No. 140: Knowledge Without “Know-How” Rarely Yields Success
Knowing “what to do” is crucial. However, knowing “HOW to do it” is the key to ultimate success. The former has to do with your knowledge. The latter relates to your ability to apply that knowledge to achieve results you want i.e. your “know-how”.
Your success in life depends on being able to develop the latter!
To illustrate my point, I’ll use analogies that we can all relate to.
As an employee, your on-the-job “know-how” will determine your success or otherwise.
For instance, a sales person would “know” that s/he needs to meet the monthly sales target set by the boss or company.
That could be to sell one thousand crates of farm eggs for instance.
But “how” to do that, may not be something s/he would be very clear about.
So many ways exist to go about “selling” anything. And without a clear idea of which “way” would yield the best results (i.e. actual – not credit – sales that put money in your pockets), “knowing” what to do can be quite useless sometimes!
This is why sales people attend (or get sent on) Sales and Marketing Training course. The hope or expectation is that they will come away with the additional ability to find profitable PAYING customers to sell to.
That’s what often separates top sales persons from all others.
But not everyone “knows how”. And that includes those who provide “training” or “lectures” on sales and marketing!
Trainers lacking “know-how” (and those who learn from them) tend to focus on “theory” (i.e. knowledge). They ignore the hands-on element/practical that cements learners’ “know-how”.
As an Entrepreneur, Your Selling Success Depends On Your “Know-How”
You most likely know your stuff inside out, backwards and forwards – like Burt Dubin suggests.
If you don’t please make out time to do so. It’s a basic requirement for successfully selling yourself as an expert-who-speaks.
But knowing your stuff is just one side to it.
“Knowing HOW” to sell yourself to – and subsequently IMPRESS – paying clients is however another thing entirely.
Sadly, I see too many people who think they can simply jump in the pond and start “catching the fish”.
They fail to realize that careful planning and implementation of a tried and tested METHODs is best for recruiting good buyers.
No One is Born With “Know-How”…
None of us is. However some of us arrive more equipped to demonstrate “know-how”, than others.
In reality, anyone so willing, can successfully develop it to achieve ANY goal s/he desires. All that is required is the conviction to do what it takes, for as long as may be needed.
I say this based on my achievements as an entrepreneur over the past decade. My conviction also comes from studying and relating with significant others who have achieved great feats by developing their own “know-how”.
One of them is Burt Dubin. Through exposure to him, my ability to “sell to ” and “impress” my target audience has greatly improved.
It is noteworthy, however, that I had to ADD my own uniqueness to the mix, to make it work.
In other words, developing “know-how” requires learning proven ways, and adapting them to your unique skills/needs.
Two Ways I Believe “Know-How” Can be Developed
If you desire significant long term success, aiming for methods that yield sustainable results is best.
This is why developing your “know-how” relevant to achieving your goal(s) is so crucial. I discuss two possible ways to do that…
1. Developing “Know-How” Via Trial and Error:
I personally consider this the hard way. It involves trying out different ideas, concepts, strategies and techniques untill you narrow down to what works, then refine – and perfect – it.
An Example: I’ve been interacting with some Farm CEOs about my new Sales and Marketing Coaching and Support Service.
What I’ve noticed is that a few who contact me think my FREE Power Point Slide show presentation contains everything, which means they don’t need me.
Burt Dubin, in one of his articles, referred to such people as “free loaders”. Those not really interested in the solution I offer. They only seek to get what they can without paying.
The truth is however that my slide show’s content is simply a condensed version of ideas I’ve shared in past Cost-Saving Farm Business Ideas articles.
Basically, it tells you as a Farm CEO WHAT you need to do, to find profitable buyers.
But the HOW is not specified. And it’s the HOW that really matters. That’s what determines your success.
The “HOW” (of finding profitable buyers) is what Farm CEOs need my help with!
It goes without saying that you can work out “how to” by yourself.
But you may not have the benefit of saving time, effort, and resources, AND also being sure that you’re on the right path.
You would, by implication, be towing the “Trial and Error” line.
There would be nothing wrong with that, if you don’t mind the negatives that could result.
However, for those keen to make more productive use of their time and effort, the next option below, will appeal more to them…
2. Developing “Know-How” Via Tried & Proven Systems:
This option involves tapping into the experience based real world relevant guidance of others who have done what you wish to do – or something similar.
You can achieve this learning through studying books, audios, videos, articles, reports etc prepared by successful others you identify to offer the wisdom you seek.
In some case, you may also be able to connect directly with such persons for personal coaching or mentoring.
All or some of that could be free, or for a fee. Either way, access to their expertise in this regard would be available.
Typically, these would be accomplished experts in your area of focus/interest. And they would have condensed their knowledge and “know-how” into a form others can learn from.
Quite often, many would have used the “trial and error” method mentioned in 1. above – out of necessity – to succeed.
Now, being a Best Practice and Performance Improvement advocate, I believe in NOT reinventing the wheel.
That’s why I prefer this second option (of using proven “systems” to develop the “know-how” I need to achieve long term success.
I’ll conclude this write-up by describing one such system…
