Tayo Solagbade's Excel-VB Elections Results Compiler & Reports/Charts Generator

Page updated: 7th May 2015

On this page I share examples of summary reports and charts auto generated by this new Excel-VB driven app, which I built mainly to demonstrate how Excel can be used to boost productivity in everyday activities.

[I began building the app around 25th April 2015. Today, 7th May 2015, I'm putting up the 2 part demonstration video, below, of the fully functional app, ready for use]

The idea here is to show the potentially limitless ways you can use Excel to boost your routine data recording, analysis and report generation in ANY field you work.

Most people think Excel is only useful for financial reporting.

NOT TRUE!

In reality ANY activity in which data handling/manipulation for trending and decision making happens CAN be improved with use of MS Excel ...especially when smart functions and intelligent VBA coding is employed by competent persons.

Imagine your organization being able to click each state (or LGA, Zone, even country) on ANY map to generate instant tables and charts of products sales totals, marketing expenses and other data across your sites nationwide, for a day, week, month, year etc?

That's what I'm trying to show with this app!

It's really evolved since then as you will see below.

Screenshot 2 (Above): The multi-clickable map of Nigeria, that I use to auto-generate reports for ANY state I click on the map.- another example of how I use Custom Graphic User Interfaces (GUIs) to help users find their way around quickly. The intuitive GUIs that I creatively incorporate is why I call my Excel-VB apps "Excel Novice Proof!". It's also why I use the tagline: "If you can use a mobile (or smart) phone, you can use my custom Excel-VB apps".

Screenshot 5 (Above): This interface shows a floating form that enables a user click a drop menu to generate instant charts and table summaries of valid votes recorded for a party s/he chooses across ALL the states of the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory. And it also adds the totals right at the bottom - with color formatting. NB: As I explain in the video demonstration, clicking the SAVE button on the top right of the forms (if the code is enabled) will cause the displayed table/chart summary to be saved as a FILE (image) to any location you specify on your computer. That way you would then be able to use the image outside of the app, in for example, a report or article you write, or even send it as an email to someone you think will find it useful.

Screenshot 7 (Above): In the video demo, I noted that INEC PDF summary of results had some errors in the totals column for about 5 states. Nothing serious though. However, for me, those errors confirmed that smarter use of data handling tools needs to be employed by INEC. Indeed, their summary PDF seems to be a scanned image of the paper version. As you will see from my video, smart worksheet design makes it possible to fit an even WIDER table than INEC's in Landscape orientation, on an A4 sized print page.

What's more, INEC's website offers no analysis, trending of any sort, such as the one displayed in the one page ready-to-print report auto-generated by this app. Zonal summaries of the election results offer certain very interesting insights into what really happened during that historic event.

Rather than leave people to speculate based on haphazard computations (mostly done by hand), smart use of nifty functions in MS Excel, combined with intelligent worksheet design and efficient VBA automation can dramatically boost one's ability to made useful discoveries from what otherwise appears to be ordinary looking data!

Screenshot 8 (Above): In all my apps, I insert smart clickable buttons that enable quick navigation and other tasks with a single or few clicks. Clicking a "Print" or "Print Preview" button in my apps instantly creates a ready-to-print version of the page or report being viewed by the user - and it leaves in in PREVIEW mode for the user to decide if s/he wishes to simply VIEW or send to printer. An example is seen above.
