Is Your In-House Expert’s Ego Costing Your Company Money? – Part 2 of 2

In this second – and concluding part – of this article (read Part 1 of 2 here) , I offer practical suggestions (based on the true success story of a large multinational company) about how businesses can help their in-house experts act, more often, in the best interest of the company.

The In-House Expert’s Ideal Role Is To Add Tangible Value With His/Her Unique Expertise

A manufacturing multinational company once had a challenge finding a commercial off-the-shelf software application to comprehensively handle routine data handling and report generation needs of its factory production processes.

Despite repeated efforts to use some of the more popular commercial software, they found a lot of the peculiarities in their production process could not be efficiently catered for via customisation of the purchased software. There was – among others – a requirement for whatever software they used to be able to generate reports conforming to an already existing "house format".

Following some discussions, it was agreed that an in-house solution be developed.

The alternative adopted was a custom automated Lotus 1-2-3 based application built from scratch by a young expatriate middle level manager over a period of some months. Basically, he went around with a laptop speaking with those involved in data generation, analysis and reporting from the Corporate Headquarters to the factories, Purchasing departments, Production Planning, Engineering Utilities etc.

Using the information he gathered, in conjunction with various recording/reporting formats he saw being used in the different units(and his knowledge as an insider with experience in most of the key operations), he built an application that allowed entry of raw factory performance data and which automatically computed the company’s Standard Key Performance Indicators.

The application also automatically produced a one-page report that identified TEN(10) specific areas in which the company had OVER spent and UNDER spend respectively. This was displayed in an automatically generated comparison table, expressing the amounts SAVED or LOST in usage units (e.g. Kgs per litre of product) and monetary unit (e.g. Dollars per litre of product).

On the same page was also an auto-generated Variable Cost Analysis chart and four process charts showing the progressive trend in key waste control parameters over a 12 month period.

The best part was that this nifty program was built using an already familiar spreadsheet application, in a way that a reasonably skilled user could easily make needed changes as the need arose over time. Following reviews, the application was immediately put to use in preparing reports sent monthly from the factories to Headquarters, and also for the Monthly Review meetings held with Directors.

The In-House Expert’s Ideal Mental Attitude: Objective & Results-Focussed

I have narrated the above true story, with names etc removed "to protect the innocent" :-)

It illustrates the fact that senior decision makers in the technical function (a group of in-house experts) of the company did some good QUALITY thinking. This was with the obvious objective outlook being to SOLVE the data handling and reporting problem being experienced.

They liased with the IT department (ANOTHER group of in-house experts) to consider and test possible solutions. Over time they settled for a customised, simple, yet highly effective/flexible solution which they then found someone to develop and implement.

These senior technical managers – as well as the IT – managers functioned PROPERLY and successfully as the In-House Experts they were EXPECTED to be.

They had the final say in terms of recommending what could be done to the company.

They could have INSISTED that the company improvise with the less flexible commercial off-the-shelf applications, and probably the top management etc would have gone along.

But a lot of things would have suffered, and the main problem of poor data handling/standardisation and reporting would have persisted.

Instead, they wisely remained objective and open minded enough to see that the unique problem in the technical function required a unique solution.

They must have left their minds "open" long enough for someone (possibly the young expatriate Training Coordinator himself) to "sell" them the idea of using an automated spreadsheet application to solve the problem.

And that’s how in-house experts can justify their presence in, and earnings from the company: 

By adding REAL value to the company in such a way that it becomes better equipped to achieve its business goals more successfully. If they act this way often, the company they represent is unlikely to miss valuable OPPORTUNITIES to get – and STAY – ahead of the competition.

This is because it would be fully equipped to seize those opportunities as/when they appear using the INSIGHT of its results-oriented in-house experts.

Note: The young expatriate developer of the above mentioned program, was not an IT person.

He was a manager in the technical function, who happened to have a flair for numbers and had also developed his spreadsheet programming skills quite extensively.

Your Company Needs "Non-Partisan" In-House Experts

To help you realise how NOT addressing the issues I have raised here can make your company MISS great opportunities to advance in quantum leaps, I reproduce below just ONE of many available quotes(you probably know some yourself!) credited to "in-house expert" representatives of companies.

These experts confidently gave the following WRITTEN assessment (to top management) of a new idea/concept/innovation that went on to CHANGE the world!

“This ‘telephone’ has too many shortcomings to be seriously considered as a means of communication. The device is inherently of no value to us”. – Western Union Internal Memo, 1876

Can you imagine just how STUPID anyone who took the advice of the guys who wrote the above mentioned memo MUST have felt AFTER seeing demand for the telephone in business and society skyrocket?!

That’s the price one can end up paying for FAILING to remember that EXPERTS will always be human. Which makes it necessary to constantly check and ensure their human weaknesses do not prevent them from delivering EXPERT quality results as often as possible – in the BEST interests of the organisation!

Summary – Set Up Systems To Help Your In-House Experts KEEP Doing Their Jobs Properly

So what’s going to happen when next some unknown, inconsequential looking individual walks into your company lobby…and says s/he has a product or service or IDEA s/he believes your company will find useful?

What will you want your gatekeepers from reception, to your personal assistant(s) and of course the "in-house" experts to DO before they send him/her away?

In my opinion, it would not hurt to arrange for certain members of your team to give formal appointments to – and meet for a limited time. With individuals who come in sounding coherent, purposeful and convincing enough to the gatekeepers.

The fact that your company is BIG does not mean a (seemingly) "small" person cannot have a BIG idea that can make your company bigger!

And THAT is the classic mistake many people make – especially when they feel they are "successful" or more successful than the person who approaches them!

You might also want to set up a system for documentation, collation and careful REVIEW of EVERY idea, suggestion or proposal that is made on paper or verbally, by employees or outsiders, formally or informally, for their potential uses and applications.

Sometimes the solution you seek to a challenge being faced by your company can reveal itself to you, when you OPEN your mind.

Consider the IDEA(S) or SUGGESTION(S) a junior employee – or unknown outsider service provider who offers to give a talk for instance – says s/he has.

It will only be a matter of time before doing so yields benefits that result in significant improvements in your company’s productivity, profitability etc.

Isn’t it amazing how those narrow minded individuals who wrote that memo, rubbished an innovation that was destined to change the world? If anyone had taken them seriously where would we all be today…without the telephone?

The foregoing is why I argue that companies need to set up systems to help their in-house experts act in the best interests of the organisation.

Who Is An "In-House Expert"?

Here’s my "definition": Any employee – whether temporary, contract or permanent – whose opinion – based on his/her area of recognised expertise, will be sought and used to decide what the company should do, with respect to a particular line of action being considered.

They (i.e. in-house experts) are often given the responsibility of providing related support to other employees using their knowledge and expertise, to evaluate possible strategies, technologies or solutions that the company could adopt to IMPROVE her ability to achieve valued corporate goals.

Common examples include IT managers and their lieutenants.

Sometimes companies outsource their needs in technical fields such as IT, keeping a skeletal structure in-house. Other times they engage consultants on a contract basis. And of course some companies feel more comfortable having a full fledged IT department in some cases with emphasis on development of in-house software solutions.

Other types of in-house experts are the Project Managers, HR managers, PR managers, Marketing Managers, Business Development Managers, People /Organisational Development Managers, Engineering Managers etc.

These individuals would usually be depended upon by various categories of decision makers (including their fellow in-house experts) in the company to EVALUATE – for instance – any new idea or initiative/concept being considered for adoption.

And more often than not, it is whatever they say that gets taken as the "final word", so to say.

But that’s not bad in itself – so long as the in-house expert maintains a dispassionate and professional (UN-BIASED) disposition in giving his/her advice or recommendations.

The Problem: In-House Experts’ Can Sometimes Be Afflicted With "Experts’ Blindness"!

Do you have in-house experts whose word you take as gospel truth?

If you know them well, and are sure of their competence and objectivity, that would be a safe thing to do.

But in life, nothing stays exactly the same. Much as you may trust and like your "expert", s/he may not always be able to deliver to the same high standards.

Why?

Because s/he – like the rest of us – is only human!

And as a human being, when you get used to being "the expert", in a situation where people often readily accept what you say/think, it can get quite intoxicating.

That can make you get just a little "too carried away" sometimes.

Only Few People Can Resist Feeling This Way Every Now and Then

Your in-house expert is just as prone as everyone else. Chances are if/when s/he does slip up, it will be inadvertent rather than deliberate. Whatever may be the cause, the potential damage to you/your organisation in the event that this does happen (and it CAN!) is the most crucial thing to consider.

What if the advice/tip given you by your "in-house expert" turns out to be based on statistics s/he checked two weeks earlier, AND which s/he assumed would stay the same for at least 30 days, as had been his/her experience over that past five years?

But what if THIS time, due to a slight change in market regulations late last week (that your expert did not bother to monitor since s/he "knew" it was the same old "stuff"), your plans based on the expert’s advice had fallen through?

Just think for a moment what it could mean, if this were to happen to you.

The point I’m making is ANYONE of us can use past experience to take intelligent decisions. BUT the key to our being consistently successful will be CONTINUED vigilance to changes that MAY occur and which could have implications for the decisions we take.

Without staying alert to unexpected changes or new developments (some previously unknown to even the most experienced among us) that could occur, we stand little chance of achieving success with any degree of consistency.

And that’s why we cannot afford to turn a blind eye to our environment!

Anybody/anything can help us in this process. The problem with some in-house experts is that they let their egos get in the way – AND block their view.

Whenever this happens, the organisations that depend on them lose out as a result.

Why Do In-House Experts Sometimes Behave This Way?

As I said earlier, the truth is they are only human. We all have our little attacks of insecurity every now and then.

And that makes can make a person inadvertently hold opinions/give recommendations based LESS on objectivity, and more on how s/he "perceives" that an idea/concept/initiative "THREATENS" his/her status as an in-house expert.

A person advocating a new idea/concept or initiative may find it useful to ensure the in-house expert believes s/he can end up looking BETTER by letting the idea reach decision makers, instead of opposing it.

But it may not be easy to do this – especially if one is an outsider, like a consultant or service provider offering his/her services in a unique area e.g. development of a software, website etc.

This is why I suggest that companies develop systems to help in-house experts do what is best for the company at all times.

I offer some ideas for consideration in the second – and concluding part – of this article, which will appear on this blog tomorrow.

It happened about 2 hours after I sent out issue 126 of my Weekly Public Speaking Ideas newsletter on Monday. The title was “True Story – Public Speaking on the Road(Why You Must Always Be Prepared!)“. I got a call from a gentleman based in Portharcourt, Nigeria, who excitedly told me he’d been (as he put it) “enjoying” my emails for over a year.

He then said “after reading your newsletter today, I decided I had to speak with you and find out how I can get some of your farm business products.

Monday (that’s his first name) said he found my approach to farm business communication quite appropriate for Nigeria’s mostly smallholder farming population.

Then he asked “So how do we get started? I’m thinking of starting with Poultry.”

I promised to get back to him, as I had to get down to the bank to get some cash.

At the bank, I discovered a long queue, and slow connection problem. So I sent him an SMS asking for his email address, so I could send him links to some web pages from my Blackberry in the meantime.

He promptly responded, and I sent the email. By this time, it was well past 6p.m, so I decdied to call him the next morning.

At 11a.m the next day, we spoke for about 10 minutes during which time I asked him key questions to ascertain what his needs were. Using what I learnt, I promised to send him an email with recommendations on purchases he could make from me, and other resources he could get elsewhere.

The next day (Tuesday i.e. yesterday p.m) I sent him the promised email, with a 3 page PDF attached.

The name is self-explanatory. This website is a gold mine of information. Any Poultry Farm owner will find it a valuable resource. Be sure to register to join their mailing list so you can receive new content updates. But also bookmark the website itself, so you can pay repeat visits to explore the massive library of content it offers.

The only concern I have is that a lot of the information offered is not necessarily directly applicable to the situations prevailing in the tropical climate/region, in which African farm owners have to operate.

That concern was what led the authors of the book mentioned in 1. above, to author it. Managing livestock under different climatic conditions often requires application of different systems/practices. The realities faced by farm owners can often be very unique – with respect to feeding etc.

Final Words: Serving Farm Business Owners is Something I absolutely LOVE doing!

Achieve Entrepreneurial Success – ANYWHERE – Without Becoming Crooked

I once told barefaced lies, for months, to loved ones in order to prevent them stopping me from using money I’d set aside for an agreed purpose, for a new idea I had for my business. Yep. I did it.

Irresponsible? Probably.

I’m certainly not proud of it!

Today, I have no need to do such a “naughty” thing. But back then I did it to keep my entrepreneurial dream alive!

All I could see were the potential rewards benefiting everyone (like they do now), and I used that to justify my actions (silently to myself…!).

For over 6 months, I invented excuses and made up stories (i.e. lies!) of all kinds to explain why I’d yet to make the payment as discussed. Each time they asked, I found a way to wriggle out.

My wife (God she’s soooo perceptive!) was never convinced. She knew something was not right, but could not be sure what it was. And she told me that much. I told her to avoid letting her imagination run wild… :-)))

All that time I was waiting for the returns to arrive. They eventually came…but not at once. I just barely managed to put it all back! Then I promised myself I’d never do anything of the kind again.

Looking back today, if I’m going to be honest with myself, I KNOW I’ll do it again if I feel it’s necessary.

Maybe this risk taking attitude comes with being an entrepreneur, or maybe it’s just me, I do not know.

One thing I’m however certain about from my past experiences is that when you choose this path, if your ultimate intention is sincere, and you diligently persist, certain forces eventually come to your aid.

Don’t ask me how I know. I just do….based on what has happened to me.  

I once read a quote on Robert Kiyosaki’s Facebook page that referred to 4 different kinds of people a good leader needs to be able to identify, if s/he is to succeed.

In this article, I focus on "No. 2: A good person temporarily doing bad things. "

An entrepreneur, at different stages of his/her career may sometimes find him/herself fitting the above description (i.e. a good guy being doing bad things temporarily, possible due to pressing circumstances. And s/he may hate being in that situation, yet have no choice…till things improve.)

Not a pretty picture.

But I can tell you it happens. I’ve been there! (See my “Personal Example” above)

Napoleon Hill Discovered Some Successful People Employed "Temporary Dishonesty"…!

In Napoleon Hill’s “Think and Grow Rich” he noted the fact that some of the successful people he studied admitted initially employing temporary dishonesty to reach their goals.

But it was temporary. Lasting only long enough to get them to a point at which they could carry on with honesty integrity.

I guess it’s part of being human. Sometimes life throws challenges at us that necessitate resorting to temporary use of undignified outlets, just to keep going.

In one account of his life story, I read that Walt Disney admitted taking pictures of phoney bullet damaged helmets, during the war and selling them, earlier in life.

The Problem Arises When Doing Bad Things Is Allowed to Become a Habit…or Way of Life

“To be well adjusted to a sick society is no sign of good health.” – Anonymous

Many Nigerians start-ups either abandon their ideas halfway through, or go wayward in their business practice. They mostly do this out of frustration, desperation, and in order to survive.

So many bad practices in society make it hard for honest persons to grow their businesses easily and with integrity in Nigeria.

This appears to lend credence to the belief in our society, that it is not possible to achieve business success in Nigeria without being “crooked”.

My knowledge, acquired through hands-on practical experience gained by doing it on the streets, convinces me that it is very possible to run a profitable, honest and upright business anywhere – even in a society where bad practices occur in excess.

They key is to find ways to do what you do that remove the need for you to join in doing those bad things.

Each time I said this to other business owners in Nigeria, many basically told me it was impossible.

Developing Multiple Income Streams Will Save YOU!

I told them a person with multiple income streams will not view every potential client project as a do or die opportunity!

If you have passive income periodically entering your bank account for information products you sell as a financial consultant, you can say NO to any company employee who insists you give him/her a bribe before a project is awarded to you.

You will have the power to walk away – being confident that your dependants will not suffer because you choose to be upright!

But It’s Not That You Will Be Doing Multiple Different Things at Once

No. There will be no need for that: You’ll only develop multiple viable ways of making money from doing what you do.

This is what many business owners do not know is possible. And those who know it seldom know HOW to do it!

I refer here to Farm business owners, lawyers, accountants/financial consultants and many other professionals and experts.

Most of them tend to focus on the conventional ways of making money in their fields.

What a very wasteful – and WRONG – way of using their highly valuable knowledge and skills!

The truth is with a little creativity, you can take the same thing you do/know and make much more money using totally new/different strategies.

No. 126: True Story – Public Speaking On The Road (Why You Must Always Be Prepared!)

This is a true story that I hope will impress upon you, the need to be PREPARED, at all times!

I returned to Cotonou 2 evenings ago (i.e. Saturday p.m), after a 24hr visit to Lagos, where I conducted practical training(on use of my livestock feed formulation software/handbook) for a client who paid N47k.

He paid on Wednesday, and travelled from Umuahia, in Eastern Nigeria, to join me on Friday, at the venue in Oko Oba, Lagos state.

No. 126: True StoryPublic Speaking On The Road (Why You Must Always Be Prepared!)

This is a true story that I hope will impress upon you, the need to be PREPARED, at all times!

I returned to Cotonou 2 evenings ago (i.e. Saturday p.m), after a 24hr visit to Lagos, where I conducted practical training(on use of my livestock feed formulation software/handbook) for a client who paid N47k.

He paid on Wednesday, and travelled from Umuahia, in Eastern Nigeria, to join me on Friday, at the venue in Oko Oba, Lagos state.

I Had Little Time to Prepare – or Even Rest!

NB: If you wonder why  I choose to come and go to/from Nigeria, from my base in Cotonou, this article offers detailed explanations.

My father will be 80 years old on February 4th (in a week or so from today). The family has been working hard to prepare for a big celebration in his honour. As you can imagine, there’s so much that needs to be done. Yet, I’ve been unable to make myself as physically available as I’d have loved to.

I keep returning here, in Cotonou, where it’s more convenient and less expensive (no generator noise or fueling expenses!) to prepare my Ration Formulator software for submission to the “Top 20 Innovations for Smallholder Farmers” competition that’s followed the “Call for papers” I wrote a Case Study for.

Deadline is 15th feb. I did nothing on it while in Nigeria. Not much time now left given Dad’s approaching birthday party. This is why I’m so pressed to use the little time I have left.

Luckily for me, ‘Tomi, my “super” sister, and my other siblings have been on top of things from day one.

I Had to Prepare All Promised Items, Even As I Continued Work on Outstanding Tasks…

Towards meeting my trainee, I prepared the invoice, printed the physical handbook, and had it spiral bound. Then I packed up my things and took off for Lagos at 3p.m on Thursday.

I got into Lagos at 4.30p.m, but did not get home till 10p.m that night…courtesy of Lagos traffic.

By the time I ate my meal and went to sleep, it was past midnight. And I still recall waking up at abut 3.00a.m to respond to an email from ‘Tomi, which required an urgent answer, about reviewing photos for the birthday programme, to be sent to the printer.

By 8.00a.m I was on my way to the venue!

Here’s Why It’s Good to Know Your Subject Inside Out….

Burt Dubin recommends making yourself a master of your subject.

That’s advice I strongly recommend you take to heart!

Get yourself so familiar with it that if woken up from sleep, you’d have no problems delivering a convincing presentation on it.

That’s what I’ve consistently done on the subject of “Livestock Feed Formulation using Pearson Square Computation”.

And it’s always paid off for me.

That day, I was just hours away from running a 4 hour on-on-one coaching session, and I had gotten little sleep, PLUS had had no time to do a revision of what I was to speak on.

Yet, I knew I would be okay.

It was a subject I loved. IT IS a subject I LOVE with a passion!

That’s why I’ve always constantly researched it. Plus, my regular conversations with past buyers/users give me useful insights most trainees always appreciate.

It Turned Out the Farm Biz CEO Was Unfamiliar with Getting Around Lagos…!

Just as I was thinking I had my plate full, a phone call from the trainee revealed he did not know how to get to the venue!

Suddenly, here was another unexpected factor to worry about.

I did some thinking and recommended he consult taxi drivers about the best way to take buses/motor bikes to reach the venue (a feed milling company at Oko Oba), from his relative’s place at Egbeda.

We agreed to meet there by 10a.m as planned.

By  9.30a.m, as I approached the place, I called to ask where he was. He said “You’ll have to give me an hour please. I’m at Eric Moore in Surulere.

I was stunned. That was a totally different location: It was nowhere near where I was headed…

Indeed, it was good one hour away from our planned meeting point, if traffic was good!

What are you doing over there?” I asked.

I had to quickly get something from a friend’s. But I’m now leaving. Please tell me, how do I take transportation from here?” he replied.

Once again, I told him. Then I followed up with an SMS stating the names of landmarks and bus stops je was to mention to the bus consductor, to reach my end.

Past Training Sessions Lasted 4 to 5 Hours. This Client Came Unexpectedly With “Special Needs”

We took off about 2 hours late. But that was just the beginning of many unplanned “occurrences”…!

After the practical training at the feed mill, I needed to coach him on using the software. But he told me he had an important appointment to keep in Ikeja. Our late start meant he was going to be late. I proposed we go together, and from there retire to a business centre to finish the training.

We did that.

About an hour later we were seated in a business centre near the Ikeja computer village. I began demonstrating the use of the software.

To his credit, he periodically stopped me to ask very intelligent questions, that made me supply answers that gave him deeper understanding.

I appreciated that, and it made the hiccups we’d had to endure worthwhile for me.

It’s always fulfilling when a learner displays interest in understanding/using what s/he is being taught!

And this gentleman was driven. For instance, about 20 minutes into the session, he said:

Ah Tayo, I think I’d better buy a small laptop, otherwise I’ll be unable to practise and remember all these things you’re teaching me!

He explained that he was relocating from Abuja to Umuahia, where his new venture was based. Most of his stuff was still back in Abuja, and he it would take a while to bring them over.

So, getting a laptop to work with in the meantime made good sense.

I agreed. Again I was impressed with his obvious commitment to learning.

We Moved Into the PC Village, and Went Round the Vendors Till He Bought an Elite Book

Back at the business centre, I copied the Ration Formulator, its PDF user guide, the FREE PDF Pictorial Introduction to Feed Ingredients, and the Feed Formulation Handbook’s PDF into a folder on his laptop. Then I burned 2 CDs containing the same files, as well as 7 video demonstration files, and gave to him.

The above was however a bit of a slow process.

So, while we waited for the copying to end, I gave him additional tips on how to get familiar with computing ration formulas via Pearson Square. I also promised to create special annotated guides to further boost his comprehension.

But for starters, I made it clear he needed to study the handbook’s contents in depth.

When the files copying ended, it was about 7.30p.m.

He had to return to Umuahia, to beat Saturday’s sanitation exercise. So – after getting directions from some transporters – I took him to Bolade area of Oshodi where he boarded an Onitsha –Owerri bound luxury bus. Then I made my way back home…

I Had to Show Up, and Perform, As Represented!

Through all of this the Lagos traffic was at its worst on most routes, so you can imagine what moving around was like for us.

This farm biz CEO was however referred by Bello Hassan, a past buyer and long time subscriber to my website newsletter, who has still NEVER met with me in the flesh in the years since we made contact.

So I was determined to give him the best possible experience.

It’s interesting to note how surprised he was when I replied that I’d never met Bello in person.

He said “Really? You know I was not sure about paying that money to your accouint. After you sent me the account number, I asked Alhaji Bello if it was okay to go ahead and pay. He simply asked me ‘Don’t you want it?’ I told him I did. He then said ‘Then go and pay!’ ”.

Apparently, he was surprised that Bello was so sure about me, even though we had never met in the flesh.

The above explained why he’d delayed paying for 3 full days. This was despite calling me repeatedly to get my account number on Sunday 20th January (while I was having my wonderful multiple co-incidences filled “meeting” with a Beninese restaurant consultant I’d just met).

He would not not make payment until Wednesday 23rd. Apparently, he’d been worrying if it was safe to do so….Can’t say I blame him though ;-))

Luckily, he went back to Bello, who re-assured him.

And that’s not the first time Bello (like some other past buyers) has done that!

What can I say? Something about my conduct inspires confidence in some of my buyers, so that they willingly take risks most people would not.

That’s why I do my best to ensure they NEVER regret their actions!

I pointed out to CEO, that some of what I’d already done for him, had NOTHING to do with what I promised. Yet I’d gone out of my way to help him anyway.

He nodded in understanding.

Final Words: It Pays to Be Prepared…You Never Know What Conditions You’ll Have to Speak Under!

After I left him on the bus that night, I sent him an SMS reminding him to read the feed formulation handbook to thoroughly understand the theory of feed formulation. In a week or so, I’ll follow up with him to find out how he’s getting on.

And so “My Public Speaking on The Road” adventure ended well…but ONLY because I make a point of ”ALWAYS being prepared”.

You can also succeed more, even in the face of rapid and unexpected changes, if you do the same!

Good Writing Ability Can Lead You to Financial Success

People use writing to make money in so many unusual ways. Some write articles and reports for others, and get paid per word, page etc. Others write as a means of self-promotion, to attract buyers/clients. Then others write to produce books they publish and sell. All this happens across so many genres. With diligent effort, many are achieving financial success and freedom using their writing skillls. And you can do the same!

You Need to Find What Works for You

Almost exactly a year ago, at about this time, I’d just decided I needed to try my hand at using blogging, more directly, to achieve my online writing goals. I had already seen and enjoyed the multiple rewards of writing for self-promotion and sales income in various ways.

Apart from my physical books and e-books (on self-development, feed formulation etc) which had been selling via my online store, and through offline systems I set-up, I’d also had very many new clients find me online through my article marketing.

In other words, I had no doubt about the power of the written word, and how it could get people to do what I wanted, if I wrote it right.

But over time, the volume of my writing output had grown tremendously, and I had to continue doing it while attending to client needs and responding to prospect enquiries.

The Process Gradually Became Cumbersome and Time Consuming For Me.

I knew I needed an easier way to keep going, or something would give…most likely my work quality and/or ability to deliver satisfactory work to deadlines.

After studying the structure of blogs, I realized a lot of the work I was doing on my own via my static html based articles publishing would be automatically handled by a blog. Even better, search engines love to visit blogs. I’d learnt that from careful study of many blogs, and reading articles by successful business owners who used them.

So, I decided to launch this blog…the SD (Self-Development) Nuggets™ blog in June 2013.

Less than 7 months later I’d begun reaping amazing results from using it. And the exciting trend continues even today. More visits, more contact form enquiries and requests, more newsletter subscriptions. And even more emails and phone calls about what I do. Some just to thank me or to ask for help etc.

So Far, I Have Not Yet Had to Attend Writing School to Succeed With Writing the Way I Do It..

Don’t get me wrong. I recognise the importance of doing this right, and I do have my plans to get some formal coaching on writing – especially because I intend to focus more on writing short stories and novels in the near future.

My experiences convince me more people will benefit from the value I have to offer if I can connect with them using that approach, instead of formal writing which non-business persons may find stifling and uninteresting. In fact I submitted a 500 word entry to a 2013 writing competition on 31st December 2013, so this is no joke!

But back to my take on getting formal coaching in writing…

By Following Simple Tips from Experts, I’m Achieving Exceptional Success Using Writing!

I started my journey into writing without any formal preparation.

After reading books by real world business marketing experts online, I noticed a common theme by most of them.

They kept saying:

“Write the way you talk.”

Another thing they said often was:

“Write using words that a 6th grader can understand.”

In other words, avoid using unnecessarily complex words. Keep it simple.

One more thing they constantly emphasized was:

“Tell stories. Share your experiences. Use real life examples.”

According to them doing so will make your target audience want to read your writing.

Then they also made it clear that one needs to:

“Offer ideas that provide useful insights and solve real problems people face. when applied to the personal or work lives of your readers.”

I’ve Shared Many of My Own True Stories About Writing Success, On This Blog

A recent one has to do with the 4,000 word case study agribusiness paper accepted for publication by an international organisation that paid me to write it.

My wonderful experience has been so exciting, that I’ve been unable to keep it to myself.

That’s why I’ve written to share my knowledge and experience in articles.

And I’ve also been gently pushing my own kids to develop interest in writing the way I do.

I ask them to focus on earning decent passive income on a part time or full time basis… the way I do.

This way they see a tangible end that they can relate to, which assures them it’s not just another school exercise.

You see, I realise today that if I’d discovered paid writing while in school, I might have honed my writing skills earlier, and used it to earn additional income in my free time, during the years I was in paid employment.

I Don’t Want My Kids to Delay Getting Started Using Writing to Succeed Financially, Like I Did

I don’t want them to make the mistake I made.

That was why I made each one handle the bundle of 50 Euros totalling 2k euros, the day Professor Idowu (my co-author for the international agribusiness paper)  gave me the payment he’d received on my behalf via his Euro denominated domiciliary account.

I knew if they saw that I earned that much for writing a 4,000 word paper, it would make them take what I was saying about writing competently more seriously.

This Has Been an Ongoing Exercise with My Kids – Especially the 3 Oldest (all Boys)

I made the 14 year old attend a 6 month manual typewriting class in late 2012. When he finished it, I tasked him to write a short story that we could publish in his name on my blog. I got him to read Chinua Achebe’s “Things Fall Apart”, the popular “Oliver Twist” and other books based on stories.

Every now and then I’d ask him how far he’d gone. He’d often have nothing to show me. I’d deliberately make a fuss about how he was wasting all he learned in typing school, and how disappointed I was. Then I would make him go online with me to read Bamidele Onibalusi’s blog, saying to him: “This chap is just 19 years old. You can do what he’s doing if you try!”

If you know kids, especially teenagers, getting them to do stuff like this can be hard work.

But if you persist, they will eventually respond.

I knew I was getting through to my 14 year old son, when one day he told me he was almost done writing a story he had conceived!

When I eventually read his story, I liked it so much that I made slight corrections and published it on my blog late last year.

Incidentally, I’d always told him to think a lot, and to use what he saw/heard around him to come up with writing ideas. He apparently took that advice to heart.

I’ve since tasked him to teach his siblings how to type, using a typing tutor on my laptop

Last time we had a “meeting”, all 3 boys showed me short stories they’re working on, in different stages of completion on my laptop. This has encouraged me to consider getting them a used but rugged laptop that can take rough treatment. Before now I felt they would only play games and music on it!

But with what they’ve been doing, I already see useful progress.

What’s most exciting for me is that I know good writing skills will open doors of early financial success for them.

This is because it will empower them to develop independence in earning high level income regardless of their location at any point in time, like I do.

YOU (yes “YOU!”) can also develop good writing ability and use it to earn decent income on a part time or full time basis.

And you can start even if you lack money to attend formal writing classes. Then as you succeed, you can also coach your kids to do what you do.

At some point you can choose to invest some of the money you make, in taking your skills to the next level by taking formal writing lessons.

All the above will cost you is some sweat and time spent hammering away at your keyboard.

If you consider the lifetime of rewards that are bound to come from doing it, you’ll realize this is what some people call a no-brainer!

If You Truly Love Your Kids, You’ll Do This

When children are with their parents they go through a lot of experiences. Some are positive and others are not. In the course of those experiences, they learn different things – some good, some not so good, and then some, bad. You, as a parent can resolve to make those experiences beneficial to the kids, most – if not all – the time.

Sadly today, the experiences that kids go through are not in any way planned or structured. The result is that the learning, insight and “education” they acquire tend not to be planned or structured either.

In the villages, especially back in the old days, adults/parents were a lot more deliberate in the ways they chose to expose children to specific experiences.

There was often a specific/desired outcome in mind, most times when a young boy or girl or young man/woman was asked to do something. Books like Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart in which Okonkwo’s rise to adult (man) hood is described provide examples to support the foregoing assertion.

If you want your child to quickly find direction/purpose for him/herself in life, you need to help facilitate the process.

You can do this better than the teacher – because your child is more likely to trust you more. The teacher(s) can help consolidate on your efforts while the child is in school, but you would be the main “player”, helping steer the child towards eventual self-discovery.

That is the way it should be – you working with your child to chart his/her future, while the teacher (through close interaction with you) helps keep the child focused on the journey to self-discovery.

A child that benefits from this kind of “training”, will gradually evolve into an independent minded, self-motivated and focused adult.

She would be easier to teach because the natural interest in a future goal would have been stirred, so that the need to study/learn would be obvious to her.

The experiences that children go through in their developmental years often have a strong and lasting impact on them in their adult lives. Any parent who wants those experiences to be positive ones for his/her kids, will have to get personally involved in providing those experiences – and/or helping the children deal with the results of having them. It cannot be any other way.

Newcomers to a company typically have to undergo “induction”/training in different departments to facilitate their settling into their new jobs/roles in the company.

They are made to go through this, despite having been found to possess the needed qualifications and experience for their jobs. This is because the management recognizes that for them to function efficiently (to the benefit of the company), they will be better off being “helped” to achieve familiarity with existing procedures/systems faster.

Among other benefits, these newcomers will thus be expected to make fewer, avoidable errors in the early stages of performing their new duties.

This foregoing analogy describes what parents would be doing for their kids by “inducting” them early on into the ways of the world.

Parents should be able to bring their “expertise” in worldly affairs to bear on the “training” of their children.

Do you love your children? Do you want to give them the best possible preparation to succeed in their adult lives in society?

If YES, take the above ideas to heart, and apply them, from today, in relating with your kids.

You will be glad you did.

If Everybody Does It, Should You?

Quick answer: Not if it’s something that you’d be ashamed to admit doing to others not doing it. In this article, I discuss the tendency people in paid employment have of adopting a “herd mentality”, even where issues conflicting with their ethical and moral values are concerned. A good example which has bothered me since I was in paid employment myself is the matter of seeking some form of gratification from contractors or service providers engaged by one’s employers.

I spent only 7 years in paid employment. But during that short period, my exceptional workplace performances led top management to rapidly assign me multiple career advancement opportunities.

In 1998, about 4 years after I joined the company as one of 12 graduate trainees, I got assigned to a fairly sensitive position in an acting capacity.

It was the office of Training and Technical Development Manager (TTDM).

That job involved dealing directly with a lot of external training consultants, including planning training programmes they would conduct for the staff, and also agreeing payment they would get.

I’m proud to say that right up till the time I voluntarily quit that company to start my business, I NEVER once asked for or took gratification of ANY kind to do my job, from ANYONE.

My Naivety and Love of Work Saved Me…

In many ways, I’m glad I tended to be more of a workaholic than most. As a result, the idea of asking any of the consultants to build in a percentage for me, in the fees they charged, never crossed my mind.

I had more important things to do…like developing new solutions to problems they company faced in the departments I worked!

I’ve learnt a lot since becoming self employed and (initially) trying to offer training services to companies as an entrepreneur. For instance, some Training Managers often insist the trainer agree to give them a cut, BEFORE they include him/her on their training schedule.

If you say NO, your offers, no matter how great or potentially beneficial to the company’s personnel, would not be passed on to decision managers by the Training Manager. Most times it would be done in a way that you would not be able to prove anything.

It always surprised me whenever I came up against this problem as an entrepreneur offering consulting services to organisations with such issues. I often wondered why people in positions they were being well paid to man, would feel a need to take from what a consultant was getting.

“What did they need the extra money for?” I asked anyone who cared to listen.

Silly me…:-)

One day I met with a gentleman who also ran a training consultancy. By the time we got around to the subject of getting access to medium to large companies, I brought up the matter.

He gave me a look that said he pitied me for trying to fight a losing battle, and then said:

 “You see, they won’t tell you anything when you submit your company profile to them. They’ll wait till you come asking why they’ve not called you for a discussion. A few may venture to ask if you’re new in Nigeria, for instance. But most will just say you’re trying to prove you’re holier than others. MY friend, it’s a battle you cannot win. Most of them do it.

Then he showed me a number of invoices he’d prepared for corporate clients whose staff he’d trained. Pointing to the N15, 000 per person fee on one of them, he announced that the training manager was getting N3, 000 per trainee. In other words, he as the consultant would only get N12, 000.

I asked: “But why? What works does he do to justify getting part of your money?”

He replied: “There are companies where it does not happen. But they are not many. Most companies have people in them who believe in doing things like this. Even the guys in the accounts office who have to give the consultants, contractors and other suppliers/providers their cheques have a system for getting some gratification, in place.

Those who fail to play ball simply find their cheques never seem to get signed on time, or even get lost. By the time they “get the message” and “do the right thing”, they suddenly discover it’s the company staff in charge who calls them on phone to say “Oga, your cheque is ready O!”

This article is not a self-righteous rant.

I’m not trying to make myself look like a saint here. But the truth is that in ALL my time in paid employment, I never once did such a thing. Not only is it bad and wrong, it is also not worth the hassle…and the anxiety they must periodically feel about getting found out.

But most people tend to follow the crowd. Some do so out of fear of criticism. Others do so out of greed.

As a result today, many in paid employment dip their hands in all sorts of naughty stuff. And they develop large appetites from taking home more money than they earn.

Sadly, their spouses rarely ask how come they have so much extra money to spare when they do not run a side business.

Instead everyone simply falls in line and adopts the high consumption lifestyle.

If/when the person gets found out and kicked out of the company; they are often unable to readjust to the normal lifestyle they should have been living. This eventually may lead to a crisis in the home.

My question to YOU is this:

Does the fact that you discover all your friends, colleagues and co-workers are doing something that’s lucrative, but dishonest or even illegal mean you MUST do it too?

Should you let your friendship with others be such that they can lead you to do things that can damage your name and reputation – possibly permanently? If others travel and return with “manufactured” receipts to claim money for expense they made, should you join them in doing it when you also travel?

I have a confession to make here:

You see, I once made this mistake(of letting others force me to join them), and I lived in terror of being found out till I quit the company I worked with.

Believe me, it’s not worth the hassle doing something you don’t want to, just to avoid being called a wet blanket!

That’s why today, I FIRMLY refuse to do any such thing – including giving anyone any money or gift to award me a project – regardless of whose Ox is gored.

Many people told me I would suffer for taking such a stand while trying to succeed in business in Nigeria.

One person even said “Tayo, people who think like you and have such an attitude often get frustrated out of business in Nigeria.

That same person recently added me as a friend on Facebook…10 years after he made that statement to me.

We’d not been in touch all that time. One day, last month, he sent me an SMS asking to know how I was doing. I called him and told him a few of the advancements I’d been able to recently make.

Then I invited him to read up more on this blog.

Next thing I saw was an SMS to me exclaiming “Wow…Tayo the Multiplexer! Well done, I’m going to read the entire thing!!”

I will not pretend I know what “Multiplexer” means. I call myself a Multipreneur. Whatever the case, I believe that was meant to be a complement of sorts :-)

I’m sure he’s seen enough, now, to realize that the creator ALWAYS makes a way for people who refuse to play the “dirty” games others play.

So Here’s My Challenge to YOU: Don’t Let Peer Pressures Push You into a High Consumption Lifestyle

You do NOT need to do what others are doing, if it’s wrong, bad or illegal.

Anything you know you will not be proud to admit you’ve done should never interest you.

Not even if means you’ll be called names!

Take that stand and stick with it, then watch as your creator elevates you above all those short-sighted persons who chose to take an unhealthy shortcut to success!

 

Real-Life Proof That Co-incidences Rarely Happen! (True Story)

Here’s a story you may find entertaining. I share it because it provides an excellent multi dimensional example of how the creator can lead you to meet people who have answers to your needs, when you least expect it.

19th January 2014 Was A "Sunday" of Multiple Uncanny Coincidences!

If you’ve been reading this blog a while, you most likely know I intend to open a Home Based Farm Products Brew Pub here in Cotonou. The target I’ve set for myself is to find and rent a suitable place and get something started in it before the end of March 2014.

Not an easy task, as I’ve discovered. I only returned from the end of year holidays with my family on Saturday – with half of the month gone. And I have a backlog of tasks – including an international competition I have to enter my Excel-VB driven Ration Formulator for – to deal with.

That awareness was what drove me to go walking around the neighbourhood where I live, in Barrière, here in Cotonou, on Sunday morning. I was hoping to find and speak to any property owner with the kind of place I was looking for available to rent.

In case you’re wondering why I didn’t just check with Estate Agents, it’s because I’ve never had a good experience with them – in Lagos, or here in Cotonou. They just make me spend lots of money. Most times I end up having to find what I need by myself. That’s what happened with the room I live in now!

I Was Walking “Almost Aimlessly” Around, Looking Buildings Over, When I Saw a New Looking Bar

It was just like I’d imagined mine would be. The owner lived in the building behind, and setup the frontage to be the bar. The open space provided extra room for plastic chairs and tables to seat guests. Whoever this person was, I was sure he could help me – in more ways than one!

The time was about 10.30 a.m. It was rather early on a Sunday. Most people would not agree to me with a stranger at that time of day.

But I always listen to my intuition. And it rarely steers me wrong.

This time it told me to go in and ask for the owner. I walked in and asked the young attendant cleaning the floor if I could speak with the owner. He gave me a guarded look and asked me why. I promptly told him exactly what I had in mind.

Surprise, surprise! The young man nodded in understanding, and pointed me to an open door saying, “If you go in there, you’ll see him. Try and see if he’ll agree to speak with you.”

Thanking him, I walked to the door, and soon found myself staring at a bespectacled man in his late 50s or early 60s, with hair greying at the temples. He was slim, and from his seating position, obviously tall.

He asked what I wanted. Again, just like I’d done with his attendant, I went straight to the point.

With a puzzled expression on his face, he asked “Qui t’a envoyé ici?” (Who sent you here?).

He asked how come I knew to come to his place, and not elsewhere, to make my enquiry.

He said “Setting up restaurants is my specialty. How is it that you managed to find your way to me in this manner? It’s just too strange!”

He began asking more questions. I kept answering.

As we talked we discovered more coincidences in other areas of common interest, including using MS Excel to prepare records and reports for restaurants.

He kept saying it was strange that I just walked into his office saying I needed help finding a property to rent for use as a home based restaurant, when in fact THAT was a core aspect of his new consulting outfit.

I Told Him I’m Often Guided by the Creator, to Meet "Helpers" That Way

And that was the truth. I’ve had the experience countless times, so that I’m no longer surprised. I understand why it happens.

It’s how I got myself well known in the Nigerian embassy, for example, by top officers, even though I had no initial contacts in there when I arrived Benin Republic.

You see, back in April 2013, I met a total stranger, who gave me contact details of the top embassy officials (including the ambassador himself) – phone numbers and email addresses – before I ever met them. That enabled me access them, and not get blocked by secretaries, personal assistants etc.

A total stranger…in under one hour of meeting me, did that. Now, how uncanny is THAT kind of coincidence?

Still he said "Mais c’est bizarre." ("But it’s strange")

We went on to spend about 6 hours (11a.m till about 5p.m) discussing. He turned out to be widely traveled internationally as a Chartered Accountant/Auditor (in the Hospitality Industry), and retired about 6 months ago to open his home based restaurant.

By the time I told him the kinds of light/quick meals/snacks I plan to offer in my pub, he called up an Excel workbook and showed me his restaurant’s menu with much similar contents.

“Yet another coincidence. We have so much in common!” he exclaimed.

Soon he was showing me all the spreadsheets he uses to track sales/expenses, and over 4 wonderful business idea packages he did not realize he could sell as information products …until I told him.

By the time I showed him how his manual Excel records could be automated using Excel VB, he took me into the restaurant and bought drinks for us as we continued talking.

At a Point I Recalled I Needed a Tailor Urgently…

At a point I told him I needed to find a skilled tailor to sew an outfit I would be wearing for my Dad’s 80th birthday celebration coming up on 4th February.

Amazingly, another coincidence occurred…

He announced that just next door was his brother who ran a fashion design business. We simply walked over!

By the time the brother was taking my measurement in his studio, after we’d settled on nice embroidery to be done, I noticed a large photograph on his studio wall.

In it he (the brother) was receiving a plaque from, and shaking hands with a big and tall man that I thought I’d seen on TV and billboards a number of times since getting here.

But I felt it was unlikely to be the same person. Out of curiosity, I asked the brother who the man in the pix was. He looked at me then smiled knowingly, saying, don’t you know him? Take another look.

I said "Le Chef de l’etat?" i.e. "the head of state?"

He nodded to confirm it was President Yayi Boni!

Apart from that photo, this chap had other award plaques on his wall. As you can imagine, I began sweating when I thought of how much a person like this was likely to charge to sew an outfit like the one I’d chosen…lol

Luckily for me, he gave me a very pocket friendly bill (15k FCFA), explaining that he could not do otherwise, because I was his restaurant-owner brother’s friend.

Phew…what a relief that was…lol

PS: There Was One More “Coincidence…He Bears a Yoruba Surname!

Yep. Their ancestors are Yoruba from Nigeria, who emigrated and settled in Cotonou. His kids even attend Nigeria International School here. But neither the kids or their parents speak Yoruba. Small world indeed!

I mentioned that the school’s supervisor is Nigerian embassy’s Mr Kakshak (minister for political affairs and education). And that he knows me well because of my pineapple peel products. My new friend promptly called his daughter into the office and asked here who their supervisor was.

She mentioned the same name. So that gave me even more credibility as you can imagine!

But Here’s the Best Part of It All….

It looks like we may be doing some big things together.

If our discussions go according to plan, my new friend may engage my services to develop a web marketing system and/or an Excel-VB restaurant management software for his consulting practice.

On my part, I’m planning to engage his services to help me with setting up my Home Based Restaurant. I foresee us doing some barter exchange at some point to make some of this happen.

Amazing isn’t it, how it all seems to fit?

We’ll see how it goes…maybe he’ll be my first Beninese client!

But wow…that was one great Sunday…and we did not even go to church. He and I discovered we both do not do "religion". We share the same belief about having a direct and personal relationship with the creator!

Final Words

Hopefully, you’ve been entertained by my story.

You can have anything want by thinking about it with faith that you already have it, even before it arrives.

You only need to have absolute and unquestioning faith that help you need is on the way.  As you’ve learnt from the story above, that help can sometimes come in form of uncanny coincidences.

With time you’ll learn to recognize them as what they really are:answers to your heart felt desires that you expressed to your creator.

Our successes prove one need not scream or shout to get the creator to listen and respond to us!

Do You Want a Trial Version of my Excel-VB Driven Poultry Farm Manager Software?

I returned to Cotonou from Lagos, this past Saturday (18th January 2014). While holidaying with my family, I’d continued writing and coding 😉 It’s been hard work, but I’m now almost done building the pocket-friendly mini version of my increasingly popular Poultry Farm Manager Application.

In light of the number of broiler farm owners contacting me, I’ve decided to build in an interface for posting broiler farm data separately, from the layers. That way, a farm owner who has either or both groups of birds can make use of the same application.

Like I said it’s been hard work. But I continue to be inspired by the growing number of enquiries I’m getting for this new application. I never expected (even though I sensed people would find it potentially useful), that it would attract this much interest this quickly.

Just this morning, two new enquiries came into my mail box. One was made via the contact form on this blog. It was from the CEO of a farm in Canada.

The other came in via the web form on the page hosting the videos of my Poultry Layer Farm Manager and an explanation of my Best Operating Process Management System (BOPMS) ™ for Profitable Farm Management Mind Map.

This second enquiry (from a US based farm business owner) is what prompted me to write this article:

She specifically asked if I had a trial version of my app that she could try, and also wanted to know how much the app cost in US dollars.

Sadly, I Do Not Offer a Trial Version of My Excel-VB Driven Apps

That was not the first time I was getting that request. And each time I’ve had to say I offer no trial version – for now.

I wish I could oblige people who ask. But the realities make it impossible. At least for now.

The platform of Excel-Visual Basic is not secure enough to allow that. In truth, the averagely savvy Excel user, who knows how to follow instructions freely available on Excel support solutions sites, can find ready-to-use information, even code, to hack into any app.

In other words, someone like me who creates a new breed of customizable apps could easily have others basically hacking into it, and modifying it to suit their own purposes, which would most likely include selling it, without my being aware of it, or getting any benefits whatsoever.

My apologies. But my experiences in my part of the world make it necessary to operate this way..

In dealing with my international audience I’ve chosen to be cautious. I know other people sell their Excel apps and offer trials of some kind. However the type of applications I build are a bit unique – and the market I serve is quite narrow: farm business owners.

So it’s not like I have crowds of prospective buyers from which I can reap volume based profits even after I let a few “pirates” get in the door :-)

Once, while still based in Nigeria, I had a hotel client engage people he assumed to be competent experts, from Lagos’ Ikeja Computer village, to try hacking into the hotel management app I built for him.

He did this to try avoiding paying me the required fees to make changes he wanted.

Unfortunately for him, those he brought in were just typical CD pirates/vendors who take installation CDs/DVDs for different software programs and mass duplicate them for sale.

They did not understand how to deal with an Excel Workbook that had controlling code in a VBA interface.

When it became obvious they could not give him what he wanted, he sent for me. I only got to know the details of what transpired because a “bird” among his staff, whispered it to me after I arrived :-)

But that incident reinforced my belief that I must do my best to protect myself and my work from exploitation. In doing so, I also protect the investment of sincere others who choose to buy from me.

Think about it. If you paid me the required fee (e.g. N12,500 for my Ration Formulator), and later found that your friend simply copied it off your PC and easily made changes to use it for his own farm PC, would you not feel like you wasted your money? You most likely would!

Over the years I’ve developed code, designs, and procedures for my work and my apps, to minimize chances of my apps being exploited in that manner.

I realize, of course, that an intending hacker can come to buy directly from me, pretending to be a farm owner.

Indeed a real life farm owner could choose to buy from me. Then after confirming that it works well, s/he could choose to invest time and effort in hacking it, so as to sell it for profit by him/herself.

In my part of the world I have no doubt that this has crossed the minds of some people. They could even be doing it already. I would not know. And even if I did know, I would not be able to stop them.

But for buyers who stay with me, I plan to reward them with lifetime FREE upgrades and other benefits

Buyers of my Excel-VB Ration formulator will confirm that I’ve always sent them the latest upgrades. I am driven by a continuous improvement focus. In January 2013, I sent out an upgrade version.

Before getting my international agribusiness research paper (which featured my Ration Formulator) published, I’d begun working on a new version.

It will do least cost feed formulation and handle multiple amino acids balancing, to make it suitable for use by farmers who rear pigs, rabbits and other animals with more sensitive amino acid balancing needs. Each past buyer of the Ration Formulator will, again, get this new version free.

Many of the sales of my Excel-VB driven Ration Formulator have happened after the buyer watched the video demonstration on my Youtube channel.

In that way, I’d be able to get the apps to a point where they would have most, if not all features and functions that make them potentially useful for farms in any part of the world.

By then I would convert the app to an EXE application. This would be the safest way to offer a trial, that hackers would be least successful with.

I’ve Been Using Video Demos to Sell My Ration Formulator for Years

I began that journey in 2004. Since then many buyers and users within and outside Nigeria/Africa have provided me feedback and also made enquiries, which have helped me improve it.

Soon, I believe I’ll be ready to launch the full fledged EXE app. But the Excel-VB driven version will also remain available.

That way, a farmer will know what the trending industry standard is, compared to what he’s getting on his farm, at a point in time. This will guide him/her to make needed adjustments to get better results.
