I remember when my 9th grade teacher asked me:<\/p>\n

'Lisa what do you want to be when you grow up?'
\nYou see I had to fight the Harlem Crip 30's every day to get home from school, so I looked at her and said \"Alive.\"<\/p>\n

I took an English class, and I got a FAIL in English.<\/p>\n

And my English teacher said, in front of the entire class:<\/p>\n

'Lisa, you have to be the weakest writer I have ever met in my entire life.'<\/p>\n

Don't worry, my story ends good.<\/p>\n

Don't feel sorry for me.<\/p>\n

I got seven under my belt.<\/p>\n

And then the same year, my speech teacher said - after giving me a \"D minus'<\/p>\n

I knew I had an A in speech, like, come on...<\/p>\n

He obviously didn't agree with me. He gave me a D minus and said:<\/p>\n

'Ms. Nichols, I recommend that you never speak in public. That you get a desk job.<\/p>\n

So here's the beauty of that story:<\/p>\n

Other people's perception of you, ain't none of your business.<\/p>\n

Everything you've ever been through, set through, rose through, cried through, prayed through...everything is a setup for your next best season.<\/p>\n

In the way you forgive the perceivably unforgivable; the way you love the perceivably unlovable; the way you accept what seems to be unacceptable; the way you embrace after you've been betrayed; the way you do that, is the way you will lead us.<\/p>\n

Your light belongs to everyone who'll be illuminated because you were bold enough and obedient enough to let your light shine.<\/p>\n

Yes, Yes. Yes, Yes.<\/p>\n

And every time you cross someone's path and they can't handle your light...<\/p>\n

You know those people. They try to give you reasons why you should tone it down a bit...<\/p>\n

That they will tell Sheryl not to sing so loud.<\/p>\n

Right, right, right.<\/p>\n

They would tell me to shut up in class.<\/p>\n

They tell you, 'You kind of strange'<\/p>\n

You know those people.<\/p>\n

Dream snatchers. Vision busters.<\/p>\n

Don't be mad at them. They can only love you to the capacity to which they are able to love themselves.<\/p>\n

Don't be mad at them.<\/p>\n

Don't be mad at them.<\/p>\n

Pray for them. Love them.<\/p>\n

Because they\u2019re dealing with themselves, like we're dealing with us.<\/p>\n

But, I want you to remember that your 70 watts...your 70 watts had to be turned way up.<\/p>\n

Because you got way more to give us.<\/p>\n

It ain't over yet.<\/p>\n

Don't put a period, where God put a comma.<\/p>\n

And when you turn it up to 159 watts, you know you keep turning it up.<\/p>\n

You like you stop dimming your light. You say 'Today is the first day of the rest of my life' and you turn it up...<\/p>\n

You're going to find people that can't handle your light.<\/p>\n

And before today you might have dimmed your life. You might have shrunk a little bit.<\/p>\n

You might have tempered it down a little bit.<\/p>\n

But after today, I want you to see this.<\/p>\n

After today, turn the lights up.<\/p>\n

After today you don't dare dim your light.<\/p>\n

As your light gets brighter...As your light gets brighter...you're going to disrupt some people, and they're going to tell you:<\/p>\n

'Your light's too bright.'<\/p>\n

'Your light's too bright.'<\/p>\n

'Your light's too bright.'<\/p>\n

Then you just look at them and say:<\/p>\n

'Well I'm not dimming my light.'<\/p>\n

'I'm just going to hand you some (sun) shades.'<\/p>\n

I'm just saying...<\/p>\n

Why don't you start carrying around an extra pair of shades!<\/p>\n
