[DVAM] Top 10 Things Women Do To Destroy Their Marriage

In the article previewed/linked below (based on my Facebook page’s theme of Domestic Violence Against Men – DVAM), Deborah Demander of pairedlife dot com shares 10 powerful insights about how (some) women inadvertently destroy their marriages with their own hands.

Top 10 Things Women Do To Destroy Their Marriage

Wives bear as much responsibility as husbands. We have the power to make a home, or break it.

How we hurt our husbands

Creating a hostile environment can make everyone uncomfortable and destroy your marriage.

While both husband and wife should take responsibility for their part in a marriage, below are ten mistakes common to women, which can completely destroy a marriage. When women exercise the following behaviors, it can create a hostile environment, where no one feels safe or comfortable.

When things are not going well it can be hard to stay positive and motivated.

No one wants to experience delays, disappointments, setbacks or failure in any form, for any length of time.

But the reality of life is that we WILL sometimes have to face them to grow, and mature to our fullest potentials.

Whether we get there (i.e. to success/full potential) will however depend on how we respond to those negative experiences we have!

In this issue (4th June 2018) of my Performance Improvement Ideas (PII) newsletter, I feature verbatim transcript excerpts from a scene in the iconic Sylvester Stallone’s blockbuster movie “Rocky”.

In it, struggling Pro Boxer “Rocky” (Sylvester Stallone) shares powerful insights about WINNING in spite of adversity in life, with his young son, in response to the latter’s stinging criticism about his (Rocky’s) lack of success achievement.

R0cky tells him why it is important to keep MOVING FORWARD no matter how hard life hits you, and why blaming others for the knocks you get from life should NEVER be something you do, except you want to be a coward – and in the long run, a failure!

I strongly recommend that every parent read this transcript and watch the video, then use what you learn to challenge yourself to live a better life.

But don’t stop there: Also use what you learn, to COACH YOUR kids, in preparation for life when they arrive adulthood. Believe me, they WILL need it!

Here’s why I think you need to let your kids STUDY the video and this transcript with you:

You see, during hard times, your ability to provide for your loved ones, may become a bit limited and this could lead them to begin DOUBTING you. Depending on how bad things get, your circumstances could make people outside your home talk about you, to the hearing of such loved ones who you provide for, causing them to feel embarrassed. Knowing the truths stated in this video clip can help YOU deal with this phase of your life and also help them keep believing in you – and even in themselves!

Son (walking alongside Rocky): So you nervous about the fight?

Rocky: Scared to death

Son: You don’t look scared

Rocky: Well you ain’t supposed to

Son: Then you don’t have to do it

Rocky: Yeah, well I think I do

Son (stops walking, so Rocky turns around): You know living with you, it hasn’t been easy. People see me, but they think of you, Now with all this going on, it’s going to be worse than ever.

Rocky: It don’t have to be

Son: Oh, sure it does

Rocky: Why? You got a lot going on, kid

Son: What? My last name? That’s the reason I got a decent job. That’s the reason why people deal with me in the first place. Now I start to get a little ahead. I start to get a little something for myself and this happens. Now I’m asking you as a favour, not to go through with this okay. This is only gonna end up bad for you and it’s gonna end up bad for me.

Rocky: You think I’m hurting you?

Son: Yeah – in a way you are

Rocky: That’s the last thing I ever wanted to do.

Son: I know that’s not what you wanna do, but that’s just the way that it is. Don’t you care what people think?

Doesn’t it bother you that people are making you out to be a joke, and I’m gonna be included in that?

Do you think that’s right?

Do you?

Rocky: You ain’t gonna believe this, but you used to fit right here [points to palm of his right hand]

I’d hold you up and say to your mother “This kid’s gonna be the best kid in the world. This kid’s gonna be somebody better than anybody ever knew.

And you grew up good and wonderful. It was great just watching. Every day was like a privilege.

Then the time come for you to take on the world and be your own man, and you did.

But somewhere along the line, you changed. You stopped being you.

You let people stick a finger in your face and tell you you’re no good.

And when things got hard, you started looking for something to blame. Like a big shadow.

Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows.

It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it.

You, me or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving’ forward.

How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!

Now if you know what you’re worth, then go out and get what you’re worth. But you gotta be willing to take hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you wanna be because of him or her or anybody!

Cowards do that, and that ain’t you!

You’re better than that!

[PAUSE[

I’m always gonna love you no matter what.

No matter what happens. You’re my son and you’re my blood.

You’re the best thing in my life.

But until you start believing in yourself, you ain’t gonna have a life.

Many people who encounter hard times sometimes wonder why things have to be so difficult. Some get to a point where they even question “God”.

Others decide they cannot take it anymore and settle for cutting corners to make ends meet.

Now, cutting corners to succeed is NEVER right and ultimately hurts more than it helps, in most cases.

But at least those who do it are ACCEPTING responsibility for where they are, and taking ACTION to go where they want to be!

This is more than can be said for those who choose to blame others for hardships they encounter.

They go through those experiences without making effort to LEARN and IMPROVE themselves so as to make PROGRESS towards a better life.

As a result, their circumstances worsen – and they complain, and point fingers at others to blame even more, thereby remaining in that sad cycle of repeated failures!

You do NOT want THAT to be YOUR story.

I recommend you take Rocky’s admonition to heart and begin to think and act accordingly, from today onwards.

Sooner than later, the success you seek, will be come your reality.

Good luck!

[MUST READ] Sexual predators as academics in Nigeria

So, these are the universities the state expects parents to CONTINUE sending their wards/kids to? Read this damning report published by BusinessDay newspaper, which features excerpts from a pilot ICPC/NUC University System Study and Review (USSR) of corruption.

Sexual predators as academics in Nigeria

Last week, a voice recording allegedly suggesting that a professor of Management and Accounting at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Richard Akindele, was demanding sex in return for grade rocked the social as well as mainstream media. The academic who is also a reverend gentleman, was overhead in the tape demanding five rounds or five days of sex from the hapless lady, a final year student who failed his course, to upgrade her marks to a pass.

In 2012, a pilot ICPC/NUC University System Study and Review (USSR) of corruption in the university system was undertaken and the review identified a series of infractions including admissions racketeering, misapplication and embezzlement of funds, sale of examination questions, inducement to manipulate awards of degrees, direct cheating during examinations, deliberate delays in the release of results, victimization of students by officials, lack of commitment to work by lecturers, and above all, sexual harassment and exploitation of students by lecturers. At the presentation of the report in 2012, the ICPC Chairman, Mr Ekpo Nta, was quoted as saying: “we have uncovered many corrupt practices in our universities. Sexual harassment seems to rank extremely very high among corrupt practices in our universities. Our report is based on the quantum of petitions we have received on this corrupt practice. We’re emphasizing this because sexual harassment has to do with the immediate challenge we need to address.”

Following several face to face meetings as well as phone and email exchanges over the past few weeks, the CEO of BHF Foundation – a Lagos based NGO engaged in vocational skills training across learning institutions (up to tertiary level) in Nigeria has formally sent in an invitation letter (see below)  indicating his desire to have my Pineapple PEELS drinks making training for an estimated number of housewives, undergraduates and youths.

bhf-letter-blur

His NGO is organizing an approved 3 day youth conference outside Lagos. Our training comes up on the final day (Sat. 14th Apr 2018).

There will also be a Shoe and Bag Making Training by another expert whose work I’ve seen.  Venue is a town in Ogun state. Full details with photos WILL come after the event.

The CEO learnt of my one day workshop on drinks making using Pineapple Peels, from a partner of www.discovercotonou.com (my new travel product/service website brand) and got interested.

I have since told the CEO, who is also a Pastor, that my 2 daughters (aged 12 and 9 years old) will be the lead –facilitators on that day. as they have been doing it for YEARS (I will mainly provide support as they progress). The purpose of running the event in this manner is:

  1. To challenge the adults who will be attending the event to BELIEVE they can do it, when they see my girls doing it.
  2. To give the girls an opportunity to develop their sales/marketing presentation skills as part of the Vocational Skills training based education they’ve been undergoing. You can see photos of home based baking of bread, pizza, cake, chin-chin etc that they do at home using their trademark charcoal stove and pot on their Facebook page at facebook.com/TemiandOluomasCharcoalStoveBaking/

INVITE US TO  CONDUCT ANY OF OUR HOME BASED DRINKS AND FOODS MAKING TRAINING SESSIONS

My girls make their drinks and bake their confectionaries using their charcoal stove technique  – we use that approach to PROVE that lack of capital cannot stop YOU from getting started. However, they also KNOW how to do it all, using gas cookers.

Apart from inviting us to conduct our on demand training for your group, public spirited individuals//organizations can SPONSOR the event, for groups of people we (and/or my partners) may bring together.

About Temi & Olouma…

‘Temi (12) & Oluoma (9) are sisters who (with support from their family) use creative low cost recipes & a charcoal stove pot to bake cookies, cakes, bread, chin-chin, Pizza etc for sale.

This micro business venture began as a “skills acquisition project” Temi asked their Dad to let her do, after seeing videos of homemade cookies baking. The girls learnt to make the cookies by watching YouTube videos by hobbyists/experts in the USA and Nigeria.

skul-paper-dep-gov-letter-thb

Last Friday (23rd March 2018), like I hinted I would, in the blog I posted about the invitation I got to the Ministry of Youth and Social Development, I submitted a follow up letter on the theme of my 62 page paper (Schooling is a means to an End and NOT an End in Itself) to the Deputy Governor.

In that letter, I put forward my thinking about how the Ministry of Education (MOE)and Ministry of Youth and Social Development (MYSD) can collaborate to better equip learning institutions to deliver EDUCATION that empowers learners to enter society with reliable competence to fend for themselves.

Like I did in writing to the MYSD, I included a full printed copy of my 62 page paper as a reference.

Having said/done the above, the truth is that I really do not care if I hear back from them or not, at this point.

What matters to me is that I have gone beyond grumbling about how things are not right with our schooling system, to OFFERING my own ideas for consideration, even as I put them to use for my kids.

It’s worthwhile to note also that more and more people continue to reach out to me, requesting their FREE copies of the PDF version. So, for me, progress is happening. It’s up to the policy makers to do what they will with what I’ve sent them.

If you need the paper, click here to fill and submit a form request.

“To be well adjusted to a sick society is no sign of good health” – Jiddu Krishnamurti

The annoyances in Nigeria (like the broken & corrupted schooling system) never stop bothering me.

I find it hard to accept them as normal and inevitable. Some people have told me it’s best to get used to them since they are not likely to change.

I think THAT is not a healthy way to live life. But that’s me. I believe I CAN change my reality. And that’s why the annoyances of Nigeria’s schooling systems drive me to find a solution I can share.

The ideas I advocate for adoption in this report are borne out of YEARS of painful struggling and suffering trying to find my true purpose in life, since I left the university, and especially since I quit my high paying job in a large multinational manufacturer, to pursue my long standing dream of running my own business.

I was NOT happy doing my salaried job, despite the good pay. I longed to do something that allowed me the freedom to explore my creativity, and maximize the potential I knew I had.

The need to do this became more apparent to me, and more urgent, when, one day, in my office as Technical Training and Development Manager, an old, retired ex-employee of the company, who we as young graduate trainees had heard retired after over 2 decades of service, BEFORE we joined, came asking, PLEADING actually, that I award him a training contract.

Among other things, in response to my explanation that my
expatriate boos and I were committed to only engaging accredited trainers, and only in response to REAL training needs among our staff, he pointed out the fact that he had done my job during his time in the company. I was aware of this and told him so. But I made it clear I could not help him.

After he left, I told myself I did NOT want to leave the company at retirement age, of say 65, when I would have lost my youth and most of my energy and drive, to do the needed hustling required to deal with life postpaid employment.

I wondered how it was possible that he’d ended up the way he was despite what I’d heard about the millions he’d been given in his retirement cheque.

Later, discussing with others, I learnt how bad spending habits cultivated from time in paid employment, are often difficult to curb post-retirement, leading many who leave the company to run out of money quickly. Then those who try to venture into business of some sort, having no prior experience, most times, often get swindled (sometimes by close relatives) and/or just do the business wrong and end up failing.

All of this told me that despite the schooling we had all received, our jobs paid employment insulated us from the harsh realities of life in self-employment or business.

But that would only last until we had to retire, or worse, when we got sacked (which has happened to a lot of people when they least expect it).

The thoughts I nursed made me spend 2 solid years trying
to gain experience by starting a business of some sort. I was restless. At a point it became apparent that I could not combine working my day job with the plans I had.

[Read Should You Quit Your Job or Start Your Business Part-time?]

When I’d been a shift brewer it had been easy to do other things – including travel to attend entrepreneurship workshops. So,
I put my 2 year old exit plan into effect, and quit my job in
December 2001.

When I started out in business, I planned to get hired as a trainer/speaker, and I expect my credentials and long list of achievements in paid employment would speak for me.

But I soon learned things were not so straightforward! Things started out VERY bad, as I was unable to earn any tangible income for the first year – save for a pitiful N10k honorarium from the Centre for Management Development.

Yet, I had countless meetings, wrote numerous letters, to organizations everywhere. My efforts to get hired as a trainer/speaker had for the most part met with very little financial success.

People seemed unwilling to invite or engage me, despite my testimonials from presenting my original management paper on Self-Development at the Shangisha Centre for Management Development, on the invitation of the Director General , Dr. Mayaki.

It took me time to understand (actually someone in the business for a long time had to tell me) why I was not getting called in despite what they said was my impressive resume from Guinness, and the original menu of solutions I offered.

Nothing worked.

It began to dawn on me that all my years of university study and time spent in paid employment had not prepared me to do business in my country –at all (just like I had been warned, in a 1 hour closed door session by one of my expatriate bosses, after I told him I quit!)

It took me over 5 years to get a sense of direction. I had to learn how to find the right people to market to, and what to offer to do for them. All the things I thought mattered from my experiences in paid employment were put aside.

I then did deep thinking about how to take what I knew how to do (my skills) and use them to SHOW potential clients how I could solve their problems.

This led me to begin creating demo Excel-Visual Basic software applications to which I used in presentations to decision makers of micro to medium companies I approached (the big names never let me through the gates most times, so I let them be).

Eventually, as I improved my methods, sales began to happen on a more regular basis.

For instance, in March 2007, I built an Excel-Visual Basic driven Automatic Pay slip Generator Spreadsheet software application for a large hospital in Ikeja, Lagos. They continue to use it, even today (in 2018) over a decade later, to generate salary schedules, personal income tax and printed pays lips for over 120 employees.

See one of the video demonstrations for an advanced version of that app at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oG5Rtkgrthk

Another application I built for them was an Excel-VB driven
Automated Cash Book/Bank Reconciliation Software (See
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKOHXh4LKqE) .

About a month after I built the second application for that hospital, I succeeded in using demonstrations of both, to get another large hospital, also with over 100 staff to hire me to build an Excel-VB General Accounts Manager software that made use of formats/data from over 2 years of individual Excel workbooks they had store as weekly reports.

The second hospital purchased the Pay slip Generator and a year later (2008) hired me to build a Cash Office Payments Manager application.

The success I recorded with these companies was coming after years of struggling as a startup entrepreneur, to find clients willing to pay me to develop Excel-VB software for then.

So things began to look up for me when I decided to fall back on my spreadsheet programming skills, which I began offering to micro, small and medium sized bus9inesses – like those mentioned above. Today, I have clients in and out of Africa, who use my custom Excel-VB software (see www.excelheaven.biz).

And I also have experts in various fields who are paid members of my Excel Heaven Visual Basic Automation club, learning how to use Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) to automate their use of Microsoft Excel, from me.

Indeed, this past month (February 2018) the newest member of my club joined from Nairobi in Kenya.

He watched the video of my automated cashbook and then emailed to ask how he could learn. About 2 weeks later he had sent agreed advance payment to sign up for my 1 year One-On-One coaching in MS Excel-VB programming (see http://tayosolagbade.com/xlvb1on1.html )
[TIP: That year when I had my major breakthroughs (i.e. 2008) after reflecting on my experiences, I wrote the article titled “Is Your Child Learning for School or for Life” :
https://ezinearticles.com/?Is-Your-Child-Learning-For-
School-Or-For-Life?&id=1240561 ]

What I had gone through and the manner in which I’d emerged made me realize the formal schooling I’d gotten had NOT prepared me well enough for the real world. The desire to share my experiences for others to learn from drove me to write that article, as well as others published in the Best Practice Parenting category of my blog at http://tayosolagbade.com/sdnuggets/category/parenting/

That passion made me write THIS report you now read.

In 2006, I published a Whitepaper titled The World’s Future Prosperity Depends On Digital Multipreneurs.

It got so widely syndicated online that in 2015 I published it as an ebook (see http://www.lulu.com/shop/tayosolagbade/
the-worlds-future-prosperity-depends-ondigital-
multipreneurs/ebook/product-21951176.html).

The World's Future Prosperity Depends On Digital Multipreneurs™

Subtitle: Sustainable Socio Economic Prosperity Worldwide is Achievable Through Creation and Proliferation of Digital Multipreneurs™ in All Societies This book is based on a White Paper first published online by Tayo Solagbade in January 2006. Tayo has since applied the ideas and strategies described in it to achieve the success he enjoys today as a Location Independent Performance Improvement Specialist and Multipreneur (i.e. a highly versatile/multi-skilled entrepreneur), with a bias for delivering Best Practice solutions to Farm Businesses and others – by providing solutions to buyers within and outside Africa. More…

Today, I live the life of a Digital Multipreneur, proving that my ideas from that book actually work.

The above background is provided here not to brag or make myself look good, but to show how I have moved from being confused and unable to make reliable progress to being sure of what to do, how, where and for whom.

All of this has happened without my needing to go back to school to get more qualifications. Indeed, when I was confused, I still had all my qualifications and paid employment experiences. But they were not enough. I had to sit down, over time, to do serious critical thinking to find the right formula.

Today, I argue that developing a critical thinking habit, coupled with a passion for self-education is MORE important for achieving success in ANY field, than whatever qualifications a person may possess.

This is why I recommend, in this report, that a vocational skills based approach be made the foundation of formal schooling that we give our kids. It will make them enter into society as well rounded competent income earning adults.

No matter what life throws at them (jobs or no jobs), they will be able to fend for themselves.

A well-schooled person may NOT necessarily be well educated.

This is apparent from the glaring fact in many societies that MANY finish the highest levels of schooling and still enter society clueless about how to make a successful existence – especially financially.

In other words, they leave school knowing little or nothing about money and how to get it, outside paid employment.

My experience based understanding is that an educated person is one who knows WHAT to do to get whatever s/he wants AND who when unsure what to do, knows WHERE to go (or HOW) to find answers s/he needs to achieve his/her goals!

This is why I argue that every parent needs to TAKE OWNERSHIP of his/her child’s schooling, to ensure the child gets COMPLETE, BALANCED education that is real world relevant, boosting his/her chances of success in life as an adult.”

Today, I can confidently call myself EDUCATED due to the process I’ve followed via trial and error, plus lots of self-study and deep thinking, as reflected in my story told above.

To add perspective to what I have said above, I will give examples of educated persons as:

TRUE STORY: An Invitation from The Ministry of Youth and Social Development to Discuss My Paper Titled “Schooling Is a Means to an End and NOT an End In Itself”

Two 2 days ago (on Wednesday 14th March 2018) I got a call from the Ministry of Youth and Social Development.

The lady asked “Is this Mr. Tayo Solagbade?”.

I replied that it was.

She then went on to say they had received and read a cover letter and the 62 page version of my Work-In-Progress version of my Best Practice Parenting Report titled “Schooling Is a Means to an End and NOT an End In Itself”, which I’d submitted in printed form to the offices of the Honorable Commissioner as well as that of the Permanent Secretary.

She asked “When can we meet with you?”

I replied “Anytime at all you prefer will be acceptable to me.”

With that we agreed that I would come in to her office at 2.30p.m the next day (yesterday) and she hung up.

Below: Photo of my copies of the 2 letters beside a printed version of the 62 page report

letter-paper-ministry-shot

I got to her office about 15 minutes ahead of time yesterday p.m

And I recall having to get past a gatekeeper who initially told me she was out, until I mentioned my name and insisted I was given an appointment by her for 2.30p.m. Then he went “inside” and I overheard her exclaim “Aaaah….”. Next thing I knew, he came back smiling and motioned for me to take a seat.

About 10 minutes later, she came out of her office and we greeted briefly as she went out. Not long after, another lady popped her head into the office and asked if I was the person waiting to see the “Director”. I looked at the gatekeeper for guidance, and saw that he was nodding that I was.

I got up and walked towards her. She said “So you’re the one who wrote that paper – with a look of surprise in her eyes”. I replied that I had written a paper that I’d sent in to the ministry, but wondered why I was to see the director and not the lady in whose office we were.

That was when she explained that THAT lady had other assignments to attend and would be represented by her at a meeting that had been arranged for me to have with the Director.

When they Director’s name was mentioned, I smiled inwardly, because she was someone I’d met before and had extensive discussions with on the theme of the paper I’d now published.

For me, it was therefore fitting that I was to meet with her again. The first time we’d met in 2015. Back then I’d explained what led to my decision to start homeschooling my kids, via a Vocational Skills Acquisition based strategy, as I searched for an academic institution that would enable them continue doing so, along with their academic studies.

[NB: Full details are provided in my 62 page report, which anyone can request by sending me a message via my Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/tayo.solagbade]

The meeting soon got started and she explained that the “PS” (Permanent Secretary)  had sent her my paper, with the cover letter with notes that she was to invite me for a meeting to discuss the ideas I’d described in my paper.

To start off, she acknowledged the points I’d made in my report about the inadequacy of the current schooling system, and noted that what I had done, by CHECKING what the schools were DOING and taking action to develop an alternative that worked was the way to go.

The following were some of the questions I was asked (as her PA and the Deputy Director on either side of me) took notes while I spoke.

  1. Do you want to government to collaborate with you on this project?
  1. Are you proposing a change in the educational curriculum used by schools in the state? If YES, you will need to contact the Ministry of Education, as we at Youth and Social Development cannot take decisions binding on them(She added that work was already ongoing to review it, but that more could be done as per the issues I’d raised in my report)
  1. We have a parenting support network and we’re thinking of adopting your report’s ideas for use in that area. Can we invite you to give an experience-sharing talk to parents we work with?

Among other things, she noted that I could take what I was doing to the next level, by doing a summary or abstract to the Deputy Governor for higher level support.

The truth is that most of the questions they asked and the comments they made were consistent with my purpose for writing my paper in the first place. I wanted to ROCK THE BOAT of the Nigerian Educational System as currently run.

Not for any selfish attention getting motive, but for the sake of MANY parents who I believe may not realize how bad the system is for the kids they gladly push through it. The reaction I’ve seen so far confirms that a desire exists on the part of the policy makers, to do better.

I believe a good number of parents also want something better, for their kids. And if that is so, then the teachers are bound to fall in line and give the other 2 groups what they want: REAL WORLD RELEVANT EDUCATION that works for learners to survive and flourish in life AFTER school!

And that’s why I’ve been GLADLY sending this report to ANY persons who have requested it. Get your copy by sending me a message via my Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/tayo.solagbade]

Note that what I sent to the ministry, and which I offer NOW, to anyone is the 62 page pre-publication edition, so I am still working in more content, and refining it towards final publishing.

However, even as it is now, which is what I sent to the ministry, it offers massively useful volume of information and education for parents, teachers and policy makers willing to study its contents diligently.

Here’s an excerpt from the report:

“My parents told me they worked while in school, to pay their way especially through tertiary education. This cannot be bad, because it forces the learner to develop income earning competence in readiness for his/her entry into the real world. Sometimes that competence could evolve into a successful vocation.

Some big names we know today, like Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Richard Branson – all started engaging actively in business while still students in school – some even from their high school days.

The child that is guided to do this can only end up better off in the long run. I think it’s a shame that we are being told to spoon feed kids right into the completion of their formal schooling.

My experiences and observations/studies clearly show that it is the wrong thing to do. And that is another reason why I have supported my 8 and 11 year old daughters to venture into various income earning vocations like make-up and gele tying, hair styling, baking of a variety of confectioneries in addition to drinks making, PLUS snail rearing on a micro scale.” – Tayo K. Analysis of physicist Albert Einstein’s brain revealed that his was slightly smaller than the average human brain. Quote this bit of trivia the next time some macho guy brags about the male brain being bigger than the female one. Look where Einstein’s “small” brain got him!” – National Geographic

This quote is self-explanatory, but in this piece, I “extend” its message to include a tendency in most people across societies the world over, to use physical attributes to draw conclusions about what a person can or cannot do.

This habit stems from a belief many of us grow up to accept from what we see and hear around us, about our capabilities and those of others.

PII 102: You Need Big Ideas – NOT a Big Brain!

For instance, the bigger girl is expected to run faster than the smaller statured one. The bigger girl is expected to be able to jump higher on the basketball court than a smaller sized team mate.

Then there are the silly gender based generalizations.

Men are expected to be braver than women. Males are expected to deal with worry and stress better than females. They are expected to perform better in sports, even business than women.

So, the person with what is considered a “weaker” attitude by society’s majority will often find him/herself not being given a fair and impartial opportunity or consideration to pursue success.

This happens all the time, in various areas of endeavour, all over the world – but in some societies, systems have been put in place to give more balanced access to opportunities to members.

But the truth remains that those biases persist, and people will continue to make unfounded assumptions about other people’s potential for a long time to come.

They WILL do the same to you, and to others you know or care about – including your kids.

This is why you MUST as a matter of urgent necessity, prepare yourself to deal with such potentially limiting generalizations, whenever they may be directed towards you.

I tell my two (11 and 8 year) old daughters this all the time i.e. that they must never let anyone tell them there is something they cannot do.

This is why I started them early in the business of personal development and achievement by way of income-earning vocational skills acquisition (Read: PII 007: Parenting Is NOT A Democracy [Hint: The Need to Assert Yourself to Get Results That Matter – Lesson from True Story of a Girl Who Made Pizza Without An Oven])

The article linked below explains how I got them to attend a 2 week intensive training course organized by the Lagos State Ministry of Youth Development.

Read: Empower Your Daughter to be Her Own Boss With Minimal Resources Via Vocation She Can Build on to Excel [Case Study: Cosmetic Makeup and Gele Tying]

It is noteworthy to mention here that the organizers initially expressed doubts that my girls, being so young, would be able to follow the lessons, talk less of being able to actually DO what the instructors would teach.

But on the final (graduation) day, the 8 year old was the centre of attention, with guests coming to record videos of her making up her “client”.

When she was called out to receiving her certificate, the special guest from Alausa, who was doing the presentation looked surprised when he saw her walking up to him.

The presenter, quickly assured him she was the one the certificate was meant for, noting that “she was the youngest participant”. (All the others were females in their mid twenties to over 50 years old)

I told my girls during those 2 weeks that they could do what was being taught as well as any of the other adults, as .long as they BELIEVED they could.

And I made sure to personally take them down and stay with them all through each day’s training session for the duration of the course.

A week later, I’d arranged for them to resume weekly training lessons in hair styling with a lady we’d met at the graduation ceremony.

They began about 7 months ago, but today are developing what is increasingly closer to “unconscious competence” in plaiting various styles (Didi, Ghana Weaving, Senegalese Twist, Patewo and Base, Shut up etc).

The key word n the above last sentence is UNCONSCIOUS COMPETENCE!

When one has repeatedly carried out an activity to the point that s/he can do it PROFICIENTLY without needing to focus one’s attention exclusively on it, then one can be said to have achieved UNCONSCIOUS COMPETENCE at it.

People who excel at what they do, in ways that are superior to the average person’s ability to deliver, are often those who possess UNCONSCIOUS COMPETENCE.

What I have done for YEARS is to actively challenge my kids to hone their gifts, talents and skills to the point of UNCONSCIOUS COMPETENCE when they use them.

I do this because I have reaped the benefit that comes from possessing that ability. It has enabled me deliver superior performances in every area of endeavour I have ventured over the last 3 decades of my life – right from my days in school, through my time in paid employment and especially over the last decade of my life as an entrepreneur.

My passion for what I do, which is based on areas I’m gifted /talented had made it easy for me to devote thousands of hours for years, without losing enthusiasm.

This is why I succeed in spite of adversity – continually baffling nay-saying others, to bounce back from setback after setback, outlasting delay after delay after delay, overcoming disappointment after disappointment, to advance in pursuit of the BIG DREAMS I have.

And that brings me to the core message I want to pass across this week.

You see, my drive to develop UNCONSCIOUS COMPETENCE actually comes from my relentless dedication to achieving BIG IDEAS and DREAMS I come up with.

In other words, thinking big is the FUEL that motivates me to develop UNCONSCIOUS COMPETENCE, which in turn equips me to develop and implement my BIG ideas, to achieve my BIG dreams.

I’m coaching my kids to develop the same mental attitude I have of THINKING BIG like I do, and never accepting there is anything they are too small or young to do.

This is why I am constantly coming up with ideas to brainstorm with them, about how they can use the different skills they’ve picked up, to go to the next level – which is to make money.

It’s not been easy for the girls in particular. They’ve often hesitated to take this next step – and I know it’s mainly because they do not see their peers doing any such thing.

But their male (teenage) siblings are already setting the pace in this regard, and I know it’s only a matter of time before they also catch the bug.

One thing is certain – by the time my girls arrive their teens, it’s unlikely that they will be letting anyone tell them being female and having smaller brains means they cannot achieve as much as their male counterparts.

As parents we should aim to help kids understand that they have the ability to achieve anything they set their minds to.

And as individuals, we owe ourselves a duty to BELIEVE that about ourselves too!

All human beings are born with some kind of unique genius. We just need to narrow down to what it is for each person. Some of us discover it by ourselves. Others get it pointed out to them by those they interact with.
Sadly few people who pass through formal schooling are able to preserve their capacity for INDEPENDENT thinking and creative reasoning (which is a function of the above mentioned genius they arrive the world with)

All human beings are born with some kind of unique genius. We just need to narrow down to what it is for each person. Some of us discover it by ourselves. Others get it pointed out to them by those they interact with.
Sadly few people who pass through formal schooling are able to preserve their capacity for INDEPENDENT thinking and creative reasoning (which is a function of the above mentioned genius they arrive the world with).
By the time they emerge from that supposedly “educational” experience, they display an unhealthy preference for wanting to follow the crowd, to be like others, to NOT stand out, to belong to – and NOT stray away from – the pack or tribe.
And that’s what makes the few who refuse to let formal schooling “damage” them in that manner, seem so exceptional!

It’s what made Albert Einstein make such a formidable impact on the world with his ideas.

Little wonder that he consistently showed a contempt for formal education – having passed through it himself, and famously denouncing his teachers along the way.
Below is one of many quotes credited to him, in which he criticized the faulty system used in formal schools, whereby memorization of facts and figures was rewarded over and above reasoning skills:

“Never memorize something that you can look up.”

And here is an excerpt from an excellent BBC report which notes the fact that Eisnten excelled by NOT adopting what formal education demanded i.e Rote Learning.

“Intriguingly, those who have more spindle events tend to have greater ‘fluid intelligence’ – the ability to solve new problems, use logic in new situations, and identify patterns – the kind Einstein had in spades. “They don’t seem related to other types of intelligence, such as the ability to memorise facts and figures, so it’s really specific to these reasoning skills,” says Fogel. This ties in nicely with Einstein’s disdain for formal education and advice to “never memorise anything which you can look up”.

I happen to be one of those few who managed to emerge from the formal schooling process without losing my Creative Genius.

And this despite the fact that I managed to do quite well in the academic system. In fact, I did so well that I got awards right till I left the university.
Not only was I best graduating student, but I also scored the highest ever C.G.P.A (5.9)  in the department I finished from. And on top of that, I got awards for sporting excellence as well.

On getting to the real world however, I discovered that being able to use the knowledge I had or read up, to “solve new problems, use logic in new situations, and identify patterns ” – was what the WORLD really valued in people.

So while in paid employment, I dug deep into that natural genius of mine, for doing THAT and it turned me into a high performing manager that set all kinds of workplace achievement records in 7-short years.

I did things that got me noticed early in my career and earned me rapid career advancement opportunities well ahead of those who were my supposed seniors.
Since starting my own business, my knack for using the knowledge I have or that I read up, to “solve new problems, use logic in new situations, and identify patterns” has helped me build a profitable business model, that enables me get paid by clients locally and internationally, without face to face meetings.
One recurring theme has always been that I tend to THINK of and SEE things that are likely to be needed well ahead of others.

When I take action based on those insights I have, most people initially just scoff at my efforts and even call me foolish or silly. But eventually, because I never let go, and diligently persist in trying to work those ideas, I eventually prove them valid and those who doubted become converts.
This has happened again and again. I’m used to it. Any person who wants to make the most of his/her genius MUST get used to it, and never let it stop him/her from taking action to do what s/he is convinced about.

Today, I’m acting on the above mentioned instinct, again, by launching a new website – www.discovercotonou.com – to meet a series of needs I’ve identified from 4 solid years of careful research based on enquiries from visitors to www.tayosolagbade.com.

dc-edit-ok

Once again I’m seeing what others are NOT seeing. But soon, they will. And I’ll be waiting to reap the usual rewards.

The same thing is currently happening for me in the area of Best Practice Parenting and the message I’m preaching that parents avoid making the mistake of NOT exposing their kids of income earning vocational skills based education EARLY in life – ideally alongside formal schooling. More on THAT in a separate article to come soon.If you need help making it happen, click here to send me a message

For NOW, here’s my admonition to you.

You too can have the same experience of NOT letting formal schooling’s “IMPACT” limit your ability to manifest your genius.

[IMPORTANT NOTE:====

On 4th May 2014, Tayo’s 9 year old domain (Spontaneousdevelopment dot com), which hosted his website, was taken over by Aplus.net.

Within a few days however, Tayo used his advanced self-taught web development skills to build a SUPERIOR “reincarnation” of it the website http://www.tayosolagbade.com.

But updates are still ongoing to URLs bearing the old domain name in most of the over 1,000 web pages, and blog posts he’s published.

If you experience any difficulties finding a page or document, email Tayo at tksola dot com.

Click “Tayo, What Happened to SpontaneousDevelopmentDotCom ?” to read a detailed narrative about how the above event occurred :-))

Here’s an article Tayo wrote, to inspire others to defy adversity, and bounce back to even greater reckoning at what they do EVERY time:

Succeed by Emerging from Adversity Like a Phoenix

(TayoSolagbade.com launches extra Hosting plan with FREE Web Marketing!)

And he wrote the one below, to explain why losing a domain name, no matter how old, NO LONGER determines your online success or otherwise:

A Proven Strategy to Find Profitable Buyers Regardless of Your Domain Name
