Here’s an article in which I explained why I chose to create the above mini version of the original Poultry Farm Manager app which handles ONE year of farm data (Price = N250K) and is described in THIS Youtube video.

I want to help farm business owners visualize how an Enterprise Information System like the Poultry Farm Manager, can increase their chances of farm business success.

That’s why I’m offering this new app free to attendees who run poultry farms.

To give you further insight of how this app can help you, I’ve published a short story article on my blog about an entrepreneurial couple.

It describes how they used their EIS software, in conjunction with best practice strategies to solve challenging problems in their layer farm.

Story: After Resolving Layers Feeding Problems, Selling Increased Eggs Output Became a Headache!

PDF-Story: After Resolving Layers Feeding Problems, Selling Increased Eggs Output Became a Headache!

A young couple tackles unexpected challenges in running their commercial layer farm. This story illustrates how Cost-Saving Best Practice ideas, tools and strategies, can be used to solve problems, and boost long term farm performance/profits.

=Story Begins=

Chike looked at the growing layers of egg crates in the farm shop. They were rapidly running out of free space to put new arrivals from the farm.

Ever since they returned to using the right quality ingredients – based on their derived ration formular – their 8,000 layers had been producing eggs at a Hen Day Percentage (HDP) of between 70 to 75% daily.

And this had translated to over 25% increase in egg collections, compared to what they were getting before.

To keep track of the farm’s Key Performance Indicators(KPIs), Chike and Shade (his wife), had always used their Poultry Farm Manager software.

In addition to other KPIs, it auto-computed the daily HDP for each of the layer pens.

Then it plotted the daily value for each layers pen into ONE line chart. This made it possible to compare the performance of the groups of birds in the different pens.

So far the plotted lines remained fairly close together, and had now stayed above 70% for over 4 weeks.

This assured Chike that the birds were all doing fairly well.

Layers Key Performance Indicator Line Charts - Plotting Daily HDP Percentages

But the situation had been quite different, over 2 months earlier.

The couple had noticed a progressive downward sloping of the plotted HDP lines.

From well above 75%, the points plotted had dropped under 70% and plunged below 60% within 2 weeks!

It was an alarming change, and did not appear to be slowing down at the time.

Shade had posted data from the Farm Production Records Form filled by the farm hands, into the spreadsheet software on the Monday starting the 3rd week of the drops in HDP values.

What she saw had made her quickly call Chike on the phone

“I think we have a problem. The HDP just dropped below the 60% lower limit. These birds are not doing well at all!” she said

“But we’ve checked and confirmed there’s no sign of infection. We’ve diligently used all relevant medication in their feed.  What else can we do? “ Chike replied.

Shade said “Chike,  think it’s time we took a look again at what we’re feeding them dear. I know we asked Jero the last time and he said he was using the ration formula we gave him.

But I have a feeling we’re still missing something at that end.

Look, even when one has a good ration formula, you know compounding the ration properly is another matter entirely. How are we sure the feed being bagged for us, is actually properly compounded to deliver the benefits of our ration formula?”

Chike was quiet for a while. Jero was his friend, and he felt it would be unfair to subject him to suspicion in a way that could damage their relationship.

But he also realized that his wife was making a good point.

So he agreed.

And they paid Jero an unannounced visit at his feed mill on a day/time he’d mentioned he would be producing the next 2 tonne batch of feed for their farm.

They were shocked to discover that Jero had quietly changed the composition of feed agreed, to reduce costs, while still selling to them at the normal prices.

This was their long term supplier, with whom they had had a contract arrangement to produce bagged feed, since they started out 4 years earlier!

They also found out he’d been using weevil infested maize grains from an isolated silo, to compound rations for unsuspecting farmers.

That explained the growing presence of weevils they’d noticed in some batches of feed.

It was heart breaking for Chike especially.

He and Jero went way back.

Jero tried to explain. His operating costs had risen due to the fuel scarcity crisis. He’d had to run his diesel generator for much longer periods, and the costs had really eaten deep into his cash flow.

That was when he recalled the isolated silo of grains.

Normally he would never have considered using it, but he was running low on the good quality stock of maize.

So he decided to mix a little from the infested one with each batch of feed. Then when he got no negative feedback, he’d increased the amount added.

It was the eventual impact of poor quality ingredients on the bird’s performance that led to Chike and his wife paying him the visit.

Chike and Shade had always felt they needed to have their own feed mill.

They knew it would enable them have closer quality control on the feed manufacturing process for their birds. And they’d been pursuing funding with their bankers for that purpose.

Following their discovery of Jero’s deceit, they renewed their efforts.

Their bankers eventually agreed to finance the setup of a 2 tonne feed mill.

The feeding problems soon became a thing of the past: And then another problem reared its head!

They were not the only ones who had eggs to sell. What was more, two new farms had also commenced operations on the other side of town.

With the couple’s own dramatic increase in production, a glut of sorts had occurred.

Unfortunately, there was no festive season around the corner to look forward to.

Normally, festivities meant purchases would increase, and they could quickly sell out excess stocks of eggs.

But it was just late August. Christmas was still far away.

The couple’s farm shop store rarely got half filled. This was because the market women often came daily to buy between 5 to 50 crates (in groups).

However, these women always bargained hard. And they had no loyalties to anyone.

They kept communication links with competitor farms through friends and other sellers.

Chike knew they often compared prices offered from his shop with that of other farm owners, and used that to negotiate concessions etc.

He did not mind giving in, as bulk sales often made up for it.

However, during glut periods, the women tended to really get mean.

That had been the case since the start of this week. They had been coming around but not buying.

Instead they would claim Mr. A’s farm was offering them N10 less or even lower.

The women knew many farmers were scared of letting the eggs get spoilt from over staying in storage.

Their farm shop stores were not built for long term storage. Poor circulation of air and presence of rodents were a major concern.

And this often made farmers accept exploitative offers from the market women during glut periods.

Chike Naturally Felt Betrayed, and a Little Bitter

These women had been buying from him for the 4 years since he and his wife started their farm business.

He had often let them take products away without in full, sometimes without paying at all – so they could pay later.

Some had even come so close that he loaned them money to pay their kids school fees, and they paid back as they sold the eggs they collected on credit.

Yet, during periods like this, some would gang up and basically try to eat their cake and have it.

If one was weak, s/he would end literally giving the farm away out of fear of being stuck with excess eggs no one would buy.

As he stood thinking, the mini van – filled with another load of eggs from the farm – arrived with his wife behind the wheel.

They’d let the driver go a month before. He’d complained about the work load and demanded an increase in salary they could not afford at the time.

They were now wondering if that had been a wise decision, as it was beginning to tell on them.

The bus was filled with eggs from yesterday’s production.

And as she joined him, Shade handed him the Farm Production Records form. The handwritten entries showed the birds were not relenting in churning out more eggs as at the the second collection for the day.

It was the only time he’d ever found himself wishing the layers would NOT do so well!

“What are the women saying dear?” Shade asked

Chike replied saying: “The same thing they said yesterday. They basically want us to sell to them at cost price, or they’ll not buy as much as they normally do. They claim some other farm is offering more. I’ve asked them to consider the cost of transportation to get the eggs from that other farm. But they insist it does not matter. But you and I know it does. They just want to take advantage of the situation” he replied in resignation.”

As he said those words, Chike recalled a conversation they’d had with Bello (their Farm Business Best Practice Consultant), about their sales and marketing strategy.

Bello had pointed out that it was risky to depend too heavily on individual, low price buyers, especially as they (i.e Chike and Shade) aimed for much higher farm output.

He noted that apart from the stress of handling smaller transactions, there was also the challenge of emptying the store in a timely manner, to avoid build back to the farm.

It occurred to Chike that THAT was exactly what they were facing.

Bello had advised reaching out to businesses that made regular use of eggs and chicken meat (for disposal of old layers).

He’d recommended that Chike and Shade make special bulk offers to such businesses (e.g. hotels, restaurants, bars, catering outfits etc) – possibly with an agreement to either let them pick up the products from the farm shop, or to transport it to their premises for a fee.

The objective would be to establish a long term arrangement with as many such potential bulk buyers at possible. That way, as they found need for more buyers, they could simply call them up.

Bello had warned that succeeding with the strategy would require some persistence. But he’d also assured that it would work quite well, once in place.

Now resolved in his mind, Chike grabbed Shade by the arm, and said “You know. I think we can do better than what we’re doing now. At the level we’re operating, we cannot simply let these women hold us to ransom like this. Do you remember what Bello told us to try doing?”

“You mean reaching out to owners of hotels and restaurants to buy from us on contract basis?” asked Shade

“Yes. I think it’s what we need to do. Apart from ensuring we no longer run out of possible buyers, we’ll also be able to sell out faster, since these kinds of people would buy in bulk” said Chike.

Shade said “Hmm. I think you’re right. But it won’t be easy, as Bello said. However, given the experience we’re having in the hands of these women, I think we now know it’s better for us to explore that option. In fact, even if there was no glut situation, selling out faster in bulk appeals to me.

It means we’ll have more free time, and worry less about managing large stocks of eggs in the stock. We’ll just need to keep those we approach informed of the next availability of bulk eggs stocks for purchase.”

“Well, we better get started then.” Chike said, with a note of excitement in his voice.

“Let’s begin with the hotel near the roundabout on the way to the Governor’s office. When I was still working with Business Machines Limited, we used to hold our sales training sessions in their meetin ghalls. We might be able to strike something off with him.”

=Story Ends=

Take Away: Do Your Marketing BEFORE You’re Ready to Sell!

The above message is not necessarily jusf for poultry farmers.

If you’re a farm business owner, I doubt that I need to say much more here.

My message is this:

a. Adopt Best Practice based Continuous Improvement Systems in your farm business, to help you avoid and/or resolve potentially serious problems.

b. Do your marketing well ahead of when you will have need for buyers to take your farm products off you!

That way, you’ll make better profits, and also go through less stress.

No. 131: To Succeed, Creatively Apply What You Learn

Albert Einstein underwent formal schooling. Did any of his school/class mates also become geniuses?

What about the legendary Afro Beat inventor, Fela Anikulapo Kuti (who studied music in a UK college)? Or Bill Gates? Richard Branson? Steve Jobs?

Why didn’t their classmates succeed like them?

Don’t Know About You, But I Have Always Wondered Why That Happens…

They all presumably attended the same classes, and were taught by the same teachers. And it’s not like those who became geniuses got extra coaching.

Indeed, quite a number of geniuses actually dropped out before completing their formal schooling.

So one would have imagined they’d have ended up worse off.

Instead, history shows they often did much better than those who finished school!

Why does this happen?

The Answer: Individuals Differ In Their Ability to Creatively Apply What They Know, and Learn

Genes may play a small role here, but it will not be a defining or limiting one.

This is why in societies across the world, we often come across many examples of people who achieve great things despite having little or nothing, in comparison to others who had everything given to them.

E.g. Persons who rise from rags to riches.

Knowing that they do not have anyone to depend on, they learn to look inwards and dig deep.

Sometimes they are so poor they cannot afford to attend school!

So they focus on their goals, and actively explore ways to progress, no matter how bleak things look.

And they never accept that what they want is impossible to get. This is a basic instinct that drives them.

They do not know how to give up!

Based on the Above, I Believe “Attitude” Is What Makes People Who Attend the Same Training, Perform Differently Afterwards

In 1997, while employed in Guinness, I attended a 3 day MS Excel training course, along with about 11 co-workers from different departments.

It was facilitated by a Microsoft Certified Professional.

On the last day, the facilitator held up a copy of a Microsoft Excel 97/Visual Basic Step by Step  guide written by Reed Jacobson, and asked “Which one of you is Tayo Solagbade here?”

I raised my hand in surprise. I had deliberately stayed quiet since the course began, despite my considerable MS Excel passion. So I was surprised that he knew my name.

Looking at me he said “The IT guys in headquarters said you’re the only one who will understand what is in this book. That’s why I did not bother discussing macros. But we’re giving a copy to each person anyway.”

You may wonder where they got that impression about me from (?)

Well, I’d gained company wide reputation for using self-taught skills to develop automated spreadsheet applications, that had boosted my department’s data handling and report generation performance.

And I’d done all that without having access to ANY formal learning resources.

No training. No tutorials. Just self-tutoring with MS Excel Help.

The IT guys in my brewery came to be good friends with me as a result. And word eventually reached Lagos etc.

Within a Month, I’d Devoured the Entire Reed Jacobson Manual…

I also explored all the CDROM Excel workbook samples that came with it, and promptly began creating more sophisticated apps for use in my department.

In contrast, those with whom I attended the 3 day course (despite each getting a copy of the manual, which was for everyday users), did little or nothing.

In other words, I was the only one who went away, and actually did something with what I was GIVEN!

But I Had to Do So “Creatively”, In Order to Succeed

It’s important that I emphasize the word CREATIVELY.

For instance, the examples provided in Reed Jacobson’s macro programming manual were for financial reporting.

I was however working as a shift brewer in the production department.

So I had to develop applications for recording, and analyzing brewing production data, for report generation and decision making in BREWING, and not FINANCE.

Those were two very different scenarios.

As a result, I could not copy and DIRECTLY use what was in the manual or the sample MS Excel files on the CDROM.

I had to sit down, study my unique situation, and then adapt what I’d learnt to suit my needs.

It was far from being easy.

And it was not something that could be hurried.

But I had the passion and desire to influence change. I’d identified a need to move from tedious manual report preparation to time saving automated PC based report generation.

And I could see that MS Excel could help me achieve my goal.

The above state of mind set me apart from my “course mates”.

In Virtually Every Area of Life, the Same Process Occurs

I read Michel Fortin’s Ten Commandments of Power Positioning for the first time, as a start-up entrepreneur in January 2002.

And I immediately realized the ideas in it could help me achieve long term marketing reach and impact in my business.

So I re-read it REPEATEDLY, as he’d advised, until I internalized the key principles he advocated.

Then I diligently put them to use in everything I did, to promote my products and services.

The success I’m recording today is in part due to my successful use of Fortin’s Ten Commandments.

Another example: If you decide to hire a fitness coach to help you lose weight, you’ll need to DO what he tells you, and apply your creativity, where relevant, to keep going.

For instance, if you are married with kids, and your trainer is single, don’t sit down and grumble saying:

It’s easy for him to say. After all he does not have to worry about a spouse and kids. Why won’t he have time to do sit-ups and push ups!

The truth is some people will be in the same situation as you, and still get it done!

Take my example…

For years while still based in Lagos, Nigeria, I adapted in whatever ways I felt necessary, to ensure I NEVER missed my daily exercise routine.

And that included waking up BEFORE the kids did, and also WAITING till they all went to bed.

But when it was not possible to avoid them, I soon found it was best to simply ask the kids to join me!

Along with other distractions they created, my 3 year old was fond of climbing on my back as I did my push-ups.

Rather than get upset, I decided to use her as added weight – making my exercise regime tougher and at the same time fun-filled ;-)))

I’ve also used the same approach for getting my work done i.e. writing, and spreadsheet programming.

Don’t Expect Life to Present You the Same Challenges You Were Given in the Classroom (or Your Textbook)!

That would be naïve…and childish…and irresponsible :-))

Those who excel often refuse to let (what Burt Dubin calls) “sloth, indifference etc…” prevent them from creatively making the most of what they learn, to turn their circumstances around.

Read the life stories of Einstein, Brandson, Fela Kuti (who created, and used Afro Beat music to fight oppression) etc, and you’ll see what I mean.

They took what every other person already knew (or had access to), and used it differently (i.e. creatively), to achieve their goals.

In fact Fela’s legendary achievements – despite facing great adversity  for decades came mainly from doing that!

Successful coaches and mentors in all fields will confirm this to be true. Even in football.

Not every product of a football academy ends up being a Didier Drogba, Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo. Very often, those who get to the top of the pile add creativity and persistence to the mix!

I’ve devoted countless hours to learning about writing and public speaking (e.g. from experts like Burt Dubin), towards developing strategies for marketing what I do.

At a point, my unique experiences trying to apply what I learnt, led me to develop what I call my Public Speaking for Business Marketing System™ (which I’ve used to win high paying clients).

I also wrote:Proven Techniques (And Strategies) You Can Use To Start and Finish Writing ANYTHING”.

These, along with other creative efforts, helped me relentlessly build marketing reach and impact on, and off the web. The resulting name recognition has led to sales of my products and services.

Key point: Rather than simply transplant them, I found ways to ADAPT the ideas I learnt about, to suit my unique situation!

And It’s a Continuous Process: Your Subsequent Efforts BUILD on Past Ones

That way, nothing is wasted!

As an expert in your field, you want potential clients to choose you over competitors.

Start creatively applying what you know, and anything you learn, so you can perform at a superior level.

This includes adapting whatever you pick up from a (formal or informal) mentor or coach, to suit the unique circumstances you encounter, at any point in time.

Do it right, and sooner than later, success will be yours.

Conversation between Entrepreneur Parent and His Kids’ Lesson Teacher

How well do you know your child’s teacher(s)? By “know” I mean meeting and engaging him/her in conversation about what s/he thinks education for success in life is about, and how to go about giving it.

I share excerpts from a conversation (online chat) with my kids’ lesson teacher, which reveals why connecting with your child’s teacher(s) in the above manner may be necessary.

If you don’t do it now, you may have to contend, in future, with mis-educated adult kids, failing in life!

==Conversation Begins===

Lesson Teacher: “ Sir, the kids are fond of selling iron rods and I don’t know why.

Me: “What is the problem: Are they doing it during lesson periods?”

Lesson Teacher: “It’s distracting their focus at home and school.”

Me: “I don’t understand. Are they doing it when they are supposed to be in lesson with you…or when they are supposed to be attending classes in school? Or are they failing to do assignments given them during school or lesson periods. Let me know…”

Lesson Teacher: “Ok I will let you know.”

Me: “What did you observe that made you say what you did? I have a reason for asking…Did their mother complain to you?”

Lesson Teacher: “I realised they look for iron rods on street and I’m not comfortable with it.”

Me: “Well, from a SAFETY and SECURITY point of view (with all the kidnapping going on in Nigeria), I do see how it may not be OK. However, I can tell you that I have STRONGLY encouraged them to do what you see them doing, since they told me about it.

But I have always told them to avoid straying away from the neighbourhood, and to ALWAYS move together. This, I’m sure applies mainly to <12 year old’s name> and <10 year old’s name>.”

Lesson Teacher: “Ok sir…You got it exactly.”

Lesson Teacher: “I will call them tonight to find out how they’ve been going about it, and remind them of the need to be careful. Other than that, I am determined to help my kids  develop their entrepreneurial instincts and talents.

Indeed, before they clock 15 years, I aim to ensure EACH of them has a micro business s/he is running on the side. Seriously.  That’s what our schools are NOT teaching us. And that’s why so many of us have our “certificates”, but can only look for jobs.

We don’t know how to create products and services we can sell if NO jobs are available. I don’t want my kids to end up like that.

Think about the matter you and I are discussing regarding my seeking audience with Mr. <name of my client> about your business idea.

It’s because you’re trying to do something for yourself, since jobs you got are not giving the JOY and satisfaction you want.

I’m trying to kill 2 birds with one stone for my kids.

They learn school work, but they also learn to be entrepreneurial in their thinking and actions. And they learn to value and respect money – by EARNING it, instead of asking their parents all the time, to give them money. See?”

Lesson Teacher: “I understand…But they need proper orientation”

Me: “I don’t understand? Proper orientation…please explain?”

Lesson Teacher: “I mean they should know the value of education alongside the entrepreneur upgrading.”

Me: “I’m glad you expressed this opinion. It’s now obvious you have yet to understand certain IMPORTANT things my friend.

Education must NEVER be considered separate from ENTREPRENEURSHIP TRAINING. The two go together.

My advice to you is this: Google “Sir Ken Robinson” and watch one or more of his videos (e.g. Schools Kill Creativity). There are articles I have written, and others (like Seth Godin, Robert Kiyosaki etc), which explain why what we learn in our schools today is mostly useless to us in life.

Ask yourself: Why are you talking to me about starting a business, and having such a hard time doing so? I would have thought the EDUCATION you got in school would have prepared you for that???

But apparently it did not!

Does that not tell you something is wrong with the education we get? What is education…should it not prepare one to succeed in the real world?

You have a lot to learn. And the first step will be to understand that you have been wrongly oriented about what education really means.

Here’s my advice. Start reading Robert Kiyosaki’s works online. I owned a copy of his book:

http://www.amazon.com/Want-Rich-Happy-Dont-School/dp/0944031595

If You Want to Be Rich & Happy Don’t Go to School: Ensuring Lifetime Security for Yourself and Your Children.”

It was his first best seller if I recall correctly.

That man is a multi-millionaire. He was an OLODO*in school, while his father was a top educationist in USA!

[NB*: “Olodo” = “Yoruba” word for “dismal performer”]

Robert kept embarrassing the father by doing poorly in school. But today he’s super rich. His father was (often) broke, as a teacher!”

Lesson Teacher: “I understand everything and will Google what you said now.”

Me: This website (linked below) offers a review of Robert Kiyosaki’s book that I just mentioned above. Since you’re unlikely to be able to get the book to read without buying it, I suggest you read the review at http://charlesholmes.net/2013/05/if-you-want-to-be-rich-and-happy-dont-go-to-school-by-robert-kiyosaki/

I am telling you all this because I have SUFFERED greatly for being too focussed on school success and ending up unprepared to succeed in the real world, outside a salary job.

There are fewer and fewer jobs out there today, for people finishing from school. Most people will have to start a small business of their own, no matter how well they perform in school.

And it is those who already know how to find what people will pay them GOOD MONEY for, that will succeed the best.

That’s what my kids are learning.

I challenged them to find a way to make money for themselves. One day they told me they discovered Mallams would pay them for iron**  they are able to find.

[NB**:  “Iron” here refers to scrap made of iron e.g damaged devices, mechanical parts from cars, and other machines etc]

I encouraged them to continue.

On a certain occasion, I was around when a Mallam came to buy, and I joined them in negotiating a better selling price.

My advice to you: read, and think about what I’ve said.

It’s the key to your success in the new venture you say you wish to start. I have to go offline now on my laptop. Will be on my Blackberry, if you still wish to continue.

(Few minutes later, his next message arrives via my Blackberry app interface)

Lesson Teacher: “I really need you by my side to continue the chat and learn more from you. I am appreciating all (the) fact(s) you are telling me.”

Me: Click the links to the websites I posted above, and READ the information there. It is the key to your mental emancipation or freedom. You need that to truly succeed outside paid employment.

==Conversation Ends===

Final Words: Your Kid’s Teacher May Need YOUR Help…to Teach YOUR Child Better!

NB: I’m assuming here that YOU do not yourself need re-orientation. Otherwise, start with yourself!

This young man, in my estimation, is in his mid to late 30s.

Earlier in January, he came to me saying he was not happy with his employment in the tutoring agency handling my kids’ home coaching.

According to him, the pay was poor, despite the heavy workload.

So he wanted to know how he could pursue his dream of starting his own business.

But he was not sure what he could do to make money.

He just knew he did not want to continue working for an employer, because he felt he would earn better if self-employed.

I told him that since he’s not married and has no dependants, then he’s perfectly positioned to achieve his goal.

That’s a much better way to start. I had the opposite experience – VERY VERY TOUGH!

I explained that he just needs to identify the right business to start, and work hard.

With the  exchange we’ve now had above, I’m hopeful the first obstacle to his succeeding with his plans has been (or is in the process of being) removed.

By this I refer to the “employee” mentality or orientation, that conventional schools instil in people.

It makes them think no other way exists for succeeding in life, except to “go to school, study hard, get good grades, and get a good job”.

The realities in today’s world make it obvious jobs are no longer there. Even not-so-good ones!

And THAT is the dilemma that’s facing many young people today.

When they finish school, and discover this truth, they are left confused about what to do next.

If you fail to guide your kids to develop their entrepreneurial instincts AHEAD of time, you may end up doing extra parenting for them when they should already be independent of you.

And it may NOT be a pleasant experience.

I wish you well as you prepare your children with the right educational experiences.

Experiences which equip them with the ability to succeed, regardless of whether they are in paid employment, or out of it.

That – in my considered opinion – is what makes successful parenting.

And you may need to check and ensure your kid’s teacher(s) are on the same wavelength with you, if you want to succeed!

8 Practical Considerations You Need to Start a Fish Farm (One Page Practical Mind Map, for Aspiring Fish Farmers and Teachers of Fish Farming!)

Starting business part-time, before leaving paid employment is best (though it did NOT work for me). However, this safer approach has its own challenges. Your “employee duties” can deny you time to properly investigate the prospects of a venture you’re considering.

Sometimes, even if you can make out time, you may lack the training/skill and exposure to competently assess the feasibility of the venture.

Or even to decide how to get started. As a result you’re forced to depend heavily (or exclusively) on a consultant – for a professional fee.

Now, as long as the expert is not lazy, incompetent or even dishonest, depending on a consultant should yield useful returns.

However, in these days of elaborate get-rich-quick schemes, phoney-experts offering attractively packaged farm business training and start-up packages, promising heaven and earth, abound out here.

Many aspiring farm business owners have been duped, with some left with nothing to show!

Recent enquiries from my website have come from persons in paid employment looking to start smallholder farm businesses on the side.

A number of my clients actually work 9 to 5 jobs, and run their small (mainly livestock) farm businesses in their free time.

This is why I offer what I call “Cost-Saving Farm Business Ideas” for farm business enthusiasts.

As an extension professional, my priority is to provide information, education and advice, to give you a better chance of getting the results you want.

Since I cannot possibly offer hands-on expertise in every area of farm business, I make it a duty to actively explore alliances, and collaborations with farm industry stakeholders wherever possible.

From policy makers and extension professionals, to farm owners and feed manufacturers – I continue to build the relationships.

The idea is to have a network of authentic and competent experts to tap into, on behalf of those I serve.

That way, if/when anyone needs help that I am unable to sufficiently address, I can usually refer him/her to relevant others.

Ultimately, the purpose is to facilitate the establishment and long term profitable operation of as many farm businesses as possible – by playing the role of a catalyst.

Since January 2006, when I launched my Farm Business Best Practice Support Service Website, I’ve made slow but steady progress. And recognition for my work is growing.

My One Page Mind Map on Practical Considerations for Starting a Fish Farm

It is with regard to the above defined purpose that I created (back in 2008) the one page mind map below.

Click here to download and study, the one page mind map for Fish Farmers and Teachers of Fish Farming

It provides bullet-point descriptions of key issues you need to consider UPFRONT in setting up your fish pond, to ensure you get it right as cost-effectively and efficiently as possible.

I believe it can give you a practical idea of what to look out for, and even what to ask your consultant (!), as the project takes off.

Knowing them upfront gives you a better chance of making needed changes/actions to cater for them, so they do not later cause problems that affect the farm negatively.

Remember that effective farm planning is crucial to long-term success of the enterprise.

The Importance of Adopting Best Practices for Continuous Improvement in Your Farm Business

I created this Mind-Map as an educational commercial about an aspect of the Best Operating Process Management System (BOPMS™), which  I can help you setup for your farm business.

In the BOPMS™, major emphasis is placed on the need to streamline operations (via Best Practice Continuous Improvement Initiatives). This will allows easy integration of PC automation to reduce time, effort and resources needed to make the farm business becomes MORE profitable, for the long term.

Click here to watch a Mind Map based video explanation of the components of a BOPMS™.

Final Words: A Practical Tool for Fish Farmers and Teachers of Fish Farming!

It goes without saying different individuals will have different needs.

For instance, you may may have chosen to build concrete ponds – and not earthen ones featured in the mind map.

Indeed, today’s technology even allows use of mobile tanks for high output catfish farming…

Such differences notwithstanding, this mind map still offers potential benefits, as it highlights key aspects you may wish to consider in starting up your fish farming enterprise.

That’s why I believe it will not only prove handy for farm owners, but also be a valuable instrument for use by persons who teach in this area!

In the latter case, all that is required is a little creative thinking, to apply it in teaching situations (For instance, copies can be handed out and then the contents used as a basis for discussion etc).

PS: You Can Get the MS Excel Source File, and Customize for Your Use…

If you would live to make modifications to the mind map, to suit the situation you are in, shoot me an email via tayo at tksola dot com, to find out how you can get a copy of the MS Excel source file I used.

Once You Start Your Farm Business, You Must Think & Act Like An Entrepreneur To Succeed!

“I wanted to be an editor or a journalist, I wasn’t really interested in being an entrepreneur, but I soon found I had to become an entrepreneur in order to keep my magazine going” – Richard Branson.

In this article I explain why anyone starting a farm business needs to realize that s/he must become an entrepreneur in order to succeed. For many people this will require changes in spending habits, use of personal time, friendships kept – and most importantly thinking habits!

My decision to write this article came as a result of observations I made in my interactions with various individuals and groups farm business owners.

Most rarely realized they needed to adopt a different mind set, from that with which they lived their “normal” routine lives prior to starting their farm businesses.

Many people fail to understand that once you start any business venture, you need to adopt what is called an “entrepreneurial mind set”.

Doing so will increase your chances of successfully building that business to achieve sustainable long term profitability.

So what exactly is the entrepreneurial mind set I refer to ?

Maybe I should start with my personal definition of who an entrepreneur is.

“A strong-willed, independent minded person who – despite starting with little or nothing – ultimately achieves social recognition, and financial success, for providing a new – or better – product/service or
way of doing things, that makes a positive difference in people’s lives.”

To paraphrase Fran Tarkenton, a true entrepreneur will often have started with “little more than an idea”, as a small business person.

That’s why it is often said that they create something new out of nothing. In other words, real entrepreneurs take risks that threaten their very survival, but overcome all odds via persistence, to do what most consider impossible.

I will now outline specific behavioural traits and thinking habits, that characterize most successful entrepreneurs.

To
increase your chances of succeeding in your farm business, you will need to develop (and adopt) the traits, (and habits) described below:

1. Become A Self-Development/Best Practice Continuous Improvement Student – Always Wanting to Do Better

True entrepreneurs never stop trying to get better. That’s why they tend to “drive” those that work for(or with) them to do more and get better day in, day out.

In your farm business you will – for instance – want to measure last month’s performance and use that to set targets for the new month – which you will then challenge yourself and/or your team to work hard to achieve.

To get more, you will equip yourself by seeking out those you believe know more or who are doing better, and learning from them. You will also buy books and acquire any other resources/tools that you are convinced will help you improve.

2. Explore Ways To Spend Less MONEY – & Time & Effort – To Make MORE Money(PLUS Rarely
Accept That Anything Is “Impossible”)

It might take time, or a change(s) in your adopted strategy before you can achieve your objective of doing more with less. But quite often, if you apply yourself intelligently and persist, you will achieve the goals you aim for.

For example, in your farm business, an important ingredient or input could suddenly become too expensive for you to use in your daily production without profit margin losses.

Your efforts to adapt by experimenting with potential substitutes could make your workers, associates/partners and fellow farmers call you “unrealistic”.

If you work at it however, you just might achieve a breakthrough that would help not just you,
but the entire industry.

Remember that when everybody does the same thing in the same way, they are often likely to end up with the same results – repeatedly.

In this regard, I mention for instance the glaring failure of farm business owners out here to explore Daphnia culturing and earthworm farming as cheaper, natural and high protein alternative food sources for intensive production of fingerlings and adult catfish.

(I share my experiences in this area in a report I will be writing soon: See title preview here).

3. Learn From Your Mistakes & Avoid Repeating Them

Quite often, a person’s ability to succeed in life depends on how well s/he uses the lessons learnt from past mistakes to guide future actions. In your farm business, paying careful attention to forecasting and proactive farm planning by leveraging the knowledge acquired from your past experiences, is likely to make your business run more smoothly.

So many risks and uncertainties plague the business environment out here. Your ability to speculate more accurately plus anticipate plan to avert potential problems will help keep you in business, when many others are going under.

For instance, you might want to stay alert to sudden government policy changes (e.g. petrol price reviews – which have never been downward!), market prices for your farm inputs/outputs, continuing availability of reliable outlets for your finished products and so on.

Doing so will ensure you stay in a position to quickly take decisions to mitigate what could be potentially negative impact of such unexpected developments.

4. ALWAYS Analyse Your Successes & Failures In Order To Become Better Able To Succeed

When things go right, many people simply rejoice in the moment and fail to take time to investigate why they got it right. That’s why when things go wrong, they often do not know where to look, what to look for and most importantly what to do!

In your farm business, a sound understanding of what works and what does not (and when they work or do not work) will be crucial to your long term success.

By forming the habit of always documenting what you did (or did not do) to get specific results you achieve in your farm business, you will gradually build what is called a “Knowledge Base“(KB).

In future, you will be able to come up with effective problem solving remedies using the KB. It will also guide you in ensuring consistent output is achieved on your farm for longer periods of time.

To make the above possible however, you must entrench a strong record keeping culture amongst your operatives and in your business as a whole. Without this, you ability to analyse your successes and failures would be severely hampered.

5. Stay In Firm Control Of Your Business Spending

You are in business to make money profitably (I hope!). To do that, you have to control your spending, restricting it as much as possible to activities that you consider necessary and inevitable.

More importantly, doing your friends or relatives favors using funds meant for your farm business could set you up for a cash flow crunch when you least expect it.

As much as possible, let the farm business take care of itself – making sure also to leave any extras that accrue to serve as a backup for “rainy day(s)”.

6. Manage Your Friendships/Use Your Personal Time In A Way That Helps Your Farm Business Prosper

You need to plan to spend quality time checking how your farm business is doing in all areas. This could be daily or weekly – I would suggest not at intervals longer than that. You will need to stay in close touch with happenings on the farm so that you can take timely decisions to achieve optimal results.

Friends/relatives who keep you from doing this will rob you of the returns you hope to make from the business. You will need to make them understand that there are certain periods you have set aside for this purpose.

Better still (and if you think it appropriate), you could ask them to join you when you want to do it. That way you still get to do it – and spend time with them.

Just be sure to maintain the required focus so you don’t miss important signs or trends.

What is imperative is that you ensure you do NOT neglect to spend quality time reviewing your farm’s performance and thinking up ways to make it do better.

Final Words: Your Thinking Habits Are MOST Important

The above outlined habits are – in my opinion – some of the most essential for a farm business owner to adopt.

You will observe that most of them relate mainly to how you think.

That’s really what ultimately makes the difference between an entrepreneur, and someone who just runs a business.

Automate Your Farm Record Keeping and Accounts to Succeed Profitably

In this article, I explain the importance of establishing and maintaining reliable farm records keeping/accounting systems as it is a crucial requirement for successful planning & profitable management of your farm business.

A popular saying goes thus: “If you do not record it you cannot measure it. And if you do not measure it, you cannot control it.”

Which is the same thing as saying you cannot plan for it. In essence, I am saying that keeping detailed and accurate farm records and accounts is a crucial requirement for effective and profitable farm planning.

Your Farm NEEDS Diligently Kept Records/Accounts

One thing lacking in most agricultural entreprises out here is detailed and accurate records of activities that take place as operations are carried out.

For peasant farmers who are usually illiterate, it can possibly be considered pardonable if they can’t say what inputs (herbicide types, quantities etc) they used the past year.

But for the growing population of literate farmers, there cannot be any excuse.

Then again literate or otherwise, every farm owner who wishes to enjoy reasonably predictable profits MUST as a matter of priority keep and analyse detailed farm records.

Without detailed and accurate records, farm business planning and management effectively becomes a game of guestimations!

And we all know that unguided assumptions which rarely produce desired results with consistency.

To effectively manage a farm, the farmer needs to have ready access to extensive information concerning past costs and returns, input use, production levels, existing financial situation, including the physical conditions of the farm. S/he also has to know about likely future costs, future returns of production etc. This information can be acquired from farm records and accounts, as well as from all farm sources like research/experimental stations, demonstration plots, universities etc.

In essence, the farmer needs to have records of what has happened before, is happening now and what is likely to happen in future.

What Exactly Can Farmers Do With Farm Records/Accounts?

The following are specific BENEFICIAL uses farmers will readily find for diligently kept farm records and accounts:

1. Farm Planning & Budgetting:

The most realistic way to plan farm production and prepare accompanying budgets is to refer to estimates based on historical data available from past periods of operation. If it’s a new farm, then other sources will be referred to.

2. Farm Performance Evaluation:

Without accurate physical and corresponding accounting records, it will be practically impossible to accurately establish how well a farm entreprise has performed over a defined period.

With accurate physical records and corresponding records, evaluation of the farm performance is easy, simple and a matter of routine, PLUS one is sure of progress of the farm business over a time period.

Specifically, accurate records and accounts show how, within a period of time, labour costs or feed costs for example have either been increasing or decreasing, and how revenue from various entreprises has been increasing or decreasing either because of price changes or changes in physical production.

3. Daily Farm Decision Making:

Farm records and accounts are essential for day to day decision making especially because they show the strong and weak points in management.

A farm entreprise may not be doing well because of a particular factor of production, but such a factor may be difficult to identify/isolate in the abscence of good records and accounts.

For instance in pig farming, it is reported that good farm performance depends on large and frequent litters, economical use of feed, mortality rate, marketing the pigs at the right weight etc.

Without accurate records and accounts therefore, it would be dificult to identify which of these factors is contributing to low profits for instance. The records will show which areas need improving upon.

4. Securing Credit/Loan Support:

There is probably no bank which will not require a farm business to produce adequate physical records with the corresponding accounting records and the overall farm plan, before it can give credit/loan support.

Incidentally, this requirement helps both parties: the bank uses it to know the current state of the farm as well as offers advice. The farmer on the other hand will work to achieve his/her goals in order to fulfill his/her obligation to pay back the extended credit.

Banks need to be convinced that money given out will be used for what is being asked for, and that can only be done by presenting records of what one has already been doing.

5. Taxation & Insurance Purposes:

To avoid over or underpaying taxes, good records and accounts are essential.

Insurance on relevant farm assets can only be done properly if records are available and accurate.

Summary

a. By keeping farm records and accounts, you, the farmer will be equipped to periodically evaluate your overall farm performance using three (3) simple but powerful ratios which I describe in full detail in my customisable on-demand talks on Best Practice Farm Performance Measurement and Improvement (Call +229-66-122-136 or +234-803-302-1263…or email tayo at tksola dot com, for details).

b. You will know where to place emphasis (using the 80:20 Pareto principle), and will be able see dangerous trends earlier and take needed evasive action.

c. Diligently kept farm records and accounts will help you determine where and/or when you are under (or over) estimating your farm costs (or sales/gains).

d. Good farm records and accounts help reliably measure the impact of unexpected market changes on the farm business’ bottom line e.g. policy and price changes announced by government.

In relation to the above last part, the use of custom software automation for records keeping would enable you punch in the new input prices and quickly see how badly it affects your planned/projected production and/or sales margins – as well as other key performance indicators.

Final Words: Do you own – or plan to own – a farm business?

Consider automating your farm records keeping and accounting using custom Excel-VB driven workbook applications (like those that I build for my clients).

You will be able to cost-effectively and efficiently realise all the benefits outlined above in the body of this article.

Feed Formulation Software Will Not Guarantee Livestock Farming Success (Here’s Why…)

“Hi Tayo. I’m Eugene from Malawi and have been following you on and off for quite a while now…”(Full email below).

Eugene emailed me to ask if my Ration Formulator™ could be used for ruminants (e.g Beef/Dairy Cattle, Goats, Sheeps) and Ducks etc. YOU Can Get Potential Buyers to “REPEATEDLY CONTACT YOU” Without Placing Adverts, Using a Web Marketing System - CLICK HERE to ask me how!

Eugene asked if  my Ration Formulator™ could be used for ruminants (e.g Beef/Dairy Cattle, Goats, Sheeps) and Ducks etc. The short answer: YES. But I wrote him this long one…

==Email Starts==

Hi Eugene,

Thanks for your message.

It’s nice to know you’ve found my work of interest/potential use.

To your question…

Since 2004, when I began selling my Feed Formulation Handbook and the Ration Formulator, I’d say over 90% of my buyers, have been owners of Poultry and/or Fish Farms.

My app uses an improved version of the Pearson Square Computation Technique, to do weighted average ration formulation. And it has proven to be quite accurate in the results it turns out for those two groups of animals.

BUT, the farmer MUST ensure s/he gets “accurate” and preferably reasonable updated nutrient analyses done for the key ingredients used in rations fed to animals. Without this, anything you “formulate” would be a potential waste of time.

Now, in the last 2 years an interesting trend has developed in which MORE enquiries have been coming in from owners of Dairy/Beef Cattle Farms, and others that rear commercial Sheep, Goat and other ruminant operations.

For instance, a Canadian farm project manager who bought it wrote back to say he’d found it quite useful for his work. And he has poultry, ducks and other animals like those you mentioned in his stock.

What I’ve learnt over the past 20 years is that when it comes to feed formulation, it’s best to stick with the basics.

Feed formulation AND compounding are VERY practical activities.

One need not complicate them unnecessarily.

Ruminants (which you listed) for instance, happen to be more effective in making use of what they are fed, than other animals, because of their “enhanced digestive systems.

So, one would aim to achieve least cost ration formulation as often and consistently as possible. And the animals would do the rest.

For least cost formulation, you must actively identify and use locally available and cheaper alternatives to complement (or if possible replace) conventional but expensive feed ingredients.

You must also continually look for ways to combine ingredients most cost-effectively, to yield balanced rations at the lowest possible cost.

Apart from the above, the only other thing to pay attention to is the NUTRIENT REQUIREMENT of the target animal in question.

It’s good you mentioned the animals you wish to formulate rations for.

The question is: Do you know the specifics of their nutrient requirements? Especially their protein, minerals and energy needs?

These three are crucial elements for proper ration formulation. There are of course others – like fibre content, calcium etc.

I’d however say that from what I’ve seen with different animals reared, and what I’ve read about different farms, for most smallholder farmers, chasing those other finer parameters can be needless overkill.

And many won’t have the resources to do a proper job of it anyway. What’s more, quite often the difference in animal performance is often not noticeable.

On a final note, I’m currently working on an improved version of my app, which aims to allow elaborate amino acid balancing.

This is to meet the needs, mainly of farmers who rear animals like pigs and rabbits, which demonstrate noticeable performance sensitivity to amino-acids balancing in their rations.

I’m still testing that version to be sure it does what I want.

But since you’ve not mentioned (that) you have pigs on your farm, I can say my existing app will competently handle ration formulation for the animals you mentioned.

All that’s required is that you have a sound understanding of the science of feed formulation.

AND also ensure you obtain the correct/complete data on nutrient requirements for EACH of the animal groups you want to formulate rations for.

I believe it also goes without saying that you must check that what you obtain agrees with the breed/strain of animal you actually have to work with.

You cannot, for instance, simply adopt data from a generic nutrient requirement published for “Dairy Cows” for instance.

Hope this helps…and sorry about the “lecture”…I sometimes get carried away ;-))))

I’m Not Into The Business of Selling At All Cost!

No I’m not.

You see I want people to only buy what will be useful to them. I also try to properly “inform and educate” them, so they can make the best use of what they buy.

I do this based on a 10 item code of ethics that guides me in ALL my dealings. Click here to read it.

If you notice, I did not just zoom in and tell him how well the software would work for the purposes he’d asked about.

No pushy salesmanship in this “space” :-)

I want people to come to a firm conclusion that the solution I offer is actually what they need.

When people are convinced YOU are the one that can help them, they will trust you to help them get the results they want.

And that’s often when it will be a pleasure to do business with them!

Getting a software app for feed formulation is just one part of what it takes to get your animals to perform.

Other considerations – mentioned above – carry just as much weight.

That’s why I make a point of telling those who connect with me that important truth. If they go on to buy the solution I offer – GREAT. If not, I’d have at least added value to them in one or more ways.

And that would be a great feeling!

Final Words: The Power of a Web Marketing System

Let me end by saying this:

I love periodically sharing real life correspondence I have with enquiriers and clients via my website for 2 main reasons:

a. I believe they provide excellent medium for communicating valuable practical information. The above email is a good example.

b. Another reason I share them is to demonstrate the power that using a Web Marketing System like I do, can give you, in terms of your business promotion.

Using a WMS makes pre-qualified sales prospects (i.e people looking for what you offer) come to you, on their own. They will often be already pre-sold on the usefulness of YOUR solution.

Most times you’d simply have to provide payment details and they just go ahead and buy. This happens to me all the time!

Convert Your Excel Reporting Workbooks to Secure (& Even Money Making!) EXE Files

Below is a screenshot of the 2014 upgrade version of my popular Excel-VB driven Ration Formulator sofware. Do you notice it’s actually an EXE (executable) file, and NOT an Excel workbook…even though it’s in Excel?! Users need not enable macros. Plus, it works on any Excel version (for Windows or Mac). All past buyers get it FREE!

Do you notice it’s actually an EXE (executable) file, and NOT an Excel workbook...even though it's in Excel?! Users need not enable macros. Plus, it works on any Excel version (for Windows or Mac). All past buyers get it FREE!

Not many MS Excel experts, talk less users, will know how I converted (actually “compiled” is the word) my Excel-VB driven workbook into an EXE file.

I’ve read on many forums that it’s even impossible. :-))

Some of those who said this are respected, knowledgeable experts in the use of the MS Excel application, for software development.

A few referred to the use of Visual Basic 6 COM tools. But that’s too much hard work…or manual labour.

I own a copy of the Professional Excel Programming manual, and know what using VB6 to create EXE apps involves. Right from the first day I read it, I knew it was not something I’d readily settle for.

So I kept searching. Especially online.

You see, I always knew I would need to be able to convert my automated workbook applications to EXE versions. Mainly to secure my code (knowledgeable developers will tell you VBA password security is a joke. It can be cracked within seconds), and also deploy my apps more professionally.

The only reason I waited was that I wanted to have enough user feedback to incorporate as many valuable features into my software as possible.

Since 2004, I’ve been doing that with my Ration Formulator. Today I have had buyers from across Nigeria, and outside Nigeria/Africa. Some have been so forthcoming with feedback that they have helped improve the app’s functionality greatly!

Last Friday, a prospective buyer of the Ration Formulator who’d called me on phone, sent an email asking:

“Does the software work with a Mac laptop?”

I responded as follows:

“As long as you have a fully functional installation of MS Excel on your PS, my Excel apps will work on it without problems.”

(NB: I sent this response with every sense of responsibility. I’d done my homework by reviewing the features of MS Excel 2011 for Macintosh.)

He promptly sent this response:

“Ok. I’ll let you know when I make payment.”

And he did that the next day.

24 hours later, I sent him the latest (2013) upgrade version of the app.

The next day he sent me a screenshot showing a compile error, that popped up when the app was opening in MS Excel on his laptop.

After thinking about it a while, I recalled that I’d introduced the use of API calls in the 2013 upgrade of the app, to enable use of modeless forms. It was the only change I’d made without considering the MS Excel 2011 for Mac, that I did to the application.

Here’s the reply I sent to him(with the above screenshot image of the new EXE version of the Ration Formulator):

He wrote back to say “thanks”. (And tonight, I’ll be sending him the promised modified version to see if it will run OK.)

Your (or Your Company’s) Important MS Excel Workbooks Can Be Converted to Secure, & Even Income Generating EXE Versions!

I’ve seen various ways companies put spreadsheets to use. From my time in paid employment (over 7 years), as well as the ten years I’ve been a spreadsheet solutions developer for client companies.

Many of those workbooks contain years of hard work from collaborative efforts of highly skilled persons.

They build complex formulas to generate valuable performance indicators for reliable decision making. Most times off-the-shelf apps that can offer similar customized reporting output are impossible to find.

And that’s why it makes great sense for such individuals/businesses to protect them as EXE files!

One example…

Back in 2009, I was contacted by the expatriate regional project manager for a well known petroleum exploration company.

He’d found my Excel-VB Solutions Development website, while “Googling” online for an Excel expert in Nigeria. I was still based in Lagos, Nigeria, at the time.

After a face to face meeting in Ikeja, he eventually invited me to their Freeman house office on Lagos Island, for a meeting with the head of the finance section, and his assistant.

They proceeded to show me a massive, and complex, tax computation workbook application.

It was about 45MB in size!

They wanted me to rebuild for easy comprehension by less Excel-competent users. The person who’d built it had left.

Long story short, I told them what needed to be done, and how I proposed we proceed. The next day they called to inform me they were pleased and wanted me to start work.

But I never did go on to do that project…because we could not agree on when my first payment would happen.

I wanted a one-third advance retainer. They wanted to pay me from the third week after I’d started work.

The point I’m however making is that if they had in-house Excel-VB programming expertise, they would have been better off.

Coupled with the know-how to convert the modified app to EXE version, they could even have made a product that could even be licensed to other companies. Especially considering it was a tax computation workbook!

But then again this is an oil service company we’re talking about. They probably did not need the money!

Having said that, I believe they would still have appreciated the extra security of having such a sensitive workbook in EXE form.

It would be impossible to illegally view the formulas or copy them or the code in it.

But they would still be able to post data, and save changes made to the data, in the EXE version!

If you’re a financial consultant, tax expert, or a professional who builds complex workbooks (E.g. quantity surveyor) for your work, this should interest you.

If you’d like to learn more about how to convert useful MS Excel workbooks you built, into such EXE versions that you can even sell…

Like REAL professional software, complete with installation routines, contact me for details….

I’ll send you details of the amazing features and functions you can get!

You probably already have a specially built workbook you use to quickly compute personal income taxes for client employees.

Or to generate payslips, or to compute company taxes, profit and loss reports etc.

The solution I refer to can help you convert your workbook into an EXE version you can sell to clients, or other consultants, and earn even more money!

Anyone – Including Kids In School – Can Achieve Success Via Part Time Entrepreneuring

Now They’re Selling Their Cakes!

Yep. I found out just yesterday afternoon, when I called to speak with them.

Actually, I called to scold them for leaving their rooms, and most of the house disorganized.

Their mother had complained about that the night before.

So I decided to call and speak with the boys. One is a teenager already, while the other 2 are approaching that age, but the restlessness of youth makes their attention span notoriously short.

I started with the 12 year old, asking him why he’d left the sitting room un swept and disorganized. He mumbled a number of excuses.

None of them held water. But I played along.

Then I told him I would call by 10p.m to ask if he’d done his chores. And if he had not, he and I would have issues. He knew what I meant, and promised he would get it done.

I had a similar chat with the 10 year old.

The 14 year old, this time around, was not at fault. He has had to support his mother a lot since I began traveling, and the many different roles he’s playing have made him mature beyond his years.

He’s become extremely capable in terms of handling house hold chores, including cooking.

The teenage excesses still come over him at times, but he’s learning to better manage them.

I told him to follow up with his younger brothers and make sure they did what they’d promised to do.

Just as I was about to end the call, the 10 year old (he’s always the one who leads these initiatives) snatched the mobile from his older brother, and exclaimed: “Tayo, we’re now selling our cakes!”

It was like a repeat of how they told me they had started selling their drinks.

I asked: “Really? Where?”

“In our school. Our classmates bought all the ones we took to school yesterday!” he replied.

“How much do you sell them?” I asked.

“N50!” he replied in an excited voice “They bought everything, and told us to bring more.”

Photo 2: The 14 year old has a finger in his mouth. That’s where most of the first set  of cakes they made went…before they recently began selling them…lol!)

As Shown Below I Also Brought Them the Cake Cups I Used In Cotonou

The price he mentioned was one we’d agreed on before I returned to Cotonou. That day we sat down and did simple costing of the inputs, to agree a reasonable selling price for each cup cake.

Our computation came to roughly N55.

Heavy metal pot my kids use for "non-oven" baking of the pineapple peel cakes. I Also Brought Them the Cake Cups I Used In Cotonou

In Cotonou, I’d seen many people, towards the Christmas celebrations selling similar cake sizes for 150 FCFA.

This amounted to approximately N50.

So we agreed they should try selling the cakes at that price.

I Had No Idea If They Would Find Buyers or How/Where!

I just told them: Try and sell them(just as I did after teaching them to make the drinks)…LOL

For one thing I noticed the first set of cakes they made using my “zero-oven-village-charcoal-stove-baking” method tended to be a bit undercooked.

(That did not however stop them and their sisters from gobbling everything up. They really had fun making cakes with over 3kg of flour I brought with me, plus another 2 kg I bought before I left. All the cakes were eaten up. No attempt was made to sell. Kids!!!! LOL)

I later found the cakes undercooked because they were not keeping the charcoal bricks burning. As a result the heat tended to diminish with time.

So I told them to let each cakes batch stay longer, and to fan the embers for longer periods.

As You Can Imagine, An Oven Would Have Made All This Hassle Unnecessary…

That’s true.

However, the improvisational approach I used helps people – especially kids – discover how to use their creativity to do things inexpensively.

And it also equips them with valuable life skills.

The way I see it, as young Africans, it’s useful for them to know how our traditional cooking “equipment” work.

Who knows where they’ll find themselves in future!

Anyway, considering that they now make sales, and buyers want more, it’s safe to say they’ve now gotten the “Cooking Time” for their cakes right 😉

Next Step: Getting Them to Understand Why They Must Re-Invest – & Save – Money They Make

I told the 10 year old I was pleased with what they had done, and to “Keep it up!”

But he was not done yet…

He quickly cut in to say: “Tayo, tell Mommy to give us N300, so we can buy more flour and sugar, to make more cakes.”

That request reminded me of a mistake they had been making since they began recording sales.

They’d showed me wooden piggy banks they put their money in. But it rarely stayed there. They always found ways to spend it all!

In fact, the last time I spoke with their mother, she complained they got money from her to buy sugar, flour and other ingredients for making the cakes and drinks.

But they never brought home the money from sales. Instead they spent it on snacks right in school!

Since they are kids, this was not surprising, and I expected it.

I told him to give the phone to his mother. Then I told her to give them the money, BUT to demand that they hand over sales they make to her.

The next step I have planned is to sit them down, and explain why they must plough back part of their sales income to purchase materials for the next production.

And I’ll also tell them why they have to save some of what is left.

Final Words: One Thing I Know From Coaching Kids Over The Years…

If you explain it clearly to them, so they see the benefits, you will NOT need to chase them to do it.

For now, I’m letting them enjoy the feeling of being able to make the classmates part with N50 for each of the cakes they make by themselves.

I know it’s a wonderful feeling, and it will inspire them to think of more ways to put their skills to use.

I urge you to do the same for your kids.

Entrepreneurial skills of this kind can prove crucial for their achievement of success in their adult lives.

Children find activities of this kind exciting/challenging, so interest is unlikely to be lacking.

And as shown above, they can do it, while still schooling full time!
