No. 110: Why You Need to Think With Your Whole Body (and How)!

**** **********

NB: If you ever find yourself wondering what else I’ve written, some days after you’ve read THIS Speaking Ideas newsletter I send out on a Monday, here’s what you can do to find out: Point your browser to www.spontaneousdevelopment.com/sdnuggets to read at least ONE new post added to my SD Nuggets blog on a different category from Tuesday till Saturday (sometimes even Sundays) in line with this publishing schedule :-)

What if you had something that could help you “sense” potential problems in relationships with new acquaintances, as well as established contacts? What if it could also give you useful hints towards achieving your valued goals?

AND, what if I told you that YOU ALREADY have IT in you?

I Ignored It for Almost 2 Years, & Paid a Painful Price

Most times that I’ve listened to, and/or acted on it, I’ve ended up much better off.

That’s why I always pay serious attention to it.

Whenever I’ve failed to do that, I’ve often experienced some stagnation – or even setbacks.

Example 1:

When I’m with people – new acquaintances or otherwise – it often subtly alerts me to insincerity, and even malice, that may be directed at me.

The uninitiated, who relate with me, may not know it.

But EVERYTHING that ANYONE says, thinks, feels or does (including writing) in relating with me, (most times) gets passed through that “filter” to get to me.

Many times that “feeling” (which actually permeates my entire being!) guides me to know what to believe, who to trust, when to say YES or NO etc.

And that has worked wonders for me in life.

Indeed, I continually succeed today, despite countless setbacks (and periodic attempts by detractors to pull me down over the past 10 years), because of it!

Example 2:

For almost 2 years – up till February 2013 – it kept telling me to relocate from Nigeria, to Benin Republic.

I kept “getting that feeling”, and yet I kept refusing to yield to it.

Guess what?

That roughly 20 month period was one of the most frustrating I ever had.

It was not that I did not do good work. But many things just never went right – often with the clients.

Over time, I began to avoid taking on new offline clients, and began focusing on online delivery of freelance writing and Excel-VB software development services, as well as products (e.g my books, and software).

But erratic power supply in Nigeria made working that way a punishing experience. It was so hard to carry on!

All this while, the subtle “hints” never stopped. It kept quietly telling me. At a point, I realized I had to “listen”, and do what “it” was telling me to do.

I eventually moved here in Benin Republic on 1st April 2013.

The first 3 months were tough.

My self-belief was pit to the test many times. But I held out, and eventually broke through.

Today, about 6 months on, the results I’m getting are much better than anything I got in the over 10 years I spent working from Nigeria.

That’s no exaggeration.

I enjoy much higher productivity. And I undergo less stress/strain. Mainly because I get more done with less effort, at less cost, in an environment devoid of perpetual annoyances!

And it’s mainly because I listened – and continue to listen – to IT.

What Is This “Thing” That’s Been Telling Me “Things”?

It’s called “Intuition”.

It can also be referred to as the “Sixth sense”.

I’d been haphazardly following its guidance for over 2 decades, without knowing it was often why I periodically excelled.

Then I began reading books that explained how making more conscious use of it facilitates better pursuit of one’s goals.

And I began doing it more deliberately.

Here’s a warning for those with “fast-food” mental attitudes:

This does not work instant wonders.

One must do it with persistence and diligence, over time to get the results.

There is a learning process.

So keep that in mind, and don’t expect overnight miracles.

To Use Your Intuition, You Must “Think With Your Whole Body”

Renowned mentor of some of the world’s highest paid International Speakers, Burt Dubin – in a Speaker Match Radio show with Brian Kaplovitch – once spoke in elaborate detail about how to use your intuition.

NB: I represent Burt Dubin as sole agent across the African continent, for sales of his speaker mentoring products and services.

That show’s edition was titled “Conquer Your Demons (What They Don’t Teach You At Speaking Business School)”.

Below is a verbatim transcript I made, of excerpts from the audio recording.

Read it, and apply the wisdom Burt shares in there.

NB: If you do so, YOU will NEVER be the same again. If the foregoing makes me sound like a preacher, take it as a sign that you should BELIEVE me :-)

“What most of us do not know is that your body – this is every person – not just you, everyone.

Everyone’s body is a sensitive receiver. Did you ever deal with someone and then say to yourself, “Oh that guy’s a pain in the butt”? Or a pain in the neck?

Your body is telling you there’s something wrong…what’s wrong with this picture?

Albert Einstein, the great Einstein said (when asked about the source of his cognitive skill), he said: “Well most people just think with their brain. I think with my whole body. I think with my whole body. “

I have learned that…now this is me speaking not Einstein, though I have his picture in my office, my grandmother gave me, an etching of Albert Einstein that she got way back…waaay way back 1932 when he spoke for her at Dorso Jephard (?) in Philadelphia.

That’s another great story, but we’ll set that one aside.

He said I think with my whole body.

Let me tell you what Emerson said. Ralph Waldo Emerson.

He said “What lies before you, and what lies behind you, are as nothing compared with what lies within you.”

Emerson was a brilliant, brilliant man.

And Dr Willis Harman, now alive and then the president of the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, way way back before I was a member of NSA, I was a member of the Association for Transpersonal Psychology.

And I’d listen to him say these words, oh my lord late ’70’s – 1979 or 80 perhaps, into 82 to 83 and ah. And he gave a whole program on intuition.

And he said “Listen to no other voice”.

Now for whatever it may be worth, throughout my speaking career, as well as before my speaking career, this has been what guided every decision that I made.

Listening to my inner voice.

When 18 years ago Brian,  almost 19 years ago now, I was then a very successful speaker doing oh maybe 75 gigs a year for 3,500 to 5 o 6 sometimes 8.

And I got this intuition, saying I should no longer be doing this. I should abandon my speaking career and become a mentor for speakers. That was back in 1989…89!

I listened to the inner voice, I became a mentor for speakers and I may well be the best one in the world.

I’m not burdened with modesty. You know what Napoleon said? He said:

“Modesty is for people who have something to be modest about.”

So listen to your inner voice, and I’m saying this to everyone on the call.

Listen to your inner voice. Do what your inner voice tells you to do regarding your career, regarding your life, regarding your topic, regarding your market, regarding the speaking practice that you involve yourself in – all of that.

Listen to your inner voice – you will not be wrong.

How to Establish Truth, and Experience Less Doubt

In this age of rapid technology and information driven changes, news spreads like wildfire. Good news, bad news…as well as INCORRECT/outright FAKE news (aka rumours).

I consider that last one the most dangerous – because the damage it does can be so difficult to repair.

We’ll never be able to foresee who will send out such news, or when. That’s why we’ll be better off learning how to intelligently sieve any news that comes our way for truth.

That would reduce the spread of rumours that could cause problems, or even ruin another person’s life.

Is It Normal for Us to Believe The Worst of Ourselves?

No it’s not. I know this based on my childhood experiences – and also from closely observing children.

We are born as very positive minded human beings. Schooling and societal conditioning are what push us towards negative mindedness.

Stop and think about this for a moment. I mean STOP right now.

Think back to when you were young. You will likely recall that you thought good of everyone, believed everyone liked you, and that they would treat you well etc.

With the exception of people who grew up in abusive homes, this was the case for most of us.

However, for many people, all that changed as we grew into adulthood…sometimes subtly.

A quotable quote I recently read stated that most adults readily believe bad things they hear (or read) about another person. They rarely even bother to ask questions to be sure it’s true.

But when it’s a good thing, these same persons insist on seeing (or hearing) proof, to believe!

Looking back, my experiences suggest it’s true…

Don’t Let Society Change You Into Who You’re Not: Use Your 6th Sense to Establish Truth!

However, I refuse to let that influence me as a person.

I refuse to let it change me into who I am not.

That’s why I personally only use hear say as a guide, in my interpersonal interactions.

To establish truth, I have learnt, from experience, to depend heavily on my 6th sense (listening to my deepest feelings, and acting based on them) – each time I relate with others.

This is a simple common sense strategy usable by anyone. We were all born with this ability.

And that’s why it remains a mind boggling mystery, at least to me, why most people fail to use it.

I use it, it IS the number one reason why I never have doubts that make me get worried or anxious.

Using My 6th Sense to Successfully Practice Location Independent Entrepreneuring (True Story)

It’s almost the end of my third month in a new country, where the language spoken (French) is VERY different from that spoken in my country of origin, and birth.

When I arrived in Benin Republic on April 1st, 2013, I knew nobody. Not one person. I came in by road, from Lagos, carrying a backpack, a traveller’s bag…and the intermediate French language skill I acquired in 1999.

Today, I’ve successfully integrated myself into this French speaking African society. I now serve a local (Web Marketing) client – who has already given me a referral.

Tayo Solagbade - Location Independent Multipreneur

But it took some doing. Among other things, my 6th sense helped me identify those who wanted to exploit me. With time, I used it to nurture relationships with the right people, till things clicked in place.

I also continue to serve clients back in Nigeria. They deposit (or transfer) cash into my account, in Nigeria, and I deliver the promised product or service.

Recently, a long time Nigeria-based client’s website hosting expired. We’d known each other for over 5 years, so he trusted me enough to ask his staff to make the payment into my account.

I did not disappoint him. Within minutes, I got the site back online.

He probably trusts me MORE now, as a result!

I’m also interacting with prospects who’ve sought me out online (from the UK, Nigeria, Philippines etc).

I Was Doubted & Second-Guessed (I Still AM!)

My decision to work from a different country raised many questions. Regular power supply and political stability here in Benin were what won me over. Those simple benefits are still lacking in Nigeria.

Then there was(is) the African dream I had(have), of using Location Independent Entrepreneuring, to access target audiences with my products and services.

My explanations did (and do) not satisfy everyone however. Including some in my family.

But it’s not just them…

Since I got here, a number of people have enquired about my popular Feed Formulation Handbook and software. But none have – so far – been unable to convince themselves to pay…

They probably wonder: “Why has he moved to Benin?” “What’s he running away from? Maybe he’s done something wrong and hiding”. In essence, they are not convinced they’ll get the promised items.

I cannot blame them. In this part of the world, it seems Digital Nomads are still considered “freaks”. Well, they’ll have to accept me (us!) – eventually :-)

Use Your 6th Sense & Avoid Losing What You Need Due to Baseless Doubts and Fears!

Such people (and even you!) can however avoid needless worry in forging your relationships.

Simply practise using your 6th sense, during your verbal and non verbal communication with others.

In no time, you’ll have honed your skill well enough to depend on it for decision making.

And do not forget to teach your child how to do the same, as she grows up!

To Succeed You Need Your Sixth Sense to Unmask Insincerity

To achieve significant and authentic success, you need to forge relationships with sincere persons – in your business or personal life. Avoid dealings with persons who will constantly be on the lookout for ways to exploit you for their own benefit. Instead, actively seek out people with whom you can enjoy mutually rewarding relationships. This article explains how to achieve the foregoing using a combination of street wisdom and your intuition – your sixth sense.

But How Can You Accurately Know Who Is Sincere, And Who Is Not?

Good question. The key word there being “accurately”.

I offer ideas you can use, based on my personal experiences and achievements. But I’ll also be the first to admit there is no fool proof strategy you can adopt.

However, I believe that with practice, you can hone your ability to sniff out insincerity. And it won’t matter how well the person “afflicted with it” tries to mask it. You’ll know it’s there from the way you “feel”. You’ll just know it.

We have a saying in my language (Yoruba) that goes thus:

“Eefi ni iwa.”

Translated contextually, in English, it means:

 “Character is like smoke.”

And you know what smoke is like. Even before it inevitably manifests visually, it often makes its presence known through its “smell” (depending on the kind of smoke).

Some people have naturally sensitive noses. Others do not. However people can be trained to detect flavours in beer at low levels. In the same way, a person can consciously develop his other senses to better perceive changes in his environment.

Insincerity – like smoke – is also intangible. To detect its presence one must be able to perceive it. How well you do this could determine whether or not you succeed. Otherwise you could leave yourself open to negative influences that may deny you progress.

Not Every “Nice” Person Is Really Nice…

For instance in business some people may choose to get close to you, so they can ask you to give your services free – since they are “friends”. And they can be very persuasive – even using emotional blackmail to get you to do what they want.

Take note that it never occurs to them that you need to turn a profit to grow your business, and support yourself or your dependants. Even when it does occur to them, they never let it matter enough give up their antics!

Understand that not everyone that smiles at you, and calls you a “friend” really has good intentions. Once you discover any person is like that, I recommend you talk to him about it, and see if he changes.

If he does not, my advice to you is this:  FLEE (and I mean that literally!) as far away as possible from that person. He most probably belongs to the group that will use others and dump them. They suck the life out of those naïve enough to make themselves available in that manner. You don’t need that kind of person.

You Have A Powerful Sixth Sense that’s (Probably) Lying Dormant – Revive It!

I refer to your intuition. Your sixth sense. The ability to perceive the unseen or unspoken or hidden. We were all born with it. And it’s still there. Even now.

Humans have always been deeply spiritual beings from the earliest days. However, the love of ease, fed by our development of modern day conveniences has made us “forget”.

Those innate abilities are still in us – lying dormant. The few and far between amongst us who choose to revive them often go on to record achievements that the rest marvel at.

I urge you to become one of those few. Begin to pay attention to your inner voice. And learn to follow its lead in interacting with others. It will guide you – more frequently – to safe and profitable business relationships.

It will also help you detect negative changes in relationships e.g. a client who used to be good, but who for whatever reason has decided to try pulling a fast one on you. You will find that your sixth sense will set off a hidden alarm in your head to alert you.

Your success in business will greatly depend on your ability to hone that God-given intuitive ability. It can be a powerful tool for identifying insincere people in your life.

To Excel, Use Street Wisdom Guided by a Finely Honed Sixth Sense

It’s not a pleasant truth, but it is the reality. Face it. The world in not fair – never will be.

If you’re good to others, that’s no guarantee others will be good to you! (I still struggle with this concept because I find it hard to believe some people won’t be good.)

So don’t fret over the fact that it happens. Simply learn how to deal with it when it does. That’s what this article offers you: How to use street wisdom in conjunction with well developed intuition, to make the most of your relationships.

Developing the former (i.e. street wisdom) is very simple – really.

All you need to do is become a very dedicated student of human nature. Carefully study (and tactfully test) those you interact with.

What they do, and not what they say, will often reveal who they really are. Use what you learn as a guide in your future interactions with them, and others. That’s all it takes.

Developing your intuition has already been covered in the earlier part of this write-up.

So it’s up to you now.

Your creator expects you to manifest the full potential you have in you. Go out there and unleash yourself on the world, to make it a better place. You already have all that you need to deal effectively with anything the world throws at you along the way.

Good luck!
