Take Your Kids Out to Experience The REAL WORLD of Your Society [True Story: A Last Minute New Year’s Outing with my Kids to the Bar Beach via Public Transportation in Nigeria’s Lagos]

You take it for granted, but your kids don’t have a clue about it – even though they WILL have to deal with the reality in future.

I’m talking about everything you have to do, to provide for them and/or to pursue your goals in life.

That includes the STREET SMARTNESS to move around in YOUR society, without getting lost, losing money or possessions…or worse, falling victim to fraudsters, scammers and the like.

You know how to do all that today, having grown up in society learning from your mistakes and those of others. But do your kids have the same competence?

Can you confidently let them go out of your home, ALONE, without worrying about them till they return?

If you said NO, then this article suggests what you can do to equip them to develop the competence that will give you THAT peace of mind!

Remember what it was like when you went on your first “trip” away from home without your parents? How nervous and/or scared were you?

Right. I doubt any of us found it easy.

Yet most of us rarely consider that our kids will one day have to find their own way in the real world.

Evidence of this is seen in the way we let them move around in chauffeured cars, or hired taxis etc. We think of what is involved too simplistically, from our perspectives as adults who have already mastered the process – and fail to put ourselves in the shoes of our kids.

They do not have the benefit of access to our reservoir of YEARS of experience based insights to tap from for decision making!

This is why I write my articles on Best Practice Parenting – to warn parents who may not be aware – of the need to take deliberate conscious steps to give their kids real world relevant exposure to, and experience of various aspects of life that they will eventually have to deal with.

As usual I practice what I preach. Like I always say, no matter how successful you become in life, the success you achieve as a parent will ALWAYS be the most important success of all. Fail as a parent, then you’ve failed as a person – this is my belief.

In this article I share photos from an outing I deliberately took my kids on…for the New Year celebration…on Saturday 2nd January 2016

It was meant to give them yet another dimension of real world relevant education I’ve been taking them through in their Personal Achievement Coaching.

We’d talked about going to the beach for weeks before then. But each time something always happened to make us shelve the idea.

However, my 2 daughters, who had no conscious recollection of all the previous family outings we’d had on the beach (because they had been too young back then) remained insistent.

That morning, after initially telling them I needed to rest, I finally gave in and we began cleaning up the house.

One big concern had been what to do about the 4 remaining Cockerels (from the 9 delivered to us as part-payment by a client who signed up for my Sales and Marketing Coaching program on New Year’s day), which needed to be delivered to buyers.

Eventually we found a way to pack them into one of the rooms in a large wooden box.

Then we cooked a large quantity of jollof rice, with cubed meat, and soon got on our way.

1. Do your kids know how to move around by local transportation?

None of the kids had ever ridden on the famous Lagos BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) buses. So when I announced we would be going to Victoria Island and back via the BRTs, they were excited.

I felt it was important to let them compare traveling via BRT with going in private car as well as the rickety local transport buses.

beach2

Apart from discovering that the BRTs were more spacious, more comfortable, and FASTER, the kids were shocked to find (when buying their tickets) that the BRTs were 50% cheaper!

For instance, the local CMS bus conductor we spoke with on our way to the BRT terminal had told us the fee was N300 per head. We ended up paying only N150 [NB: Official exchange rate is N200 to $1 USD, but black market is about N270 to $1 USD]

This was an important lesson I hammered into their heads i.e. the fact that the benefits superior comfort and speed do NOT necessarily have to come at a higher cost!

Indeed, as most people who work on the Island will confirm, many car owners find it makes more sense to go via BRT and leave their cars at home. Not only do they expend less money, they also save precious energy and time too from driving their own cars in the troublesome Lagos traffic – which NEVER affects the BRTs, since the latter have their own lanes!

Below: It’s NOT easy to take steady shots while in a fast moving BRT bus…so I ended up with several blurred images. What I offer below are the best I could salvage from the lot.  I must say though that I really missed my Blackberry 9015 Pearl camera. In this kind of situation, it NEVER failed me!

2. We got off the BRT at the popular CMS bus stop, and I found myself forced to give in to the need to ease myself in a public toilet, that was (mercifully) located just at the edge of the jetty.

beach12

Er…we tried HARD to ignore the “messy” environs during our short stop over here – I was to their right, after easing myself. We spent some time watching people get on the speed boats behind us get transported to the rig. One of the boat’s engines stalled just before we left, and another was dispatched to help out.

I took that opportunity to tell my kids about my trip across the Atlantic Ocean in 1999, on my way back from Cameroon’s Douala. It was past midnight and our motor boat engine propeller got caught in a mass of water hyacinth right in the middle of the sea. It took the boat man over 1 hour to get it free, before we could continue our 12 hour journey to Oron in Nigeria. During that time, I said all sorts of prayers…lol! Click here to read the full story.

beach10

A few thoughts crossed my mind while I was in there e.g. where did the “flushed” stuff go?

The arrangement I saw there suggested it all went into the Lagoon…but I refuse(d) to believe that!

What do you think….???

Trust kids – by the time I came out, THAT was the first thing they asked me: “Tayo, where does all the poo poo go?

My answer: “I haven’t the slightest clue!”…then we all burst out laughing, because we were ALL thinking the same thing….:-))

Is someone from Lagos state government reading this?

If YES, it would not be a bad idea if you guys check out that public toilet facility and ensure what’s happening there is not something that could cause a major health problem.

This is after all the “Centre of Excellence!”

3. When we arrived at the Bar Beach, I got a rude reminder of the fact that I’d not visited the beach or even the Island since BEFORE I relocated to Benin Republic in April 2012.

Indeed the last time I was on the beach, with the family was back in December 2011.

beach9

A LOT has changed since then, especially due to the efforts made by the government to control the flooding from the sea, which sometimes covered the roads and even swallowed the lower floors of buildings close tot he beach.

As a result, the beach we knew was no longer accessible, having been sealed off using a barrier setup by the construction company engaged to put in the reinforcements to check the waves and erect structures on various parts.

The kids were disappointed.

We were forced to join other families who had resigned themselves to playing on the narrow strip of concrete left accessible.

Left with no alternative, especially since we arrived there after 5p.m, we made the best of what there was to be had.

After they gobbled up the jollof rice (including half of mine!) the kids went for ice creams, drinks, horse riding (our smallest member VERY reluctantly!), till night fell.

beach21

beach18

The girls were the main agitators all through that outing: they wanted a horse ride, so I let them have it. Pity the photos of them actually riding away turned out blurred (Once again, I miss my Pearl 9105 camera).

beach20

They kept asking for one treat or the other, and I made a point of letting them have it, to the intermittent consternation of the boys :-))

beach17

Then we began strolling around the whole place, taking photos, chatting, just to get some variety. Like I said, we just had to make the best of what we had…lol!

NB: The beach was to our left…notice the fence

beach1

BELOW: Tayo Solagbade Junior – Protesting vigorously and with real terror in his eyes, as he was being put on the horse he’d just watched his sisters dismount from! He had the same reaction to the Cockerels we brought home until they were down to the last one, at which point he got bold enough actually touch it…!

beach16

The rest of the clan have a nickname they coined for him which I’m NOT at liberty to share here. Here he is after we finally got him to stay long enough on the horse to have his photo taken (phew!)

beach15

beach14

beach13

By 7.30p.m, the girls were still saying “let’s wait a little longer” when I reminded them the last BRT would leave by 8p.m – meaning we would have to take the local buses if we were late.

That got their attention: none of them wanted to go back in the small, rickety, cramped buses.

We hired a Keke Marwa (commercial tricycle) to take us back to the TBS (Tafawa Balewa Square) BRT terminal, and boarded a BRT back to our locality.

The kids were especially excited on mounting this return bus because it was one of the new ones, and the air conditioning as well as on board TV was still fully functional.

They were glued to the TV for most of the trip, as different content flashed across its screen – including music videos, promos, news, interview etc.

Any doubts I had that they understood the news reports in particular were however cleared when – after we got back home – I heard them tell their mom about the report about a lady who got her finger cut off by robbers who wanted her gold ring!

By the time we went to bed, I reflected on the day’s events, and noted with satisfaction that a lot of what we’d seen/done had prompted the kids to ask questions that provided ME a good opportunity to give them information & tell them TRUTHS.

A good example was the truth about how to move around safely in the real world of our society, and what to look for before asking for directions; who to ask for directions; where to ask for directions etc.

These may seem obvious to us as adults, but in a place like Lagos, our kids in their innocence will rarely realize asking questions in the wrong manner can make dubious characters focus on you as a potential victim or target!

My purpose is to let my kids have a DIRECT experience of, and exposure to what happens in society daily, in a way that will prepare them physically, psychologically and emotionally, to move around confidently, and successfully on their own.

School cannot teach them that.

Neither can reading of books.

They simply need to go out and DO IT.

What better way for them to do so, than with their own parent(s)!

PS: When we eventually relocate to Benin Republic’s Cotonou, we’ll be doing something similar, to get the kids familiar with moving around in THAT society.

Forget the Gloomy Economic Predictions! Your Success is 99% Within YOUR Control

[NB: This is a transcript of my New Year audio message]

This is Tayo Solagbade, and I want to challenge your thoughts a bit in this short audio clip I’m doing, with regard to the issue of jobs availability, unemployment locally in Nigeria, in Africa, and loss of jobs by people who are Africans based abroad in diaspora, and who are being probably sent home, losing their jobs and having to return home after decades working overseas.

And the fact that they were told "Oh because there are no jobs" so there’s nothing esle to keep them there, and they have to return home, because those economies in Europe and America can no longer support them, and are trying to provide for their own citizens – the native citizens…

All of those theories…that’s why I’m doing this audio:

I want to pass a message to the individual who fits any of those descriptions…

Maybe you’re somebody locally in Nigeria or Africa who cannot find a job, lost your job, are looking for a new job, or a better job…

Or you’re somebody who has been abroad, and you’ve lost your job, cannot find a job, are looking for a job…

Wherever you may be operating from or may have been operating from, I just want to tell you something:

The truth of the matter is that what your experiences and circumstances turn out to be in life, will be 99% within your contol!

I am not God – of course! – and I am NOT a magician.

But I am telling you this because it is the way I have lived my life, and I’ve seen the results every day: My life is a miracle, and my life is proof that the Creator will reward those who put in the effort to make themselves better, with faith and persistence.

So I want to tell you, that no matter what anybody is writing in the papers, on the Internet, or saying on radio or TV, the truth is that YOU are the master of the ship of YOUR life!

This is NOT a motivational talk. I am going to give you specific ideas you should take and apply in your life, if you know you don’t want to be one of those sorry statistics they’re gonna reel out at the end of the year saying "Oh it was a rough and tough year for people".

The truth of the matter is this: Because you are a child of God, YOU and WEALTH have an affinity for each other.

Understand that unless you do not have faith in YOUR Creator, that is the only reason you will accept that there is going to be a gloomy year: "Er this year is going to be a gloomy year, because of the lack of oil…"

All of that is just "story". It does NOT apply to everybody. It applies to those who accept it as their reality.

If you don’t accept it as your reality, and you take ACTION to make it NOT be your reality, it will NOT be your reality.

Now specifically, what I wanna tell you is this:

You need skills – and you need to acquire and develop skills that the market in which you are going to function – or the market you want to target – will appreciate enough to pay you profitably for.

If you are NOT willing to do that, then FORGET about dealing with hard times or winning in hard times or overcoming hard times.

You must be willing to adapt by acquiring and developing skills, knowledge and attitudes that will help you flourish and overcome any adversity or changes in your fortunes that may occur…

Because life is NOT a straight line graph. Life is not a bed of roses. We know this and yet we behave as if we expect it to be like that.

You cannot say you want to be successful, in spite of fluctuations in fortunes of societies and people around you, and then you still sit around doing what you were doing last year, 2 years ago.

You have to be willing to study trends, anticipate changes, and adjust yourself accordingly to make the most of waves that are going to come your way – or get thrown your way by life.

So skills are the key to your survival.

When I talk about skills (I mean) skills in any area of endeavour whatsoever. Whatever your talents, whatever your abilities are, you need to be able to identify skills that are marketable, that can make people pay you money to apply those skills for them – to their benefit.

Okay?

If you’re able to do that, you will never have a problem. Yes there will be ups and downs, but you will always have the answer.

You will always know that all you need to do is to apply yourself, make changes to your strategy, and still apply yourself again, and you will get the results you want.

I’m gonna give you a specific example.

For Africans in particular…as a matter of fact, for anybody anywhere in the world, the truth of the matter is that the Internet, PC and Internet technology, in conjunction with the use of smart phone technology and all of that – all the telecoms resources that we have today, that make this world such a rapidly changing marketplace.

If you can find a way to link what you do to the use of PC and Internet resources, you are going to succeed no matter the area of endeavour you are in.

It’s just going to be a matter of you using your creativity.

Specifically, if you can find a way to help people solve problems they have in:

a. the use of PC and Internet technology

b. the use of PC and Internet technology to achieve their offline goals.

If you can do one of those 2 things, you will not have a problem finding income that you need to live well, even in the hardest of times.

If you’re somebody that is creative, then you can develop solutions that are digital that people can buy from you, and that has nothing to do with what you studied. It has nothing to do with whether or not you’re in paid employment. You can do this at night, and resume at work by 8 and still do it when you get home at night again.

This is the thing. You need to stop thinking conventional. You’ve got to be able to think outside the box – in fact just get rid of the box completely!

If you’re unwilling to do this, then expect your road to be rough in 2016 and beyond.

But if you’re willing to think the way I’m talking about, then I assure you nobody can stop you from growing your brand, no matter what area of endeavour you’re in.

And you will always find yourself thanking God, living a life that is glorifying to him, because people will be asking you: "What is your secret?"

Because even when people are complaining, you will not be complaining , you will be giving thanks. You will be expressing gratitude.

So, don’t let anybody tell you that there is one gloomy prediction that is going to apply to you. It is a decision you can take. You have the power in your hand to decide how your future will be – with faith in God, and with the willingness to apply yourself with persistence.

If you do these things I describe in this audio, or those that you find when you check out my website – www.tayosolagbade.com – your story will be different from others.

THE FARM CEO (Issue 31): How ICT can help small-scale farmers, AGRICULTURAL OPERATIONS TECHNOLOGY FOR SMALL FARMERS IN EASTERN AND SOUTHERN AFRICA, Empowering farmers through mobile communication in west Africa, How Low-Tech Farming Innovation Can Make African Farmers Climate-Resilient, Farmer Organizations Work Better with ICT

[Tagline: If it can help your farm business, you’ll find it in THE FARM CEO™ Newspaper ]

In this first issue for this year (2016), I feature 5 reports on application of ICT to development of African Farming. This page’s article echoes a LOT of the sentiments I’ve expressed over the years about the need for small farmers and larger ones to embrace PC and Internet technology to boost their business growth.

PREVIEW

Agriculture in Senegal is threatened by pests such as locusts, birds and fruit flies, drought, flooding and lack of financial support by government – challenges that often pave the way to low output.

The rain-fed sector employs over 75% of the country’s workforce. But Lamine Guèye is one of the small-scale farmers who have been struggling recently since the 2011-12 agriculture production failed to live up to its expectations.

Asked if he has ever heard of the use of ICTs in farming, he told Biztechafrica: “I don’t know anything about it, but I heard someone was saying on the radio that one day we might end up using technology in farming.

“I also heard that in other countries farmers have computers and other equipment to monitor weather patterns such as rainfall, drought and flooding, also check what kind of products the market wants and the prices of those products.

Boost Your Biz Marketing With Auto-Run CDROM Promos & Branded VB-Driven Power Point Presentations

Over the years, in a bid to increase the effectiveness of my business marketing, while lowering the expenses I incur in the process, I have explored the use of a variety of what I consider relatively under-utilised media.

Even though I cannot say that I have achieved massive success through their use, the fact is that they have significantly facilitated my ability to demonstrate to prospective clients/customers, what I can do for them.

It has always been my thinking that WE are the ones who must routinely CREATIVELY explore NEW and better ways to make use of our constantly improving technologies – such as the PC, the software that run in them, the Internet etc.

Below, I share my ideas about how you can make use of (1) Custom Auto-Run CDROM Presentations and (2) Branded VBA-Automated Microsoft Power Point Presentations to achieve improved business marketing impact.

1. Custom Auto-Run CDROM Presentations

I actively promote the use of auto-run CDROMs as an offline complement to other business /organisational marketing resources. Not all of your target audience will have access (or time) to visit your site online. Nor will they all see your paper, TV and Radio adverts.

But a professionally created automated CDROM presentation gives you a low cost but highly reliable alternative means of delivering your message to your prospects, clients/customers. Think of it as your Marketing Manager everywhere you cannot be.

Not only does it let you say more(via audio-video input) into over 600MB of CDROM storage space, it also enables you do so in a way that increases the impact of your branding(e.g. custom CDROM labels to match your website design).

Auto-run CDROM presentations are a low-cost one-time expense BUT deliver long-term useful shelf-life value. This is especially true when you consider that they can be mass-duplicated very cheaply.

2. Branded/VBA-Automated Microsoft Power Point Presentations

Why would anyone want to make a Power Point template and/or presentation for the organisation s/he runs?

One key justification is often the need to stand out from the crowd or to be easily recognisable. You may also wish to communicate a unique style, or simply avoid being confused with others.

For instance, let’s say you’re invited to speak at the same event with other decision makers from different departments, organisations etc.

More or less everyone has access to MS Power Point, and most are likely to use the templates/features pre-installed with the application.

And THAT is the problem.

It would be nearly impossible to create a presentation unique enough to impress your knowledgeable audience.

You can create custom graphic designs and use them to produce unique templates for your presentations, PLUS incorporate advanced automation using Visual Basic Macros built into Active-X Controls.

The result will be a fully customised/VBA-automated presentation 100% unique to you.

You Need to Create an Environment That Enables People to Pay Taxes [An Open Letter to Goverments]

What follows below is a transcript version of an audio message I recorded on this subject [To get the MP3 recording, click here to request it].

I asked a question on Social Media recently on this same theme….

Why is it that governments generally (especially those in this part of the world i.e. Africa, Nigeria in particular)…why is it that they challenge businesses and individuals in business to pay taxes, despite the fact that they generally do not create an enabling conducive environment for those business owners to flourish – in a way that paying taxes does not come across to them (i.e the business persons) as a kind of necessary evil?

Now, I ask that question because I see too much of this entitlement mentality amongst people who are in government.

They come to you in your hotel, restaurant, bar, hair dressing salon, consulting firm, and they announce that you’re owing 2 years back taxes or that you’re to pay taxes for employees, and all of that.

And yet, the same people behave in ways – professionally – that do not enable businesses to flourish. They refuse to let the laws that are laid down operate the way they should. They connive with other people who are NOT in government to defraud the government, and therefore make the government systems inefficient.

So – for instance – when the contracts are awarded for the road to be repaired, they are not repaired.

[For illustration purposes, imagine I’m a manufacturer] The bad roads damage my vehicle when I transport my products to my factory. There are hold ups that prevent my trucks from arriving on time, so I lose production hours.

There’s no power supply, because some people who work in the state owned power company, are misbehaving, and therefore probably for instance, connive with some other people to make sure we don’t have electricity, so that some people who sell diesel and petrol make money.

The point I’m making is this:

If government want society to be better. If they really want to see progress and have proof that they are functioning efficiently, and delivering value to the people they lead, then they need to begin doing that in a different way from what they’ve been used to.

So for starters I believe that the emphasis on taxes as the primary source of income generation for the government needs to change.

It doesn’t make sense – because if you want to be able to depend on taxes, you’ve got to create an environment that enables people to pay taxes.

If people are struggling to survive, their ability to pay taxes will be a joke!

And that is why it then tends to be a case of arm twisting people, to get them to pay taxes.

It doesn’t make any sense. The people you’re supposed to serve, who are supposed to feel good you about you being in government, then begin to see you as a kind of a monster that wants to kill them – because what they feel they need to hold on to, to make their businesses survive, and even to take care of their loved ones, is what they have to give up to you in form of taxes.

Yes, we know that as government you want to develop the society and infrastructure.

The point is this:

If we cannot feed ourselves, how do we pay you the taxes to develop the infrastructure?

The infrastructure is meant for people who are in a good state of health, who are well-fed -to enjoy.

If I cannot feed well with my family, do you think I’ll have the time or resources to go to the beautiful park you’ve built? Or do you think I can afford to buy a car to run on the roads you claim you want to build?

So the first step is that the government needs to understand that people need them to behave, and create systems that WORK!

But let’s take it a step further – another point I want to make is this:

Governments need to look beyond taxes.

People would not have such great difficulty paying taxes, IF government made it easy for them to do it..

You keep talking about creating enabling environments, but you don’t do that. Yet you want people to keep paying taxes as if they earn money from some other planet.

It’s the same planet that we’re all on, that YOU refuse to manage properly, and make conducive for us to flourish in as business owners, that you demand we pay taxes in.

Like I said before, it makes no sense!

What are supposed to do: Go and mint our own money to pay you taxes??

That’s one point.

Another point: When we hear that people in government are stealing/diverting public funds, those are often monies obtained from tax paying citizens!

The annoying thing is that the people that are caught doing that never get put in jail, and so they return to steal more funds, while the rest of us continue paying taxes, because we’re not in government!

Why doesn’t government show us the way?

Why don’t you lead the way?

You want us to pay taxes? Why don’t you show us how to make money in the economy you created for us?

Why don’t you, for instance, run enterprises that do not benefit from “awoof” funding i.e. why don’t you begin to setup establishments that do not benefit from government subventions, handouts or bail outs?

Why don’t you establish profit making organizations or enterprises that provide value adding services and products in society, like normal businesses do?

Operate as if you’re a private enterprise. Get parastatals that you have, that will actually not be functioning by way of government subventions being dished out to them.

Instead, challenge the people you put in charge of those organizations, to provide value adding services/products the way those other private establishments do, and then generate profits on their own.

Why would you want to do that?

It’s simple. First of all, such organizations need not struggle to find startup capital. You – the government parent will supply that. Let’s assume we will allow that basic concession.

But they would need to go through the startup process, and then begin to function independently of you.

YOU would use THAT to test the waters in which you’re asking the rest of us to swim!

If you tell us that we should make profits and be able to pay you what is due to you as government, YOU put an enterprise on the ground that is able to do that.

Then when that enterprise achieves that outcome of being able to generate profits that it can pay back to you, it would become a measure against which the rest of us will be assessed.

For instance, if the company is into printing of branded gift items, who don’t you do it as a profit generating arm of your establishment.

Then at the end of the year, if the organization declares a profit doing that, then it becomes a model that the rest of us can emulate.

We would say:

“Oh, this is how a business enterprise should be run, because it has been running independently of its government-parent, and it makes money enough to generate profits to pay – in part – as taxes to the government.”

The rest of us would therefore have no issues. We would simply come there to LEARN from YOU (i.e. the government-parent), how to run a business in YOUR economy, and profit from it.

If YOU (as government) cannot get an enterprise of your own to flourish in the economy you create, but you demand that the rest of us generate profits, and pay you taxes from them, then I think you’re trying to eat your cake and have it – which is unrealistic!

THAT is my message to government!

Now, I’ve shared a lot of ideas on this theme in past write-ups I’ve done on my website – www.tayosolagbade.com – under the “My Ideas for Making Nigeria Better” category.

In particular, there’s a book I published, based on a 2006 White Paper, in which I advocate for societies to develop what I call DIGITAL MULTIPRENEURS.

This is the key to the future (I’m not asking you to buy my book. I can send you a complimentary PDF copy – just ask me using the contact form on my website).

In that book, I’ve explained that governments that want to empower citizenry to get to a point where you eliminate poverty, the best way to go is to use what is happening today.

We are in an information driven world. PC/Internet technology, and mobile phone technology are transforming societies and economies.

People keep talking about gloomy predictions for 2016, but we also know that there are some businesses that are just flourishing more than ever before, because they are leveraging everything they do, based on technology!

Now, what is the way we can take advantage of this technology based revolution?

Simple.

We need to develop a new base of manpower that uses creative thinking based on implementation of technology – and I’m NOT talking about building a spaceship.

I’m talking more about things like what Wole Soyinka did – and does (as a writer), Chinua Achebe, Niyi Osundare.

But this time taking advantage of technology to do it more time, effort and cost-effectively, reaching out to a potentially unlimited audience.

Writers are people that use their intellect, in conjunction with technology and the Internet, to generate income. And there are examples of people in different parts of the world who are doing that profitably as well as right here in Africa and Nigeria.

The young man in Ibadan, that I’ve always talked about – Bamidele Onibalusi – is an example. At a point he was earning over $5,000 USD as a 16 year old, writing articles for clients in different parts of the world!

What stops us from generating an army of people who can write African stories like Chinua Achebe, but then deploy them using the web?

That is just one example.

I sell custom Excel-VB software internationally. I have buyers from in and out of Africa connecting with me all the time through my website, and the web.

They ask for my products and pay for them using Western Union, bank transfers as well as Paypal (via a 3rd party).

What stops us from building an army of people that can create solutions that the whole world wants, and thus generate foreign exchange (forex)?

I earn forex. I earn income in Euros, Pounds and Dollars.

What stops the government from training graduates to do that?

Why can’t a department of the government actually
launch an enterprise that will be run by people who are job seekers that will be trained? Why can’t we have that?

Why should government be thinking of getting money all the time from citizens through taxes?

Why can’t government generate income using creative processes or methods?

As a matter of fact you have the edge over the rest of us, because by being in government, and you announce a government based enterprise that’s trying to run a profit making entity, you would get credibility, both locally and internationally.

For instance, international organizations – and even local ones – might want to partner with you.

But I think the reason why this option is avoided by most people in government is because they like the easy way of getting money.

So my challenge to people in government is there is no need to give us gloomy predictions. The truth is that it depends on how you choose to approach the situation before you.

Whatever is looking gloomy in any economy anywhere in the world, is a function of the creative application of intelligence to it.

In Africa right now, we have an edge in terms of the fact that we have a huge base of manpower. And the way we make of technology to exploit the manpower and other resources we have, will be the key to our ability to grow and flourish.

There’s a lot of stuff we’re selling locally in Africa, that people in other parts of the world, can be made aware of using PC and Internet technology, in terms of marketing. And then ensuring that we demonstrate integrity in delivering what is ordered from us.

The Chinese do it and the Indians too. What stops us from doing it?

So, it’s about bringing about change, and the government can LEAD that change, if they are willing to stop looking for entitlement earnings from us, and begin to imagine that they can LEAD this change!

This is my message to the government, and I hope it gets to those who are responsible, and they will take decisions that will deliver better returns to us, in terms of the investment we make in our governments.

Some call it “Modern Barter”: Done right, it can dramatically boost your sales, as well as profit margins, beyond what you’re currently able to achieve.

Sadly, many business owners still do not know “barter exchange” is an option they can adopt. As a result, their business transactions, and resulting growth tend to suffer NEEDLESS cash flow limitations!

1 of 2: PUBLIC SPEAKING –Products and Services Bartering Can Make You More Money! [True Stories & Research Proof – from Harvard & Others]

Read the TRUE story about how my “barter exchange” habit won me a new client on New Year’s day (2016) – including tips on how YOU can do it too. I also highlight a Harvard Business Review/other reports that prove bartering of products/services is practiced globally – and works.

Harvard Calls It the “The Exploding Business of Bartering”

In a 2012 Harvard Business Review report titled “The Exploding Business of Bartering“, it was reported that over 400,000 companies across the world used barter exchange to earn up to $12 billion US dollars, assets they had, which were underutilized or not wanted.

Apart from noting that Pepsi took over the USSR market in 1990 using barter exchange of their drink for vodka, the report points out that professionals in various fields, like doctors and electricians, trade their services for goods, services or “trade credits”’ – which in turn gets used to cover their expenses in other areas e.g. printing, advertising or travel.

An excellent article titled “Cashless business models and the potential of modern barter” authored by Oana-Maria Pop of hypeinnovation.com, discusses various interesting examples of modern barter applications used by real world individuals and organizations engaged in business.

An example she gave that I found especially noteworthy was that of a payment in kind program called “Pago en Especie” developed in Mexico in the ’50’s. It enables over 700 graphic artists, painters and sculptors pay income taxes to government in kind, by donating original artwork they create to the state.

I think the concept can be successfully modified and adapted for use in any other societies across the world – including those in Africa.

My (Latest) True Story About Products/Services Bartering

I shared this news on Facebook when it happened – last Friday (New Year’s day – 2016). It was a great way to start the year!

Just like it happened a year before, I hit the ground running, in the early hours of 1st January, with my first sale (as I’d worked hard to do).

But that’s not why I feel this achievement is worth sharing with you…

Instead it is the manner in which I made the sale happen that I consider noteworthy:

This new client (a Farm CEO who had been a newsletter subscriber), had asked me to let him discuss my offer with his wife (who manages their farm) following their paid consultation session with me the day before (31st December 2015) in a fast food restaurant.

He then called me about 8.30 a.m. that New Year’s day to confirm he’d made payment to take up my barter exchange option.

I’d offered the client a promo of my Sales & Marketing Coaching program: He took up the barter option which required payment of ONLY 60% in cash, and the rest 40% in form of market ready Cockerels they had for sale – all up front.

A few hours later, he was met by my 14 year old son, who took possession of the nine (9) cockerels he had brought over in his space wagon, straight from the farm in Ogun state.

Photo of the nine (9) cockerels the client had brought over in his space wagon, from the farm in Ogun state, after my 14 year old son after he returned from picking up the birds in a hired Keke Marwa

My sons and their sisters have since slaughtered 2 of the birds (the second just this morning), given out 2 to their – maternal and paternal – grand parents, and gone round the neighborhood to sell the rest at discounted prices, as part of their practical selling skills development training.

Below: Photo of my 14 year old son and his 9 year old sister with the birds.

Photo of my 14 year old son and his 9 year old sister with the birds - we now have only ONE left, awaiting pickup by an intending buyer I spoke with over the weekend. Each child got to keep the money from his/her sale of a bird - that was the incentive I used to get their interest in going out to find buyers!

We now have only ONE Cockerel left – and it’s awaiting pickup by an intending buyer who indicated interest with over the weekend. [NB: Each child got to keep the money from his/her sale of a bird – that was the incentive I used to get them interested in going out to sell!]

Like I stated in my Facebook post, I’ve been selling my products and services using this strategy for years.

But I learnt to do it by adapting business marketing ideas Burt Dubin shares on his Speaker Mentoring website at SpeakingSuccessDotCom?

It’s amazing what you can achieve if you develop a critical thinking habit and work hard to implement what you think up!

“Many people make the mistake of thinking marketing is about selling. The truth is that it is NOT. Marketing is about getting noticed and building credibility in the minds of potential buyers, until they are convinced enough to take buying action – which then leads to the sale.” – Tayo K. Solagbade

Since I began using this barter exchange strategy, I’ve periodically shared my experiences in articles – for instance about how to use it to get around the so-called “Lack of Capital” [ Read my article titled “If You Lack Capital, Intelligent Multipreneuring Can Help You Succeed!]

In past articles I’ve referred to instances in which I got large quantities of Heat Transfer printed Eyo Masquerade T-Shirts produced locally by an IT client company’s gifts branding arm, as 50% part payment for my Web Marketing Systems development service.

Aside from my experiences, I’ve also witnessed examples of barter exchanges between hotel clients (using my custom Excel-VB software) and media companies (e.g. TV, Radio, Newspapers/Magazines) whose editors/staff/reporters get FREE room and/or food, as payment for FREE or discounted promotional adverts done on their platform.

Example of a Barter Exchange Service Provider: The Hudson Barter Exchange(HBE)

The Hudson Barter Exchange’s tagline is: Get What You Need.
Pay With What You Have.

I find it quite apt.

I tell this to my clients ALL the time: You can use what you have to get what you want…even when it’s NOT cash! You simply need to find a provider willing to do business on those terms. My experiences indicate that if you search long and hard enough, you will find one!

HBE purchases bulk gift vouchers from a Restaurant Owner member, which it then sell to other members…

The restaurant owner member uses this strategy to fill empty tables on a daily basis. In exchange the restaurant business gets cash less access to website SEO/photography, pest control, refrigeration repairs, and even the services of an accountant – all of which normally would have built up to a substantial total CASH expense.

The long run benefit is that the restaurant owner records a larger monthly profit margin.

I discovered this idea of bartering services, from reading Burt Dubin’s business marketing articles (for experts-who-speak), in which he suggested that a speaking professional boost sales by offering barter exchange opportunities to clients.

As he rightly noted, most corporate clients with the means will gladly arrange FREE hotel accommodation for you and your spouse/family, as a form of part payment of your program fees.

It benefits THEM because they get to spend LESS cash.

It benefits YOU because there will be LESS pressure on you to reduce your fees to make a sale, since the client will have to pay you much LESS cash, AND you also get to enjoy what you want (a pleasurable stay in the hotel, with your loved ones), without dipping your hands into your pockets.

There are 2 major ways to boost PROFITS in your business – and barter exchange facilitates BOTH:

a. By reducing your costs

or

b. By increasing your sales

Modern barter offers a reliable long term means to make sales and also earn income without using cash.

With regard to making sales, getting paid – in part or full – via barter will help you reduce spending of your limited cash i.e. “a”.

That means you get to spend LESS what is in (or what comes into) your pockets or coffers, thereby boosting your profit margins.

With regard to making purchases you need, barter AGAIN enables you achieve that goal without actually having to spend cash from your pockets or coffers.

If done right, you can get to eat your cake and have it, with regard to your barter based cash less business transactions

Final Words: Decide how much percentage barter you need to do [Hint: 100% may not be good for your cash flow]

Modern barter can be successfully and profitably engaged in by any kind of individual or organization. The parties concerned must simply be ready to work out an arrangement agreeable to all concerned.

Personally, I abide by a strict rule of NOT doing more than 50% barter.

This is because I consider it crucial that I GROW my reserve of cash, even as I enjoy the cash less benefits of barter exchange. Very rarely, in the kinds of businesses I’m involved in, will it be profitable, for the long term to do 100% barter exchange.

You will have to, of course, decide what works for you.

Apart from growing your cash storage, you must not forget that you will still have need for cash to cover certain expenses that barter may not be suited for.

A good example, in my case has to do with my need for petrol to power the generator I use in my Lagos home, as well as my Internet connectivity expenses, which can add up quite a bit over time.

Apart from that, your domestic expenses on the home front are unlikely to lend themselves readily to barter exchange. That’s why you’ll be wise to negotiate some cash payment alongside the barter element.

My experiences indicate that most clients are likely to readily welcome the opportunity to pay LESS cash, so as to settle your balance as payment in kind.

Question: But who is Burt Dubin, and why do I (Tayo K. Solagbade) think you should you learn from

him?

Answer: Burt is a 3 decade veteran in the professional speaking business. After achieving top level cross continental success as an

expert-speaker, he has established a reputation for mentoring some of the highest paid speakers in the world. He owns SpeakingBizSuccess.com, SpeakingSuccess.com and BurtDubin.com.

Burt helps those he mentors (experts-who-speak) to Position, Package, Promote, and Present* themselves successfully to clients (*He calls

them the 4Ps). That’s why it’s no surprise that on Burt’s website, considerable space capital is devoted to useful business marketing articles as well as products.

It might also interest you to know that MANY years back, Burt established himself as one of the best marketing minds in the world. To really put this FACT in

proper perspective, I’ll provide more specific details in form of an example.

A few years ago, Burt contributed an article to a powerful publication titled “The Most Effective Articles Ever – By The World’s Top Marketers“. That 574 page ebook features timeless marketing advice from 71 of the world’s top marketers – including Jack

Trout, Joe Vitale, Yanik Silver…and Burt Dubin.

That’s ample proof that (in addition to Public Speaking), Burt would be a great resource to learn business marketing from!

Full Disclosure: I represent Burt as Sole Agent for his products/services, which means if YOU buy from him, I get paid.

But that’s NOT the main reason I represent and recommend him. I have benefited in many ways by learning from Burt. Through his writing, his audio recordings,

and from directly relating with him.

Before we teamed up in 2011, I’d been studying his work and adapting it to succeed in my work from way back in 2002. It does not matter what part of the world

you’re in. If you know how to adapt them to suit your peculiar local needs, Burt’s ideas and strategies WILL work for you. I am living proof of it!

That’s why I never tire of CONFIDENTLY recommending him to others.

If you need help putting the ideas shared above to use, let me know HERE.
