Most people in the UK do not go to university – and maybe never will

Data suggests that the majority of the UK population will never go to university, finds Charlie Ball.

Almost everyone goes to university nowadays, everyone knows that.

Except that not everyone does and we rarely see accurate statistics about how many or what proportion of people actually do. It’s quite an important question, bound up with thorny issues of workforce skills, educational aspiration and, of course, how (and how much) the UK taxpayer funds our domestic higher education sector.

[FREE AUDIO PODCAST] True Stories About “Mind Games Playing” in Business – Including Tips About How to Protect Yourself Against Those Who Play Them! – by Tayo K. Solagbade, www.tayosolagbade.com

Mind games playing is more or less a way of life for MANY Nigerians – whether those living in the country or based abroad.

I say this based on YEARS of personal experiences and observations from interacting with people in Nigeria (often quite closely/for extended periods) in my business and personal life.

[TIP: You have a right to disagree with the assertion I’ve made above – feel free to jump up and down, and even tear your hair out. But if you wish to engage me in dicussion about the views I’ve expressed here, be sure to observe ALL the rules of polite and intelligent conversation. Thanks in advance :-)]

I’m NOT alone. There are others willing to say it like it is.

In particular, I’ve come across more than one non-Nigerian who has noticed this negative tendency while living/working with Nigerians.

For instance, an American expatriate who spent some years doing business in Nigeria, connected with me on Skype in 2012, after we’d met on LinkedIn. com and got talking about doing business in Nigeria.

What I liked about Greg M. (his real first name and initial for his surname) was that he was willing to NOT be Politically Correct or needlessly diplomatic.

He wasted no time in stating that one of the greatest frustrations he experienced (apart from erratic power supply) while still in Nigeria, as a business person was the preference most people he had to relate with, displayed for mind games of all kinds.

I could relate quite well with what he said, and I told him so. Today, very little has changed in that regard. Indeed, it’s that peculiar tendency that led to the pre-qualification steps I put in place in my sales leads generation process (which is now 100% online based) to screen people who reach out to me, so I can be sure they are NOT time wasters…or worse.

Click the link below this post to download my 1 hour Audio Podcast titled “True Stories About Mind Games Playing in Business”.

I bring my experience based knowledge and insights to bear in informing and educating relevant others, about the antics of naughty people in society, who play mind games with the intent to manipulate, deceive and exploit unsuspecting others.

These emotionally UN-intelligent individuals CAN (and WILL, if you let them!) use their mind games to (among other things):

  1. Make you work for them for LESS or NO pay…
  2. Get you to share your new/original ideas, so they can later pass them off as theirs to others (e.g plagiarism)…
  3. Establish a relationship with you, that they then exploit to make false claims to reap benefits they seek elsewhere (e.g a client that listed my name as an EMPLOYEE-in their business plan presentation for a bank loan without my knowledge or consent!).

These are people who live their lives manipulating others. And they need to be discouraged” – Tayo K. Solagbade

Like I stated in the audio, my ultimate purpose for sharing this post and podcast bundle is to provide a public service of sorts.

ALL the stories I’ve shared are 100% true (despite the shocking nature of some), and they happened to me, personally. So this is NOT based on hearsay.

“…For those who are engaged in the habits I describe in this audio, the truth is that you’re NOT going to like what you’re going to hear now…but the truth needs to be said…”

“…I have this example I’m going to give you. Somebody calls up your phone line. That’s why I don’t do call backs (except it’s a number/caller I know). In developed societies when you see a missed call, there’s a rule. Generally you do a call back. If you’re really a smart business person you want to do a call back – because people don’t go around making…well do they have people who are crank callers, but when you’re in business, people don’t make a habit of, for example thing we call ‘flashing’.

It’s only in Nigeria we have flashing. The mobile phone came into Nigeria then people instantly developed a negative use for it. Somebody doesn’t have airtime to call you, and you want that person to pay you for product? He’s not willing to buy N100 airtime to call you and he flashes YOU, so that YOU can call HIM, and you think that person can do business with you?

That person is NOT qualified to do business with me. The mentality is already wrong.

Look, the things I sell are not cheap. But they are not expensive either. So, if somebody wants to buy something from me and cannot call me…There’s a missed call? So? Call me back! Call again!!

Let me see the effort before I begin to think I need to do a call back – because in Nigeria what happens is somebody who has absolutely no interest in buying anything from you just sees your profile on the web and says “Hmmm…look at this guy, na wao O. Let me just talk to him and even find out….bla bla bla…”

So he begins to tell you send me this, send me that (information etc), and you’ll think you’re talking to a human being – you won’t know you’re talking to some idiot who just wants to play with you. They do that a lot. There are people who don’t have better things to do with their time, than to just sit around and try to exert power over you.

They can make you jump through hoops because they think you are so (in need)…there is a mentality in Nigeria where people who are in business think they are supposed to jump through hoops to get business. (They think) that’s how to show that they are interested in getting business….

“…I have this series I wrote (see related articles below) some time ago. I think 2005, 2004, on a theme I titled “Entrepreneur Abuse’.  It was based on certain very nasty experiences I’d had (at the hands of clients/prospects) which I discovered were very commonly occurring in Nigeria, but which a lot of people in this part of the world just rationalize and assume saying ‘We don’t have a choice…we have to accept it”…

…(I say) You don’t have to accept it! I always tell people…even when I was crawling, when my brand was zero, when nobody knew me. When I did not have the kind of online presence that I have today, that enables me to get people to earn income from people who don’t see me in the flesh, I always told people:  YOU have a choice!”

[RECOMMENDED] The rise of self-education and individual investment

The message contained in the article previewed/linked below, WILL resonate strongly with ANY person who has reflected deeply on the inadequacies of our conventional education systems – in meeting rapidly changing, technology driven educational needs of today’s “learners”.

If the society refuses to make the required changes to education that can be had, I argue that every INDIVIDUAL can – and should! – make the changes necessary for him/herself…and EVERY parent should do same for his/her kids!

The rise of self-education and individual investment

With university tuition costs rising and a programming skill shortage, should students consider investing their time to help bridge the skill set gap?

Formal education certainly does not come cheap — with student fees rising and fewer university places available, but less traditional methods and a sharper focus on skill sets rather than formal qualifications could benefit job hunters more than a degree and a point score on their resume.

[2016 TEDx VIDEO] To Truly Succeed, Black Women Need to Wear Their Natural Hair! -Verbatim Text Transcript of presentation by Cheyenne Cochrane, an Ambassador for the Natural Hair Movement

In a time of racial and social tension, embracing this movement, and others like this, help us to rise above the confines of the status quo. So when you see a woman with braids or locks, draping down her back, or you notice your colleague who has stopped straightening her hair to work, do not simply approach her and admire and ask her if you can touch it. Really appreciate her! Applaud her. Heck you can high-five her if that’s what you feel so inclined to do. Because this…this is more than about a hair style. It’s about self-love and self-worth. It’s about being brave enough, not to fold under the pressure of others expectations. And about know that making the decision to stray from the norm, does not define who we are, but it simply reveals who we are. And finally, being brave is easier, when we can count on the compassion of others. So, after today, I certainly hope that we can count on YOU. Thank you.” – Cheyenne Cochrane, an ambassador for the natural hair movement.

Know What Your Kids Do On Social Media to Avoid Nasty Surprises

It’s 8:35 p.m as I type this. Do you know where your kids are right now – tonight? Do you know where they’ve been today i.e. since the day began in the morning?

More importantly: Do you know what exactly they’ve been DOING and SAYING?

There are parents who cannot confidently answer the above questions for a variety of reasons.

What I’m saying here applies in particular to people with kids in the critical TEENAGE years.

With my kids at the Ikeja Computer Village in Nigeria's Lagos

No other period in a person’s life is more complex and confusing than the teenage years. I know this from my experiences getting in trouble between the ages of 10 and 16.

This is why I pay so much attention to my own kids – especially the 3 who are already in their teens.

Nothing has a greater influence on kids in general than social pressure from PEERS they relate with.

3 decades ago, when I was in my teens, we did not have social media. So meeting and making friends with/keeping in touch with others was NOTHING like what we have today.

Back then you had to make physical contact with others to get influenced by them. And I got into loads of trouble by doing just that.

Today, the situation is different. Smartphones and PC/Internet technology have transformed the way we socialize.

And their method is much more rapid and potentially impactful than the old fashioned way.

Platforms like Facebook and Twitter, as well as similar others are famous for connecting people across various locations and cultures. As a result, we’re having so much exchange of ideas and trends between societies happening almost at the speed of thought.

Our kids in their teens often already own smart phones that are web connected, and are therefore exposed to these powerful influences. Facebook in particular is so well suited for social interaction.

Before you know it, your child, through remote interaction with some other kids, can pick up and begin to exhibit behavioral habits and traits that are potentially embarrassing and implicating.

A good example of how this can happen is in the use of language. Kids can be easily influenced to use improper words, phrases and expressions – when interacting with peers,

Since the human face does NOT have a meter to indicate if/when a person has used bad language in public or private, chances are good that a parent that’s NOT actively monitoring them may never discover his/her kids are doing that!

This is why I strongly recommend that parents make out time to review their kids activities in use of mobile phones as well as PC and Internet technology. Every now and then,  make a point of reviewing their chat sessions, message archives, wall updates, and discussion threads.

Done right, this will not only help you keep a useful eye on them, but it will also make them exercise caution in the way they interact with others via those platforms, as well as when they meet others face to face.

In other words, your demonstrated interest in checking up on them will caution them against losing control and going beyond the limits you’ve defined for them,

And if/when you find they are having inappropriate communications with others, do not hesitate to make it clear that you will NOT tolerate it.

Here’s an example of a message I once had to send to a friend of my kids who used particularly bad language on one of their walls:

“Hi (Name) I DO NOT approve of my children using vulgar language in public or private. If you want to remain connected to my kids, on ANY platforms, I strongly advise you NEVER again to post dirty language like “(the offending expression inserted here)” on ANY of their walls again. You are free to do that elsewhere, but understand that I do NOT approve of them communicating in that manner with anyone. They have both been warned about this instance with you. And I have chosen to let it pass. I suggest you find ways to express yourself in interacting with my kids that does NOT require use of gutter language. Indeed, I believe YOU should aspire to do better than use such phrases in expressing yourself out here. Next time it happens, I will get them to unfriend you.”

It could be argued that the above line of action is not guaranteed to achieve the corrective purpose intended – and that is true.

However, compared to the alternative of NOT sending any feedback to the culprit and my kids, I’d rather do it, and then read my kids the riot act to drive the point home (which is what I did).

I cannot speak for others, but I know, from the kind of upbringing I’ve been giving my own kids, that the message really sank home, with them, and they are likely to discourage any other friends from doing the same thing in future. Plus they will certainly NOT be responding in a welcoming manner to any who do!

For that reason, I’m reasonably sure that the chances of my having the unpleasant surprise or shock of seeing vulgar language (or other embarrassing activities) by my kids appearing in my Facebook feed will be reduced.

What many people forget is that persons you are connected to on social media can make you look good or bad, in an instant, through what they share on THEIR own walls, which appears in your own feed e.g. obscene photos, ugly language etc

If your kids are connected as friends on Facebook with you, their status updates and related conversations will appear on your wall by default. Even if you use privacy settings to control what appears on your wall, they still bear your name and in their profile details will be identified as “yours”!

Therefore, unless you’ve given them the kind of coaching recommended in this piece, THEY could cause you to look not-too-good to friends, colleagues, business associates and even clients who may choose to review your Facebook profile, if they engage in indiscriminate acts.

And that’s why I say it pays to Know What Your Kids Do On Social Media to Avoid Nasty Surprises!

[RECOMMENDED] Why You Should Encourage Kids to be Rule Breakers – by Robert Kiyosaki

[TIP: If you truly LOVE your child, and want him/her to make it in life – especially FINANCIALLY – you WILL stop and read THIS…right to the end]

Once again I find myself MOVED to share another powerfully insightful best practice parenting ideas article from Robert Kiysaki’s Rich Dad blog.

The following excerpt is just one of many parts of this piece that resonates so much with me:

“So, there are two problems. Our kids want to create jobs, which is a vital need for our country, and instead of teaching our kids how to create jobs, our schools teach them how to get jobs.

In the process, they build into them an employee mindset, which is one that is inclined to follow the rules instead of break them. This breaks their spirit, and it squashes their entrepreneurial dreams.” – Robert Kiyosaki, in “Why You Should Encourage Kids to be Rule Breakers” [Read the full article by clicking the link or image below]

It just amazes me how despite all the practical real world relevant, and life changing sense this many has continued to make with his writing, MANY MANY parents in this part of the world, who cannot claim NOT to have encountered his work, continue to put their kids, blindly through conventional schooling, with all it’s harmful aspects INTACT!!!

Suffice to say that MY kids will continue to spared THAT kind of damage…and you can be sure they ARE being TAUGHT to be unapologetic rule breakers…like I AM :-)

We Badly Need An Unconventional More Real World Relevant Education System [Hint: The Key to Eliminating Youth Unemployment]

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.” – Rob Siltanen

=

In my best practice parenting articles at (www.tayosolagbade.com/sdnuggets) over the past decade, I’ve advocated a total and radical overhaul of the conventional Education System the children, especially in my part of the world (in Nigeria/Africa) are exposed to.

Understandably, not many parents and educators are happy with the ideas I propose.

But that does not matter.

This is a change that can cause youth unemployment to be drastically reduced – and we all want THAT!

I know their “majority” disagreement does not matter because I’ve been down the road of believing “alone” in an unpolpular but viable idea before – and have been proved right many times!

Indeed, reactions in some quarters, to my contrarian Ideas as a Best Practice Parenting Advocate, remind me of how my now widely accepted idea of selling custom Excel-VB Solutions (see (www.excelheaven.biz) got me roundly mocked, ridiculed and criticised everywhere I offered them less than a decade ago!

And that’s why I rarely bother about those who disagree with me on ideas my experiences already convince me about.

The quote I began with – above – captures my sentiments perfectly in this regard.

Rob Siltanen’s quoted words resonate with me in terms of the success I enjoy today selling “ordinary” Excel files and my writing skills internationally, 100% via the web – despite being told “Who’s going to pay you to do that here? This is NOT America” when I started out over 10 years ago!

I chose to think and act different from what I saw others doing. Irefused to let the crowd force me to change. Today people relate with/buy from me as if what I do and how I do it is normal and common place.

But in reality, even now, I remain more the exception than the norm!

This is why I remain resolute in my conviction about the need to give my kids real world relevant education that empowers them to be financially independent much earlier in life.

I’ve evolved a model that contradicts conventional wisdom about educating young people.

It is based on eye opening and often painful experiences I’ve had in my adult life, AFTER undergolng conventional education in my society and excelling at it – only to discover it was far from adequate to prepare me for success in tje real world of my society!

The modified approach I advocate, puts Income Earning Vocational Skills Based Training at the foundation of every child’s exposure to formal education. My kids are being taken through this system already and the positive and lasting benefits are apparent despite inevitable teething problems.

I predict that a few years from now, parents and their kids WILL be asking me and miy kids for ideas about how to achieve the results we will be putting on record. Mark my words!

[RECOMMENDED] Lagos Opens Website To Register Undergraduates For Internship Scheme

I continue to shake my head at the irony of the situation in which supposed graduates from Nigerian institutions keep “NEEDING” brushing up and polishing to make them more “employable” AFTER they exit tertiary institutions they spent YEARS preparing in!

My argument remains that MANY of our kids are being made to pass through these institutions learning courses in fields they are VERY unlikely to easily find jobs in, or qualify for by way of employability.

It is my considered opinion that we NEED to get real and guide our kids to acquire real world relevant education based on their identified geniuses/talents.

That way, ALL this wasteful spending of money on pseudo-tertiary-education, that ends up needing the graduates to the “retrained”(!) to be able to ADD value to the real world, would not be necessary!!!

The news report previewed/linked below is heartwarming to the extent that it announces efforts by the Lagos State government to go beyond just giving jobs and training to graduates.

I say this especially because of the extra steps being taken  – as highlighted below – to develop a sustainable model that is built into the existing schooling system.

In a forthcoming article, I will publish transcript excerpts I’ve typed out from a video in which the Vocational Skills based education system of a European country with the highest Youth unemployment rate in the world, is compared with the College tuition based education system of a North American nation whose youth unemployment rates keep climbing.

The differences between results being obtained in both economies are stunning in their implications – and offer the rest of us valuable lessons on changes we need to make!

This is happening via what Lagos State Government calls the:

“Ready.Set.Work (RSW) scheme which is an entrepreneurship and employability initiative designed to equip final year students of tertiary institutions in the State with the right skills to add value to the society.”

Lagos is choosing to go a step further to (quote):

“…integrate the RSW into the education curriculum of the State, and also expand the modules as well as the benefiting institutions.”

Lagos Opens Website To Register Undergraduates For Internship Scheme

The Lagos State Government on Thursday announced the opening of its website to register intending applicants for the 2017 edition of Ready.Set.Work (RSW) scheme which is an entrepreneurship and employability initiative designed to equip final year students of tertiary institutions in the State with the right skills to add value to the society.

Special Adviser to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode on Education, Mr Obafela Bank-Olemoh, who disclosed this at a news conference in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, said interested applicants would be able to access the website – www.readysetwork.com.ng from June 16, while the training would run from July 1 to September 16, 2017.
