It was made by an organisation covering \"smallholder agriculture\" across Africa, Carribean, and Pacific regions of the world.<\/p>\n

In the email, my friend proposed that we jointly submit a proposal (as co-authors) for a research paper on \u201cFeed Formulation\u201d, in response to the call.<\/p>\n

I recently got another email from my \"Professor of Agriculture\" friend.<\/p>\n

This one contained details of a \u201cCall for submission of brief papers, case studies and synthesis papers<\/strong>\u201d. A quick online search led me to the website where the call originated. It was made by an organisation covering \"smallholder agriculture\" across Africa, Carribean, and Pacific regions of the world.<\/p>\n

In the email, my friend proposed that we jointly submit a proposal (as co-authors) for a research paper on \u201cFeed Formulation\u201d, in response to the call.<\/p>\n

The organisers aim to publish documented experiences and success stories, to encourage \u201crejuvenation of smallholder agriculture\u201d. <\/em><\/p>\n

They called for papers in either English or French, on 3 broad categories of issues.<\/p>\n

One of the issues (which I chose) was \u201cExtent of ICT adoption by farmers\u201d. <\/strong><\/p>\n

This had to do with analyzing the rate and extent of adoption of PC based (not mobile phones) software applications, for specific agriculture-related purposes.<\/p>\n

You May Wonder Why My Friend Chose \u201cFeed Formulation\u201d\u2026and Why He Proposed Co-Authoring With Me (?)<\/h3>\n

After all, I\u2019m not an academic. Compared to him, all I have is a B.Sc degree<\/a> in Agricultural Extension Services.<\/p>\n

He, on the other hand, is a Professor of Agricultural Extension - and Director of his university\u2019s school of Agricultural Sciences in South Africa!<\/em><\/p>\n

So, why did he choose that<\/span><\/em> topic\u2026and why did he choose me<\/span><\/em>? <\/strong><\/p>\n

NB:<\/em><\/strong> I sent him a draft proposal, which \u2013 post updates \u2013 he submitted to the organisers. \u00a0He\u2019s since forwarded their acknowledgement of receipt, to me. If all goes well, and they accept the proposal, we\u2019ll do the field work, and send the final paper in.<\/em><\/p>\n

And the PAY Is Not Bad \ud83d\ude42<\/h3>\n

Research write-ups on agriculture, as I've said in past articles<\/a>, can attract pretty remuneration. Below is a screenshot of fees authors of accepted papers will be paid:<\/p>\n

What follows below is based on excerpts from a section of the proposal I wrote.<\/h3>\n

Authors were required to explain \"why they were the right persons to write the proposed paper<\/em><\/strong>\".<\/p>\n

The details below are some of those I gave. And I believe they are what made my friend choose me.<\/em><\/p>\n

Since 2003, I Have Maintained a Growing Library of Cost-Saving Farm Business Ideas articles<\/a> - and Information Products<\/a>.<\/h4>\n

Many visitors to my website, discover it<\/strong> (i.e. the website) via my articles, which turn up on their search engine results pages.<\/p>\n

My popular Feed Formulation Handbook<\/a> is promoted via such articles (and videos), on the website and via other online channels. <\/em><\/p>\n

\"A<\/a><\/p>\n

All of the above brings me in frequent contact with farm business owners, feed manufacturers, policy makers and farm support experts, in and out of Africa. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Today, some are past buyers<\/a> of my farm support products\/services. A growing number are subscribers to my weekly newsletter<\/a> and blog<\/a> - while some follow me on Twitter<\/a> and Facebook<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Following requests by an increasing number of my handbook\u2019 buyers, I used my Excel-Visual Basic programming skills to develop a Ration Formulator software<\/a>. <\/strong><\/p>\n

It enables persons who understand the principles and practice of feed formulation, to quickly formulate balanced rations for livestock, automatically \u2013 using the PC.<\/p>\n

I also offer a service to help farmers establish best practice systems<\/a>, to make their farms run more predictably, and profitably.<\/h3>\n

It\u2019s called development of a Best Operating Process Management System(BOPMS<\/a>)\u2122.<\/p>\n

A key component of a BOPMS\u2122, is the use of customisable software<\/a>, for tracking, and analysis of Farm Operations\u2019 Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)<\/a> e.g. Hen Day Production percentages.<\/p>\n

During the last 30 days, I developed a Poultry Layer Farm Management software<\/a> for a client\u2019s farm - in South West Nigeria - and trained his two farm managers to use it.<\/p>\n

My Professor friend is familiar with aspects of my above mentioned work. And I believe that\u2019s what convinced him I could author this paper.<\/h4>\n

That<\/strong>\u2026AND<\/span><\/em><\/strong> the fact that he knows I have formal training, as an Extension Services professional.<\/p>\n

You see, we both graduated<\/a> from the SAME<\/strong> Agricultural Extension Services department, of the SAME<\/strong> university, in the SAME<\/strong> year (1992). I emerged top of the class, and he was second best graduating student. <\/strong><\/p>\n

[NB: <\/strong>Don't ask me why I didn't stay in formal academic circles like he did. That's a story for another article \ud83d\ude42 <\/em>]<\/p>\n

My Experiences Tell Me Farm Business Owners, Need to<\/em> Do Public Speaking<\/a> to Influence Farm-Related Research!<\/h3>\n

\"The<\/a><\/p>\n

In the process of working wi<\/a>th farmers<\/a> (as a mulitpreneurial Farm Research & Extension Advisory Services provider<\/a> with a bias for Best Practice Solutions Development<\/strong>), I\u2019ve gained deep insights<\/a> into their unique needs and challenges.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why I believe they need to educate those who \"serve them\", about the unique experiences they have, and challenges they encounter.<\/p>\n

We outsiders are unlikely to see as much as the farmers see, on THEIR farms - in their day to day operations. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Our short visits to interview them for research, and other purposes, are unlikely to reveal enough insights, to develop the best possible solutions - for their real world!<\/p>\n

It if for this reason, that I propose farm business owners be formally invited to present, brief experience-sharing papers<\/strong>, at agricultural development fora - and related events.<\/em><\/p>\n

Specifically, Farm Business Owners Should be Encouraged (Even Challenged):<\/strong><\/h3>\n

1. To learn to compile data and information <\/strong>on their farm based experiences, and deliver lectures on lessons learned<\/a> to the academia, policy makers etc.<\/p>\n

NB: <\/strong>Farmers who use Excel-based recording of farm operations data, including chart based trending of KPIs<\/a> will have no problems collating such data, for discussion in their talks.<\/em><\/p>\n

2. To learn to THINK up<\/a>, and SPEAK on<\/a>,<\/strong> specific areas they want research done, to help them - more frequently.<\/p>\n

The above will create opportunities for collaboration, between policy makers, the academia, farm support experts, and farm business practitioners. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

This is likely to result in more useful research publications\/solutions, that farm business owners can put to immediate, practical, and profitable use, with minimal help!<\/p>\n
