No. 127: Master FEAR, and You’ll Achieve Mastery In Any Field

What are you afraid of? Fear is experienced by everyone. And that includes experts – be they self-employed or in paid employment. Sadly, traditional schooling teaches us little about how to handle it successfully. This issue of my newsletter offers practical insights that can help you.

You could be trying to launch a speaking service, as an expert in your field. Or maybe you’re a prospective retiree, and considering what venture to invest in.

Stop letting thoughts of possible failure, or loss, hold you back. Start small if necessary. Then gradually scale up your efforts. You’ll be better off in the end.

Here’s How/Why I Know This is True

Last week I spent time watching some of Sir Ken Robinson’s videos in which he talks about the need to overhaul our traditional schooling system to meet the needs of today’s fast changing world.

Nothing he said in those videos was essentially new – to me at least.

Like I read somewhere, degrees are now a dime a dozen.

If we, especially here in Africa, were to be honest with ourselves, we would admit the fact that universities from Europe and America are NOT just discovering potential students with intellectual competence abound in Africa. Instead, their rapidly increasing focus on recruitment from here, is (partly) a reflection of the drastic drop in enrolments happening in the societies they are based!

The truth is traditional schooling is no longer as attractive as it used to be.

Young people today have grown up with enough tools and resources to discover that on their own. Especially those in the developed societies who have ready access to eye-opening information. They are refusing to be shoved down the same paths their parents and grandparents were sent decades before.

This resistance is not simply due to typical stubbornness of youth. Instead many have increasingly observed that so many of their peers are adopting new strategies to developing real world competence, Indeed, very many have modified the original definition of success to suit their own preferences.

Like a home-schooled American teenager told his audience at TEDx, to him, success means being happy.

That (i.e. happy) is what he wants to be when he grows up.

So the purpose of the education he’s chosen (in collaboration with his parents) to get, is to identify what he can do to be happy – while being able to cater for his needs and those of any dependants.

This is the way I have always felt!

It’s why over 12 years ago I announced to close friends (and to my Montessori certified mother’s horror) that I would not let any of my kids start school before they clocked 5 years old.

I also said they would all be challenged to think outside the box, and engage in extracurricular aimed at helping them identify and nurture any talents or unique skills they possess.

My argument was that I had found very little use for my excellent academic credentials in the real world I chose to enter.

In other words, outside the controlled environment of paid employment, I discovered most of what I knew did not serve much useful purpose.

So, I had to put them aside and learn all over again.

But what really struck me was that I successfully did that, without needing to go back to a formal schooling environment.

I also noticed that while I was in paid employment, what made me most successful was NOT my academic ability, but (mainly) my ability to use my spreadsheet programming skills (developed in my spare time) to solve real life problems faced by my company.

And I noticed that the better I got at it, the greater the recognition I got.

So much so that I got sent on assignments and given opportunities that people who joined the company many years ahead of me had not been considered competent to handle.

It happened again and again.

The company apparently valued people who produced results they wanted – not just credentials!

All of that convinced me I did not need to go back for a Master’s degree.

Funny enough, I was working as a Brewer, and later Training Manager in Guinness. But I’d studied Agricultural Extension Services. So there was also the issue of what area I’d be able to obtain a masters degree in, since the company (Guinness Nigeria), had recruited and trained me as a Graduate Trainee Brewer.

That process took about 12 months.

And subsequently I sat and passed the professional Associate Membership Examinations of the UK’s Institute and Guild of Brewing (a certification I later discovered to offer ME little value outside the company!).

So when my colleagues (fellow brewers) at the office began to tell me they were running Masters Programmes, I often asked them what use they felt it would serve.

Of course they looked at me as if I was crazy.

Yet they never gave me an answer that really made any practical sense. As far as I could see, getting a Masters degree would not make them do their jobs better (in most cases anyway). Only they could decide to do that.

Many times the knowledge or information to help them do that, was available in the workplace.

Therefore the idea of going back to get an extra degree never really cut it. But they did/do it anyway.

(NB: I’m NOT saying an M.Sc I useless. Just that it’s not everyone who really needs one.)

And they closed their eyes to the glaring evidence that those of us who refused to get extra qualifications still out-performed them!

This was the most amusing part of it for me.

I thought going to school was supposed to make us think smarter?

But how come well schooled people fail (or refuse) to see this consistent trend and learn from it?

I believe it’s because they are afraid.

They are afraid to be different. To think different, and to act along those different lies.

They afraid of doing so and failing. To be seen to have been wrong. To be laughed at for being wrong

To have their mistakes (or attempts to succeed via unconventional channels) criticised by close friends and relatives:

Example 1: “Haha, imagine Tayo thinking he could get paid any decent money to build Excel workbooks for people. See where that landed him!”

NB: Today, I (Tayo), get decent money to build Excel software for clients in different industries, and also sell my own custom Excel software.

Example 2: “Oh, have you guys heard? I just learnt Tayo’s saying he’s working to get paid 2,500 Euros write a research paper online while still based here in Nigeria. Does he know how many writers there are online? How can he be sure he’ll get chosen? And even if he is, will he ever see the money? What writing qualifications does he even have? Come to think of it, does he even have a Masters degree?”

NB: Today, it is on record that I DID get paid for writing that 4,000 word agribusiness Case Study by the international organisation based in Holland.

Even if no one asks them such potentially disempowering questions, they subsconsciously ask themselves!

In other words, they either sabotage themselves, or let people do it for them.

Why?

Because that’s what traditional schooling teaches those who pass through it.

You are taught to think getting the approval of others is important to your well being. That if you do not get it, something is wrong with you. That if you go alone, you’re not normal. That if you think and act different from everyone else, you’re a wet blanket…or a freak.

Dear reader, let me tell you a secret: All those things I just outlined above are myths!

Totally false and misleading stuff. And if you’re honest with yourself, YOU have always sensed it. The truth has periodically picked at your conscience. You’ve always felt something was not right about what you were being told. But that fear kept you from acting on your feelings.

As an expert in your field today, the programming done on you decades ago is very likely still working its limiting effects on how you think and act.

That’s why you want to do what others experts in your market do. You don’t want to rock the boat by trying something new, or unusual.

It’s why you put your creativity on hold so often.

It’s also why you’re scared to purchase solutions your colleagues show no interest it, but which you “feel” can help you (e.g. Burt Dubin’s mentoring service and products).

Those bright ideas you have scare you so much. You wonder what others would think if you used them.

Less (or UN) Schooled People Have Proven That Mastering Your Fears Can Yield Mastery in Life

Burt Dubin has coached some of the world’s highest paid and most successful speakers (like this one).

However, before becoming a mentor, he’d built highly successful careers in different fields (e.g. real estate, sales/sales management and public speaking).

He’s been around for over 3 decades, and has always been in the top leagues.

Yet, he points out on his website that he is a high school drop out!

The logical question for all of us who are NOT drop outs, but have had to learn from him is often:

Where did he get all this knowledge, know-how and wisdom he’s come to be renowned for over the last 3 decades?

That’s what tells us that we have MORE inside of us, waiting to be discovered, than we know!

The best educational system is the one that will help us unearth those hidden truths buried deep inside our subconscious.

The truths about ourselves in terms of the true abilities we have.

And of course the truth about fear…the fact that it only holds us back if/when we let it.

That we can, from today, learn to consciously put it aside and think/do anything we set our minds to.

The day we learn to do this, we’ll begin to effortlessly achieve mastery in any undertaking. Burt Dubin is just one example whose life demonstrates this truth. So many others exist in various fields.

You can be the next example that will inspire others.

Pursue additional schooling if you feel the need. But NEVER let fear be the reason you do that.

Otherwise, it will be an exercise in futility – and the mastery you seek could elude you…perpetually!

YOU are special. Do YOU know that? Many do not. Yet, as an expert in your field, convincing people you can help them requires showing you are different, unique…one of a kind. That you are SPECIAL!

People are attracted by that.

But many experts do not know (or they forget) that they are “special” (every human being IS). As a result, they frequently fail to show that side of themselves. This makes them get lost in the sea of formless “experts” clients choose from!

This issue of my speaking IDEAS newsletter discusses why/how letting the world see that you are different – and therefore special – can lead you to greater success.

1. The Creator is Never Afraid. You Never Should Be.

There are experts who play down their abilities for fear of criticism. They let others tell them that boldly showing what they can do amounts to being proud, or over ambitious.

But nothing could be further from the truth!

God wants every one of his creations to make the most of him or herself. When you can fly and you settle for hopping from tree to tree, you do the creator a major disservice.

He has given you the gift or talent to be much more. Are you making the best use of it?

Keep this in mind: Most times our unique abilities given us by the creator are not meant for us to use ourselves alone. Quite often we are required to develop them for use in serving others (e.g. our clients) and helping them make the most of themselves too!

As an expert-who-speaks, strive to discover and develop that which makes you special. And when you do, boldly show the world – via your learning events – how you can help them with it like your creator intended you to.

2. The Creator Always Acts True to Type. You Should Do The Same.

Acting true to type basically means walking our talk in every area of our lives.

The Christian bible asks a rhetorical question: “For what has darkness got to do with light”?

I like that question, because it clarifies one’s choices in life very easily. And you don’t even need to be a Christian to use it.

There is no midway when it comes to integrity. In relation to this, Burt Dubin once said “There is no partial virgin”. And he was right.

When presented with a choice between right and wrong, honesty and dishonesty, good and bad, any sincere person will know the correct decision to take.

Here’s a true story that illustrates the above point…

A fairly wealthy client once told me that if one is due to be paid say $1 million by a company, and the person to write the cheque demands for $100,000, it would be better to let him have it, rather than risk making him block the entire payment using his connections.

According to him, where ignorance is bliss, it is folly to be wise.

But I knew I would never accept such treatment. For over 2 decades I’ve felt this way. It however occurred to me that if I said nothing, he would assume I agreed with him.

I therefore felt compelled to let him know where I stood. So, in a respectful tone, and without sounding judgmental, I said:

“Ehm, Sir. I understand what you mean, and I really appreciate the point you make about one standing a risk of suffering major delays in getting paid (or even losing it all), especially in our kind of society. But I must be honest with you, and say that if anyone ever gives me the condition that I must give him/her a cut from payment due to me, I would not accept it.”

Taking the above stand, has in the past cost me friendships with well paying clients who engaged in that practice, and argued that there was no other way.

Yet I chose to act true to type – with faith – and tell this man the very same thing.

Know this: Never compromise on your values and morals. Doing so will cost you more than you can ever hope to gain. Your creator will open new doors of opportunities for you as needed, every time you act true to type with faith. Therefore in negotiating the terms of a proposed speaking gig with any decision maker, ALWAYS act true to type.

Over time, only people willing to deal with you on your preferred terms will be attracted to you. Take it from me – I live this stuff, and it works!

3. The Creator Increases Others. Emulate Him.

Never ever seek to diminish others – not even those who hurt you. If you do, what would make you different from them?

Only when you do the opposite will they stop and wonder: “What? He’s still willing to play fair, despite the nasty stuff I did last time? This guy is something else!”

And that will make it obvious you are definitely one of a kind i.e. SPECIAL.

Final Words: Emulating the Creator Will Make You Special…and Ultimately More Successful

I often tell people I meet that each day of my life is a miracle. Time and time again, strange – but positive – coincidences occur in my life.

They continually reassure me that one who stays consistent in acting true to type will be rewarded with whatever s/he seeks.

All that is required is faith, patience and a willingness to persist.

None of these three requires money to be had…meaning they are available to everyone…including YOU!

So, you have a limited budget to spend on promoting your speaking business? Well, the strategy described in this first issue of my Speaking IDEAS newsletter for 2013 is perfect for people who have that challenge.

Read on to learn how to get yourself favourably noticed by potential buyers of your speaking services, without burning a hole in your pocket.

First, Be Clear About Your Target Audience & Purpose

Who is your target audience? And what exactly can you do for them that others who do what you do cannot? You need to be clear about these two important issues from the start. Otherwise you could end up (as they say) barking up the wrong tree.

Then consider where/how you can reach your target audience most easily, and in their largest numbers. (I suggest a mix of online and offline strategies – more on this later.)

NB: If you need help doing the foregoing, Burt Dubin offers tested and proven guidance.

Once you’ve got the above sorted out, it becomes easier to develop and implement the strategy I propose below to reach and impact them, and get the response you want.

Next, Think and Act Differently From Others

Define and differentiate yourself from others who do what you do. Even if you know 1,000 other expert speakers in your chosen niche, you CAN still set yourself apart.

It starts by thinking and acting differently from them.

 “Who’s that?” is what we usually ask, when someone steps out from the crowd and does something previously unseen or unheard of. It could be something “exceptional” – or even “bad”. And sometimes it could just be “controversial”.

For our purposes doing something “good” or “controversial” will probably be best :-)

Example: Richard Branson & His Virgin Group Of Companies

Branson has revealed that he gets his company prime time news exposure by thinking and acting differently, so as to get favourably noticed.

Examples include his well publicised attempts to do things not done before e.g. attempting to set records in sailing etc.

It rarely matters whether Branson succeeds or fails in any of his audacious bids. By simply publicising his intention to achieve what most may consider an impossible goal, he often successfully gets himself into the news.

Ironically, some of the activities he engages in are sometimes not even directly related to the business he’s trying to promote. But they will often be relevant to current or future high profile interests (e.g. space travel) and therefore attract media attention.

What Branson does is to skillfully weave a message linking his company (e.g. by way of values) with the activity he’s getting attention for. That exposure then rubs off on his company – drawing attention to the products and services he promotes.

Another benefit is that he gets more invitations to speak. People want to hear (and ask him) how he did/does it.

Tools You Can Use To Get Yourself Noticed & Talked About

You don’t need to attain Branson’s celebrity status before you can use the same strategy to cost-effectively achieve your unique marketing goals.

I suggest developing and utilising the following resources:

  1. Your Branded Website: Marketing your speaking service can be enhanced by using a website. It can be done on a shoe string budget too. Clearly state the benefits to potential clients – and include your About, Contact, and other pages.
  1. Your Branded Blog: Don’t stop at having a website. Add a WordPress based blog to it. (Bold emphasis on WordPress is deliberate. It’ll make things easier!). Publish new updates and interact with visitors/prospects who read your writing.
  1. Your Branded Content: Commit to constantly creating NEW articles, newsletters, books, as well as video and audio resources. Distribute them via 1, 2, above as well as 4 and 5 below.

    NB: Keep in mind the need to “stand out” from the crowd. Many people write articles and books. But it’s what you write. The ideas you put forward. Your unique message – and the VALUE it adds to readers. That’s the key to ultimately getting noticed and talked about.

    Add to that your demonstrated consistency in churning out new content to the same or possibly higher standard – and sooner than later, people WILL start talking about you.

  1. Your Branded Social Media: Be sure to integrate social media into the above. For instance, get your new updates to appear on your social media profiles.
  1. Your Branded Offline Marketing: Make sure your calling cards, flyers and other print marketing media refer contacts to your online resources (1 to 4) above.

My use of the word “branded” in 1 to 5 is for deliberate emphasis. Remember that the whole idea is to stand out from the crowd. So, let your branding be unique: Logos, taglines, graphics – all should enhance your uniqueness and appeal.

There should be little chance of a potential client mistaking someone else for you!

It’s NOT About How Much Money You Have!

Like I said at the start of this write-up, the strategy I advocate you adopt is perfect for people who have limited funds to spend promoting their speaking services.

(Psst: It actually leaves more money in your pockets. And that would possibly be better spent getting guidance from a competent mentor on how to find the right market to promote your speaking service to! Remember what I said about not barking up the wrong tree?)

We periodically hear of people achieving fame simply by putting up a creative video clip on Youtube.com that subsequently goes viral (or publishing an e-book that becomes a bestseller).

Today’s PC and Internet technology makes it possible for any willing person to cost-effectively get noticed and talked about.

Final Words: How This Strategy Got People Talking About My Farm Business Support Service

I feel a need to end with a personal example. Not to brag. But just to illustrate the many REAL ways in which using this strategy can work well for you.

In 2006 , I decided to set myself apart from other providers of support services to farm business owners and other stakeholders. Instead of offering the same general services, I identified areas I could help them develop and implement concepts/tools to manage their farm operations more productively in line with best practices.

First I published an authoritative handbook on how to use the diagrammatic Pearson Square Computation technique to formulate rations for livestock. Later I developed a Ration Formulator software (with tutorial videos) to accompany the handbook.

I then invested hundred of hours in regularly researching and writing what I labeled “Cost-Saving Farm Business Ideas” articles on a similarly named website. Some of those articles were submitted for syndication to the Ezinearticles.com directory.

The results have been phenomenal. I’ve come across farm business discussion forums where links to my website were posted in response to an enquiry by a user.

I’ve personally had many visitors to my website type “Referred by a friend” into the “How did you find this website?” field on my contact forms over the years.

There have also been phone calls, emails and face to face meetings. One day I walked in for a first meeting with a CEO. On seeing my face he said “I know you!”. A ew seconds later, he turned his laptop screen around to show me my Speaking IDEAS newsletter (with my picture in the header image), which he told me he read weekly!

Some people have contacted me after watching my videos, reading my articles, and then purchased products from me. Others have written to thank me for doing what I do…

Here’s a message sent in by a visitor (and later buyer) via my Farm Business Support website contact form:

“I would like to be notified when i(n)formation on rabbitry is published, and i would like to thank you for all your works they have been a source of inspiration for me and some of my friends.” – Burhan Akhalid, Accountant, Zaria, Kaduna State – Nigeria.

 

To put it simply: this strategy works. I therefore urge you to use it this year, to get more potential clients to discover you, and talk about you.
