But why does succeeding have to be so messy? [Case Study 1: Richard Branson]<\/strong><\/h3>\n

It\u2019s because succeeding is a learning process.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not a one-off thing. You don\u2019t just decide to \u2013 and become \u2013 successful at anything: at least NOT when you want exceptional, ABOVE <\/em>AVERAGE, non-corner cutting success.<\/p>\n

Sadly, many people fail to LOOK beyond the outer appearance of successful people they admire. As a result, they miss valuable opportunities to discover the CIRCUMSTANCES under which they succeeded.<\/p>\n

For instance, we see Richard Branson, and LOVE the wonderful brands he represents: <\/strong>But many of us have not bothered to find out what his journey to success was like.<\/h3>\n

How many of us know that being Dyslexic, he found it difficult to succeed in conventional schooling, and eventually dropped out when he could not take it anymore?<\/p>\n

That happened when he was just 15 years of age. He NEVER went back to school after that.<\/p>\n

Instead, what he did was to start a micro business, buying and selling things\u2026 <\/strong><\/p>\n

However, that journey was also NOT a straight line. Many failures were recorded. Each time he fell, he dusted himself off, and went right back \u2013 in what must have been a messy process.<\/p>\n

Yet he kept at it.<\/p>\n

Today, he is a billionaire business owner \u2013 and boss to MANY who did well in conventional school!<\/em><\/p>\n

But few of us KNOW what it really feels like to fail in the many ways Richard Branson has all these years. Even fewer understand what failing repeatedly has TAUGHT <\/strong>him about succeeding!<\/h3>\n

By reading up on, and studying Mr. Branson (and other successful people), I have learned a lot about what it takes to succeed.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s one FACT: <\/em><\/strong>Those messy encounters and experiences he had, combined to make him the seemingly unstoppable success<\/em> machine we know him to be today!<\/em><\/p>\n

In other words, what I discovered to be common to virtually all successful people is that there was a time when they got MORE wrong, than they got right.<\/p>\n

During that period, there was little to be admired about their efforts. But they knew enough to keep going, learning from the messy failures they had, and using what they learned to try again more intelligently \u2013 till success came.<\/p>\n

The process of succeeding is necessarily messy [Case Study 2: Analogy using two popular action movie heroes]<\/strong><\/h3>\n

If Arnold Schwarzenegger as Terminator, or Sylvester Stallone as Rambo, did not get bruised and battered, in beating bad guys, their movies would not be so interesting \u2013 would they?<\/p>\n

Think about it. Why do people connect so deeply with those characters? <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s not that they NEVER face adversity or fall\/get wounded\u2026NO!<\/p>\n

Instead, it\u2019s because they defy adversity in whatever form it comes to them\u2026and go on to achieve their goals e.g. saving lives etc.<\/p>\n

Human beings love people who can turn bad circumstances around for the better.<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n

When the bad guys tried to take down Rambo, he came back with a vengeance.<\/p>\n

Sometimes, it \u201clooks\u201d like the bad guys have actually succeeded in \u201ckilling\u201d the hero.<\/p>\n

But the hero, with his\/her never-say-die attitude (what Burt Dubin calls \u201cBulldog blood\u201d) digs deep and draws inspiration from his\/her REASON for doing what s\/he does.<\/p>\n

Eventually, that helps him\/her find the needed extra reserve of physical and\/or mental energy to get right back up, and take the fight to the bad guys again\u2026until s\/he wins.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s leave the movies, and come back to YOU...<\/strong><\/h3>\n

As an expert in your field, if you want to excel at what you do, YOU need to choose challenging GOALS and go after them, no matter what, until you succeed.<\/em><\/p>\n

Sadly, many people today do NOT want to get \u201cdirty\u201d, talk less of emerging at any point in the course of trying to achieve their goals, looking \u201cbruised\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Unfortunately, life\u2019s reward systems designed by the Creator, do NOT work like that. You must be willing to VENTURE!<\/p>\n

For instance, if you want to make more money, by selling more of your products or services, you need to develop your skills in Marketing & Sales.<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Among other things you will need to LEARN how to go out and TALK to the RIGHT people, and to DEAL with rejection by NOT taking it personally.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In other words, you must develop the ability to BOLDY promote solutions you offer to those you IDENTIFY to need it, in a way that makes them gladly decide to buy.<\/p>\n

When they say NO (and some will), that will be rejection.<\/p>\n

The truth is rejection WILL happen often, and in sometimes embarrassing ways. <\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n

That\u2019s why many people dread having to \u201csell\u201d. It\u2019s also why many competent experts struggle to find buyers for the products and services they offer.<\/p>\n

But get this: If you go out to \u201csell\u201d and end up meeting a LOT of people who say NO (some being nasty in doing it), that\u2019s equivalent to an action movie hero emerging \u201cbruised and bloodied\u201d from an encounter with the \u201cbad guys\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n

However, whether you go on to succeed like a true hero, will depend on how much you let the \u201cmessy\u201d state of affairs you find yourself in AFFECT you, as you pursue your success!<\/em><\/p>\n

If you dwell on what others say\u2026especially if\/when they mock you, and let it demoralize you, chances are good that you WILL end up quitting.<\/p>\n

Now, if that happens it will not be anything new. Most people are experts at quitting or giving up. You would NOT be the first or the last.<\/p>\n

But imagine if Arnold Schwarzenegger\u2019s \u201cTerminator\u201d was selling stuff, what would he say to rejection?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

I'm willing to bet it would be: \u201cI\u2019ll be back!<\/strong>\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

That attitude is what makes a person achieve exceptional success others LOVE to talk about!<\/em><\/p>\n

Have you noticed that the story of a person who kept going till s\/he achieved success, despite facing massive odds, is one that people find interesting?<\/p>\n

The story of the person who quit rarely excites anyone \u2013 for obvious reasons!<\/em><\/p>\n

This is why some of the greatest stories in the world are those about people who succeeded in spite of exposure to great suffering and prolonged adversity e.g. South Africa\u2019s Nelson Mandela, Nigeria\u2019s Fela Anikulapo Kuti, and America\u2019s Abraham Lincoln.<\/p>\n

The above is why anytime I face rejection. I never let it get me down, or make me scared to try again. Instead I simply silently say: \u201cI\u2019ll be back!<\/em><\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

The success I enjoy today is proof that this works.<\/p>\n

While being messy, the journey to authentic success can also get lonely [Case Study 3: Glenn Cunningham]<\/strong><\/h3>\n

So, if you want success, don't expect others to be with you all the way. You may have to go it alone at some point - and that's when it can get even messier!<\/p>\n

The amazing story of an 8 year old boy who, despite getting badly burned in a fire (leading Doctors to tell his mother he would NEVER walk again)\u2026went on to become the first human being to run the mile under 4 minutes!<\/em><\/p>\n

That story graphically illustrates what I mean by saying \u201cThe Process of Succeeding is Messy!\u201d<\/p>\n

Glenn Cunningham for weeks and months, in a lonely environment, with no crowds to cheer him on, dragged himself, on the ground in the fields, with his limbs hanging useless behind him, until he managed to begin walking.<\/p>\n

Imagine what Glenn Cunningham must have looked like every time he did that? Dirty, soiled clothes and body? Imagine how many stares of pity he must have had to ignore, to keep doing it again, and again and again.<\/p>\n

Remember: he was doing it when no one believed it could help him. <\/strong><\/p>\n

So, it was not like he announced it on Facebook, and everybody clicked LIKE, giving him some moral support.<\/p>\n

He was ALL alone. Only when he eventually succeeded, and went on to WIN, did he get the applause. By then however, he had so mastered the whole process that he made it look EASY, and he certainly did NOT look pitiful!<\/p>\n

Final Words: If you don\u2019t want to get dirty, don\u2019t expect to reap lasting success!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

I decided to write this piece because today I see too many people who want to succeed, without getting \u201cdirty\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n

I mean that literally and figuratively\u2026<\/p>\n

If you want to ALWAYS look \u201cin control\u201d, or \u201ccool, calm and collected\u201d, you are very unlikely to achieve exceptional success.<\/p>\n

Learning precedes competence. To achieve success, you must be prepared to experience failure<\/span><\/strong> (i.e. you will make mistakes, fall, and get dirty), and use that<\/span><\/strong> to improve, till you succeed.<\/p>\n

So, don\u2019t fool yourself \u2013 and do NOT let anyone fool you\u2026<\/strong><\/h3>\n

You simply cannot get a FREE ride in a fancy car, on the way to<\/a> <\/em>authentic, non-corner cutting, exceptional success: if you want success, be prepared to get dirty!<\/p>\n
