the so called “university”, I know he needs to go to a technical college.

Until then, I’ll continue supporting him by providing practical tools, activities and experiences, to engage his creative energies. And he really loves it. You should see him put them to use at every opportunity. That alone tells me I’m doing the right thing!

The boys also have two sisters aged 4 and 8 respectively. I’m bidding my time with the girls, trying to study them and identify where their passions lie. It’s just a matter of time before I help them discover their own magnificent obsessions too.

The Earlier You Start, the Better for Your Child

Jim Rohn and Robert Kiyosaki in their writings advise that helping kids develop income earning talents and skills, as early as possible in life, is the wise thing for every parent to do.

Over 14 years ago, when my first child was born, I resolved to take their advice. Today, the results I’m getting confirm it was a wise decision.

Unfortunately, parents in our society generally believe that their children should finish school before beginning the business of learning how to make money and create wealth.

That needs to change – else the tragic experiences of poorly prepared graduates from our institutions will continue to torment us daily in our society. It’s time we changed our thinking.

What I Have Expressed Here Are My Personal (Experience-Based) Opinions

The ideas I share in this article were conceived over 14 years ago, and formed a major component of the talks I delivered in some organisations across Lagos.

You do not have to accept them. I do implore you however, to reflect on them. Read Robert Kiyosaki’s books: “If You Want to Be Rich & Happy, Don’t Go to School?”; “Rich Dad, Poor Dad”. Read also Napoleon Hill’s “Think and Grow Rich”. They might help you arrive at your own ideas.

NB: This article was written based on excerpts from my Self-Development Bible™ titled “Ten Ways You Can Use Self-Development to Create the Future You Want”.

How to Achieve Self-Development, and Career Advancement Simultaneously (True Story)

This article narrates how(and why), after midnight of 14th November 1997, I slept overnight in a taxi at Lagos, Nigeria’s popular Ojota Park. I came in by night bus after closing 9p.m afternoon shift in Guinness Benin City, Edo State in order to arrive on time to participate in the National Finals of Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM)’s Young Managers Competition.

I’ve written in the past about the first management research paper I wrote in 1997

That was the paper I presented at the NIM competition. Based on project work I did as a trainee shift manager/brewer in Guinness Nigeria, it was titled “Statistical Process Control and Target Setting (in a Manufacturing Organisation).

In that paper, I wrote about instances in which I successfully applied my proficiency in use of statistical tools and expertise in spreadsheet solutions development, to solve real life process management problems.

Among others tools, the concept of Total Waste Unaccounted For (TWUF), was introduced, and its usefulness for reconciliation of calculated waste in manufacturing process operations was discussed.

I’ll be publishing a special PDF report on that concept in future.

Suffice it to say here that when I got to the National Finals of that competition, TWUF was singled out for mention by the judges, as a noteworthy innovation for solving process waste problems.

It was NOT easy…At ALL!

I spent hundreds of hours during my annual leave, writing that paper. And I eventually submitted 7 printed and bound copies to the institute, and enrolled for the competition. All at my own expense.

The zonal competition took place in Ibadan, Oyo state while I was still on annual leave, so I got to partake without people at work knowing about it.

The only persons I told were the three senior managers I gave copies of my final draft to help me read through.

Two were British expatriates, and one was a Nigerian. They were all nice, even polite in receiving me. I told them I needed to be sure nothing I’d written in my paper would be frowned upon by management.

The two expatriate managers got back to me after reading it through. Not only did they have verbal feedback for me, they also made pencilled notes in the copies I gave them, which they returned to me.

In contrast, I never got my draft manuscript back from the Nigerian manager. Despite my best efforts, he also did not volunteer to give me any tips or feedback.

I remained undaunted and went ahead to submit the revised paper.

A few weeks later, I partook in the zonal competition, and came a close second to the winner. I still recall being asked by the organisers and the other participants why I had no formal company representative with me. One or two individuals from some other corporate organisations were actually assigned official transportation etc to the event. I replied that I never formally informed the company that I was enrolling in the competition.

About 2 weeks later, I was back at work in the brewery, when the letter inviting me for the National Finals arrived in the mail. Since I was back on shift I needed to get permission from my boss to be away on the weekend the competition was to hold.

So, I went to his office and told him about my successful zonal outing, and the finals I now had to attend. He promptly agreed.

That was on Friday. On Monday, during the brewery meeting for departmental heads, the announced it to the others.

Next thing I knew, everyone was congratulating me, and/or saying “Go get the prize!”

It was a good feeling, but I would have preferred to have waited till after the finals to inform others.

On Friday I closed afternoon shift at 9p.m, and travelled by night bus from my base in Benin City, Edo State, to Ojota, Lagos.

Due to armed robber ambush threats, we did not get to Lagos until about 1.30p.m. Anyone who knows what Nigeria’s Lagos is like will be aware that it becomes a ghost town from midnight. People hurry home; lock their doors till the next morning.

Why?

Well, the dangerous men of the Night (i.e. armed robbers) often patrolled during that time of the day, till the early hours of the morning, looking to dispossess people of their money and properties.

I quickly disembarked from the bus, and walked up to a Taxi driver standing next to his taxi, just under the pedestrian bridge at Ojota bus stop end.

I asked him where I could find a hotel. He replied that it was too dangerous to go around at that time of the night, and that it would be better if I waited till morning. Then he told me I could join him to sleep in his car till daybreak – which was what he and his colleagues planned to do as a group with their cars parked together that night.

I Had to Sleep In a Taxi at Ojota Motor Park Till Daybreak!

Having no better option I agreed. We soon slept off, and I can recall wondering if I would survive till the next day. At about 5.30 a.m, a bus conductor’s voice woke us, as the early Lagos day began.

I waited till it was 6.00 a.m, then thanked my host, the taxi driver, for his help, then rushed to join a bus headed for Palmgrove. 30 minutes later I arrived at our family house in Gbagada.

My surprised mother still had her mouth hanging open in curious wonder when I rushed into the house to take my bath, change my clothes, and then announce the reason for my visit.

By this time, it was about 8.00a.m. The letter from the institute said contestants had to arrive their Idowu Taylor premises on Victoria Island by 9.00a.m.

I told my mother I could not wait to eat, dashing out to the express way, and flagging down a yellow Lagos taxi. By 8.40a.m, the taxi deposited me in front of the NIM’s Management House. I soon found a snacks seller and quickly downed a bottle of soft drink with a meat pie, then made my way into the hall.

3 hours later it was all over, and unlike my brilliant outing at the zonal competition, I’d choked during my presentation at the nationals!

Read details of what I did wrong and lessons I learnt in this popular article I wrote about that incident.

The point of this article is that the above described experienced did me a lot of good in the long run, even though I did not win the top prize.

Apart from the exposure I got (the press was well represented), my efforts to prepare for the competition led top level decision makers I approached to notice me.

Even though I was not thinking of it at the time, they naturally kept an eye out for me subsequently. I was the first ever manager from Guinness to participate in such an event. And I’d gotten as far as placing 5th at the national finals.

What better way to advertise your potential to your company’s management!

Final Words

I’ll end this piece by saying that I believe it pays to find time to pursue opportunities for self-development and personal advancement outside your workplace.

For one thing, it will help you keep in touch with what’s happening in the world. More importantly, you could end up making yourself appear more valuable to your employer, boosting your job security.

I have no doubt in my mind that the events I’ve described above influenced – to some extent – the rapid career advancement I went on to experience in that company in 5 years that followed

This is why I recommend tat you also explore viable ways to engage in extracurricular that can help you achieve the twin goals of self-development, and career advancement, like I did.

Carefully study available opportunities in the world outside your workplace, against the backdrop of potential opportunities you identify in the company. Then devise a strategy to make the most of them.

Good luck!

Making Money Your Primary Motive is Risky

Do you know why you do what you do? If money is the most important reason you’re doing it, I argue that your achievement of long term success and fulfilment could suffer.

Real Life Historical Evidence Confirms the Importance of Knowing Why You Do What You Do

It does not matter whether you’re in paid employment or run your own business. Being clear about your reason will often be crucial to your ability to achieve sustained long term success in your chosen vocation or profession.

I’ve read very many true stories that attest to the accuracy of the statement I made in the above paragraph. When a person is not clear about his/her reasons for engaging in an activity, any unexpected visitations of adversity can derail his/her progress with permanent effects.

In the same vein, having the wrong motives for doing what you do can also set you up for failure in the long run. For anyone who wishes to achieve high level success on a consistent basis in his/her chosen area of endeavour, my experiences and studies suggest it pays to NOT make money the major reason.

When It’s Money, Different Amounts Serve as a Threshold for Different People

If a person is competent and determined enough, s/he will eventually achieve any financial goal s/he sets her mind upon.

People like that typically become so wealthy that they get recognised by many others for it. And that sense of accomplishment naturally makes them feel on top of the world.

What happens when a person gets to the top of the world? Well, it’s likely s/he would conclude there’s nothing left to be done.

Without a disciplined mindset, the next step most people take often amounts to pressing a self-destruct button. They develop all sorts of “addictions”. A downward spiral in their fortunes gradually commences as they let sloth and indifference make them stop doing the things that made them successful.

Think about it.

When a person works hard and long for years to get wealth, fame, success, s/he is naturally likely to feel “Yeah, I earned this. Now, let me sit back and enjoy the fruits of my hard work.” If s/he has wisely taken care of generating passive income to never work again, the aspect of money may never be a problem.

When Money’s the Primary Motive, Achieving Financial Independence Can Present a Dilemma About What Else to Do!

I refer here to a person who succeeds in making more money that s/he can ever spend, for instance.

If s/he made money the primary motivation in the first place, s/he may find it hard to think of a productive way to spend his/her time from that point on. That’s why some successful people end up engaging in naughty behaviour that gets them in trouble…sometimes with the law.

The irony is however that many people don’t even get to a point where they’ve made enough money to never have to work again, before they begin to sabotage themselves with bad habits.

Not having other motives, s/he begins to lose focus. They let the euphoria of a little success make them get sloppy at what they do.

Others they relate with notice it gradually. Some may point it out. Most times however, the fact that the person feels “Yeah, now I have money, nothing else matters!” s/he will often fail to effect needed changes until it’s too late.

That’s Why It’s Better to Have Motives Superior to Money Making

If you think deeply enough about it, it’s likely you’ll be able to find a compelling and enduring reason. As far as your life’s ambition goes, it’s crucial that you KNOW why you want to achieve it. Knowing why, as Jim Rohn once said, will make it easy to know why you cannot give it up – ever!

It will also keep you interested in doing it, even after you make more money than you can ever hope to spend in life. This is the key to long term success, fulfilment and even longevity. People who have something to live for rarely see that thing as money. It is often something of much greater significance e.g. the desire to influence useful change in the lives of others.

Final Words

Many great people who amass wealth have superior motives to money making driving them. As a result, even after becoming financially secure, they keep going with the same drive right into their old ages.

I believe that is the best way to make the most of one’s self.

Have a reason for doing what you do, that transcends making money, so that even when you get rich, you’ll still find it worthwhile doing it!

This ensures the world continues to benefit from the value we provide, till we pass on. That was exactly how Nelson Mandela lived his life until his death.

And wow, what a great life he ended up having!

A Pocket-Friendly Poultry Farm Manager Software for Profit Conscious Farm Business Owners

A growing number of smallholder poultry farmers are impressing me with their drive to achieve best practice improvement in their farm businesses. The increasing rate at which they contact me about purchasing my Excel-VB driven Poultry Farm Management app, is how I know.

That’s Why I Deliberately Bear The Cost of Calling Them on Phone – Both Locally and Internationally!

Yep. That’s what I do. I now make up to 2 calls per week on the average, in response to web based enquiries from farm business owners about that app.

Every time I’ve done it, the Farm CEO has often been taken by surprise.

It never ceases to amaze them, that I can readily make such an expense of effort, time and money, even when I’m not sure any sale will come of it.

Like I’ve told each and every one of them, I do this because I have a vision I want to accomplish.

Smallholder farmers in many countries tend to be limited in terms of resources they can access to really take their businesses to the next level. One key area has always been the dearth of customizable software well suited to the unique needs of the respective farms.

As a result, most have had to improvise using conventional solutions existing in the market.

My vision is to establish trusting relationships with willing smallholder farmers, to equip them to use low cost PC and Internet technology, for running their farm businesses more productively and profitably.

The more they are able to plan for and manage their farm operations in a way that minimises setbacks and delays, the better their fortunes will be.

By proving that I have ability and resources to help them achieve the foregoing, serious minded farm CEOs are likely to regard me as a potentially useful solution provider, to keep around for the long term.

The first step of course, is to get them to give me a chance to show what I can do.

Those who are already members of my Farm Business Ideas Club, have seen that I can truly help them. A good number purchased my Feed Formulation Handbook, and the accompanying Ration Formulation Software.

Most have never met with me in person, yet they have continued as subscribers to my newsletter for over 3 years. Some have become good friends, with whom I share great phone conversations regularly.

But like I said, most of those I have in my network have come based on their interest in finding feed formulation solutions.

Recently, a new group of Farm CEO enquirers has begun to demand my attention

In the past, their enquiries were very few and far between.

This group is interested in my Best Operating Process Management System(BOPMS)™, which advocates use of low cost customizable software applications for proactive farm operations performance monitoring and control.

In several past articles, and also on the Mind Map I created for the BOPMS™, I refer to such applications as Enterprise Information Systems (EIS).

These new group often watch the video presentations I’ve recently put up on my website, and also on Youtube. Then just as I anticipated would happen, the attractive benefits of the featured software solutions and Best Practice System make them submit the web contact form provided on the page.

Up till that point, everything goes according to my projections.

However, when I eventually call them up, I have noticed, consistently – but not surprisingly – that most are not prepared for what I tell them.

Apart from the deliberate profiling I do via question asking, to be sure they are the right fit for my software solution, most are not able to fit the required investment for the app, into their budget.

The Farm Business CEOs that have, so far, reached out to me regarding the Poultry Farm Manager software, include persons from Kenya (2 of them), Cameroon, USA, South Africa etc

By way of interest, one person did get across to me from Iran, but when I called him up, he said “I no speak English. Please send email.”

That was odd, considering he’d filled the web form in English to make his enquiry. Looking back however, I imagine he had a basic understanding of English, and on seeing what the app could do in the video, desired it. Then he probably used translate.google.com to word his enquiry :-)

I should add that due to habit of checking the websites archive of past enquiries, I discovered the same chap from Iran had sent in an enquiry about my Feed Formulation Handbook in 20!0!

All of this goes to further underscore the fact that the web marketing system I use delivers powerful, and lasting/long term benefits.

Tailoring My Poultry Farm Software Solution to Meet the Budget Needs of Small Farmers

Since I really want to help these farmers, I’ve decided to offer them an alternative solution.

Yesterday I told a Cameroonian Farm Business owner who has 1,000 broilers on his farm, that I’ll build a scaled down version of my Poultry Farm Manager, for persons with limited budgets/needs.

He expressed great relief on hearing that.

I promised I would get back to him in one week. But he’s not the only one I’ll be offering this Mini-Poultry Farm Manager to.

All the other smallholder farmers who’ve reached out to me will get an special offer to buy this lower priced, less sophisticated version of my app.

Are a Profit-Conscious Poultry Farm Business Owner?

Do you desire a pocket-friendly priced and ready-to-use app to help you better manage your farm operations, proactively and profitably?

If yes, I urge you to fill/submit the form on this page.

Do so now, to get yourself served my special offer, once the mini version of my Excel-VB Driven Poultry Farm Manager Software is ready.

Believe me, you’ll be glad you did!

No. 124: What Today’s Teachers Miss (and How It Can Hurt Your Child!)

This is not an attack on teachers. It’s instead an informed view of what a growing number of this group of “public speakers” are failing to do, inadvertently denying learners (our kids!) the most important “knowledge and skills” they need to excel in life.

If you’re one, or have relations with one, my advice is that you read this piece with an open mind.

I’m not the enemy here. Our collective ignorance is.

We must join hands to improve the quality of real world relevant “education” being dished out to our loved ones, by this most trusted group of “speakers” in our societies.

What Teachers Often Miss Today

My kids will tell you I am the harshest critic of their school teachers. But not to the faces of the latter. That would amount to setting the classroom on fire for the former :-)

Instead, each time I interact with my kids, I often discover they have certain yawning gaps in knowledge (and often skills) which should not be there, given the child’s (supposed) attained level.

A closer examination of the “teachers” has revealed, to me, that many settled for teaching only after failing to find jobs based on what they studied in the higher institution.

Most have no formal teacher training or experience.

My mother worked for over 3 decades as a school teacher. She went through all sorts of training. And I recall that before retirement. she got an advanced certification is a Montessorri program in Lagos.

I and my siblings passed through my mothers’ “teaching” in the school we attended at nursery and primary level. It never ended in school. She kept at us even at home. Be assured that I am a good representation of how we all turned out.

The above convinced me I needed to play an influential role in “teaching” my kids.

But here’s what my mother did, which most teachers today do not. She taught us the basics…the fundamentals of every subject. She spent quality time drilling those rudiments of the key subjects into our heads.

Then she relentlessy gave us exercises designed to force us to self-study. Today, we all have the unique ability to tutor ourselves on any subject and excel at it. I exaggerate not!

There was one more thing she did:

She talked to us about the importance of believing in ourselves. Of never feeling inadequate before others, no matter how “superior” they appeared to be. And she walked her talk for us to see, everywhere she went.

That’s why today, each of us enjoys the reputation of being “independent thinkers”. We do not care to join the crowd. We decide what we want, and go for it, even if NO ONE ELSE is interested, or indeed if others speak against.

As long as it’s legal, does not hurt anyone, and we feel it’s OK for us, nothing else matters. We know how to define our own success!

Many teachers today do not do most of the above.

Instead, they let the influence of society – often the wayward aspects of it! – dictate what they teach kids under their care.

This is why most of today’s youths have a warped sense of values and orientation.

To illustrate, below is a screenshot of an excellent observation made by Olufemi Oyinloye, a Facebook friend today, which I posted a response to.

Screenshot of an excellent observation made by Olufemi Oyinloye, a Facebook friend today, which I posted a response to.

His grouse?

Corporate organisations out here, and in many places across the world are focussing most of their youths “development” efforts on sports and entertainment related projects.

Little or nothing is being done along the lines of educational or intellectual development. Could this be a mainly self-serving kind of Corporate Social Responsibility by these companies…?

Like my friend rightly asked, are they trying to say our kids don’t have anything “upstairs” that can be developed just as physical skills can?

You and I know the answer.

The Noisy Brand of Success Is NOT The Only One…and Definitely NOT The Best!

People get paid daily for their creative skills in writing, software development etc.

Thousands, and tens of thousands in dollars, pounds, Euros etc arrive via bank transfers and other legitimate payment channels into the hands of uniquely skilled persons, even right here in Africa.

It all happens quietly.

Unlike the noisy success of the entertainment industry, no newspaper reports announce any of it. That’s why many of the unitiated walk past others earning high level income that way, without knowing it.

Afterall, neither how much I earn, nor the unusual but legit way I earn it will ever be discernable by looking at my forehead!

Sometimes an internationally funded entity pays for work done e.g research surveys, concept papers, lectures, training, consulting etc. At other times, individual clients pay.

Delayed payments rarely occur. Parties involved always get win-win benefits. That’s why most such relationships established often last for decades!

As I said in a recent article, most African/Nigerian kids know nothing about the highly rewarding vocations and markets mentioned above, because our society is often devoid of such examples.

It’s the loud cases of celebrity entertainers like Tuface, P-Square and D-Banj (and famous sports persons like Mikel Obi) they are drawn to by the mass media.

And that makes it hard for kids or young people to imagine it is possible, talk less of believing they can succeed in the silent and unconventional manner described here.

Yet they can, if they are properly guided. We, their parents, are in the best position to do that.

As one who succeeds in this unconventional manner, with honesty and integrity, I am coaching my kids to discover their own talent for doing same. The best part is that anyone can still do it all, while holding down a well paying 9 to 5 salary job!

That means you can effectively double your income without needing to quit your day job*. There is no better gift one can give a child than this.

If you help your child develop this additional level of skill and competence, s/he will forever be grateful to you!

[NB: Renowned US based veteran public speaking mentor, Burt Dubin, always counsels his mentees to NOT quit their day jobs, till they establish reliable income to replace their salary. Learn more about Burt’s mentoring here.]

Final Words: Take Personal Action to Help Your Kids!

Yesterday, on Facebook, I shared a link to my FULL blog post on the subject. It’s titled “Don’t Just ‘Tell’ Your Kids to Do…Be an Exemplary Role Model.

Photo - I made each of my kids handle a fifty Euro note from a bundle I received as payment for the agribusiness paper I wrote for an International organisation.

In it I explained how and why I made each of my kids handle a fifty Euro note from a bundle I received as payment for the agribusiness paper I wrote for an International organisation.

You see, I’m committed to showing my kids how to use their intellectual creativity to achieve highly productive and rewarding financial ends.

I urge you to do the same, quickly too, or the avalanche of “reality shows” will kill that instinct in them!

Read through my above mentioned blog post to get started. It offers practical ideas you can use.

Good luck!

Don’t Just “Tell” Kids to Do…Be an Exemplary Role Model

When the bundle of currency notes was handed to me by Professor Idowu Oladele (who’d received the payment via his Euro domiciliary account), it was the first time I was setting eyes on the "Euro" in cash . If I sound like a "bush man" by admitting the foregoing, forgive me. I’m just being myself. I do not believe in creating false impressions, trying to make myself seem to know more than I do :-)

I earn income in dollars for some of my products/services, but the cash gets to me often with the help of my sister who works in a bank out here, in Naira. I’ve of course handled both dollars and pounds in cash many times over the years.

Odd as it may sound however, I’d not seen the Euro physically, before that day.

When I got home, I sat my kids down, and made each one take a fifty Euro note and examine it closely, then tell me what currency it was. Maybe it was the Igbo blood that runs in their veins, but all of them correctly announced that it was fifty Euros. Again, forgive me if you think this is no big deal. Maybe my "bush man" attitude is what makes me think it is :-)

Any reader of my parenting articles will know I seize any opportunity to share my experiences of the world with my kids.

Even the smallest of them who turns four in a few months gets my full attention, each time I do this exercise.

It’s not some ego trip.

Far from it. Instead, I do it because I feel driven, even compelled. A strange sense of urgency to pass on as much of my real world experiences to each of my kids possesses me.

I do it so dedicatedly, that their mother has accused me of caring for no one else apart from the kids!

The truth is however that many potentially traumatizing experiences I had struggling to breakthrough in the business world my country are the cause

Those experiences taught me that very little of what I learnt in school, and even less of what I’d picked up in paid employment, would help me succeed in business in my country.

I had to unlearn and relearn so many things that I thought I knew.

And it was such a slow and painful process that exposed me to prolonged periods of humiliation, and psychological suffering. All that time I knew it was not me that was the problem. I knew it was the incomplete "educational" preparation I’d had that was limiting me.

I did not know the ways of the world. That people will often not be straight and honest. That things are rarely white and black i.e clearly defined. I was not ready for the widespread duplicity most people engage in.

In essence, I was simply NOT street smart enough to succeed in business…in NIGERIA!

But soon I learned.

I had to!

I realised no one was willing to help me effect the needed corrections or filling the gaps in my “education”.

So, I took the bull by the horns, as they say, buried my fears and doubts, and began taking the needed steps to find a solution that worked for me.

A careful analysis led me to the conclusion that doing business like the majority would go against my values and ethics. And those I will never compromise.

I therefore decided to channel my energy and efforts into using my creative intellectual skills to attract high profile buyers for my solutions. Time soon revealed most of such people would be better found using my online self-promotion platform.

So, I gradually stopped seeking clients/work offline, and focussed my efforts 99% ONLINE.

Today, all of that silent, but hard work is paying off.

My progress and success rate has really ramped up, especially after I relocated to Benin Republic.

From that time back in April 2013, my work volume and quality simply hit the roof, and I began to get quality sales leads from my online self-promotion.

One day, the opportunity to write the agribusiness research paper on using Excel-VB to develop software for Feed Formulation came.

And the payment being offered for the accepted paper was 2,500 Euros.

As with everything else, I told my kids about it. I sat them down and reminded them how people would phone me after reading my articles on agribusiness. They recalled email alerts from GT Bank for payments ranging from N1, 500 to over N25, 000 for different products and services described on my website.

Then I told them I was in the country to conduct questionnaire surveys for this paper I’d been asked to write by an International Organisation, which had given me a contract, stating it would pay me.

I explained how my co-author Professor friend had sent me the Call for papers document and asked me to write the proposal.

“If they accept the final paper I submit, they will pay us 2,500 Euros. Do you know how much that is in Naira?” I asked.

They all said no. So I got on the web, and did a check of the prevailing exchange rate at www.coinmill.com and did a quick calculation to show them how much money it would be in Naira.

When they saw the figure, the eldest one said “You mean they will pay you that for writing 4,000 words?”I said “Yes. But it’s not just anything that I’ll write. My paper must meet certain conditions they’ve specified. And of course it must offer useful new knowledge/information.”

But I knew telling them about it would not be the same as showing them the real thing if/when it materialized.

This was just too strange a way of making money for them to accept. They would have to see it to believe.

You must understand. I’ve always pushed them to think and write creatively.

I’ve challenged them to write short stories. To think up interesting new twists and angles to real life experiences they have, and then write it out as a short story.

And they’ve been trying to do it.

As you can imagine, with kids – in Africa’s Nigeria, who see little creative effort rewarded – they did not do it with much sustained enthusiasm.

So I knew that if they saw the physical monetary reward of my own writing efforts, it would provide them a more lasting motivation.

They would readily invest more effort – on their own – to develop the habit of creative thinking and writing.

That was why I called the meeting and let them see the bundle of notes.

By the time we finished our meeting, I could see that the three older children in particular, had come away with a new found enthusiasm for the ideas I proposed.

Talking with the 14 year old during our subsequent outing, I could see he was more open to doing more writing, to improve on this one he did months back.

As I’ve tried to emphasize in all of my past write-ups on a similar theme, I do not share my success stories, in order to brag.

Instead, I do it because our society is often devoid of such examples.

And that makes it hard for kids or young people to imagine it is possible, talk less of believing they can succeed in that manner.

Yet they can, if they are properly guided. We, their parents, are in the best position to do that.

As one who succeeds in this unconventional manner, with honest and integrity, I am coaching my kids to discover their own talent for doing same.

That means you can effectively double your income without needing to quit your day job. There is no better gift one can give a child than this.

In 2014, and beyond, I urge you to help your child develop this additional level of skill and competence. S/he will forever be grateful to you!

A Lesson on Money Spending from John D. Rockefeller

Those who have experienced severe lack of money and gone on to become financially successful often display frugality and prudence in handling money. The authors of “The Millionaire Next Door” reported from their over 2 decade study of mostly self-made millionaires across America, that majority of them built their wealth slowly and from scratch too.

Getting rich that way takes time and great discipline too.

We are told that many of them enjoyed long years of marriage and in most cases the couples actively collaborated to find ways to both save money, and also grow the money they saves.

Many had/have a penchant for seeking bargains in shopping for clothes and other consumables. They rarely chose to buy from expensive high end stores patronized by free spending celebrities and career persons living high consumption lifestyles.

Today, I had a meeting with Professor Idowu Oladele

He co-authored the paper I recently got approved for international publication on use of Excel-VB Software Development for Feed Formulation by Smallholder farmers and Extension Specialists.

The last time we saw each other was in 2005, when I’d visited the University of Ibadan (Oyo state, Nigeria) to get my transcript.

During our conversation, he’d shared his experiences in academia with me, and I’d left with a copy of his extensive and very impressive resume. Some weeks later, in consultation with him, I’d created a web based version of that resume and hosted it on a sub domain on my website.

He would eventually move to a university in Botswana, while participating in various international projects.

Today, he is the Director of the School of Agricultural Sciences at North West University, in South Africa.

We’ve come a long way. Keeping in touch since we both graduated in the same set, in 1992, from the department of Agricultural Extension Services of the University of Ibadan. We came top of the class back then.

Today, our collaboration on an international level marks the beginning of a new era. There is so much value we can add to smallholder farmers across Africa.

We went outside the hotel grounds to have lunch.

While speaking with the attendants, we noted that the price for virtually every item on the menu was really high.

For me, it was way too high. Those who have read my first article about why I relocated to Benin Republic will have noticed my deliberate emphasis on low cost of food in that small country.

Dele made a valid point that we were only going to eat there for that day, and would not return afterwards. I agreed with him, but noted that it still pained me anyway, and that if I’d been alone (and the one paying), I’d have chosen to go elsewhere.

Like I told him, it’s not just about the money.

For me, I find it greatly upsetting that food should differ so sharply in pricing between two neighbouring countries. That’s why anytime I visit Nigeria these days, and I have to buy food outside the home, I feel like I’m throwing money away.

My experiences with lack of money, and the discovery that I can get good quality food, in Cotonou, at almost a third of the price I pay in Nigeria, makes it hard for me to do otherwise.

For me, that money could be put to better use, if not saved away for the future. Dele expressed agreement with what I said by recalling a Yoruba saying that water dripping slowly, if left to continue, will eventually fill up a room, should it find no outlet to escape through.

At that point I let on that people have criticized me for being miserly, or even stingy with regard to money.

In response I’ve often told them the anecdote I read about John D. Rockefeller.

One day, John D. Rockefeller used a pay phone to make a long distance call. He’d put in a number of one dollar coins to cover his call. By the time he was done, and he checked how long he’d been on, he realised he’d used up less time than he’d estimated he would. His calculations showed he would get at least one dollar change back from the machine.

But after he hung up and waited a while, nothing happened. So he knocked on the pay phone, shook it, thinking the coin got stuck. Still no money came out.

Determined, he dialled the operator and said “Hi. I just made a call and spent less time that I’d put coins in the pay phone for. But despite all my efforts, it’s refused to produce my one dollar coin change!”

The operator apologized and said “Can you tell me what your name is Sir?”

He was about to say “John D. Rockefeller”, when it occurred to him that being a millionaire, the operator would be shocked to discover he was the one complaining about a mere one dollar of change!

So he said “Never mind. I’ll let it go.” And he hung up.

John D. Rockefeller explained that in the Rockefeller family, every child from a very early age is taught to have a very high regard for the smallest unit of money.

They are made to realise that every dollar adds up, and must therefore be well accounted for when spent.
This attitude is what has helped the Rockefeller family preserve its massive wealth from generation to generation.

I have adopted that mental attitude, and actively coach my kids to do the same thing at every opportunity.

When you can eat a good, satisfying meal for N100, why spend N200? Why not spread that N200 over 2 decent meals?

And it’s not just with food. In every area of life, the same rule should apply.

Anyone who wants to build long lasting wealth will adopt this approach to handling money.

Quit Your Job? (Some Web Marketing Ideas for Your New Business)

So, you finally bit the bullet and resigned your appointment with your employer after years of meritorious service, to start your own consultancy? And you did it while the ovation is still loudest? Good for you! Most people rarely get rich working for others. No matter what service you want to offer, the web can boost your expert status so people feel more confident hiring you.

I propose the following:

1. Setup a proper website in your name using a Content Management System (Joomla or WordPress) – that will make it easy for you to manage the site yourself (just like you use MS Word or Facebook). See an example I did for a Cameroonian client (a Legal Consultant) in Cotonou: www.nanaarnold.com

This means you will purchase a domain name – e.g. www.yourname.com (long overdue!!) – for $10 approx – for ONE year.

And you would also purchase a hosting account – from $40 approx – for ONE year.

2. Once the site is up, you must use it to get people to take action to contact you. That requires writing new content regularly, and using preferably zero cost channels to promote it. That’s where the work will be.

My method is to use writing to attract visits via the search engines. So, I recommend you have a blog where you’ll publish your new articles and other reports. The purpose will be to establish yourself as an authority in your field or interest or expertise.

As your “content” volume increases, those who encounter it online, who fit your target audience profile, will be won over by it.

They will come ready to engage you. My blog has been central to my webmarketing success:

http://spontaneousdevelopment.com/sdnuggets/

Like mine, everything you do on your blog will be automatically linked to your Facebook outlet and your website. See my Excel-VB Solutions page www.tinyurl.com/tksexcelheaven. It has 95% membership from overseas. They talk about my works in their network i.e. free promotion! No wonder I’m getting more foreign enquirers about my Excel-VB driven farm business software.

You will also need to setup a promotional email newsletter which you will publish regularly, to  subscribers. It will boost your expert status.

Note that this approach will SAVE you a lot of marketing expense, and eventually boost your generation of quality sales leads.

It does not yield success over night. BUT it always works! You just need to persist.

If you could have served as long and successfully as you did with an employer before quitting, I believe you will be able to generate the QUALITY of content that will make people who need your services see you as a preferred provider.

Over time, they will seek you out by themselves. You will have less need to reach out to potential clients. But even when you do go out, this system will bean instrument you will use to win clients over with less effort, in less time and at less cost.

I call it the Development of a Web Marketing System.

TOTAL INVESTMENT REQUIRED (If I do it for you):

1. Domain Registration (1 year) and Website Hosting (1 year) – N7,500.00

2. Setting up your Web Marketing System (comprising your website, your blog and your promotional Facebook page) – N100, 000.00

IT WILL PAY FOR ITSELF

This approach will save you lots of business promotion expenses, and also help you win MORE paying clients. As an expert in your field of specialisation, you can also approach international organisations to write papers or even speak at conferences (for a fee too!).

An updated/quality content, online presence will make those you contact choose you over your rivals!
