1 of 2: PUBLIC SPEAKING – Being Likeable Can Cost You Success
When defending his title for the first time, under his new name (Muhammad Ali), the crowd roundly booed Cassius Clay and cheered Sonny Liston. Yet Ali knocked out Liston in round 1. Some claim it was a phantom punch (but that’s a whole other issue) – MY point is that YOUNG Ali’s self-confident, and cocky attitude, bordering on what some called “arrogance”, earned him lots of criticism.
At some point, he was dubbed “The Louisville Lip”.
But Ali never let the negativity get to him. He remained defiant in the face of it all, and stayed true to himself, doing good BOXING and TALKING while doing it – thus giving MORE entertainment!
That attitude of believing in himself, and NOT letting what others thought or said influence him to act contrary to his nature, led him on a confrontation path with the government, when they tried to draft him to fight in the Vietnam war.
Long story short, Ali was stripped of his title and banned from boxing. He spent some of his best years unable to compete instead giving public speeches on human rights and race etc – and that raised his profile beyond boxing, to national and even international levels.
He later won back his title and did so well that today, many decades on he is a LIVING legend LOVED the world over.
Funny isn’t it? The same guy who got booed as a “mouthy” young boxer is today hailed as the greatest boxer ever, with scores of his famous utterances quoted by people everywhere!
Ali refused to be cowed or intimidated into NOT speaking his mind. He refused to let others dictate what topic he spoke on.
He did it so consistently and so well, that some of his critics over time developed a grudging admiration for him, and eventually, most backed down!
Today, it’s hard to find any persons with anything but good to say about Muhammad Ali!
How does this apply to you as an expert-who-speaks?
Some time ago, I read a Facebook post by a trainer/speaker, that commenting on current affairs/politics was (for him) a taboo for public speakers, especially if they belonged to a particular body of speakers that I will leave unnamed here.
I DO NOT AGREE with that view at all!
It is in fact my considered opinion, that public speakers are actually best positioned to help society evolve to better heights by speaking intelligently on current affairs/politics!
Why?
Because the role they play, makes them function as thought/opinion leaders: which gives them potentially great power to INFLUENCE the thinking of MANY people at once!
Incidentally, if there is one issue that affects the well being of a public speaker’s target audience, it’s current affairs/politics.
A smart speaker will therefore want to arm him/herself with latest information regarding a society’s current affairs/politics, towards guiding the DELIVERY of his/her message there.
Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not asking you to go to a client company’s Management Conference and begin making polarising statements to the audience in your keynote speech!
No. That’s NOT what I’m saying.
What I AM saying is that, using your skill as a speaker, you can tactfully incorporate, where relevant and possible, your own thinking about the state of affairs in society, as it relates to the PURPOSE of the gathering you have to address at any point in time.
And sometimes that may cause you to NOT be liked (by some people).
The truth is however that if you focus too often on NOT rocking boats, you may end up NOT making lasting impact in a way that will make your audience reckon with you!
This is a sensitive topic, I know…
However, I’ve learnt a LOT from studying people who used public speaking to achieve greatness, like Muhammad Ali, Mahathma Ghandhi, Abe Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr. , Malcolm X etc.
You see, most of them achieved greatness because they did NOT shy away from PUBLICLY stating HARD TRUTHS, even when they knew (powerful) others could be upset.
They did not go out of their way to be “LIKEABLE”, especially when they saw justifiable cause!
Be a Speaker With a Conscience…& It’s Okay to be Opinionated, If You Have Conviction!
The great achievers I mentioned earlier understood the above truth, and that’s why they went about their purpose without FEAR!
A truly authentic expert-who-speaks must have a CONSCIENCE that cannot be bought and that WILL NOT be compromised!
I’ll end by paraphrasing myself -below – from a chat message I recently shared with an American – lady – friend (who is also a subscriber to this newsletter):
“Some people tell me I am opinionated. I just tell them when I’m convinced about something, I do NOT see any reason why I have to let someone else brow beat me to see it their way. They never like that…but…that’s just me. I accept others for being themselves, and so long as I know I’m not being un-reasonable, then I expect them to accept me for being ME. But then even the issue of being “unreasonable” remains a matter of personal perspective. Which is why I LOVE this quote credited to George Bernard Shaw: ‘The reasonable man adapts himself to the world: the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
