You Are an Expert\u00a0 <span class=\"style42\">- But You Will Not Always Have the Answers<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"style3\">It\u2019s in all of us. Along with the self-assurance and confidence that comes from knowing you\u2019re competent, there comes a potential tendency to forget we don't really know it all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\"><strong>Or let me put it this way: you can forget that you MAY not always know what will, or will not work, in your field of expertise. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\">As experts-who-speak, that can happen often if we\u2019re not cautious.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\"><em>What we know to be true today, may get overtaken by a newer discovery tomorrow. <\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\"><strong>So, you'll probably want to avoid telling anyone something's \"impossible\" now, because YOU can't see it with YOUR experience based expert insight. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\">Why? Because someone else just might!<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style31\"><strong>2. <span class=\"style42\">One Real Life Example of How Expert Mindsets Can Be Bad For Everyone<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"style3\">There was a time when everyone saw nothing wrong with feeding babies, with man made baby foods, without breastfeeding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\">Decades afterwards, came the wonderful discovery (known to village dwellers for centuries!), about the advantages of feeding babies breast milk from nursing mothers. \u00a0It provides nutritional and health benefits that are hard to duplicate. So everyone <strong>switched back<\/strong> to breast feeding!<\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\">But certain medical \u201cexperts\u201d led us down the earlier path, and kept us going that way for decades. What were they thinking then? And what were <strong>WE<\/strong> thinking by listening to them for so long?<\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\"><strong><em>How come no one thought to challenge their ideas and recommendations much earlier ?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\">The answer is that we all regarded them as <strong>experts<\/strong>. And societal conditioning makes us believe they know better than the rest of us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\"><em>They also knew that \u2013 which was probably why they relaxed, and never thought to <strong>challenge themselves either \u2013 through all those decades!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\">Do you now see how this \"expert mindset\" has a tendency to put everyone in trouble? Aha!<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style31\"><strong>3. <span class=\"style42\">Authentic Experts Must Be Willing to Be Objective <\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"style3\">As an expert-who-speaks, it is highly conceivable that you may find yourself taken up by an audience member, who during the \u201cQ and A\u201d session, challenges a line of thinking, or opinion you voiced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\"><strong>Avoid getting defensive or taking it personal. <\/strong>Remember that s\/he may <strong>not <\/strong>have your level of expert insight. Ironically, <strong><em>that<\/em><\/strong> may sometimes actually be an advantage \u2013 for him\/her!<\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\">For instance, \u00a0a new person who joins an establishment, often bring \u201cfresh eyes\u201d to bear \u2013 and is likely to be less sentimentally attached to the existing state of affairs.\u00a0 As a result, she would more readily identify aspects needing improvement that others have become blind to .<\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\"><em>The above perspective could be one applicable to the question-asking audience member I mentioned earlier. S\/he could be asking with the \"fresh eyes\/mind\" of one who has not become too familiar with the subject. <\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\"><strong>Sometimes an expert voices an opinion, and people accept it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\">Then when a contrary or competing school of thought comes up, the expert may feel defensive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\">The smart thing would however be to maintain an objective mindset. Carefully assess the new line of thinking for its merits, and then offer an informed view based on that assessment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\">This will put you back in the driver\u2019s seat as an <strong>authority<\/strong> on your subject, because you would then be endorsing that new perspective using your expert insight!<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style31\"><strong>4. <span class=\"style42\">Problems Arise When Experts Refuse to Acknowledge They Don\u2019t Know Everything<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"style3\">It\u2019s great to think of yourself as an expert, and to go about your work with that mental attitude.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\"><em>However, never let it intoxicate you into believing you alone will always have the last say about issues relating to your field of expertise. <\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\"><strong>That would be a costly mistake \u2013 and you risk making yourself looking bad in the long run.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\">How? Well, if \u2013 and this has happened a\u00a0 lot in history \u2013 the other person is eventually proved right, all your narrow minded arguments could make you look LESS than the expert you wanted to be seen as!<\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\"><strong>If you still don\u2019t get it, let me elaborate further: <\/strong>a REAL expert can also demonstrate her expertise by being one of those <strong>who first recognises <\/strong> the next big idea, and endorses or recommend sit to others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\">And that includes ideas that eclipse her own. <strong>You need not always be the originator of the next big thing, to be relevant<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\"><em>(<strong>NB:<\/strong> It goes without saying that you should stand your ground, if you are <strong>honestly <\/strong>convinced the other argument or idea \u00a0does not hold water. Say it as you see it. You do NOT need phony humility!)<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style31\"><strong>5. <\/strong><span class=\"style42\">Resist The Urge to Adopt the Expert State of Mind<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote class=\"style3\"><p>\u201c<strong><em>The moment one gets into the expert state of mind, a great number of things become impossible<\/em><\/strong>\u201d - Henry Ford<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"style3\">Henry Ford reportedly distrusted experts, believing they were too familiar with the reasons that something could not be done.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\"><strong>For was (and is) NOT the only one who feels this way about experts... <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\">For instance, James Cook (Millionaire Entrepreneur, and best selling author of \"The Start-up Entrepreneur\u201d) warned aspiring entrepreneurs, that people (e.g. experts) who offer advice will often give it based on how <strong>your<\/strong> (i.e. the entrepreneur's) idea affects them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\"><em>In other words, they will give you answers that depend on whether they think your idea has negative or positive implications for them.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\"><strong>This a basic self-preservation tendency based on a natural instinct that all human beings have. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\"><em>As an expert-who-speaks, DO NOT to let that instinct control you.
