PII 047: Sometimes Resourcefulness, NOT MONEY, Is What You Need to Succeed [Hint: A Lack of Ideas Can Hold You Back – A Lack of Money Cannot]

The ability to survive and/or thrive during a period of economic downturn is a function of how creative people can get.

Unfortunately, when things are tough financially, as they tend to be during such periods, most of us tend to focus too much attention on money and our lack (or what we perceive to be our lack) of it.

In other words, I’m saying that a lot of us want to succeed, but the minute we discover that we are limited in our financial means, with regard to achieving our set goals, we tend to get easily demoralized and give up psychologically, leading us to ultimately surrender in physical terms – by quitting.

My message in this maiden issue of my Performance Improvement Ideas (PII) newsletter is therefore that sometimes what you need to succeed is RESOURCEFULNESS and not money.

How are you living your life with regard to achieving your valued goals?

The way you think about the problem you believe you have, especially with regard to achieving your goals using money, will determine how far you can go.

Quite often, you may find it useful to look into historical information available from other societies and cultures outside yours for ideas you can adopt or adapt to suit your unique needs or preferences.

If you keep an open mind, you’ll be shocked to find out that some people from the past you study achieved great success by being resourceful, so that their lack of money could not limit them.

What ideas can you borrow from them?

One big problem I see is that a degree of mis-education is holding many people back. And then there’s some amount of arrogance too, which is always very amusing to me.

I’ve met people who readily conclude the reason why one is emphasizing the need for “resourcefulness” is because you lack money – and not necessarily that you wish to be efficient in your use of money.

What these people do not know is that many wealthy people pay serious attention to making efficient use of their money. They are diligently frugal. Indeed some got wealthy by BEING that way!

That’s why they have wealth that makes them financially independent, such that if they stopped working they could continue living the same lifestyle without worrying about running out of money.

Some people have this mixed up. I’ve heard them say: “But Oga you’re bigger than N100 now. Why don’t you just forget it? No need to insist on collecting that little change.”

So if you insist on having your change, they call you a miser or say that you don’t have money.

I made peace with myself regarding this issue a long time ago, after I read this anecdote about John D. Rockefeller:

One day he made a phone call from a public pay phone after putting several dollar coins into the machine. When he was done, the time he spent indicated the machine was supposed to dispense a one dollar coin ads change, but this did not happen. After trying without success to get the machine to behave, this wealthy man decided to call the operator to file a complaint. But when the operator asked for his name in order to make the entry, it occurred to him that being a millionaire, making this formal complaint about a mere one dollar change would raise many eyebrows and make news he did not need. For that reason, he told her he’d changed his mind and hung up.

The moral of the above story is that if a millionaire of Rockefeller’s stature could be that concerned about keeping the small change, the rest of us have no excuse to be careless in handling such denominations.

So, one way to be resourceful is to spend prudently, in a manner that gets you maximum value for your money.

On the home front, what do you eat or drink? Must you always buy everything? Is it possible for you to make some of your own drinks for instance? What about the snacks you eat?

Example: In my home we make great tasting drinks from pineapple peels (based on a concept I developed in 2013, during my first year in Cotonou) along with various home baked products like cakes, cookies, chin-chin, African-style Pizza, bread etc. On each child’s birthday, the others join hands to make food and drinks for the family celebration – including cakes topped with icing.

The drinks in particular cost next to nothing because the major raw material is pineapple peels obtained free from fruit sellers in the neighborhood. The kids love it, as does their grandmother who gets sent bottled units most times we make them.

Every now and then the kids still buy and eat commercial soft drinks, but most times this homemade drink of ours is what they make, and it saves us money even as it is healthy.

The same thinking can be successfully applied to whatever you do in your business.

For instance, how many things are you currently doing with money to promote your business?

One of the things I say all the time is that today, PC and Internet technology puts so much power in people’s hands, but the lack of resourcefulness of people keep holding them back from using it to excel!

Do you understand how to SAVE some of that money by using the web to promote your products/services to your desired target audience?

If you do, how well are you succeeding? What can you do differently to get even better results?

The answers to all those questions relate directly to your ability to be resourceful – not how  much money you have, or are willing to throw at your Internet Marketing efforts.

Indeed, zero cost web marketing is a reality that MANY people live everyday – people like ME. So what I’m saying here is not just wishful thinking. I LIVE this stuff – and my resourcefulness is what makes it possible for me, and similar others to do so.

By the way, just in case you’re one of those who think your kind of business cannot be marketed effectively using the web, let me assure you that NOTHING could be further from the truth.

Only you and your willingness to think creatively – or your willingness to be resourceful in making use of the web – can determine your success, or otherwise!

It does not matter if you sell caskets or (what Yoruba’s in Nigeria call) “Ponmo” (i.e. cooked animal hide/skin) – the web is there for you to use to succeed. It is malleable – you can mould it to suit your unique business marketing needs.

Regardless of what kind of business you run or what part of the planet you are operating from. As long as Internet connectivity is accessible, your use of web marketing is bound to benefit your brand greatly.

The key is to KNOW HOW to use it to get the results you need. And that’s where being RESOURCEFUL becomes necessary.

That is the factor that separates those who get useful lasting results from those who don’t. It’s why people with less money, individuals sometimes, achieve superior marketing success for their brands compared to wealthier others – including organizations.

Final Words: A Lack of Ideas Can Hold You Back – A Lack of Money Cannot

Click here to read an article about a special kind of very low cost, but delicious chocolate cake recipe created during the period of economic depression (and called “Depression Cake”).

I came across it last week and the story about how a lack of money drove people living in those times to think up new creative ways to make foods they loved without needing to spend money like they used to, really resonated with me.

The same situation led to the creation of the Depression Sandwich.

In Nigeria, the secessionist Biafrans invented the use of a perennial evergreen weed as a replacement protein ingredient in livestock feed formulation, to survive the potentially crippling effect of the Nigerian government’s embargo. In other words, they had to be resourceful to find a solution to the problem they were faced with.

All of this is proof that the key to succeeding is not having money. Instead it’s about being creative, being resourceful, and being an ideas person!

This is the key to succeeding in any area of endeavor, under any economic situation, in any part of the world, in any culture you may have to operate under.

Once again I refer you to history. Read and you will find that some of the most creative ideas that make the world turn today, came through the efforts of some of the most financially deprived people , who had no financial means to pursue their goals with what privileged others would consider basic necessities.

So they had to learn to be resourceful in using what they had to get what they wanted, and to go where they needed to be!

If YOU want to achieve authentic success, for the long term, in spite of any form of adversity, be it economic recession, or depression, YOU WILL need to adopt a similar mindset!

When you’ve got RESOURCEFULNESS, it boosts your ability to attract what you lack (e.g money), or those who have it, and are willing to give it to you. Take it from me: I LIVE THIS STUFF!

PII 046: A Smart Buyer Recruitment System Prevents Potential Buyers From Keeping You Waiting

You cannot survive without sales. It’s the life blood of every business. That’s why marketing is an activity that must happen continually, and in an effective manner, no matter how well (or badly) your business is doing.

But making it happen in the way that yields the sales you need is not something everyone is clued up about. Most people do not have as good a grasp of the sales and marketing process, as they do of the technical aspects of their businesses.

If you want to make a success of winning buyers for your products/services, you will need to overcome this limitation – or team up/hire someone who knows how to do it e.g. a partner or a consultant/expert.

My decision to discuss this subject today was influenced by a comment (see below), I read on a page I follow – run by Christian Mickelsen.

Chris had posted an article in which he gave (what I know from hard won personal experience to be) sound advice on how to handle clients who say “Let me think about it”.

But the commenter had raised an observation about possible instances in which the approach Chris advocated may now be applicable – and he went ahead to give examples.

chris-commener-tip2help” />

I took my time to read through his comments and even though I saw his points, it was apparent to me that they would only be valid for a person who lacked a tried and tested system for generating sales leads or attracting Pre-Qualified Prospects.

So, I decided to post a response to his comment. But I soon noticed I was writing more than I initially planned to, Then it occurred to me that others might also find the ideas I was trying to share useful. So I converted it to this article.

Below is the core of the response I prepared for his above shown comment:

Hi Paul,

I see the point you’re trying to make. However, I think you’re missing something.

The strategy works best if you setup and diligently use a smart (and time/effort saving) system for generating sales leads/recruiting potential clients.

Such a system would typically “lead” prospects through a “subtle” pre-qualification “information and education” process that presents psychological hurdles to screen out those that are not yet “ready” to commit to working with you.

That way, most of those who get to the final point where they connect with you for an “Intro session” arrive ready to say YES, or with need for answers to a few last queries they have, after which they say it.

It goes without saying that Chris uses such a system – and the tip he’s given in this article is based on the presumption that the reader will have his/hers too.

I’ve used such a system for many years, and it’s enabled me get high profile clients who arrive as total strangers to make hefty commitments 100% in advance after half to one hour speaking with me for the first time.

A smart client recruitment system makes finding the right clients, who fit your target audience profile, an easy, stress-free and cost-effective process.

The challenge you seem to have is that you have yet to setup such a system for your business.

You need to make out time to do that. I believe Chris himself offers support for stuff like that. But you can also learn to do it yourself by reading articles by him – and others e.g. like me – get in touch and I’ll send you links to write-ups I’ve published on this theme.

Here’s a recent one based on a real life experience I had:

To Remove Time-Wasters from Your Sales Leads You Need A Web Marketing System

Good luck!

2. ‘Automate Your Farm Records Keeping For Profitable Farm Planning

In this article, I explain the importance of establishing and maintaining reliable farm records keeping systems as it is a crucial requirement for successful planning & profitable management of your farm business. As they say, if you do not record it you cannot measure it. And if you do not measure it, you cannot control it. Which is the same thing as saying you cannot plan for it. In essence, I am saying that keeping detailed and accurate farm records  is a crucial requirement for effective and profitable farm planning.

[Coming Tomorrow] You Need this Custom Spreadsheet App to Accurately Analyze Your Bank Statement

On the 31st day of this month (December 2016), it will be exactly 14 years since I quit my high paying job as Technical Training and Development Manager with Guinness Nigeria, to (among other goals), pursue my dream of developing custom automated spreadsheet software for a living.

I’ve since made MAJOR progress, establishing my own unique range of custom spreadsheet apps used by high profile clients within and outside Africa. So much so that today I earn passive income selling my apps remotely via the web, without needing to meet face to face with clients.

Each time a New Year approaches, I always work hard to hit the ground running with a new and different concept, product or soliution.

This time around what I’ve come up with happened really by accident. A problem I had making sense of the MS Excel based bank statement I downloaded from the online banking interface for one of my accounts.

Below: Screenshot of online banking interface, with download of MS Excel statement in progress.

webbasedstatement3

The data was in too basic a format for me to find the information I needed, and trend it to arrive at useful deductions.

Below: Screenshot of downloaded copy of January to December MS Excel based statement I generated from my online banking interface on 15th December 2016.

webbasedstatement4

Today I generated one covering 1st January 2012 till date, which I successfully used to test the new app I built. It worked superbly. Details, including screenshot of generated table and chart based summaries in tomorrow’s issue of my PII newsletter.

It was while I was crawling around in confusion in the downloaded spreadsheet version of my statement for 2016, that I remembered I possessed MS Excel-VB automation skills.

And that meant I could do something about the problem I had with the data I was looking at!

My desire to use the data for my planned purposes drove me to build an app to do what I want with the statement.

Then when I began using the finished app, it occurred to me that others who also use online banking interfaces to generate their bank statements would probably find this app useful.

So, I decided I would use it as my new “product” going into the new year.

Below is the description of the app, that I’ve put in its about window.

This Custom Automated Excel VB Driven Entreprise Information System(EIS) was built by Tayo K. Solagbade, for SDAc’s Creative Business Solutions(CB Solutions) arm, using MS Excel® Visual Basic. It allows even a PC novice quickly and effortlessly import bank statement data from an MS Excel based workbook downloaded from his/her bank’s Internet Banking platform. Using in-built cystom automation tools the user is then able to generate tabulated and charted reports.

Tomorrow, the Monday issue of my weekly Performance Improvement Ideas (PII) newsletter, will go out.

In it, I will provide detailed descriptions and screenshots, as well as a step-by-step video demonstration of how the app works.

Then I will end with an introductory promotional offer of the app. Members of my Excel Visual Basic Automation Club will get a heftier discount.

Stay tuned – in a few hours, the details will be LIVE.

During the same period I responded to a support request from a Benin City, Edo State – Nigeria based new Farm CEO client’s request for help with use of the Feed Formulation Handbook he’d purchased along with the software as part of what I call the Feed Formulation Bundle.

This second CEO was having difficulty understanding the thinking behind the adjustment calculations illustrated in the handbook

In particular, he was stumped by an example case study (screenshot below) in a section on DERIVING RATION FORMULAS using conventional protein and non-protein contributing feed ingredients.ffhb-case-study

The calculation method used is an improved version of the Pearson Square technique, which allows for more than one protein contributing ingredient to be used (unlike the original technique).

What follows below are notes I created from a transcript excerpt version of audio explanatory notes I emailed to him

This example illustrates the steps to follow in order to compensate for the dilution effect that occurs when non-protein contributing feed ingredients are added to a feed mixture.

To understand the dilution effect referred to:

Assume we need to formulate a ration to contain 24% protein for the target animal. Now, imagine the main protein and carbohydrate/energy contributors are Maize and Soybean – already milled and mixed.

But we also have to add some other ingredients that do not contribute any protein, for the food to be complete and be ready for baby. These other ingredients help to make the ration balanced for all the key nutrients required for the property development and functioning of the animal.

Examples of these other ingredients include items like limestone, salt, vitamin premixes, bone meal etc. Typically, most of these get classed as fixed factor components in a ration.

They generally don’t contribute any significant amounts of protein, but they will take up volume space in the ration that is meant for the target animal.

By implication, when added they will dilute the percentage of protein in the resultant ration. Which means the total protein content will drop below, as is the case for this example, the target of 24%. That will happen because that will not add any significant protein content to compensate for the volume they will displace in the mixture.

So in order to end up with the final 24 percent protein content in the ration, we must start with protein content from the protein contributing ingredients, that is above 24%. That way, by the time the non-protein contributing ingredients are added, their dilution effect will not go below 24%.

This needs to be done, if the target animal is to get a ration that has a minimum of 24% protein content.

The feed formulation handbook explains, using a diagrammatic method, the procedure for carrying out that adjustment calculation.

In animal nutrition, it is important to establish the nutrient requirements of the target animal for which a ration is to be formulated.

For instance day old layer chicks have a certain requirement for protein, energy, fibre content in their diets. In the same way adult layers also have specific nutrient requirements which are very different from what they chicks have.

So in the handbook you will see that there is a set of pages devoted to that e.g. nutrient requirements of different classes of poultry including broilers, growers, and chicks. And the nutrient requirements for each group generally differ – in terms of their content requirements of energy, protein, fibre etc.

So there is a variation depending on the class of animal, and even the conditions under which the animals are kept.

For instance, with animals kept in cages, you don’t want to give them rations that are too high in energy content.

Why?

Because they could begin to deposit fat causing potential performance problems. And that would happen because they would not have the means to burn it off, since they would be restricted from running around to exercise.

If they are layers and start depositing fat, they could develop fatty deposits in their rear ends, making it difficult for them to expel the eggs – thus affecting their laying performance.

You will need to read up on all of this and make sure you get a sound understanding of it. The handbook gives you a good foundation to get started.

THE FARM CEO (Issue 67): A BOPMS™ Will Enable You Run Your Farm Business Profitably Even When You’re Away!, To Succeed, Your Farm Does Not Just Need a Software – It Needs a BOPMS!, Your Business Should Free You, Not Restrict You

Over the past 2 weeks I have made more sales of my Excel-VB Ration Formulator, Feed Formulation Handbook and Excel-VB Poultry Farm Manager, to Farm CEOs  – 2 within Nigeria and one outside (specifically Uganda via Western Union).

Aside from those who have made purchases I have had some call me to make enquiries. For all of them, I ALWAYS did the same thing – which was to challenge them to adopt a best practice mindset in running their farm operations.

Like I always tell them, I have a vision to help Farm CEOs engage best practice strategies to boost their farm output at less cost, using less effort and fewer resources, so they can retain more profits.

In line with that vision, I send them links to articles I’ve written on this best practice theme, as no-strings-attached gifts, regardless of whether they buy from me or not.

In this no-password issue of the Farm CEO newspaper, I offer previews of, and links to 3 of such articles, for your consideration. I hope you find them useful.

1. PII 020: A BOPMS™ Will Enable You Run Your Farm Business Profitably Even When You’re Away!

There is a saying that if you cannot be away from your business for fear of things not going right, that’s not a business – it’s a job.

Now, it is my considered opinion that if there is any kind of business that the owner needs to be able to get time away from, without fear of things going seriously wrong, it’s the farm business.

Why?

Because starting and running a farm business is a very demanding process, that requires investment of money, time, effort and resources by the owners and members of his/her team.

PII 020: A BOPMS™ Will Enable You Run Your Farm Business Profitably Even When You’re Away!

2. PII 015: To Succeed, Your Farm Does Not Just Need a Software – It Needs a BOPMS!

Below is a message I received from a Farm CEO few days ago, asking for a software solution:

“…I’m currently running a piggery business with no record keeping. At best, very poor and would love you developing a software that can help in terms of reporting, analysing and profitability including growth, effectiveness and efficiency.

I also have several colleagues needing same and it would be my pleasure leading them to you based on your productsdelivering my needs.

Let us explore this further please.”

I’ve been getting requests like these more frequently in the recent past, indicating that more Farm CEOs are keen to adopt best practice management of their farm businesses.

3. Your Business Should Free You, Not Restrict You

If you own a business – with employees – that won’t make money/do well unless you’re there, what you have is NOT a business, but a job! This article offers guidance to help you get maximum value from your business – even when you’re not physically present. Indeed if you do it right, you’ll develop a system that actually lets you stay away from your business, and return to find it doing just as well as (if not better than) you left it.

As an extension professional, my aim is to provide farm business owners with useful information and education, to guide them in daily running of their farms. Especially in the routine planning and decision making they have to do. In certain cases, I develop resources to enhance their ability to do what they do better.

Your Business Should Free You, Not Restrict You

THE FARM CEO (Issue 66): Ideas for Exploring Low Cost Feed Ingredients, When You Have No Laboratory On Your Farm, Understanding How Ruminant Livestock (Like Cattle) Digest High Fibre Feeds, Understanding Feed Ingredients Used For Poultry Feed Formulation

This week’s issue of the Farm CEO features 3 articles from my Cost-Saving Farm Business Ideas articles archives, on understanding feed formulation and exploring use of low cost alternative feed ingredients.

1. Ideas for Exploring Low Cost Feed Ingredients, When You Have No Laboratory On Your Farm

In this article, I narrate 2 real-life “Success Stories” – that illustrate how resourcefulness, creative thinking, a little persistence, and a willingness to adapt, can help anyone succeed with an unconventional idea, even under difficult circumstances. I end by offering suggestions (based on the success stories), that you can follow to successfully explore using low cost feed ingredients for making rations you feed your livestock, in order to record substantial savings.

2. Understanding How Ruminant Livestock (Like Cattle) Digest High Fibre Feeds

Many of us know (or have heard) about the ability of a group of animals called Ruminants to digest cellulose which we, and other non-ruminants, would be unable to utilise in our own nutritional systems. This article provides a brief insight into the features possessed by ruminants, and the complex processes that occur within their bodies, to enable them perform that unusual feat, seemingly without making any noticeable effort.

3.Understanding Feed Ingredients Used For Poultry Feed Formulation

Feeding is one critical element that determines how well poultry or any other farm animals perform. It impacts not only on growth rates, but also on the disease resistance of the birds(though protection is also afforded the birds through vaccination/medication regimes). To put it another way, it has been acknowledged that ‘Diet is an important component of the environment under all climatic conditions. The potential of the bird cannot be attained if the environment, and notably the diet, is substandard.
