PII 103: One Travel Accessory You Should NOT Travel Without [Read THIS to Get IT FREE]

Travel accessories are a key requirement for problem free trips. If you leave home without some essential ones, your trip may end up being more of a nightmare – especially if you’re unable to find a good replacement.

A good example is your phone charger.

But…an even better example is your Power Bank – especially for people in my part of the world!

dc-trek-bag2

Since you’ll often be more on the road, than not, chances are good that you may not have ready access to electricity needed to powering your mobile devices – which, in today’s world are essential tools for optimal productivity in virtually every area of life.

The above is why having a ready and reliable means of charging your devices as you journey to your destination(s) is something you need to give careful consideration to.

In the course of my travels as a location independent multipreneur, I’ve learnt how important a good charging source can be to staying connected.

Even when one is not traveling, the ability to keep your mobile device ON is one that most people go out of their way to ensure they develop – for obvious reasons!

So, you see many carrying chargers and power banks of all kinds around with them.

This is an especially common sight in a place like Nigeria, where epileptic or even no power supply tends to be more of the norm than the exception. So, people are often on the lookout for every opportunity they can get to charge their devices.

Not doing so would make them stand the risk of losing valuable opportunities in their personal and work lives.

Take my case for example.

I once needed to transfer funds from an account to another that was linked to the debit card I wished to use at the ATM to cash money.

It was around 1p.m and I was at the ATM premises of the bank I used. Unfortunately, for me, the battery on my Smartphone (which has been flashing almost empty) finally shut down just as I tried to compose the SMS code to make the transfer!

When this happened, I almost panicked, since getting the funds was necessary for me to be able to continue towards my destination, where I was to keep an appointment to train a user who’d traveled down from outside the state, after purchasing my Feed Formulation Software and Handbook.

I owned a normal power bank that is charged using electric power supply (be it public or generator), but it was already drained…AND since there was no available place I could plug it into, like the phone, there was no way I could use it.

Out of desperation, I spoke to the security guard about finding a place I could connect my phone charger to boost the battery a bit.

But he told me there was no place I could do that where he was.

I looked around in frustration, and tried to think – hard. My mental attitude of never giving up, and always trying to think of viable alternative ways to achieve my intended purpose kicked in.

All of a sudden, I remembered that I had in my bag another power bank that was solar powered!

Quickly reaching into my bag, I brought it out, and soon located a convenient spot to place it for maximum sunlight exposure. Thankfully, the sun was really out on that day.

At this point, I knew everything was likely to soon be okay.

TIP: This comforting feeling came from my recollection of a day when I was traveling back to Lagos from Cotonou, while expecting an important call.

My phone battery was almost out of power, so I had places the Solar Power Bank on the dashboard (front passenger side) of the taxi I was in.

Then I’d connected my phone USB cable to the power bank, and watched it get charged at the same time as the power bank was storing sunlight as energy.

This made it possible for me to keep the phone on, and NOT have to wait till the power bank was charged up to some lower limit.

As a result, even though my phone battery had almost shut down when we took off for Lagos, I was able to take a call I was expecting, without worrying that it would shut down.

On that day at the bank, it took the Smartphone battery about 20 minutes to come alive enough to get a signal and allow me send the SMS to effect the funds transfer.

Over the years I’ve noticed that it pays to keep a simple and small “battery economizing” phone (like the nifty double SIM Nokia shown in the photos below) as a backup for when one is on the road.

dc-pbank-phone2

This is mainly for times when one’s bigger and more battery hungry Smartphone runs out of juice.

When you’re traveling, functionality and expedience will sometimes take precedence over the need to use the pretty features available with advanced devices!

This is why I’ve used my small Nokia phone in the photos to show the Solar Power Bank in use.

Do NOT however take it to mean it cannot charge bigger devices. It CAN.

For instance, I’ve used it to power my Blackberry, a relative’s Galaxy Tablet, and even another power bank with absolutely no problems whatsoever.

Yes. This solar power bank is THAT powerful (and as a result it’s NOT cheap!

My point, is however that using it with a smaller device when you’re on the road, can ensure you can stay connected LONGER, and that if your battery shuts down, you can get back up and running FASTER.

When you get back to “civilization” (i.e., places where you are sure of access to enough electricity for your charging needs), you can then switch your SIM card back to your Smartphone or other more advance mobile device.

That’s what I do anyway, and I’ve found it keeps me optimally productive.

Interestingly, small phones like the one in the photo are getting better at providing Internet enabled access.

dc-pbank-phone

For instance, mine lets me check my emails and Facebook quite easily – it’s just a smaller and simpler interface, but it works!

Another thing I absolutely LOVE about this solar power bank is the powerful fluorescent it has on the other side to the solar panel.

dc-pbank-phone3

Even after it no longer has enough juice to charge my phone, it’s given me massive return for my investment in it by providing excellent lighting at night or in dark places I’ve had to be.

The best quality of this device is however its durability/longevity.

Since I bought the first one I ever used in 2015, the one in the photo is the 3rd I’m buying.

But guess what? I’ve NEVER had to throw any away due to a fault or damage.

The first one got left behind in a Lagos Tricycle by my kids when we went on an outing. It still worked perfectly despite being badly scarred on the outside.

It had taken countless falls – without getting damaged – for over a year when that happened.

Sadly, the shop that sold that first one to me had run out of stock by the time I went back to them.

It took me time to find a reliable source to buy a replacement from (there are fake versions or copies in the market, so one needs to be careful) – and I only found the right place about 6 months ago.

Last week, I gave THAT second one to my daughter as a gift (so she and her siblings could use to charge their phones and also for lighting at night) and I bought the new one shown in the photos here.

I took that decision because I want to offer useful resources like this solar power bank to travel minded enthusiasts I intend to attract to DiscoverCotonou.com – the new Travel Website I’m launching.

Master Salesmen Use Smart Ideas to Sell. Ordinary Salesmen Don’t! [TIP: Be a Master Salesman – Experience Based Ideas from a Master Salesman]!

“All master salesmen know that ideas can be sold where merchandise cannot. Ordinary salesmen do not know this – that is why they are ‘ordinary’.” – Napoleon Hill

Way back in 2002, when I read the above words in Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich, I resolved to do ALL in my power to become a “Master Salesman”.

Today, at the risk of sounding immodest, it is on record that I have repeatedly and routinely risen/bounced back from numerous failures, to achieve greater successes, selling all manner of mainly “intangibles” [ e.g. my growing range of Digital Cash Flow Generating Assets (DCFGA)™, club memberships, affiliate partnerships etc] to mostly total strangers, from different countries who never even meet me in person!

Over the past 14 years, I’ve honed my skills of persuasion, an uncanny knack for “smelling” sales opportunities, combined with my infectious enthusiasm driven by an undying passion for what I do, to win buyers over from within and outside Africa.

Click to view large version of this flyer, in which a client and 2 proven experts comments about me are reproduced

Several clients and some relatives/friends have told me I have the ability to convince to do almost anything I want: One of them (after taking up yet another email offer from me) wrote that he sometimes felt I used MAGIC on him!

Another once told me she feared I would one day get into trouble with the way I seemed able to get people to part with money in exchange for mostly non-physical stuff – which she personally did not consider as valuable as what I’d told her they paid.

But THAT is what makes the difference i.e that last statement captures the core essence of what it means to be an AUTHENTIC Master Salesman…

You see, a Master Salesman knows and understands that his/her IDEAL target audience can simply NOT include everybody – least of all, especially, his/her relatives – with few exceptions.

Instead, s/he will have a finely developed ability to quickly and accurately identify people, prospects, potential buyers, who fit a clearly defined target audience profile s/he has conceived for selling EACH and every product/service IDEA s/he offers.

It is that crystal clear vision of WHO s/he needs to attract, that will guide the efforts s/he then proceeds to make to SELL.

So, in the case of my protesting and concerned relatives or friends, most never fit what I considered the profile of my IDEAL target audience for the stuff I did. As a result, their opinions never really matter to me.

I did not snub them however. Instead, I often patiently heard them out, and gently tried to point out the above mentioned considerations. But most times they did not listen, so I resorted to politely telling them we could agree to disagree. And when that did not help, I simply tuned them out if they persisted in talking about it.

Now here’s the message to take away from this article:

Many people will often have an opinion about what you do, or are trying to do.

Human beings are very funny, however, because too often I’ve heard persons who lacked ANY real world relevant knowledge and/or experience of a particular subject/issue or vocation/business, voice extremely passionate views to convince someone actually DOING it, that s/he was on the wrong path!

And they actually expected him/her to take them seriously.

Quite often this happens when they are being approached by the other person for help e.g. the new struggling entrepreneur with an unproven idea, who needs funding to implement his/her plans.

During this phase when the latter needs their money, for instance, to do make his/her idea work, they assume the fact that s/he has come to them means they are SMARTER than s/he is. And they often try to even tell him what to do and how to do it.

But no expert worth his/her salt allows others DICTATE to him/her in his/her area of expertise: THAT is a recipe for “selling” suicide!

Once they start telling you what to do, they’ll stop thinking you have anything they need!

You cannot take orders from those you offer your solution(s) to, with regard to HOW to do WHAT you offer to do for them.

What makes you the expert if you accept to take orders like an employee?

If they knew the SOLUTION to their problem, they would NOT need you!

Yes, they can – and should – have an input, but YOU must be in control, GUIDING them to use the solution YOU have developed.

Otherwise why did they hire you? {I say all this based on the argument that even when you’ve sold once to a client, you can – and should – still aim to up sell to them]..

How you handle yourself during this post-first-sale period will determine if you’ll earn repeat sales you want and need from your clients.

No matter how big, successful or bossy a client is, YOU must assert yourself and act like a dignified professional in dealing with him/her at all times.

Failing to act like the EXPERT AUTHORITY you are expected to be, is unlikely inspire MORE confidence in the client, to make him/her buy more or again from you!

To sell more, repeatedly, you need to assert yourself. Focus on telling…better still SHOWING…what your products/services can do for the client. S/he will listen and RESPECT you, when you do that. More often than not, THAT will result in a SALE!

There is a difference between trying to be humble and accommodating, and simply lacking experience based competence and confidence.

When you have competence and confidence, you KNOW your stuff, and asking for help will NOT make you feel ANY different about your abilities!

This is what a Master Salesman has, and s/he knows it is the key to his/her success!

Those s/he interacts with, those who encounter him/her OR any sales and marketing messages s/he creates and propagates FEEL it – and it WINS THEM OVER!

The reverse situation is what makes some salesmen ordinary. They LACK the above described knowledge and insight based competence and confidence.

…and just like it happens with Master Salesmen, those they (i.e. ordinary salesmen) interact with, those who encounter them OR any sales and marketing messages they create and propagate, FEEL it = and most times, it REPELS THEM!

The Master Salesman knows the above truths. The “ordinary” one does NOT: Do NOT be an “ordinary” salesman!

Final Words: If you want to sell successfully, for the long term, it goes without saying that you NEED to aim to become a Master Salesman.

This article has supplied useful experience based tips and suggestions you can use to get started. To learn more click here to contact me.

For those of you wondering about how effective the Web Marketing System (WMS) I claim to have created, can be, I invite you to watch as I GROW this new “brand” at low to zero cost using the custom WMS I develop and implement for it.

Like I always say to those I coach in Web Marketing – the best way to prove that what you offer works is to SHOW, and not just stop at TELLING those you want to convince.
The best part is this: The Internet is the ultimate leveler, and will NOT accept bribes, egunje or any other form of gratification. It is NOT partial, and will ONLY return results consistent with the efforts YOU make!
That means, when using the web for your marketing, even though some danger of sponsored attacks and other Negative SEO issues may potentially affect what you do, the truth is that if you do it right, you CAN – and WILL – overcome any such problems to succeed in getting powerful marketing reach and impact online that yields TANGIBLE and SUSTAINABLE income, for you, over time!
That’s what I intend to with this new brand I’ve launched, which will sell information. as well as products and services to a carefully defined niche market.
Stay tuned for more in the near future!

PII 102: You Need Big Ideas – NOT a Big Brain!

Analysis of physicist Albert Einstein’s brain revealed that his was slightly smaller than the average human brain. Quote this bit of trivia the next time some macho guy brags about the male brain being bigger than the female one. Look where Einstein’s “small” brain got him!” – National Geographic

This quote is self-explanatory, but in this piece, I “extend” its message to include a tendency in most people across societies the world over, to use physical attributes to draw conclusions about what a person can or cannot do.

This habit stems from a belief many of us grow up to accept from what we see and hear around us, about our capabilities and those of others.

For instance, the bigger girl is expected to run faster than the smaller statured one. The bigger girl is expected to be able to jump higher on the basketball court than a smaller sized team mate.

Then there are the silly gender based generalizations.

Men are expected to be braver than women. Males are expected to deal with worry and stress better than females. They are expected to perform better in sports, even business than women.

So, the person with what is considered a “weaker” attitude by society’s majority will often find him/herself not being given a fair and impartial opportunity or consideration to pursue success.

This happens all the time, in various areas of endeavour, all over the world – but in some societies, systems have been put in place to give more balanced access to opportunities to members.

But the truth remains that those biases persist, and people will continue to make unfounded assumptions about other people’s potential for a long time to come.

They WILL do the same to you, and to others you know or care about – including your kids.

This is why you MUST as a matter of urgent necessity, prepare yourself to deal with such potentially limiting generalizations, whenever they may be directed towards you.

I tell my two (11 and 8 year) old daughters this all the time i.e. that they must never let anyone tell them there is something they cannot do.

This is why I started them early in the business of personal development and achievement by way of income-earning vocational skills acquisition (Read: PII 007: Parenting Is NOT A Democracy [Hint: The Need to Assert Yourself to Get Results That Matter – Lesson from True Story of a Girl Who Made Pizza Without An Oven])

The article linked below explains how I got them to attend a 2 week intensive training course organized by the Lagos State Ministry of Youth Development.

Read: Empower Your Daughter to be Her Own Boss With Minimal Resources Via Vocation She Can Build on to Excel [Case Study: Cosmetic Makeup and Gele Tying]

It is noteworthy to mention here that the organizers initially expressed doubts that my girls, being so young, would be able to follow the lessons, talk less of being able to actually DO what the instructors would teach.

But on the final (graduation) day, the 8 year old was the centre of attention, with guests coming to record videos of her making up her “client”.

When she was called out to receiving her certificate, the special guest from Alausa, who was doing the presentation looked surprised when he saw her walking up to him.

The presenter, quickly assured him she was the one the certificate was meant for, noting that “she was the youngest participant”. (All the others were females in their mid twenties to over 50 years old)

I told my girls during those 2 weeks that they could do what was being taught as well as any of the other adults, as .long as they BELIEVED they could.

And I made sure to personally take them down and stay with them all through each day’s training session for the duration of the course.

A week later, I’d arranged for them to resume weekly training lessons in hair styling with a lady we’d met at the graduation ceremony.

They began about 7 months ago, but today are developing what is increasingly closer to “unconscious competence” in plaiting various styles (Didi, Ghana Weaving, Senegalese Twist, Patewo and Base, Shut up etc).

The key word n the above last sentence is UNCONSCIOUS COMPETENCE!

When one has repeatedly carried out an activity to the point that s/he can do it PROFICIENTLY without needing to focus one’s attention exclusively on it, then one can be said to have achieved UNCONSCIOUS COMPETENCE at it.

People who excel at what they do, in ways that are superior to the average person’s ability to deliver, are often those who possess UNCONSCIOUS COMPETENCE.

What I have done for YEARS is to actively challenge my kids to hone their gifts, talents and skills to the point of UNCONSCIOUS COMPETENCE when they use them.

I do this because I have reaped the benefit that comes from possessing that ability. It has enabled me deliver superior performances in every area of endeavour I have ventured over the last 3 decades of my life – right from my days in school, through my time in paid employment and especially over the last decade of my life as an entrepreneur.

My passion for what I do, which is based on areas I’m gifted /talented had made it easy for me to devote thousands of hours for years, without losing enthusiasm.

This is why I succeed in spite of adversity – continually baffling nay-saying others, to bounce back from setback after setback, outlasting delay after delay after delay, overcoming disappointment after disappointment, to advance in pursuit of the BIG DREAMS I have.

And that brings me to the core message I want to pass across this week.

You see, my drive to develop UNCONSCIOUS COMPETENCE actually comes from my relentless dedication to achieving BIG IDEAS and DREAMS I come up with.

In other words, thinking big is the FUEL that motivates me to develop UNCONSCIOUS COMPETENCE, which in turn equips me to develop and implement my BIG ideas, to achieve my BIG dreams.

I’m coaching my kids to develop the same mental attitude I have of THINKING BIG like I do, and never accepting there is anything they are too small or young to do.

This is why I am constantly coming up with ideas to brainstorm with them, about how they can use the different skills they’ve picked up, to go to the next level – which is to make money.

It’s not been easy for the girls in particular. They’ve often hesitated to take this next step – and I know it’s mainly because they do not see their peers doing any such thing.

But their male (teenage) siblings are already setting the pace in this regard, and I know it’s only a matter of time before they also catch the bug.

One thing is certain – by the time my girls arrive their teens, it’s unlikely that they will be letting anyone tell them being female and having smaller brains means they cannot achieve as much as their male counterparts.

As parents we should aim to help kids understand that they have the ability to achieve anything they set their minds to.

And as individuals, we owe ourselves a duty to BELIEVE that about ourselves too!

PII 101: To Attract Larger Numbers of Serious Buyers, Use Smart Public Speaking [Invite Me to Deliver My FREE 1 Hour Talk Titled “Spend Less Money & Time to Make Customers Find & Contact You, Even While You Sleep!”]

Last November,I began making targeted follow up visits to CEOs and key decision makers of certain organized bodies of people, who I identified to fit the defined target audience profile for my Custom Web Marketing Systems (WMS) Development Support Service.
During the meeting, I make them an offer of my FREE 1 Hour Talk Titled “Spend Less Money & Time to Make Customers Find & Contact You, Even While You Sleep!“(click to read)

I Will Deliver The Talk for FREE – ANYWHERE You Want It

Like I told a decision maker who asked me how much it would cost to have me deliver the talk to their group’s CEO members, in different locations across the country (this was our second meeting), it’s 100% FREE.
All you have to do is meet my terms – which include covering ANY expenses (e.g transport, feeding, accommodation etc) from start till end.

The purpose of this initiative is to recruit new members into my Web Marketing for CEOs club.

It involves giving a FREE one-hour to these groups of people, informing and educating them about how they they can use Web Marketing at zero cost,to generate quality sales leads on a repeatable basis.
By employing a no-strings-attached approach to delivering what is obviously useful ready-to-use knowledge to them, the audience feels less like they are being sold to, and will therefore tend to be more positively disposed to connecting further with me.

I’ve done the above described countless times, with considerable success, over the past 10 years.

During that period,I’ve refined my implementation of this strategy, to improve the impact I achieve, with great results to show – anytime I have used it.
A good example was when I gave my 1 hour talk to a group of CEOs at Sherryville Arcade,Ojodu-Berger in Nigeria’s Lagos.
An entrepreneurial couple in the audience invited me to their office in the arcade,to discuss their needs, and 2 days later hired me (for N300k) to develop a WMS for their tiles importation and marketing business.
The use of a Public Speaking for Business Marketing System (PSBM) is the 9th key component (click here to see the mind map) I recommend for adoption in the implementation of the WMS I develop for clients.
I coach clients on what to do, and how to do it,to make it work.

Below is a verbatim text transcript version- and a screenshot image – of the Cover Letter I send, along with my Speaker One Sheet, introducing my FREE 1 Hour Talk Offer titled “Spend Less Money & Time to Make Customers Find & Contact You, Even While You Sleep!

=====STARTS====
The Chairman
…….. Shopping Arcade
……………………….Dear Sir,
FREE 1 Hour Talk Offer on “Business Marketing” for CEOs
Attached is a Speaker ONE Sheet document that announces a 1 hour talk I offer to give – at zero cost – to interested CEOs, about how they can use what I call a customizable Web Marketing System (WMS) to boost their business marketing reach and impact.
Title: Spend Less Money & Time to Make Customers Find & Contact You, Even While You Sleep!
Duration: 1 hour (Question/Answer session follows)
Date/Time: To Be Agreed | Venue: Your premises [See details of the attached Speaker ONE sheet document]
Potential Benefits:
Attendees can expect to learn, during my talk, true stories based examples/case studies of how I use this technique to achieve low to zero cost name/brand recognition and potential client/buyer recruitment.
I will also explain how they can apply the ideas I share to improve their own businesses in a way that help them reduce marketing/sales expenses, and/or boost sales.
In addition to the increased goodwill that you will earn from members, who will appreciate your gesture of arranging this event to inform and educate them, the improved ability of attendees to generate sales leads is likely to make them better able – and willing – to RENEW their “tenancy” (or “membership”) as and when due.
The above are the key reasons I’m optimistic that a good number of them will urge you to invite me to give this talk.
I therefore look forward to discussing and agreeing final details for holding this event at your invitation.
With kindest regards,
Tayo K. Solagbade*

PII 100: What Are You Willing to Do to Succeed? [Hint: I Slept on the Streets of Benin Republic’s Cotonou & Porto Novo!]

How badly you want to succeed in any area of endeavour you embark upon, will often determine how well you eventually succeed, in the long run.

And since succeeding has been defined a “never ending journey of striving perpetually for excellence“, THAT means you need to (like I explained in the 10th Way described in my Self-Development BibleBE HUNGRY & STAY HUNGRY…for success, if you want to excel at what you do!
So what are YOU willing to do to achieve the success you say you desire?

Hopefully you are not one of those increasingly larger numbers of people who engage in the self-delusion of empty affirmations NOT backed by diligent and intelligent ACTION TAKING.

I refer especially to those who hide behind pretentious religious dispositions they display, to try winging their way to success.

Like I’ve said in past articles, and will continue to say, there are no reliable, worthwhile shortcuts to lasting, authentic success.
Majority of the exceptional achievers many lazy minded people regard with a mixture of admiration and envy today, often have a string of past failures that they had to relentlessly ignore, and overcome with hard work and persistence, in spite of adversity, to arrive at the success they enjoy today.

You most likely have read a variant of the above before. You most probably know the true stories of success achieved despite suffering and setbacks, about some famous persons.

Most people I meet know all of these things. But it always amazes me to find that despite reading and hearing about how those they idolize in success had to sweat, struggle and strain to reach the top, MOST of these same people express a shameless (and nauseating)  tendency to want the same REWARDS dropped in their laps, with little or no exertion required from them to get it!

But then again, that attitude, often displayed by many of the new generation of youths and young adults I meet, out here, is a direct fallout of the instant gratification culture promoted by PC and Internet technology driven conveniences we  enjoy in today’s modern world.

At the click of a mouse, one is able today to get things she would not even imagine possible about 2 to 3 decades ago.

It is for this reason, that today’s parents have their work cut out for them. Especially those who have to care for teenagers or preteens.

The teenage years are the most crucial determinant, of how kids will arrive adulthood.

If not well managed during this period, especially in terms of helping them to mould their CHARACTER, in addition to knowledge and skills they develop, teenagers can grow into adults who need outpatient care from their parents, because they lack the competence to function as independent adults when they leave home.

Strength of Character, is the ultimate key to lasting success in life.

Without it, most people would not be able to deal with delays, disappointments, setbacks, failures and anything else that goes wrong in their lives.

Such an inability to deal with adversity will make them more prone to experience what can be called PERMANENT DEFEAT – to paraphrase Napoleon Hill, from Think & Grow Rich, in which he described FAILURE as TEMPORARY DEFEAT.

But to help your child acquire an ability of this kind, you must have it, and your child must SEE you display/use it, if your message to him/her is to fully hit home with him/her.

So, do YOU have strength of character?

Can you deal with things going wrong, as if a storm is brewing in your life, for long periods, without giving up?

Have you had any experiences that have tested your faith in yourself? To the point that you (like people in my part of the world so often do) began to “believe” some enemy in your village or home town was using “juju” or “black magic” to make you fail or struggle perpetually?

If YES, then take it as a sign that YOU NEED to work on developing GREATER strength of character than you currently have. THAT is the only sure, time tested ANTIDOTE to permanent defeat and frustration. Once you have strength of character, NOTHING – and I do mean NOTHING can stop you.

But guess what the best part is?

When you have it, especially in the generous amounts that I have found it possible to develop it, you become VERY attractive to others who seek INCREASE in their lives.

You become a source of inspiration for them – they will see you and what you continue to do DESPITE the hardships you go through, and they will draw massive inspiration to pursue their own valued goals.

Take it from me. Like I always say: I practice what I preach. In other words, I LIVE this stuff! Below, I narrate a true story to illustrate

Back in April 2013, during my first month in Cotonou, after I relocated from Nigeria’s Lagos, I found myself in the very uncomfortable situation, by the end of my first week of stay (in the small and cheap Hotel Petit Pere, located in the center of the city), of insufficient cash to continue paying for a room.

This happened due to my arriving with limited funds and not being conversant with the exchange rate between the Naira and the CFA.

Typical of my entrepreneurial self, viewing the world through rose coloured glasses of optimism, I’d assumed i would easily find rented accommodation within the first week.

What I did not know was the real estate agents I kept going to would be so naughty as to repeatedly ask me to pay 2,500 FCFA to go see one supposedly “good” apartment after another.

They kept coming to pick me up from the hotel to go on visits to different properties to let, until I noticed a trend in which they took me to houses that were not even fixed up with electricity or water access!

When I queried them, they readily assured me those would be sorted soon as I paid up.

But a closer look at the properties, and a chance conversation with residents in the neighbourhood, soon revealed some of the houses were not even up for rent.

The agents had seen my desperation to escape from paying the hotel fees, and exploited it.

For those looking to rent accommodation, in Cotonou or elsewhere, this above mentioned potential risk is noteworthy.

You’re advised to find a trustworthy local to move around with you, especially as you explore offers on ground – and in particular when you discuss/negotiate terms with agents and property owners.

It goes without saying that you need to ensure you read, understand and agree with anything you are asked to sign e.g tenancy agreement (which in a place like Cotonou, is often written in French, for instance).

A nifty little book on the above theme (see cover below), written and published for sale to a global audience by Dr. Nana Arnold Kouayep, offers useful time tested experience based wisdom from his deep repertoire as a bilingual Jurist.

============================

Too low on funds to stay in the hotel, I moved out and began visiting different properties with “A Louer” (To Let) signs in desperation, but unable to find anyone willing to accept my crazy proposal that I be allowed to move in and pay by Monday, when funds I expected would arrive

Soon it was nightfall, and I still had not found a solution to the problem of a place to rest/sleep. Carrying my travel bag and backpack, I kept walking from street to street, through areas around the Etoile Rouge roundabout.
On a particular street, I noticed a church building for what seemed to be an Anglican style church. The lights were on. So I went in, and seeing an elderly man around 65 years old, explained that I needed a place to stay for the night, having run out of cash to continue in the hotel.

Speaking kindly and acting concerned, he asked me a few questions, and I replied.

Then he asked what country I was from, noting that my spoken French lacked the common Beninese “flavour”. “Gabon?” he suggested. I told him, NO – and added “Nigeria”.

That would be my first experience of what I found to be a common negative attitude of some locals towards people from my country – “Nigeria“. His countenance changed almost imperceptibly,

But I did not miss it.

His next words were along the lines of: “Sorry, but I can’t help you. I think you should try finding your way, possibly to places where other Nigerians live, so they can take you in.”

I asked him where that would be, but he replied that he had no idea. However, I got the distinct impression that he simply could not WAIT for me to leave LOL!

That discouraging scenario would replay itsself at about 3 other places, until I got to a private residence around midnight.

There I saw a plump looking young man sitting on one of the fancy Cotonou motor bikes while chatting with a friend at the gate. I greeted them and explained that I needed help.

The same question and answer session as occurred in the previous places took place.

I was already thinking nothing good would come of it yet again, when he suddenly asked me to show him my passport, so he could be sure I’d come in with correct papers.

When I did that, and he’d satisfied himself they were in order, he said he knew a place I could stay.

About 30 minutes later, he’d dropped me off at an area around the Stade De L’amitie (the national stadium), where he introduced me to some private security guards, and explained my situation to them

Long story short, they agreed to let me sleep on the tiled outside floor of the shops they were guarding from that night right through the weekend, into Monday morning, when funds arrived at the bank, for me, from Nigeria.

I exchanged numbers with my new friend and he left for home waving backwards to me. “An angel sent by God” I said to myself LOL!

During that 4 day period over the weekend, the guards would let me use their shower to bathe and clean up, including wash my clothes (before daylight).

Then once it was dawn, I would go walking around the stadium to watch people do different sports till nightfall. But lacking money, I could buy no food to eat.

Yep, I mean it. From that Friday night till Monday a.m of April 2013, I only drank water – as I had NO CASH to buy ANY food to eat!

I knew no one in the country at the time, and I had made no friends I could reach out to. It was far from being a funny experience.

Yet each day, I would write and publish a new article on my blog – click here to check my April 2013 archives: I did not miss a single publishing day. That was how driven I was. The hunger pangs I felt did not stop me from staying motivated to do what I LOVED!

NB: Those close to me – my kids and relatives – have heard this story from me before now. But THIS is the first time I’m sharing it publicly. And it’s NOT even half told yet LOL!

I’ll be telling the rest of it during my talks as I travel (click here to request an audio version of the full story).

For now, I’ll end by noting that on Sunday night, the hunger I felt was so great that around 10p.m, I approached a lady selling pineapples in front of the stadium for a pineapple.

She told me “C’est cent francs” i.e. it’s 100 French CFA (about N33 Naira at the time).

I replied that I knew, but that I had no money. She looked me over in disgust and told me to leave. I quietly did so while consoling myself that I’d at least tried and thay the rejection I earned was the worst that could have happened.

Retiring to a corner bench outside a closed shop, I lay down with my head on my backpack, while my travel bag was beside me. (This experience really opened my eyes to what it meant to be homeless, I tell you!)

As I looked up into the sky, praying that time would run fast into morning so I could go to the bank to receive the UBA Africash transfer I was expecting, I heard the old lady call out to me: “Monsieur!”

Sitting up, I saw her motion for me to come over. Getting to her table, she handed me a pineapple and told her son to peel it for me.

I thanked her profusely, and watched, with my stomach growling, as the little boy peeled the fruit and sliced it up into a nylon bag that he handed me,

Thanking them both, I retuned to my corner and proceeded to eat the fruit, prolonging each bite as long as I could, to savour the flavour.
Never had pineapple tasted so great in my mouth before!

That night I slept much better than I had on the previous nights – for obvious reasons. Food is good my dear reader! No matter how  tough you are, lack of food for prolonged periods WILL get you down sooner or later.

The next morning, by around 9a.m, I had collected cash from the UBA branch in front of the stadium

Life was good again…or so I thought – until few weeks later, I once again ran out of funds and had to sleep on the streets of Porto Novo, when I made my very first visit to the famous Songhai Integrated Farming Centre.

Details of that and other trials I passed through in my first few weeks in Benin Republic will be in the audio podcast I will soon publish for members of DiscoverCotonou.com to freely access.

I’ll end this piece by saying that my willingness to endure any form of hardship to achieve any goals I set for  myself is why I AM the unstoppable force of nature that others find me to be.

The articles linked below offer true stories of my achievements by the end of that first year (2013) in Benin, despite my rocky start – such as:

On another occasion, I had to write a blog post due for publishing on my blog, while inside the chauffeur driven jeep of a Cotonou based Nigerian diplomat client, at 11.30p.m. We were stuck in a traffic jam on the way back to Seme border, after a visit to his farm in South West Nigeria. Read more

2. getting paid 2,500 Euros by a European Union funded NGO based on Holland, to write a 4,000 word case study paper about the use of my Excel-VB Ration Formulator by farmers in/out of Africa

By the time the year 2013 ended, I wrote a post (so far viewed over 25,000 times) featuring highlights of various other aspects of progress I’d made since my initial sputtering start…

FINAL WORDS: If you want to achieve your own goals, no matter what, you MUST (MUST, MUST!!!) be willing to face and overcome ANY adversity that comes your way

If you need help learning how to do that, signup for my Master of Adversity (MA) coaching program

PII 099: You Need Reasoning Skills, NOT Memorization for Success! [www.discovercotonou.com – COMING SOON!]

All human beings are born with some kind of unique genius. We just need to narrow down to what it is for each person. Some of us discover it by ourselves. Others get it pointed out to them by those they interact with.
Sadly few people who pass through formal schooling are able to preserve their capacity for INDEPENDENT thinking and creative reasoning (which is a function of the above mentioned genius they arrive the world with)

Sadly few people who pass through formal schooling are able to preserve their capacity for INDEPENDENT thinking and creative reasoning (which is a function of the above mentioned genius they arrive the world with).
By the time they emerge from that supposedly “educational” experience, they display an unhealthy preference for wanting to follow the crowd, to be like others, to NOT stand out, to belong to – and NOT stray away from – the pack or tribe.
And that’s what makes the few who refuse to let formal schooling “damage” them in that manner, seem so exceptional!

It’s what made Albert Einstein make such a formidable impact on the world with his ideas.

Little wonder that he consistently showed a contempt for formal education – having passed through it himself, and famously denouncing his teachers along the way.
Below is one of many quotes credited to him, in which he criticized the faulty system used in formal schools, whereby memorization of facts and figures was rewarded over and above reasoning skills:

“Never memorize something that you can look up.”

And here is an excerpt from an excellent BBC report which notes the fact that Eisnten excelled by NOT adopting what formal education demanded i.e Rote Learning.

“Intriguingly, those who have more spindle events tend to have greater ‘fluid intelligence’ – the ability to solve new problems, use logic in new situations, and identify patterns – the kind Einstein had in spades. “They don’t seem related to other types of intelligence, such as the ability to memorise facts and figures, so it’s really specific to these reasoning skills,” says Fogel. This ties in nicely with Einstein’s disdain for formal education and advice to “never memorise anything which you can look up”.
Source: http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20170612-what-you-can-learn-from-einsteins-quirky-habits

I happen to be one of those few who managed to emerge from the formal schooling process without losing my Creative Genius.

And this despite the fact that I managed to do quite well in the academic system. In fact, I did so well that I got awards right till I left the university.
Not only was I best graduating student, but I also scored the highest ever C.G.P.A (5.9)  in the department I finished from. And on top of that, I got awards for sporting excellence as well.

On getting to the real world however, I discovered that being able to use the knowledge I had or read up, to “solve new problems, use logic in new situations, and identify patterns ” – was what the WORLD really valued in people.

So while in paid employment, I dug deep into that natural genius of mine, for doing THAT and it turned me into a high performing manager that set all kinds of workplace achievement records in 7-short years.

I did things that got me noticed early in my career and earned me rapid career advancement opportunities well ahead of those who were my supposed seniors.
Since starting my own business, my knack for using the knowledge I have or that I read up, to “solve new problems, use logic in new situations, and identify patterns” has helped me build a profitable business model, that enables me get paid by clients locally and internationally, without face to face meetings.
One recurring theme has always been that I tend to THINK of and SEE things that are likely to be needed well ahead of others.

When I take action based on those insights I have, most people initially just scoff at my efforts and even call me foolish or silly. But eventually, because I never let go, and diligently persist in trying to work those ideas, I eventually prove them valid and those who doubted become converts.
This has happened again and again. I’m used to it. Any person who wants to make the most of his/her genius MUST get used to it, and never let it stop him/her from taking action to do what s/he is convinced about.

Today, I’m acting on the above mentioned instinct, again, by launching a new website – www.discovercotonou.com – to meet a series of needs I’ve identified from 4 solid years of careful research based on enquiries from visitors to www.tayosolagbade.com.

dc-edit-ok

Once again I’m seeing what others are NOT seeing. But soon, they will. And I’ll be waiting to reap the usual rewards.

The same thing is currently happening for me in the area of Best Practice Parenting and the message I’m preaching that parents avoid making the mistake of NOT exposing their kids of income earning vocational skills based education EARLY in life – ideally alongside formal schooling. More on THAT in a separate article to come soon.If you need help making it happen, click here to send me a message

For NOW, here’s my admonition to you.

You too can have the same experience of NOT letting formal schooling’s “IMPACT” limit your ability to manifest your genius.
If you need help making this happen, click here to send me a message
