“If It’s LEGAL and Works In Nigeria, It’ll Work ANYWHERE!” – Tayo K. Solagbade

My name is Tayo Solagbade, and I founded the Self-Development Academy(SDAc) to help individuals and groups of all types develop and implement strategies to successfully equip themselves to achieve their set goals every time. In this article, I provide insights into why SDAc chooses to use Nigeria as the main point of reference.

Nigeria Is A Peculiar Place. SDAc(Self-Development Academy Limited) Is Nigerian.

Nigeria needs Nigerians to solve her problems. We can borrow ideas from other societies, but only Nigerians who have a sound understanding of the complex nature of social factors influencing the highly unpredictable, unusual events that occur daily, can successfully adapt such ideas to develop lasting, sustainable solutions that will make life better for the average Nigerian.

Since I started out as an entrepreneur, to pursue my dream of providing Self-Development education for people passionately driven to be their best at what they do, I have come to the sobering realisation that Nigeria, my country, has many social peculiarities that severely limit the ability of even her most gifted and competent citizens to follow an honest path to achieve authentic and reproducible success.

Let me explain by drawing a comparison with developed societies. Americans for instance have many seasoned experts and practitioners dedicated to the work of developing the human resources and intellectual capital of their country. They’ve been at it for years – decades in fact. So have other developed nations. We in Africa have always trailed – many of us very far – behind. Business Schools and universities in Europe, America and Asia yearly churn out socially relevant research findings that make life better for their people – many times even for us in Africa!

In contrast, our business schools typically focus on recycling learning events from their overseas counterparts for us here – even when the socio-cultural context of application is inappropriate! Research if at all done by these business schools, is hardly ever relevant to the needs of our immediate environment.

I have often wondered…Why it is that the latest way of doing anything always comes from overseas? Why can’t we have gurus from this part of the world telling the rest of the world what the future holds, where we should all be looking for better results etc?(We have a few gurus doing this but most, on closer examination are often not home-grown, and have benefited from considerable exposure to developed societies).

My answer: Because too many of us Nigerians living in Nigeria, are intellectually indolent – too lazy to engage in sustained intellectual pursuit of continuous improvements in our various fields. That’s why we are content to sit back and accept whatever comes from the developed societies – even when sometimes what is being sent to us was created using material obtained directly from, or around us! The truth is that Nigeria and many African countries lack organisations that provide support systems toward enabling better quality of life for people living in them.

The SDAc Is NOT An NGO, But Will Facilitate Work Done By Them And Others.

The SDAc is profit-focussed, and NOT a charity. We have however developed a strategy to enable us empower different classes of people by leveraging our creative digital business products and services delivery arm – CB Solutions(Creative Business Solutions). This strategy will enable us provide interested individuals and groups(including the disadvantaged and/or needy) with access to our coaching, educational and empowerment programs at highly affordable rates. To put it simply, we will offer our commercial clients attractively bundled/priced products and services in exchange for their active contribution to the successful pursuit of our people development and empowerment goals.

The SDAc aims to explore, discover, document and offer to interested persons, tested and proven solutions to the various challenges faced by individual Nigerians(in and out of paid employment), many of whom currently feel they have no chance of ever making their dreams come true. I have seen different international charity organisations and donor agencies dole out large dollar grants towards various so-called development programmes, but as most who live in Nigeria and Africa know, very little sustainable results have been achieved as a result of the work done by these bodies. Not because they are not sincere or fail to work hard, but because the approach adopted was inappropriate.

I am a Nigerian – and so are my wife and kids. I do not want my children fleeing their country to seek success and fulfillment elsewhere. I realise that no foreign organisation or country can really truly help my country empower its people as well as we could if we really tried. We need Nigerians and Africans to develop their own solutions to the peculiar challenges of their societies, and STOP waiting – with cupped hands – on developed nations to hand-out various aids which only increase our dependence on them.

As a person who has all my life used self-taught skills to get ahead in virtually every area of endeavour I have ventured into, I have become convinced that people who truly desire to take their destiny into their own hands cannot afford to WAIT for their government or that of other countries to give them the support they need. This is because the reality from past experiences is that people in government are not likely to do the right things for as many people as need it – at least the way Africa is today. Every person who desires to achieve her dreams must be prepared to seize the initiative and look inwards to find the will and courage to pursue that objective with perseverance. Every person who wishes to live a future of their dreams must practise Self-Development.

I believe that if more individuals in our society begin to practice Self-Development the way SDAc will show them, it will only be a matter of time before we have a rapidly growing army of multi-skilled, adaptable, highly motivated and successful people who know why it is important to multiply themselves in others so as to reduce the latter’s dependence on them and so make the society flourish. That’s what happens in developed societies – and that’s why many Africans want to go there! I KNOW that we can create a similar environment here if more people learn how to become authentic successes who know how to make their success contagious and who give back tangibly to the society that makes them, so that others may benefit.

"If It’s LEGAL And Can Work In Nigeria, Then It’ll Work ANYWHERE!"

"..the biggest challenge facing most African nations is to creatively adapt ideas to their unique environment.." – Mr. Patrick Boateng, Adviser for Africa, US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) at the African Internet Summit and Exhibition(AFRINET) 2002, held in Abuja, Nigeria.

Lastly, because I believe Nigeria in many ways represents to a great extent the variety of what can be found across the African continent, and also because I know that the peculiarities of the environment extant in Nigeria present more daunting challenges than will be found in most other places, I am convinced that any solution successfully implemented here will be easily adapted to other places which are burdened with less limiting social circumstances. Nigeria for SDAc is therefore like a test-center. From here, solutions that can help other societies(developing or developed) will be conceived based on (socially relevant and practical) research/experience, then tested, and if proven useful disseminated to areas they can provide sustainable "use-value". That’s why we say: "If it’s LEGAL, and can work in Nigeria, then it’ll work ANYWHERE!"

Can Someone Really Steal Your Business Idea?

My answer to the above title-question is NO, for the simple reason that short of their being psychic, others around you are unlikey to be able to "see" an idea you originate in exactly he same way you see it. Worrying that someone will "steal" your idea will only cause you needless anxiety, and could even discourage you from taking your idea to the next level.

Read this article to understand why you must not let this happen to you, if you want to be able to look back in future and feel that you lived a truly fulfilled life.

As far back as I can remember, I have always had an intense desire to explore and investigate the way things are, with a view to discovering what new thing(s) could be developed.

This usually meant that I sometimes found a need to challenge traditional ways of thinking and/or doing things.

That offended many people.

Unfortunately (for them), I was never someone who feared confrontation. I’m not sure how this will come across to the reader, but if I were to be honest, I would say I usually feel better, and perform at my peak, when I know that most people around me do not agree with what I’m trying to do.

I honestly often get the motivation to do something which others say is not possible, but which I believe in, just from the knowledge that they don’t think I’ll succeed! :-)

How does this relate to worrying that someone will steal your idea?

A lot I tell you! The truth is that whenever I expressed my new ideas to those around, most people simply reacted by disagreeing. Few would try to really consider what I had said/proposed in an objective light.

In fact, some would say they understood me, and then proceed to try and make me “see” why what I was proposing was wrong!

So, you see, when you come up with YOUR idea for a business, oftentimes, only you might see the idea in the way you see it. No one else (or VERY few others) can possibly see it exactly the way you see it – and even those who see what YOU see would NOT be capable of thinking about implementing it EXACTLY the way you intend. That’s where – and why – you’ll always have the edge!

Evidence that the above is true abounds in society, and even influences story lines used in movies – which in truth, quite often mimic real life occurrences in society.

For instance, the "evil genius" in a movie, who wants to own the secret of the new formula being developed by the "famous" chemist finds it necessary to kidnap the latter and force him to work in a hidden fully equipped laboratory until a breakthrough is recorded.

Very rarely will you find a person who has a bias for "ideas theft" willing to expend "intellectual glucose" to independently arrive at the potentially valuable end s/he suspects another person is aiming to arrive at. Such people are just too mentally lazy – and are always on the lookout for shortcuts to getting what they desire.

That’s also why they CANNOT steal YOUR idea.

Even when you hand all that you know to them, they still would not be able to take it and run to the finish line. The simple reason is: they lack the unique insight into the subject, and would really struggle to understand it the same way YOU do, talk less of implementing it the way YOU would.

The implication: they would not be able to get the results you could. In essence, they cannot really "steal" your ideas successfully from you!

The reason why the foregoing happens is that you are unique as a human being. And depending on how well you have trained your mind to work, you will be able to take your idea and implement it in a way that only you could possibly conceive.

Yes, it is true that this line of thinking or argument is not fully applicable to all situations.

In certain cases, it is logical that the first person to get into the marketplace might reap the greatest rewards. However, it is also true that many times someone has entered into an existing market, and carved a very profitable niche by doing what others are doing a bit differently, and in a way that is difficult to copy.

An example is Fred Smith’s overnight delivery service idea – Federal Express (Fed Ex).

As I said earlier on in this article, that’s where – and why – YOU have the edge!

So, stop worrying that someone is lurking around trying to steal your ideas.

Don’t fret when you learn that someone is trying to launch a new product or service that (appears to be) similar to, or exactly the same as that you are about to start. They cannot think about(or implement) it exactly the way you would.

By all means take every possible precautionary measure to protect your work from prying eyes, and maintain as much confidentiality as possible about it for as long as you deem necessary.

However, DO NOT let the thought or fear of others doing something similar to what you are doing "paralyse" you.

Remember at all times, that except they can gain direct access to the thoughts that you have about your work so as to discover how best to go about developing and implementing your idea, they CANNOT possibly do it the way you intend to, or as well as you would.

You owe it to yourself to develop and implement your unique ideas to the fullest possible extent.

Don’t deny yourself – and the rest of society – of the opportunity of adopting a new way of thinking and/or doing things, that could change all our lives for the better, possibly even forever.

So take action to start that new business today, or work harder to develop that new idea or invention. It might just be the next revolution the world is waiting for.

PS: If you still have any doubts about whether you have what it
takes to take your idea to great heights, maybe the words of Thomas Edison can encourage you to believe more in yourself:

"If we all did the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves." – THOMAS A. EDISON

If You Lack Capital, Intelligent Multipreneuring Can Help You Succeed!

Much of this article probably goes against ideas held by majority of people, but the truth is that when a person is willing, that which the majority regards as impossible, can become that which can be done with adequate intelligent effort.

In our daily conversations certain expressions we use(such as “man-of-many parts”, “multi-talented” “utility player”, “multi-skilled”, “wears many hats” etc) indicate that we acknowledge that some of us have such abilities – and are therefore potential Multipreneurs. However, sometimes human beings tend to question and/or resist attempts by such individuals to make use of their skills in a formal manner e.g. in business.

This article offers suggestions based on real-life experiences about how a person can increase chances of securing needed financing, by intelligently applying his/her multipreneurial abilities.

WARNING! In order to get maximum value from this article, the reader must keep an OPEN mind free from the influence of whatever societal myths s/he is familiar with about doing more than one thing at a time.

No. 170: Achieve Speaking Success Using Your Audience’s Local Proverbs & Stories

Popular Yoruba proverb: “Èhinkule l’ òtá wa, ilé ni aseni ngbé” [Meaning: “The enemy lies in wait in the backyard.  The traitor lives in the home”. Read story-based interpretation in photo below].To speak successfully, one must connect emotionally and intellectually with an audience. Pastor Tunde Bakare is a speaker who does that effortlessly using local proverbs, songs etc.

Few Nigerian adults do not know this small framed but fiery personality that is Bakare…

Over the years, his has remained a voice of reason, integrity and courage in the face of growing socio-political decay across the Nigerian landscape. Even when lacking support from peers and associates, Bakare has continued to speak out as the conscience of the nation.

Despite being an individual, as far as speaking the truth and demanding the right things be done are concerned, Bakare frequently makes himself heard, and taken seriously.

But that’s not because he speaks louder than others.

Instead, it’s because he is skilled at speaking with impact – by making smart use of the English language, in combination with local proverbs, songs, and folktales to get his points across.

A good way to appreciate Bakare is to listen to him speak at any gathering (political rallies, business conferences, religious events etc)

His prowess in use of the English as a lawyer is readily apparent. At the 2014 National Conference, he shone like a thousand stars in the way he articulated his views.

As a result he won over delegates from different sides of the divide on to his line of thinking. So much so that they adopted a set of ideals he conceived for reorientation of all citizens.

But what really sets Tunde Bakare apart, is the way he readily injects local (often Yoruba) proverbs and songs – into his delivery.

He uses them to drive home his message with massive impact. Due to the passion with which he speaks, the audience is often so moved that when he bursts into songs, for instance, they simply join in!

Now, an interesting thing to note here is that even though he tends to use mostly Yoruba sayings and songs, his base of followers has always remained very diverse – cutting across tribal and religious boundaries.

For instance, in his church you will find people from different Nigerian tribes and ethnic groups. Same applies to the social change advocacy groups and organisations he leads.

I believe this is because he makes sure to interpret whatever he says for ALL to understand – using relevant analogies and illustrations.

Having himself been born into a Muslim home as a child, and then later converting to Christianity as an adult, he is able to leverage his knowledge of the Muslim religion to connect with mixed audiences.

It is for this reason that Bakare is so well known and respected today in today’s Nigeria – even amongst leaders of thoughts in opposing groups and organisations to those he belongs in religion as well as politics.

Most people who have heard him are in agreement that when Bakare speaks, it’s likely to be fair, and of potential benefit to all concerned.

You can often tell a great speaker by his/her ability to CONVINCE his/her audience to see things from his/her perspective as stated above.

This is why Tunde Bakare is a great speaker – especially as it relates to communicating successfully with audiences in societies like Nigeria/Africa.

To succeed as an expert-who-speaks in Africa (and/or to Africans), I recommend YOU make out time to carefully study Pastor Tunde Bakare, when he speaks.

It’s all well and good to study Barack Obama, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr. and other great speakers the world has known.

However, you must keep in mind that audiences in certain societies and cultures have unique peculiarities. And those peculiarities make it imperative to speak to them using adaptations of what one learns from foreign cultures, mixed with local content to yield the right “flavour”.

My experiences and observations convince me audiences in Africa need to be approached in that manner.

Indeed, my careful studies of speakers like Bakare convince me that’s why they succeed!

In essence I’m saying that Bakare’s speaking strategy of using local proverbs, songs, and folktales/anecdotes, if intelligently adapted for use by ANY expert-who-speaks, can dramatically boost his/her chances of connecting successfully with audiences in African cultures.

Final Words: This newsletter issue is a tribute to Pastor Bakare

Pastor Tunde Bakare recently celebrated his 60th birthday anniversary on 11th November 2014, and he was saluted by many top leaders from within and outside the country. As usual, he delivered a powerful message regarding his vision for Nigeria.

Such relentless passion drives this man, and I am continually inspired to emulate him!

That was why I joined in the rallies organized back in January 2012, which he spearheaded to demand for the reduction of the hiked petrol prices.

It is also why I continue to seize every opportunity to hear him speak. My family (parents, wife and kids) know I do not attend church. Yet, whenever they see Bakare on TV preaching a sermon, they know enough to call me!

You see, I ALWAYS listen to his messages, because he rarely fails to link his message with bringing about positive social change in society – politically etc.

It is for this reason that this issue of my newsletter is dedicated to him on his 60th anniversary.

But let me clear: I have NEVER met him and have no desire to meet Bakare on his 60th birthday anniversary

Instead, I’ve written this piece to let others who do not know him discover him, and to let those who already know him discover what they can LEARN from him about speaking impact-fully to influence positive change in others.

If we have more who SPEAK and ACT like Tunde Bakare, in Nigeria/Africa, even the sky will not be the limit for our societies!

Below: Screenshot from a new book I’m writing. It is designed to facilitate contextual comprehension of proverbs by persons with limited proficiency.

Click to view larger screenshot of page from my forthcoming book - 25 Storyfied Yoruba Proverbs for Children - Read story-based interpretation in photo below

Tentative Title: 25 “Storyfied” Yoruba Proverbs for Children – Vol. 1

Subtitle: A Story-Based Interpretation of 25 Popular Yoruba Proverbs for Persons with Limited Understanding of Yoruba

Note how I’ve used a story from an episode of a foreign movie series (Green Arrow) that I’ve been watching with my kids, to demonstrate an example of a real life situation in which the proverb I began this peice with, can be correctly used.

Most Nigerian adults today (myself included!) use the English language better than they do their own mother tongues. Even worse, many of us fail to teach our native languages to our kids. For our kids who do get taught, they often end up being far from proficient – use of proverbs being a crucial requirement for proficiency.

I recently decided to take action to help my kids become proficient in Yoruba. Incidentally, their mother has been coaching them in Igbo, her language, by speaking to them DAILY in that language – and they understand it better than they do Yoruba: That challenged me!

Also, I know that adding Yoruba (and later on French) to their Igbo and English speaking abilities can open doors for them. This is why I’ve been spending time with relatives, friends, even clients, gifted in the use of proverbs, to implement this project of mine.

The above screenshot shows the first of 25 proverbs to be published in volume 1 of the series.

I’ve NOT settled on a final for the book, but it will be published in my online store in both digital and physical formats before 31st December 2014. I plan to publish a new volume of 25 story based proverbs, EVERY quarter, till I get 100 proverbs.

Success Quotes Only Work When Diligently Acted Upon

I once heard a famous American celebrity quoted on radio by a presenter as follows:

"Success is the result of good judgement. Good judgement is the result of experience. Experience is the result of bad judgement".

The moral – according to the radio presenter – is that FAILURES we go through in life (often as a result of bad judgements we make) actually TEACH us THE useful lessons we need to learn in order to make better judgements that will ultimately enable us achieve success.

Lots of people actually use quotes like this on a daily basis. What puzzles me however is that in spite of the fact that they KNOW these quotes…

(a) Many people refuse to view failure as offering any positive benefits.

Evidence of this shows in how they look down on those they observe to be failing.

And also in how they AVOID it or HIDE all evidence of it when it happens to them.

(b) Fewer people these days are willing to put in the needed time and effort to acquire relevant EXPERIENCE which is an essential requirement for becoming MORE capable of making good judgements.

So many people seem to be in a hurry – no time to apprentice. They want to jump in and get made INSTANTLY. If necessary, they’ll cut corners.

But long term authentic success does not come that way.

Like the radio presenter pointed out, a lot of successful people we know actually started out by recording a lot of failures, till they learnt enough to succeed.

It’s so easy to quote these famous quotes. But DOING what the quotes say is a totally different proposition.

Fearlessly applying the wisdom from success quotes CAN help us achieve seeming miracles in our lives over time.

And by the way, it is very often those people who have done it the right way (i.e. those who have achieved authentic success by following the rules mentioned above), that are able to DRAW from their wealth of experience based knowledge and wisdom to utter quotable quotes about how to do what they have done.

They are always full of experience based wisdom, which they effortlessly volunteer for use by others.

By following the same proven process, EACH one of us can also over time develop to the point where the words we say get put on marble, for others to learn from.

We can start this process by forming the habit of APPLYING the wisdom of success quotes diligently in our daily lives.

Boost Your Supermarket Bookshop or Factory’s Profits With a Custom Excel-VB Software [Hint: View Screenshots of an Excel-VB driven Pure Water Business Manager™ app built for a Pure Water Factory in Ogudu, Lagos-Nigeria]

UPDATE – 29TH DECEMBER 2020: Watch video demonstration of NEW version with Auto Cashbook, KPI Charts etc.

Watch video demonstration of 2020 ExcelVB Pure Water Biz Manager Software version with Auto Cashbook, KPI Charts

The Typical Scenario

Some bookshop/supermarket owners (especially in my part of the world – Nigeria/Benin/Africa) focus – almost exclusively – on capturing sales and recording expenses using cash registers/POS tools (sometimes in conjunction with a PC based financial reporting software).

[NB: POS = Point Of Sale].

Customers come in and make purchases daily. At the day’s end, records reconciliation is then done. Usually, income is compared with items “sold” and resulting physical stock balance of products checked to agree with “book values”.

Sometimes a few things don’t agree with their expectations.

Genuine efforts are made to resolve the differences, but without success. Somehow, the decision is taken to let it go or write it off and “start over”. Sometimes, the problem resolves itself at a later date, with someone saying. “Hey! I found the item we were looking for the other day!”

The Problem

We all know that any business, desirous of growth and profitability NEEDS to be in firm control of records of sales income made, buying patterns, expenses incurred etc, so as understand her customers interests/preferences and better serve them by supplying relevant products/services.

Even though doing so may not harm their business, continuing that way is bound to prevent them from discovering better ways to make more profits at less cost.

This is because there’s a LOT more that owners can do with data obtained from daily transactions, which when done right, would significantly boost sales and increase profit margins.

The Viable Alternative

A simple yet extremely functional Custom Automated Spreadsheet application could be developed using Excel-VBA. The application will run in Excel, so you need not incur additional cost via purchase of new software.

Below: Screenshot of the splash screen of a Pure Water Busienss Maneger app I built for an Ogudu-Lagos based factory, as it loads in MS Excel 2003. My apps are typially built to be backward and forward compatible with different Excel versions

Anyone (attendant, accountant, or manager, etc) can be taught to post routine sales/expense records into specially designed spreadsheet table – immediately sales occur – or at specific intervals through each day.

In cases where POS machines are used, the records may be posted into the app later in the day or at the weekend. Or if the POS device used has cross-compatibility, the Excel-VB app could be setup to auto-import sales records from it, to auto-generate needed analytical reports.

Once the app can access the raw sales data, the manager can then use the drop down menu provided to view the summaries of products purchased/income made.

The few (if any) variances picked out would be more easily resolved, since s/he would not need to try remembering every single detail of jobs done.

The owner would be able sit back at the end of each day and review template summaries of items purchased (even to the extent of showing “which” customer bought “what”, if you desire to offer personalised services to your regular customers).

Comparison of one period with the other could be done using charts. Areas with greatest contribution to income could be easily identified and effort put into consolidating them to ensure consistency.

Final Words

A cash register/POS device DOES NOT and CANNOT offer the range of functionalities you will get from using a low (or zero cost) custom automated spreadsheet application.

You need to be able to study the trends in products purchases by your customers so you can make better decisions about what products to buy/stock next time e.g. you can then use what you learn to have your application auto alert you to predetermined product to buy/stock next time.

Use Excel-VB to Create Limitless Possibilities BEYOND What Off-The-Shelf Software Make Possible

Microsoft Excel is a powerful tool for recording, re-organising, analysing and presenting information.

By Excel VB, I refer to Excel VBA – where VBA means Visual Basic for Applications(VBA). VBA refers to the highly extensive and flexible macro programming language developed by Microsoft for use in their MS office applications – Word, Power Point, etc.

VBA is therefore different from the Standalone Visual Basic program used (by conventional programmers) for developing “standalone” or “executable” (.exe) software applications – though it borrows many of the latter’s features.

Think of Excel VBA as being the standalone Visual Basic software built into Excel for the benefit of Excel users/developers who are not traditional-minded programmers, but who are keen to exert more control over the application to enhance user productivity.

So, Excel VB offers any interested persons the necessary tools to make the application deliver more functionality. The final product is still an Excel document, but with extra functionalities added using VBA..

Read this article: Use Custom Automation Of Your Spreadsheet Reports To Drive Down Costs And Increase Your Profits.

The truth is that using MS Excel can ENHANCE the performance of your existing data handling/analysis and report generation software. This is why most off-the-shelf data analysis apps — especially for financial reporting – have EXPORT TO MS EXCEL features, to enable their users take advantage of Excel’s more flexible data handling capabilities to make better sense of their data.

Why Excel-VB?

Below I discuss 2 key reasons why I settled on using MS Excel-Visual Basic as my development platform for solving clients’ data handling, analysis and report generating solutions.

1. I always answer this question by asking the following question: What would be the point of “Killing A Fly With A Hammer”?

Let me elaborate. If a method is available that allows us to achieve the same desired result(s) at LOWER cost, with LESS effort and in LESS time, why should we fail to adopt it?

Certain IT persons insist that developing executable applications using the standalone Visual Basic programming language is “better” as it does not limit the user to a particular user application software environment. I concede that this might be a valid point under certain conditions.

However, I point out that there are many users who have very specialised, peculiar needs that do not necessarily require complex solutions.

A lot of people today simply want to get their data recording, (re)organisation, and analysis for decision making done quicker and with less effort.

They also want to spend as little money as possible to do this. In other words, they want a cost-effective solution that gives them independence from the solution provider in the long term – without requiring them to undertake laborious skills acquisition immediately.

This category of everyday users of technology described above are the ones I believe need Excel VB solutions of the type I describe/provide. I anticipate that some of these users will over time develop an interest in acquiring advanced skills needed to develop their own solutions – which is why I also offer coaching services.

2. Another question I ask, in answering the “Why Excel VB?” question is : “Why re-invent the wheel?”

My experiences (and those of others who favour the use of Excel VB like I do), confirm that to organise, and analyse data for (financial/management) report generation and decision making, you will save hundreds of hours using already in-built, pre-programmed Excel functions compared to a situation where you used Visual Basic proper.

All the functions needed to achieve the above purposes already exist in Excel, so that you don’t have to write them all from scratch as would be the case if you were to use Visual Basic.

Even though I had always felt this way, my encounter with a similar justification stated by a Microsoft Certified Professional, Pierre Leclerc on his website, gave me greater insight and clarity, that made me decide to stick with Excel VB even though I had attended a full training course in Visual Basic in 2002.

NB: LeClerc’s website has morphed in name, shape and form/content over the years since I first found him back in 2004, to what now exists at http://www.excel-vba.com.

Important Note: The fact that one uses Excel VB or VBA does not mean one will not have need to use VB or other languages.

Over the years, the need for faster, more sophisticated, robust, and secure Excel-based software has led Professional Excel Developers to – whenever they consider it necessary – actively utilise ANY other applications and programming languages (such as C/C++, VB6 or VB.Net) to deliver better performing applications (learn more below).

ExcelVB Is Used To Develop Commercial Quality Excel Software

Today, there is a huge army of Professional Excel Developers who develop Excel-based software solutions for a living – worldwide. Their software can be found in use alongside those developed using more traditional programming languages like C++, and VB6, in some of the largest corporations in the world – including Microsoft itself..

Professional Excel developers typically would use Excel VB in conjunction with other programming languages(e.g. C/C++, VB6 or VB.Net etc) and applications(e.g. databases like MS Access, Oracle, SAP etc) to develop flexible, fast/easy to use, high performing, robust and maintenable Excel Solutions.

The implication of the foregoing is that ExcelVB occupies it’s rightful place as the true development platform that it is. Many times, it is even able to deliver a significant performance edge over other applications due to its powerful calculation engine that the developer is able to leverage – thereby saving time while delivering more functionality to users.

Read this article: Use Custom Automation Of Your Spreadsheet Reports To Drive Down Costs And Increase Your Profits.

Summary: Excel-VB Creates Limitless Possibilities BEYOND What Off-The-Shelf Apps Make Possible

For the purposes of creating custom financial and management solutions that solve your identified problems, and give you control/ownership, without burning a hole in your pocket, Excel VB offers an amazing variety of possibilities, in the hands of an adequately skilled user.

In addition, an Excel VB – better still, a Professional Excel – Developer (who in many cases will tend to be a user turned developer, and is therefore likely to easily see things from your perspective) – unlike a programmer – is more likely to be positively disposed to working with you to ensure the application meets your practical needs.

S/he will readily understand that the final application is meant to help solve a real problem(s), and will therefore build it to match those expectations.

It’s not enough to have a professional with the technical skills to solve your problem, s/he also needs to have the right attitude and background/experience – else the relationship will not work. This is where an Excel VB resource is more likely to add value to you.

I believe the foregoing are compelling justifications for choosing Excel Visual Basic over Visual Basic.
